Pixy Stix. Oh how I used to love my Pixy Stix. And Fizzies. I loved Fizzies since they looked like colored Alka-Seltzer tablets. Pixy Stix looked more like rainbow-colored coke lines, but what did I know of such illicit drugs when I was seven? Now I can open the floodgates of my baby boomer nostalgia with the Candy Store. Abba-Zabas. Necco Wafers. Gumballs and Gummies. Candy Buttons and Chuckles. They're all here along with perfectly lined up jars of colored candies and all patterns of daylong suckers arranged like a big fan (see photos). Such a light and airy space with all the fussy, white-on-white touches one would expect from a shop with merchandise that is nothing but color. The owners are genuinely nice, a perfect match for all the sweet treats they serve here. For those too young to experience such menopausal flights of diabetic whimsy, the store offers fancy-schmancy European licorices, candy bars for homesick Brits, premium chocolates from around the world, and even French chocolate "olives" made with nougatine. read more

What a cool find!!! I still remember my childhood days when my friends and I would sprint to the neighborhood candy store with 100 Yen squeezed tightly in my sweaty palm. Same excitement could be re-lived at the newly opened candy store in Russian Hill, now without needing to beg my grandma for money. So I stand in the middle of the store and say to myself, 'now that I am an adult, I could afford to buy any candy in the store.' Cool. So, why would I go to the candy store when I could get my sugar fix at Walgreens or Costco? 1) Try asking the man in a red vest at Walgreens to explain to you about how each candy is manufactured and you'll get laughed at. At Costco, good luck finding anyone to talk to. Here, Brian was so knowledgeable about all the products they carried; we left the store so much smarter. 2) Try samples! They would be more than happy to assist. 3) You are not forced to buy a huge bag. Buy per pound. 4) Quality products. While some may look like the ones you see at Safeway, they taste completely different. Even the gummy bears tasted different. You could tell that the owners put in a lot of thought into their selections. TIP: Talk to the owners Diane and Brian, who are very helpful in helping you discover what you've been missing. For example, I had so much fun trying different liquorice candy. I've read before about how these authentic ones made from roots of licorice plant tasted very different from Twizzlers, which doesn't contain licorice at all. Is it a destination store? If you are candy nerd, yes; but for most of us, you probably wouldn't drive for miles just to check out this store. It's definitely about quality rather than quantity! haha Everything in here is nicely displayed and almost has a modern feel. The store is small and kinda hidden on Vallejo, but it's right next to this antique store. When I came here last week, I didn't know what to get. At first all I wanted was white chocolate. Sadly they don't carry many things containing white chocolate, except for these matcha caramel balls!! ohhh Have you ever had a green tea chocolate flavor with caramel inside? Me neither! Those were about $12/lb (1/4lb minimum purchase). My son and I visited yesterday, April 13, 2015 and had a wonderful visit. I was about to put my little guy in his car seat when he saw the candy store and dragged me in here. We've been here a few times before but the lady yesterday was so helpful so I had to leave a review. My son is obsessed with watching Kinder egg videos on YouTube and we were so happy to see them here. It's hard to find them for sale anywhere so I bought about 8 and my little guy was so happy! The lady helping us was so patient and helpful. Especially because my little guy is impatient and can be a lot to handle. He is a little boy after all. I have been here soooo many times, that I always know what I'm going to get. I never get the licorice because I'm not a licorice type of guy. I get chocolate covered gummy bears, German gummy bears, the sour strawberry bricks, and the Swedish fish. Diane is a kind person, me and my mom are friends with her. It is expensive candy, $22 a pound for most of the candies. I live nearby and it's down the street from a Starbucks. I cannot forget to mention the Nik-L-Nip. Those are goooooooood. went today for the second time and was not pleased. candy is good, sometimes stale because it's not stored in airtight jars. custom bags are by scoop or you can buy pre picked bags. 2 of the women working were quite rude and annoying (white, middle aged). i was looking at the prepackaged mix to see which one i wanted. 4 times they told me, very condescendingly and like I was stupid, that all the bags were the same and they had a calculated system in packing them. the bags are not the same, bought 2 bags and they each have some different pieces of candy in them. it was quite off putting to be told the same thing 4 times. am i not allowed to look at the candy i'm purchasing? a women of the same demographic as the 2 workers was also looking at the pre packed bags before me and wasn't told anything by the workers. if i am paying $25 for a pound of candy, i have the right to pick which bag i want, regardless if they claim they are all the same. i will be going to a different candy store next time. this place is too expensive to be having such awful employees treating customers like they're stupid. save your money and go to world market, they sell the same candy. read more

