Directly opposite the State House, this sandwich shop cranks them out at lunch time. I stopped in post-lunch rush and jumped on a pastrami sandwich. A very good portion of pastrami, some provolone cheese and a few tomatoes (yeah, I picked all of that) with a huge portion of fries. Very nice people, freshly-made food, and great prices but I'm a little confused about what they define as "chicken salad"... I ordered a chicken salad sandwich (another Yelp reviewer mentioned their "infamous homemade chicken salad," which piqued my interest) but it was not chicken salad at all - just shaved chicken with the lettuce & tomato that come on any sandwich. Perhaps this is what is known as chicken salad in some places, but I was surprised that it was just dry shaved chicken without being mixed with celery, mayo, or anything else. It was fresh, but a little dry for my taste (not even any mayo on the bread). Maybe this was just a fluke and the person making the sandwich thought I only ordered a "chicken sandwich" so I'll probably still give them another chance for all the reasons I noted at the beginning, but I won't order this without asking more questions next time. read more

This place is located like across the street from the state house building in a very old money area of Beacon Hill. Next door to the New Jerusalem Church which basically fortified my new fond love of Fill-A-Busters. It's a nice area to walk around during the week to people watch. Lots of state govt political type. I was feeling a little adventurous that morning so I decided to go with a new menu item called the Pita Omelette Sandwich. I ordered the omelette western style with a cup of coffee for $5. Talk about a thick Boston accent.... I couldn't understand a word the cook said to me after I placed my order so I simply smiled and said "sure". My Pita Omelette arrived at my table and it was HUGE. The size of my face huge and it probably contained 4 eggs, peppers, onion, ham, and cheese. Pretty simple but perfect. For the location, this is probably one of the best priced breakfast/ lunch places around. During peak lunch time, the line was out the door. But don't get discouraged, because these guys work quick. The food is good. I got a cheeseburger plate and it came to around $5.50ish, nothing to write home about, but it was good. The portions are also great for the prices. I'm surprised Fill-A-Buster has so few reviews here, as it's such a mainstay in that part of Beacon Hill. Fill-A-Buster is located across from the State House on Bowdoin St., and it's pretty steadily populated by the numerous denizens of the Boston political scene -- from legislators to janitors. They're only open M - F, so it's clear that this place caters to the workaday stiff. I get breakfast here, and it's pretty solid. Nothing fancy (like real cheese), but it has a pretty decent, greasy-spoon-like quality about it. Good breakfast sandwiches, too. They make fresh muffins every morning, and these things go pretty fast! They're not shaped like traditional muffins, but more like cornbread, or something similar -- I must confess an unfamiliarity with such baked goods, myself, but I resolve to try one of these someday, served steaming hot and moist from the oven. Will update this review then. EDIT: So, I'm now munching on a fresh hot muffin from Fill-A-Buster, and they're pretty rockin'. They apparently all are corn muffins with stuff added in for good measure (like cranberries) or whatever). They are immense. They are $1. 'Nuff said. I've started a quest to create a map of the best breakfast sandwiches along my work routes (Jamaica Plain to downtown Boston, and various other places I end up), and this place is the first stop on my journey. Being a reporter in the real world, I always keep my ears open in the handful of establishments next to the statehouse. The fill-a-buster regularly comes through with at least one half-interesting critic to eavesdrop on. I can imagine it's where many of the old-school insiders must go, and it's definitely marked out as Boston Herald territory. I love the ambience of the place, kinda like a beach town hamburger joint with one little TV in the corner tuned to the news. FAB serves the traditional style sandwich, and they do a damn good job of it. I've had the bacon egg and cheese on wheat toast, and the bacon tasted really good. One fried egg, american cheese and plenty of yummy crispy bacon. You can also order it on a bagel. At most places the bacon is served in a tired, burnt or too greasy state, so the FAB earns a place on the map by virtue of pig alone. One note: it's a little pricey at $2.90. The average fella could probably down two of these easy, which puts the total at over $5. That's a no-no for us working stiffs. Perhaps it would be cheap to amp it up with an extra egg? read more

