Went to Patagonia for some things and having been to the Cafe a few years ago, thought it would be a great place for an early dinner especially after looking at the menu. Arriving at 1:15 there was a couple at the bar and we were the only ones at a table. The very friendly young lady server brought water and menus... but the menu was only one page and had a choice of one salad, three sandwiches and a burger. There was a special of the day ... a meatloaf sandwich that I ordered and it was quite good. I asked what happened to the huge menu we saw on line ... turns out they are now only open Saturdays from 11:30 until 2:30 and Friday evenings from 5 until 7 and that is by reservation. The dinner menu has a few more items listed and I will post the current menu. Very friendly, great service ... excellent food ... but very limited hours. We really enjoyed our visit to The Cafe in Sonoita. Allison was our server and she did a great job (I don't know if they switched servers, we did have a different server when initially seated?). She checked on us periodically to see if we needed anything, acknowledged us quickly and got our drink order out fast, and was pleasant to deal with. I had the featured burger, which was a fantastic mushroom and Swiss burger on a nice soft bun (the bun really was quite good!). My wife had the bison burger (she really enjoyed it) on an unusually good gluten-free bun , seeded with mixed seeds. You don't see a lot of restaurants offering bison, which we liked a lot. The French Fries were great and I mean GREAT. You don't walk away from THAT many dining experiences where the fries are something you remember well afterwards, but you certainly do here. Crispy, lightly salted, hot but not burning your mouth hot, delicious potato flavor. It would be a challenge to find better French fries anywhere. Yes, I said it. I'm not saying it's impossible, I'm saying it's unlikely. I also liked the ambiance here, it was quiet, you could have a conversation, I liked the artwork and the layout and spacing of the restaurant. And chef was very helpful when I contacted the restaurant ahead of time to ask about gluten-free options, he responded quickly and helpfully and I'm really glad we ate at his restaurant, and will definitely return when we visit the area again in a few months. read more

On a beautifully cloudy, monsoon wknd with Tucson attractions largely hibernating from the July heat/humidity we opted to explore Sonoita's wine country. Wine tasting shouldn't be done on an empty stomach so the first planned stop was The Cafe... I guess as in THE Cafe, Lol. And it lives up to its namesake. We ordered everything listed on the Special-of-the-Day menu which included a grass-fed burger with brie and bacon and a blue-cheese and tomato bisque soup. We got an extra side of sweet potato fries. All portions were decently sized (see pic of burger/soup) and more than filled us up with the requisite protein and complex carbs to sustain us for an afternoon of wine tasting. Service was excellent and attentive. TIP: if you're splitting an entree they will charge $2 to cut it in half and merely bring an extra plate or they'll charge a whopping $5 extra to formally divide the meal and place them on two separate plates before bringing them out to the table. We opted to have neither done and simply shared all of our entrees and sides from the plates they came on (and were charged $0 :) Parking is ample but it's a dirt/gravel lot which can get muddy during monsoons. PSA - this is now a reservation only restaurant. They have a link on their website to make reservations. DO NOT USE IT! We made online reservations and got an e-mail confirmation. But when we got there, the restaurant was closed. Interestingly, on the reservations page, there was a note about how rude it is to make reservations and not show up. Well guess what? It works both ways! Extremely rude that we rushed to get here on time, only to find the lights out and doors locked on a Saturday night. I did give the restaurant 3 stars because we have eaten here before and the food is amazing. To the owners: IF you are going to do online reservations....CHECK THEM! And be kind enough to call people if your plans change...just like you would expect us to do. read more

The Cafe serves a limited dinner menu with a list of favorites Thursdays through Sundays until 7pm. We enjoyed incredible weather on the back patio, some tasty shrimp and a portobello mushroom to share. We saw a fantastic wine list and listened to some great patio music from a bluegrass duo for an hour or two. We appreciated having a good option for foods in the small town across the street from our stay in the Sonoita Inn. We will be back! read more

