GRIST 5/5 Another Shout Out to YELP! Excellent Yelp reviews for Grist from reviewers, and this property has been on our to do list for some time. Considerations: Not the drive downtown; we have been enjoying this drive for 60 years. Parking is a consideration; yes, on the street, and that was no problem. Problematic are the parking meters, and we have set up accounts and used the "system" for a year plus. HATE this system; we like quarters, and we like swiping a card. Second, the shortage of tables in Grist remains an issue; yes, there are 3-4 tables, but will one be open? Seating is supplemented with a board facing the window. And there are the high tops in the adjacent room. We were seated, and a family of 7 with toddler almost filled Grist; thankfully they rebounded to the adjacent high top room. Grist is the BEST Dayton area Italian restaurant, and the two culinary school trained restaurant owners ensure a great dining experience. We have dined in Italy several times. But how do 2 owners and 5+ employees sustain a business model such as Grist? Coming in March is the renovation of the former Roost into a prized Italian restaurant (a few blocks east.) My wife and I are not concerned with meal pricing, but we do insist on good food, and Grist excels. Menu is small, and that is fine. Ambience is clean and clever. Service is at the counter; not a McDonald's counter. The young lassie is self-assured, and is capable of explaining the menu. My wife spied the desserts and selected two for herself, and enjoyed until the pasta arrived. Independently, we both arrived at Taglitelle Alla Bolognese. Grist tagliatelle is very similar to linguine, and the Bolognese is excellent. We shall return.

S'more tart. Not too rich. Just right.

Great place. Highly recommend it. Be sure and get reservations. It's pretty small. Their specialties are homemade pastas and great desserts. It's a pretty small menu. No liquor but beers and wines. You can either order by mobile or at the counter. Everything is delivered to your table. Service is prompt and good. They also do carryout including fresh pasta.

I'm not even gonna say much - the photo speaks for itself. The Italian Stallion is a hell of a sandwich.

Absolutely delicious We had the best lunch. Intimate but friendly atmosphere with delicious food from soup, sandwiches to fresh pasta. My husband said it was the best meatball sub he has ever had. He is Italian. The kids pasta was so good I would order it as my own dish. My only regret is I didn't try the tiramisu.. yet

One of the best restaurants I tried during my month in Dayton! Great vibes. Yum pasta. The menu changes frequently! We tried short rib agnolotti, butternut squash ravioli, mushroom risotto. The mushroom risotto was super yum this night. I recommend all of them tho! Focaccia was okay. We got a full that was too much for two gals. Panna cotta was yummy but super flavorful side.

Soup of the day: tomato bisque

Located in downtown Dayton. There is parking along the street. M-F is metered, but free on weekends. A parking structure is adjacent to it and still close in walking proximity. Restaurant: First impression was how clean and welcoming it was. You order your food at the counter then find a seat. They'll bring the food out to you when it's ready. Food: FRESH! Everything was delicious (see photos of what was ordered). The kids enjoyed their pasta; the tomato bisque came out piping hot with a slice of sourdough and that was delicious. My youngest and I are huge fans of tomato bisque and this did not disappoint us. My husband got the Fire & Ice sandwich with focaccia bread. Oh, wow. The bread was fluffy, not dry. The ingredients all merrier together to bring out an amazing flavor profile. The butternut squash pasta dish was to die for. Omg. It reminded me of being back in Italy. The sauce that was used was so light and airy -- and the bread it came with was the perfect addition to soak it all up. Dessert: there is a case of desserts awaiting to be bought, but we'll have to come back when we have room in our stomach! Overall, this is a place we will be coming back to. Hands down worth coming to.

