I recently used the Cakery for my bridal shower cake and my wedding cake after my now mother in law insisted that this was the best cake in Dayton and the only option for our wedding. We did not go anywhere else! I was rather disappointed after my bridal shower cake was not decorated at all to our specifications even after my mother in law had personally visited the store twice to insure that it was what we wanted. I can slightly forgive that it was not exactly decorated as we asked because frankly the cake itself is good but the bleeding black piping around the cake (which she specifically asked for NO BLACK PIPING) made it look like a goth wedding cake and not a happy occasion. Then came my wedding cake. About a week before the wedding I received a call from a lady stating that she wanted some clarification on the decoration of the cake because the consultant that I had worked with was no longer there and she did not have copies of the pictures I provided to her on the specifications of the design. So I emailed them to her and my mother in law went back into the Cakery (because I live out of state) and made sure that my requests were understood. Once again the cake design did not come out at all as we asked. I asked for an ombre turquoise from the bottom of the cake up with it fading into white and then a gold top of the cake with the gold cascading down giving the reverse ombre effect. I received an all turquoise cake with a completely gold top. I am rather disappointed that I spent nearly $800 on this cake and it did not turn out at all as I asked it too. Especially since there was pictures, phone calls and visits to the store to make sure that it was communicated properly. read more

My husband and I celebrated our 10th wedding anniversary so I thought I would splurge and get a custom cake to celebrate. It was SO worth the trip to Dayton for this cake! We ordered a white cake with chocolate mousse filling and banana buttercream icing, and asked for traditional piping in our wedding colors. The Cakery did an exceptional job- the cake looked and tasted great! The banana flavor in the icing was not overpowering, the cake was moist, and the colors exactly matched those used in our ceremony. We will most definitely be a repeat customer! read more

Besides the cake tasting good the 45 minute wait for our scheduled consultation appointment is ridiculous especially the fact that nothing more than a feined apology was given to us for waiting. Didnt even offer to have us come back at another time. They DO NOT have their stuff together over there and I do not reccomend them at all. read more

This is one of my favorite Dayton bakeries. They have the best strawberry swirl cake, and sugar cookies to die for!

I didn't buy a cake, but I got an eclair from their bakery window, so this review is based on the eclair only. The eclair was just okay tasting. The cream inside was a standard pastry cream (no vanilla bean), nothing special. The slab on top of choux pastry was average as well. This is better than the so called "eclairs" you get at the market or donut shop, for sure. It is closer to what a real eclair should taste like, but compared to one from a trained chef from France, such as the one of the famous TARTINE Bakery in San Francisco, this one is very average. read more

Super disappointed in their cupcakes.. I went to grab some cupcakes for me and my family and when we went to eat them this evening they tasted old and stale. Was a sad way to end our evening. I decided to stop in to get some dessert yesterday as I was driving by. Lots of good looking items in the case; I chose red velvet, orange, chocolate caramel and vanilla cupcakes along with a lemon bar. The cupcakes were wonderful and at $1.20 each quite the deal. Two Words....STRAWBERRY SWIRL. Which stands for Cake Heaven. I'm not even a big fan of strawberry cake and this stuff cake was fantastic.We got a sheet cake for a graduation and we all enjoyed a couple servings each. Perfect balance of cake to frosting ratio. I would have given it a 5th star if the cupcake versions were dry and way too much frosting. So glad I had the cake before the cupcakes or I may not have ever had it again. read more

I love this place. I appreciate good bakery (which sadly sparse in Dayton). Their cakes are awesome (tasty and light) not just a vehicle to shove frosting in your face. The frosting has an excellent balance of creaminess and sweetness. This is an excellent place for a special occasion or a special treat. I read the review by the lady who felt "pressured into picking." This small shop can get very busy (they sell a good product). There is nothing wrong with saying "I'm still making up my mind" but please understand that there are others who are picking up orders or otherwise know what they want. Move to the side and let them take care of their business. It wouldn't be an influx of customers that stressed the staff. They're used to that. It would be the person blocking the display area, to drool on the case, and stopping everyone else from picking up their orders. read more

I love this place and so happy they opened one in Troy! When I first tried there cupcake I was hesitant because other cupcakes in the area are not good. I thought they would be the same over sweet no flavor in the cake but I was wrong! They have the best cupcakes in the area! The buttercream is not too sweet so it doesn't over power the cake flavor. the cake flavor are perfect too. A lot of the cupcakes have no filling which I like because they allow the cake and frosting be the flavor. the frosted sugar cookie is soooo good! If you do any cupcake do the lemon, strawberry cupcake, and cookie and cream. I didn't give 5 star because some flavors are not the greatest like the chocolate mint and the prices are a little high. But overall they are worth the trip! read more