I've been a faithful Fill-A-Buster customer for as long as I've worked on Beacon Hill (over 5 years). I love that the guys know me by name and usually know what I'm going to order, it's always the Chicken Cutlet special if I go in on Thursdays! The food is great, they give you lots of food at a great price. It's greasy and sits heavy in the stomach but some days that's just what you need. Lots of people talk up the burgers and fries, which I love, but they also make a great spinach pie. I also recommend the Athenian Chicken, pastrami, and although I've never tried it, the Mac n Cheese looks awesome. They keep the food fresh and they make most of it right there. It gets pretty busy in the middle of the day so if you can, take an early lunch! But even if it is busy, the guys keep things moving and get your order to you as quickly as possible. read more

The best in Boston. If you ask for it made like a chicken parm it's one of the best chicken Parms in Boston. I also like breakfast for lunch, a bacon omelette. The spinach pie is so good and so big! I usually can have two meals out of it. The burgers are pretty legendary, I get a deluxe with an egg on it. The word "excellent" is insufficient to describe some restaurants. Among them is Fill-A-Buster, a remarkable establishment of Greek extraction masquerading as a downtown deli less than a block from the Mass state capitol building. After reviewing the thoughts of members here on Yelp, I made the trek downtown from Kendall Square to investigate what everyone seemed to be raving about. Needless to say, the yelp members here got it absolutely right. If you like Greek food, I dare you to find better for the price and the speed of Fill-A-Buster. I thought I was visiting a traditional American deli (perhaps I didn't read the reviews here closely enough) but in fact Fill-A-Buster is about as authentic a Greek deli as I have found since my wife introduced me to real gyros about 5 years ago. The food is fantastic and the aromas and fresh ingredients and delicious seasonings wafting from the open cooking area to the seating area makes you want to stay there all day just to breathe. I had a gyro with a "side" of french fries. I use quotation marks because there must about been at least 1/2 pound of french fries on my plate. The gyro was big, too. Eventually, I had to concede defeat lest my distended stomach burst. Satisfaction of your hunger here is guaranteed. I also found the staff and clientele in Fill-A-Buster to be unexpectedly pleasant and outgoing. Perhaps I happened upon them on the right day, but I got the impression that this deli was friendly and open to all. I wound up spending an extra 30 minutes there talking to the people seated next to me after my sandwich was done. How often can you say that about your first visit to a deli? I figured I'd get the same delicious goodness offered up by Karo's and Boston Kebab House without having to walk as far but the resulting meal was pretty disappointing. I really hate to do this because I have loved Fill-A-Busters for YEARS and have been going here once a week for the past 4-5 years since it is right up the street from my job. However, over the past month or two they have really gone down hill. One of the usual guys is missing and I guess he either ran things well and kept people on track, or they are just down people and the quality has started to suffer a great deal. The staff is still friendly and great, but they desperately need another person in the kitchen. My food over my past four visits has either been overcooked, or just plain tasted bad, or certain things were missing in my order, or like just now they added a ton of crap onto my sandwich that I never even asked for. It stinks but I'm finding it harder and harder to go here as I am batting 0 for 4 in my last visits. Most of us in the office were regulars here on Fridays, and each week we'd walk in and hear "HOW MANY CHEESEBURGERS!?!". I really want to love Fill-A-Buster, but it continues to be just okay for me. That being said, it's good for grabbing a quick lunch to-go. Any sandwich you order will be overflowing, probably too large to fit in your mouth. It's cheap, it's a lot for the money, and it satisfies your hunger while tasting just above mediocre. I can't complain. I can't exactly praise it either. A bigger positive, however, is the staff. They work amazingly well when the entire place is filled with people waiting in line to both order and receive their food. And they haven't managed to mix up my difficult orders yet. I'd probably like this place better if I liked falafel. Overall, regardless of its mediocrity, I'll continue stopping in for chicken salad every couple weeks when I'm in a pinch. read more
