Surprised that the place was empty. Nice faculty, spacious and clean. Not fired up about the iron mike pitching machines. Another plus was the facility was indoors, can't imagine training in the hot Arizona sun. Price is reasonable, I would return. read more

Had an appointment scheduled, drive an hour to get there and then told they didn't confirm day of, so no class today. Who does business this way? My daughter sprung the news on my wife and I that she's decided to go out for her high school freshman softball team. She's never played softball in her life, so we knew we'd have to seek professional help if we wanted her to have a chance of making it. Having driven by a thousand times, on a whim we dropped in to The Cages. The owner, Mike, greeted us warmly and spent about 10 minutes telling us about the place - amenities, lesson options, fitness training, prices, etc. His approach was genuine and no-pressure. He offers a 30 minute intro lesson for coach and student (and parents!) to evaluate each other for fit. If all goes well, he suggests taking 3 lessons on successive days to build on the fundamentals. After discussing it at home, we scheduled the intro session the next day. After the intro, continuation with 3 full 1 hr lessons was a no-brainer. Mike did an outstanding job of assessing our daughter's skills for a baseline, then implemented an incremental plan of attack to teach her the basics of a textbook softball swing. She started on the tee on the first day and moved to pitches on days 2 and 3. A few things that I especially appreciated: -He used a speedo to clock the speed at which she hit the ball off the tee on the first day (average of several swings), then again at the end of lesson 3. Improvements in her form resulted in a nice improvement in ball speed off the bat. -He encouraged me to listen in to the lesson and pointed out specific elements of her form to be aware of so we could be more effective with our practice time outside of the instruction sessions. -He used video software on his tablet to breakdown her swing in super slow motion, sometimes side-by-side with his swing. That helped her/us visualize both breaks in form and proper form. We could also see her progress from day 1 to day 3. -His coaching style is comfortable and positive, yet focused. He identified problems, pointed out the implications, then broke them down into actionable corrective drills. He seemed genuinely excited to help her become a better player. He loves what he does and is very experienced - and it showed. -After our 3rd lesson, he held true to his promise and followed up with her "velocity chart" (bat swing readings) and a list of the main points that he provided to her over the 3 sessions. We've printed them out so we can reference them during our own sessions and she can read them on her bulletin board to reinforce the positives. At the end of the 3rd session, he recommended she hit 500 or so more balls on her own to solidify the fundamentals of her swing before doing any more lessons. Once she has her swing down, we'll be back for more lessons so she can work on timing and adjustments to different types of pitches. If you're not in the market for lessons, The Cages also has (surprise!!!) CAGES in which you can hit off the machine or have a buddy pitch to you from behind the security of a protective screen. They also have bats and helmets and tees that you can borrow if you don't have your own. There's also a pitcher's mound setup on the back side that can be used for throwing and fielding drills. The bottom line is that our experience with The Cages was a positive one, just as much because of the people as the facility. Coach Mike is a great guy that has the skills to build better players. There's a ton of baseball trainers in the greater Phoenix area. However, Mike Flynn at the Cages knows his stuff, has been around forever and as far as I'm concerned he's an expert in youth development. He's helped develop young athletes forever and that experience is priceless. Keep in mind when you pick a trainer for your kids, what they know is important, how they break it down to a kid is more important. I've seen many an ex major leaguer with years of professional experience go into coaching for money and the big business aspect of it here in the valley. Many have zero ability to teach what they know to a child in a way they can understand. Just because you reach the top levels of a game does not mean you know how to show somebody else how to do it. Very few professional athletes are youth coach material. You have to have both skill sets...expert knowledge in baseball mechanics and expert ability to relate that to a child. Mike is top notch in both areas. Do your kid a favor and book a lesson, just don't take my spots! read more

Baseball is a big part of my family's life, and my boys have just started to get somewhat competitive in local leagues, and they're both on the young side of the teams they're on. I recognized quickly that I was not equipped to teach them the proper throwing and hitting mechanics, as all of my 'skills' were learned on the playground growing up, and I really didn't where to start. In addition, I could see, especially in my older son who was playing his first year of kid pitch, that they needed some help, and that the strikeouts were starting to impact their confidence. I'd been to the Cages a few time just to hit some balls (as I do occasionally), and had remembered seeing an instructor teaching a young kid, so I grabbed a flyer and bought a package from Mike (the owner), after talking to a couple other instructors. We are glad we did. I bought a package after a free initial evaluation. First of all, Mike is great with kids. My boys are 7 and 9 and prone to distraction; I was a little worried about that. MIke was extremely patient with them, and spoke to them with respect but also firmly as a teacher. But none of that would matter if there were no improvement. The impact was immediate. My older son went from striking out (or if we were lucky, walking) almost every at bat, to making consistent contact, hard contact, against some of the better pitchers in the league. More importantly, his confidence rose substantially, and it bled into other aspects of the game as well. Mike also worked with us in other areas of the game, throwing, pitching, etc. For my younger son, confidence was not an issue, but what Mike taught them both were solid mechanics, things I can help with at home as well. My only regret is that we didn't start before the season started. We'll definitely be back before our next season starts, and may join one of the summer camps as well. Baseball is a game of managing failure, even the best strike out. For my older son, gaining confidence was huge. Today after our last session, he said 'I can't wait for my game tomorrow!'. That was music to my ears and a testament to Mike's work. If you have kids who love baseball but may be on the fence or consider quitting because of a lack of confidence, I would recommend you check out the Cages and Mike. The facility is recently under new ownership and has had a lot of improvements since the pictures above. It is one of the few indoor facilities in the North Valley where you can rent a cage and get quality baseball and softball instruction. Well done on the transition Mike. I've been coaching little league for years. Recently took my son here for lessons with the owner, Mike. Amazing. Mike is knowledgable and a great teacher. Very patient yet kept my kid focused. Three lessons in three days and I noticed huge changes in my 10 year olds swing for the better. I will continue lessons here for hitting and pitching. Nice clean facility. We are visiting here from California and looked it up. The man was very accommodating even though we got there 25 minutes before closing, he let us bat the full 30 minutes. It has very nice equipment, lounge area, and vending machine. It reasonably priced and I highly recommend it. read more