The Flavors are so great, the cake texture is perfect, it doesn't fall apart when you cut but yet its so moist :) Attention to detail. We purchased ribbon for a few tiers and they were placed just right. The real fresh flowers we had from our florist were placed onto the cake by the women who delivered the cake, she did a great job, all of the employees we nice and patient. The butter cream tastes so good! The detail they hand applied was so pretty! The prices are great for the quality of cake! The best cakes you will find in the Miami Valley; hands down. The reason it lost a point is because prices are much higher than at an average bakery. Where do I even start with the horrible service from this place. I went in and ordered a custom cake and the process took 20 minutes as every detail had to be specific, no problem, got my price and approval to make it from whoever approves those sorts of things. A week later I call to pay my order in full only to be met with complete confusion and more than a little attitude as to if I had ever even placed an order for a cake. Upon originally placing the order I had emailed pictures/requests and my info to the store so they pulled that up again and I proceeded to place my order AGAIN over the phone. Only to find that this time I could not get the "approval" to make that kind of cake. Mind you it's the same exact cake I had just ordered and gotten the thumbs up for the week before. At that point I lost all motivation to deal with these people and their obvious lack of organization, professionalism and communication amongst themselves. Luckily the cake shop was able to save the day for a slightly steeper price. To top it off I received a call from the cakery TWO DAYS before the party inquiring why I hadn't paid for my cake, upon informing the "gentleman" that I had canceled the order the previous week he promptly hung up on me. I don't care how good the cake tastes, they will never get my business nor will I ever recommend them. read more

My husband stumbled across this place on his way home from WPAFB one day and our blood sugar has never been the same. This little hole-in-the-wall-looking shop tucked into that hideous strip mall at Airway and Woodman belies the AMAZING goodies contained within. Shall I start with the cookies? About halfway through my pregnancy, I got sudden and uncontrollable cravings for sugar cookies. The frosted kind. My dutiful husband drove me, at 11 pm, to Dorothy Lane Market, where I assumed I would get the best sugar cookies in town. They were okay but a bit dry and heavy on the almond flavoring. The craving was controlled but not sated. And then. He surprised me the very next day with sugar cookies from The Cakery ... and my taste buds have never been the same. The texture, flavor, and even the icing were absolutely exactly what you want when you want an iced sugar cookie. I would give these cookies ten stars if I could. Because he is a smart man and knows that bad bad things would happen to him if he actually ATE one of the cookies he brings home for me, he always brings home a treat or two for himself as well - his favorites are the chocolate chip cookie sandwiches, which look sort of like an ice cream sandwich but with The Cakery's famous buttercream in place of ice cream. Yes yes, the cookies themselves are delicious, but that buttercream. Dude. It's silky, light, not tooth-achingly sweet, and doesn't leave that icky film on the roof of your mouth like most buttercreams. I will admit it: I am a frosting snob. I usually ask for a middle piece of cake because I just can't handle the sickeningly sweet goop that tops most birthday confections. The Cakery's buttercream has changed my opinion on cake icing. Apparently, I am not the only person who thinks so: they actually sell SHOTS of their buttercream to go. Which brings me to the cake itself: delicious. I've honestly only had a couple of different cupcakes and one birthday cake from The Cakery (the cookie addiction is enough to keep me permanently hyperglycemic for now) but each was excellent and actually tasted like the flavor it was purported to be. (What? You mean lemon actually tastes like ... lemon? Not artificial lemon flavoring? I didn't know this was actually POSSIBLE in 21st-century America!) I love walking in and seeing couples flipping through their photo galleries, choosing their wedding cake. I always have to restrain myself from walking over and telling them what a good choice they're making. And inviting myself to their wedding. ("No, no, I don't need dinner. Just a slice of cake.") I just wish they were open later in the evenings and on Sundays - my cookie cravings (I mean, THE BABY'S cookie cravings) do not adhere to normal business hours. read more

This bakery is rude and showed very prejudice behavior towards me, I wouldn't recommend them for any type of specialty services. There artistic skill lack neatness and the ability to replicate simple cake decorating. I had a past encounter where they didn't execute a cake to my liking nor did it compare to the picture that was provided. Instead of handing this matter appropriately like remaking the cake they only offered a percentage off, when I refused that offer is when the owner Tony got involved. He was just as rude and disrespectful as his employee. I got a very leery feeling that he assumed because I was of a different race other than caucasian that the situation wasn't a priority and that I should just take the percentage off and deal with the poorly designed cake. Coconut Macaroons and cookies were pretty good - totally average on the morning muffin and cupcakes. They were nice enough, they were busy...a little pricey, I thought. After seeing such good reviews on Yelp, my husband and I decided to stop here for a sugar fix. I got a Grandma's Sugar Cookie (the one with no icing) and a chocolate cupcake with strawberry buttercream and my husband got a dreamy orange cupcake. We also bought a slice of mocha chocolate cake. The owner was super friendly and welcoming, which was a big plus :) He gave us both a sample of their popular buttercream frosting. It was good- way better than that sh-t you get on grocery store cakes. Though I am not a big fan of buttercream, I enjoyed the sample. The sample was just the perfect amount of buttercream- which explains why the chocolate-strawberry cupcake was overwhelming for me. The first couple of bites were tasty, but after that it was just too much buttercream. I understand that it is a filled cupcake, but the cake was severely overpowered by the cream! There was like an inch of buttercream on the top of my poor little cupcake! Way too much! The sugar cookie was good- a little too crispy and dry for my liking. The mocha chocolate cake was good too- though it was also overwhelmed by the frosting and cream filling. Overall, this place is decent, but not really my cup of tea. read more