Grist has long been on our list of places to try, but they have limited reservations that book up quickly. The ambience is quite unique. It's set up as a fast casual restaurant but with high quality ingredients and hand made pasta you would normally find at a high end, white table cloth restaurant. They show you to your table but then you order at the counter or via a QR code on the table. The menu rotates and it is simple, to the point. We tried a variety of things, starting with a half loaf of focaccia and meatballs. For entrees, we got the pork raviolini and tagliatelle bolognese. Desserts we tried a chocolate chip sea salt cookie and s'mores tart. The food was brought out incredibly quick. Everything was absolutely delicious. The pasta was next level and we savored every bite. We particularly liked the chili crunch on the pork raviolini, but again, everything was delicious. We would definitely come back for lunch, and highly recommend giving Grist a try if you're reading this. You'll want to plan ahead though as the dinner reservations do book up quickly. Side note, we went on a Saturday and the typically metered street parking was free.

    Harvest salad

Had a lovely lunch here! The harvest salad was delicious, dressed well and the baked apples were a nice touch. The meatball sub was warm and flavorful. The cacio e Pepe noodles were a little too al dente for our taste. You order at the front, but food comes out quickly!

Half portion of our second course choice (we indulged in sharing 3 starters so shared an entree)

Location; 46 W Fifth St. Dayton Ohio Website: https://www.eatgrist.com/menu Menu: see website* Hours: see website Parking; plenty of street parking, payable on app or free after 6pm Weekdays, free on weekends *menu is changed frequently. Don't worry - it's always well-appointed. Grist is a must-dine. Open for lunch and dinner 5 days a week, this is an incredible restaurant. In-house made pasta, breads, and desserts accompany outrageously delightful features which are updated often. We love the menu, the space, the team, and the wine list... always a great experience. Tonight we started with half-loaf of focaccia bread and a white wine flight. Never skip the bread. The wine flight is a great way to try 3 wines and decide on your glass or bottle. For our next starter, we selected the shrimp melange (ceviche), served cold with lightly fried rice paper and shaved vegetables. The shrimp was perfectly prepared and this starter had great flavor, light and refreshing. The rice paper crisps were the perfect pairing. Including the bread, our second dish was completely devoured. This is the point where strategic planning kicks into gear. Do you order the 2nd course or continue with starters? This visit... we chose very wisely. The starter/shareables features menu intrigued us so we decided to order another starter, the apricot and burrata option and 2 glasses of wine. This course is served with toast (the bread here is phenomenal and worth the nutritional splurge) - a mound of burrata (mozzarella's sister, a creamier cheese) is covered with hibiscus and raspberry foam and surrounded by minced apricots and chopped nuts. The melody of flavors was divine and this was a great choice. Finally, we chose an entree to share - a sweet corn agnolotti. Stuffed inside little pillows of hand-shaped pasta, the creamy cheese and sweet corn filling paired beautifully with black summer truffle shavings and pecorino Romano cheese. An outstanding meal we won't soon forget. Before leaving, we picked out 2 cookies from the dessert case for later, giving one preciously perfect chocolate chip cookie to a beloved family member and saving the last to share together later. Do yourself a favor and book a reservation for Grist. Remarkable experience! Tips; 1. Make an online reservation. In advance. This is a small restaurant and popular. Don't be disappointed. Reserve your table. 2. Do not skip the focaccia bread. Available as a half or full loaf - it is a rosemary sea salt focaccia fresh out of the oven with a crispy exterior and fluffy interior, ready for a smear of butter. Order this as you decide on the next course. 3. The ordering method is outstanding. Each table has a code to scan and order at your own pace. You also pay the bill this way - best method anywhere (you can order at counter if you're living off the grid.) 4. Don't bother looking at the menu online. It changes often. Count on having 4-5 options to choose from in each course, but you can order whatever you wish.

I don't give five stars everywhere I go but I have to rave about Grist! I'm so glad I stopped in here for dinner on a work trip because the food was amazing. I've already raved about it to three people! The bread and butter is a no brainer and great start to the meal. The menu changes frequently so what was online wasn't what they had in the restaurant. No biggie - all the options sounded good. The staff was so friendly and quick to give personal recommendations. Try this place - you won't be disappointed

We reserved a table for two on a weekday and there were surprisingly still quite a lot of people here. We order a few entrees and appetizers via the mobile ordering system. It's a great date night spot with a clean and quiet atmosphere. I also noticed you can get some breads to go as well