OK. Ususally I try to write more in depth reviews around the places I stop, especially when they are out of the way. But the Cafe is aptly named, and is as non-memorable as they come. I tried the chef's special burger, my counterpart had a salad of some kind (don't remember what it was) and as quickly as we had walked in and sat, we had both forgotten the experience. Here is what I will stay. Not everything has to be amazing or memorable. Sometimes you just want something to eat, if that is the case the Cafe meets the mark. I write this with great sadness. For a few years, I've had such a wonderful experience at The Cafe. Today that all changed. Sadly, it was when my sister and family were along with me after driving 1,600 miles one way to visit. I ordered a burger and fries as usual, but this time the bun was black on top and bottom and the burger was tough and well-done, not medium-rare as I asked for. Unfortunately, our waiter never came back to the table after delivering the food. I finally hobbled up to the counter (I'm a disabled vet) to find someone who could help and pay for our meal. I explained what happened, and the waiter said he was sorry, but nothing else. And then the trouble really started. There was a younger guy leaning on the bar chatting it up with a young, tatted blonde and looked irritated that I even said anything. He explained that there was a problem with the griddle and he had 12 burgers on at a time. (There were four other people in the restaurant.) I said okay and waited for him to say they'd at least give me a discount for a burnt burger and bun. Nope. I said, "So, I'm stuck paying full price for a burnt burger?" The guy who had explained about the griddle had gone back to hitting on the blonde, so he was even more irritated at my interruption. He sighed, looked at me, and then shrugged his shoulders and said, "You don't have to come back again." I was shocked and didn't know what to say. I told him where to go and walked back to my table. As soon as I turned around and started limping back to my table, he started laughing at me! And then, after we left, he followed us outside, pointed at us, and laughed even more. We love this place! We come down to Patagonia every year and we always go here at least once. The food is good. They have lots of tasty pasta dishes. I enjoyed my spicy southwest pasta dish and my husband had no trouble putting away his bacon Alfredo pasta with shrimp. No kidding, this is a real thing and it's delish. I came here with my mom right after I finished my wine time at AZ Hops and Vines. I ordered a glass of Sauvignon Blanc cause I needed one more glass of wine to be satisfied and The Hamburger with a side of sweet potato fries. My mom had the Green Chile hamburger. The food was super delicious, as well as the wine I ordered (they have a long list of wine choices). The Cafe in Sonoita, Arizona is one of the Housholder Family Saunterers' favorite places to chow down after a long day out on the Arizona Trail. This place is really "Phat!" To start with, Bryce and I had the "Ape Burger" which changes each day. A half pound of beef cooked to order with Calamari Onion Rings, Coctail Sauce and Bacon loaded with Sweet Potato Fry's. Karolien enjoyed her Reuben with Homemade Broccoli & Gouda Cheese Soup. Ben scarfed down a giant piled high Grilled Green Chili Cheeseburger and Bianka ate up her kids's menu Grilled Cheese! After we were half way done scarfing down our eats the kids asked if we could come back here tomorrow! Tons of great reviews for The Cafe unfortunately our experience wasn't that great. Pros- friendly, prompt service, awesome selection of wine from the local wineries. Cons- ordered an eggplant parmesan which was ONE thin slice of eggplant over pasta. Hubs ordered a pasta dish and was just ok. Portions could have been bigger as we both left ready for a snack. Dinner prices are $12-20, for what the food was we felt like we overpaid. After reading other reviews sounds like lunch service and sandwiches are the way to go. read more

Came here for lunch after wine tasting in the afternoon. My girlfriend had been here before (don't mix it up with the other "Cafe" a few doors down) and raved about the delicious food. We were not disappointed. Great service; quaint, homey and comfortable decor; and the food was really good. We had a table of four people and ordered various things -- BLT on a croissant, Turkey Green Chili melt, Cheeseburger and finally what they referred to as the APE burger. ALL of it was great... the APE burger is a fun concept. You basically tell them what you like/dislike and the chef comes up with a special burger JUST for you. My husband likes spicy and traditional beef burger patty and basically told them nothing was off limits - just make it delicious. He said it was and it looked huge brimming with lots of toppings. They also carry some local wines here -- one of our favorites being the Fluffer from Hops/Vines so we had a bottle of that as well. I would come back here again for sure, soon. read more

My friend and I went to Sonoita to try a couple wineries and we were looking for a good place for lunch, so we went back to a place we had tried a while ago and we were not disappointed. This review is for a Friday a little after lunchtime, the one other time my friend and I had been there it was on a Saturday and it was busy and had a wait right at the peak of lunchtime. The food here was really good, and they have gluten-free options which is always a plus for me! I had the green chili cheeseburger with a gluten-free bun. The burger was cooked perfectly through to my request, the green chili had great flavor but was not too hot so that it burned my mouth, and this bun was actually the best gluten-free bun I have tasted! The sweet potato fries were great too! My friend had The Hamburger (yes that's it's official name) and she said it was very good. The atmosphere of this is place is cute, when I hear "The cafe" this quaint little place is exactly what I would picture. Our service was good. He was knowledgeable about the menu, if he didn't know an answer - he asked, he checked in on us multiple times throughout our lunch to ensure everything was to our liking. I would suggest trying this cafe if you're in the area! From my past experience though, if it's on a weekend be prepared to wait or call and make a reservation. Enjoy! read more

