We ate breakfast here on 7/1/26. It was great, the staff courteous, and very affordable. I got the "Special" which was 2eggs, toast and potatoes for $7.95. If you imagine a hotdog, typically a good size for an adult. So, I ordered a hotdog and got a child size hotdog. Definitely not what I expected and definitely not worth it. The price $4.55 plus tax. It's nothing special, but The Cafe gets the job done...breakfast or lunch quickly. The muffins are pretty large, if you're okay with the carbs. The homefries aren't bad. The BLT and the pastrami are decent. It's Korean owned, so they have bibimbap and bulgolgi, which aren't amazing but it's good if you want a change. The chicken noodle soup, while full of vegetable and chicken, is over-seasoned. Service is fine and prompt, without being unfriendly. It smells like a greasy spoon, so I just do takeout. read more

Not very impressed. First, I ordered an omelet 1 whole egg/2 egg whites with peppers, onions and wheat toast. That came to $8 dollars! The woman behind the counter didn't understand the 1 egg 2 egg white ratio and had me explain it 3 times...I still don't think she understand what I asked for because I ended up with an omelet made of all egg whites. I've worked around the corner for years and sadly this place is going downhill in a hurry. I don't know if management changed or what, but my last three visits in the past few months for a simple omelette or sandwich has taken way, way, way too long. I'd chalk it up to a morning rush crowd or lunch push but I go at varying times. It's so slow here and the food is average at best. Seriously guys? Guys, seriously?? HOW does this place only have TWO reviews? WHERE ALL MY LEGAL YELPERS AT??? The Cafe (whose full name is The Cafe on New Chardon) is the very definition of the term 'hidden gem.' Located directly across the street from Boston Municipal, it is patronized almost exclusively by lawyers and paralegals, their clients, and court staff, hungry after a morning on trial or looking for a quick bite between hearings. And frankly I am shocked and appalled that apparently none of them are Yelpers, else there would be MUCH more love here for The Cafe. I spend a lot of time at the court (as a paralegal....not as a criminal....just wanted to clarify) and as such I spend a lot of time here. It's perfect for when you have fifteen minutes to stuff something into your face and run back to trial still chewing as the jury is returning. Located in an underground lair (not really, but you walk down some stairs into a below-sidewalk-level dining area) the cafe has a wonderful cozy, hidden away feel that is especially awesome when seeking food and shelter on an icy rainy day. Not a whole lot of seating, and what seating there IS is usually taken up by afore-mentioned lawyers, but there are a few tables out on the sidewalk as well, which is nice when the sun is out. They serve breakfast, delicious New England coffee (hot and iced), and have every sandwich under the sun. A few of the standouts: Chicken pesto wrap. Warm, perfectly grilled chicken tossed with pesto, lettuce, and tomato, all inside a wrap the size of my HEAD, for about 7 bucks and some change. Sounds pricey for what it is, but it is WELL worth it. Falafel pita. Oh man....I think my stomach just got turned on. I adore falafel and would gladly eat myself to death with them, and this is hands-down one of the best falafel wraps I've ever had. The falafels are ENORMOUS, nice and crispy on the outside, light and fluffy without being dry on the inside. Tossed with lettuce, tomato, hummus, and pickles, all inside a pita wrap. When I say this thing is GINORMOUS, I mean it. This is not a wrap for the faint of heart. It's so big, you don't even eat it so much as just smoosh it against your face and bite down. Seriously, I had falafel and hummus on my cheeks when I finished. On my CHEEKS. #iregretnothing There are always specials, every one of which always sounds delicious. Everything is fresh, quickly prepared, and served to you by friendly staff. It DOES run a bit pricey, but I get why, being the only place for lunch in convenient walking distance from the BMC. And the food is so good I honestly don't mind paying a little more for it. I admit that I havn't been here for breakfast yet, but if the quality, taste, and general awesomeness is anything like their lunch offerings, I'm sure it's just spectacular. Come here for lunch, you won't regret it! p.s. alas, I must knock off one star for being cash only, and it hurts me to do that more than it hurts you, The Cafe. Food is always cooked to order and the owners are super good to their customers! There food is well priced (fairly cheap) for fresh food and they have so many options from breakfast to lunch and even some dinner plates. The prices are perfect for a simple lunch during the work week. Ive been there twice so far and had a chicken and fafel(?) wrap - Delish! And earlier thsi week had their jalapeno lamb burger special - def great! The place is a bit hidden and the decor is really bad lol. Went here on a nice single digit, frosty Boston day. I looked up the online menu which said a wing ding plate was about 6.50, not bad. The plate was actually 8.50 including the .30 fee because I used my card to pay **bring cash** Also, the cashier an older guy was so distracted he barely acknowledged me which wouldn't have bothered me much had he known whether he charged me for the food. I had to draw his attention from some device he was toying with to let him know I hadn't paid yet. They weren't busy at all, so it was weird that he seemed aloof. I left the place, got back to work, opened my plate was a bit irritated that my seven wings (i thought these usuallly come w. eight) had clearly been overcooked. I ordered egg whites and bacon. It was freshly cooked and came fast. I took it back to my office to eat and it was delicious!!! (1.26.16) I an on the fence with this place now. They charge you an extra 50 cent for an egg white they pour out of a container. That's $2 for one egg white. And they charge you for using a debit/credit card. Its getting ridiculous now. read more

I had a turkey club there which was the best one that I had in a long time. My lunch partner asked to split a sandwich and snce I was without cash, I agreed. We also ordered fries. The counterperson took note and brought our order to us on separate plates, so thoughtful. The portion was enormous ! Really I would have had a hard time finishing this sandwich. Splitting was perfect. Good quality cold cuts, generous amount of bacon and bread toasted to perfection. Really good. Nice friendly service and clean little shop. This place doesn't look like much. It's small with basic tables and walk up ordering in a basement like location. Just you're average breakfast and lunch sandwich shop. But I have to say I'm often in that area for work and hit it up and it's definitely above average. I've tried both breakfast and lunch. Omelets are especially large and tasty and with fresh ingredients. Have had sandwiches too and the chicken parm sub stood out as very tasty. The place is so unassuming I've probably been there 8-10 times and didn't even know the name until today. I had to make an effort to find the sign out front to write this review. Otherwise I would still not know. But food is what matters and it is definitely a good spot and lower priced option if near Government Center. read more

For about a year, whenever I'd pass the New Chardon Café - usually after it was closed - I'd eye it and commit to trying breakfast there one morning. The low breakfast prices, friendly-looking interior and location in the middle of everything enticed me. Now that I'm working in the area, one morning I decided to go in early and finally give it a try. I was a bit disappointed. It is as friendly as I hoped it would be; the guy who runs it is in there every day and he remembers names and faces and is very enthusiastic and nice. The food though, was just meh: the eggs were runny, the bacon wasn't crisp (kind of a requirement, in my opinion), the potatoes were a little bland. It wasn't *bad* - just not as good as I picture a little breakfast institution in town to be. They serve a wide variety of New England Coffee, probably the best coffee on the market, which is very nice. Overall,l a fine place to start your day if you work nearby, but not quite what I expected. read more

Nice full deli sandwiches, reasonably cheap. The BLT and Tuna Melt are exactly what you'd expect, which is what I'm looking for in a quick lunch spot - no surprises and nothing fancy. They could use some bread variety. The location is great if your downtown in gov. ctr or by the courthouse and need a quick lunch. Used to be cash only, but now I think they accept cards. In the spring/summer they put a couple tables outside, and its right across the street from the Ed Brooke courthouse which has a quiet little courtyard great for people watching. read more