First time visit today, and I must say that I'm impressed! Didn't know a bakery of this level existed in lil' ole dayton. The owner was very friendly and gave me cake samples with detailed descriptions of their offerings. I ended up leaving with 6 cupcakes - orange, red velvet, oreo, snickerdoodle, key lime, and coconut. My favorite, by far, was the snickerdoodle (it really tastes just like the cookie!). Lemon key lime comes to a close second. I didn't like the middle of the coconut as much (it was a bit runny) and the orange had a funny aftertaste. The red velvet tastes typical (needs more cream cheese flavor in the icing). Oreo was delicious too. Next time, I'm going for more snickerdoodle and try some of their chocolate caramel cupcakes too. I'm so excited to have found such a gem!! I really appreciate businesses who value high quality ingredients and good presentations of products. Way better than over-priced, over-abundantly iced, lackluster, dry cupcakes sold in town. read more

I will never recommend The Cakery of Dayton to anyone EVER again. We booked with them about 10 months before our wedding, we were physically IN the shop more than a month before our wedding finalizing the colors of the cake, we sent them photos of the bouquets for colors as requested while IN the shop and specified what should be each color...YET they STILL called me THE NIGHT BEFORE our wedding WHILE I was in our rehearsal dinner to confirm the colors of the cake (THEY SHOULD HAVE DONE THIS A WEEK OR MORE IN ADVANCE--NOT THE NIGHT BEFORE), and THEY STILL GOT OUR CAKE WRONG! Our colors looked like turquoise and yellow! Our main colors were turquoise and fuchsia in reality. The cake looked pitiful and did not match our color scheme...despite them having the photos stapled to their paperwork--it looked totally out of place. We did go in the Monday after the wedding to discuss this HUGE error. Messing up a birthday cake is different from messing up a wedding cake--you'll likely have more birthdays and thus more birthday cakes--whereas I plan on being married only once--and now this ugly cake that did not match and for which we planned and paid is in our pictures and in the pictures and minds of our guests. It was the worst part of the wedding (at least I am thankful for that--everything else went smoothly). The Cakery did refund us for half the cake cost after discussing with them their irresponsible and negligent error. The cake was delicious--I will give them that--but they severely lack in professionalism and organization in calling me the night before the wedding, as demonstrated. I would never trust them enough to recommend them to a friend for their wedding. I wouldn't want the same for anyone I love. I should add that the refund check memo read, "Sorry we did not live up to your expectations" rather than "Sorry for our error." I felt that was a failure to admit their mistake and lack of organization which resulted in a wrong product, and instead was an attempt to cover their own behinds and divert away from admitting their wrong. They screwed up. They should at least have the professionalism to admit when they err rather than trying to act like it was simply a failure of living up to our insinuated high expectations. Their goal should be to meet a customer's requests and what is discussed in and agreed upon in their sale. As a business, they should live up to what they promise a customer, and for what the customer paid--and when fail to do so, issue a sincere apology for their negligence. Not a half or insincere apology. Save yourself the stress and headache--they do not have their stuff together, and are not professional enough to offer even a sincere apology. I have been going to The Cakery for many years and have always loved their cakes. For the most part, I had never had any problems even though my friends had stopped going their because of poor service. Well I guess you can say today was my day. I went into the Cakery to pick up my two cakes that I had ordered. Both wedre the exact same size, just the message on top was different. As the lady opened the box to show me my cakes, one of the cakes was at least 2 inches smaller. The owner Tom came over and i was expecting him to provide good customer service. Boy was I wrong. Tom proceeded to argue with me and persuade me that the cakes were the exact same size, also saying that no 2 cakes will be the same. He ended up givng me $5 dollars off which I could care less about. I took the cakes because I was left with no choice today but rest and assure that was the last $50 this place will ever see from me. Tom I would reccomend that you refocus and learn some customer service skills. Otherwise you will be left with no business. As of today, you just lost my business!! read more