Discriminatory Against Disabled Veterans My family and I attempted to dine at this establishment this past weekend and were refused service. When I tried to explain to the staff that I am a disabled veteran (several in our group) and have medical exemptions due to disabilities, we were told that it did not matter and were refused service. I asked if we could be seated outside, and the waitress told us that no she could not do that. We proceeded to leave, and I decided to call and speak to the manager. I spoke to Adam and explained how his staff handled the situation. Adam responded by stating that he did not care that I am disabled and exempt from wearing a mask and informed us that he refuses service to those who will not wear a mask. Not only was Adam unsympathetic to veterans with disabilities and subsequent medical exemptions, but he also went on to use explicit language to the effect of "I don't have time for this bleeping bleep" before hanging up. We have frequented this establishment before; however, we certainly will not support a business that blatantly disrespects, and disregards disabled war veterans. Since the governor ended the mask mandate, it was unnecessary to act in such a manner and this is in violation of the ADA, especially since we asked for a reasonable accommodation (to be seated outside), as we could have walked to the outdoor dining area from the front door while maintaining distancing. No reasonable accommodation was provided, just the refusal of service. Businesses that exclude non-face-mask-wearing customers who claim a disability must reach a high legal bar. The ADA states that it is important to focus on how to provide goods or services to a customer with a disability in an equal manner. I urge all veterans not to support this establishment. I cannot imagine this business lasting for very much longer if the lack of customer service and the chef's unprofessional behavior is any indication as to how this business operates. In the meantime, I will be filing an ADA complaint. read more

We had plans to eat in Patagonia, closed and the Steak Out wouldn't open for two hours. Decided to try The Cafe. We had to almost beg to be waited on. I decided on the special, posted on a chalk board, and was told they were out of it. Why wasn't it erased? The server left again. Twice we had to find someone to take drink orders and food. I ordered the grilled cheese and onion rings. The color of the onion rings were dark and to me indicative of oil that needed to be changed. The grilled cheese was fairly greasy. Left half the food there. Maybe we hit it on a bad day. I doubt if I will give it another try. Bad service and food is not a great combo. read more

Every time we go to Sonoita - this is a must stop for us. We love going to The Cafe and having a glass of with with a well cooked burger. Again - Miss Plain Jane, I just get the cheese burger with Bacon, it's always good and well cooked. Even the fries are nice and crispy!! This last time we went we took some friends with us who wanted to try the APE Burger, but hate Seafood, so asked for no seafood - my husband, being the bold one that he is, said "I won't give any restriction, so I bet I will end up with a seafood burger!" and sure enough, he got a seafood burger. I can't remember one of the burgers, but I know it had some kind of salami or meat similar to it on it, and the other was a green chili with bacon and cheese burger, which looked amazing!! My hubs APE Burger turned out to be a salmon with lemon and capers, he loved every bite of it because salmon is his favorite meat! This was a great experience, and we enjoyed every minute of it, not only because of our own good company, but also because of our server! He is always great company and a nice person! I forget his name (sorry!) but, if we sit outside, he is always our server. AND! Why wouldn't you want to sit outside?! This little cafe is just about the only place in Sonoita to grab a bite to eat and I must say their quality is quite good. It seems like a nice little family run joint with lots of windows to overlook the Sonoita wine country. I ate here recently after a wine tasting and was impressed the Eggplant parm was a well cooked eggplant (not mushy) and a good amount of quality parmesan cheese. I really love this place! My kids loved the chicken strips and fries. I had the Green chile burger which was fabulous. My mom had the bleu salad. Everything was great. We might actually take a drive out here regularly from now on and visit here even though it's 45 minutes away. But... during lunch they were short staffed (15-20min just to order), I felt bad for the staff, especially the busser... she had to do coffee, payments, clean tables, bring menus, bring drinks for the entire outside and inside area. I took one star off because of the poor treatment to the staff. Food was good, no where near exceptional, slightly overpriced, basic. Maybe dinner is a different experience. Think of soup nazi from Seinfeld. The cook was yelling at us from the kitchen before the door even closed behind us. The food is not famous and sometimes their service is really poor. Clearly customer service Is an area they need lots of work, I would give them a 1 out of 10 on that. Ended up just leaving instead of eating. Stopped by on a whim. Originally I just had to go to the bathroom but my husband ended up talking to the host/bartender and was so incredibly nice and welcoming. We stayed and had hot tea, then ended up splitting a burger and sweet potatoe fries (which might I add was delish and probably the best I've had in a while!?) Comfy, quaint and cozy setting.