Professional. Helpful. Fast delivery. I am definitely a fan. A friend brought sakura matcha kit kat bars from Japan and I absolutely fell in love with them. These are not to be confused with the matcha kit kat bars. After realizing I could never go back to eating regular kit kat bars, I went on a mad search to get my hands on more sakura matcha kit kats. As luck would have it, I found a food blog that mentioned The Candy Store and showed pictures of the kit kat box I so desperately craved. I was beyond ecstatic! I sent an e-mail to confirm they still had the kit kat bars in stock. Within a few hours, I received a pleasant reply from Diane letting me know they did. Score! The next day I called the store and was warmly greeted by a gentleman. I wish I remembered his name because he provided me with exemplary service. He explained to me that he was not sure when they would have more in stock since it depends on how often a supplier goes to Japan. Because of this, I decided to purchase their remaining 6 boxes (comes with 3 pair of kit kat bars). This was a total of $30 and it was $10 to have it delivered to my house. Please do not judge me for spending $40 on kit kat bars...it was so worth it! I will definitely stay in touch with The Candy Store. Real cute store with lots of jugs of good looking candy everywhere. Walked in because I was bored during my lunch break and just couldn't resist purchasing some. Not your typical candy store where you can get your own bag and fill it up with whatever candy you please. You have to buy in increments of at least a quarter pound. Although I'd much rather fill my own candy bag and buy however random amount I want, they don't operate this way. This candy store is a bit more classy, I would say. But at least they do allow you to sample whatever candy you'd like if you ask! I chose a quarter pound of the German gummy bears, sour strawberries, and the pineapple gummy. The price came out to be $4.75. All three gummies were absolutely delicious, with the pineapple being my favorite. The kid and I went to their 1st anniversary party last night. It's a cute little shop, bright and lined with jars filled with every crunchy, chewy, gummy or chocolately thing you could ever crave. There's a great mix of nostalgic, offbeat, obscure and luxe items. My girl is invariably dumbstruck whenever we visit...her eyes huge and her mouth hanging open, trying to take it all in. She chose a candy lipstick, necklace, and watch, all of which mysteriously got eaten before dinner. Not sure how she managed that. I indulged in candied orange peel bits covered with dark chocolate. This is a cute little candy shop. With a generic name, The Candy Store, they definitely offer a very diverse collection of candy. The interior is decorated in a simple all white with their full selection of candy. They offer candy from around the world including some domestic that are also hard to find in the Bay Area. After sampling a few of the candies, I bought some candy. Peanut Butter Malt Balls, Chocolate Toffee Pistachios, and Coconut Curry Cashews. My favorite is the Chocolate Toffee Pistachios, they are soo delicious and great to just nommed on. The clerk was right about the coconut curry cashews, they were almost savory but still very interesting nonetheless. A totally cute little store devoted to candy, what's not to like? My friend and I popped in here while waiting for our table at Polker's around the corner, and it was just too much fun. My friend's a regular here and gets these things called French Stones, which are candies like look like real river rock--trippy! That's the kind of stuff you'll find here: unusual, artisanal, and just plain cool. The very nice salesgirl let us try all kinds of samples. Tucked off Polk Street, The Candy Store has a warm, welcoming vibe to it and once you're inside, you won't be disappointed. It's like Willy Wonka gone right! I needed party favors for a tea party at the very last second and they effortlessly rose to the challenge. The super nice lady let me sample everything I wanted (Me + Candy = Sugar Coma). I ended up getting bags of gummy butterflies, dark chocolate covered almonds and gummy bears. ALL WERE EXCELLENT!!! The packaging is darling (simple, clean and elegant) and the customer service is flawless. The lady helping me was always nice, polite, smiley and efficient. If that's not the mark of an excellent business, I don't know what is. Pretty good selection of lesser known international candies. The store itself is pretty small but in general, a nice selection of colorful treats! Most candies in jars on the shelves behind register are $18/pound. Italian and other imported chocolate bars in the circles on the wall were around $8-12 each. Instead of purchasing a dark cacao bar as I originally intended, I decided to go with the bulk and purchased $12 worth of some gummy and some chocolate treats, including the sugary fruit slices, crunchy bears, sour stars, rainbow chews (which have marshmallow in the middle, awesome!), mint chocolate malt balls, chocolate toffee pistachios, chocolate covered espresso beans, and chocolate covered strawberries. I just had the saddest experience in this store. Every year, I come to The Candy Store, so that I can fill my children's advent calendars with about $100 worth of lovely and delicious candies over the course of the month. I have done this for several years now. Today, I went into the store to make a similar purchase and was met with an unfortunate experience with the very surly owner. As she was putting the festively-wrapped chocolate Santas, stars and ornaments into a bag for me (I was asking for specific colors and numbers of each color -- 2 of the red stars, 2 of the gold Santas, e.g.), she told me that she has a policy against hand-picking specific numbers of candies or allowing the purchaser to the pick specific colors. Rather, customers must "take what they get" in "scoop" fashion instead. She told me that as a Small Business Owner in San Francisco, she needed to have this "rule" because when she is "slammed," she cannot accommodate such requests. As I looked around the shop, I asked her why she felt she needed to say that when I was the only person there. She told me that she was "going to do this for me THIS time," but that I should know about the rule for the future. I told her that I understood that if she had been busy it would be a different story. Her customer service practices did not kick into gear, and she refused to relent and continued to drive the point home. I was speechless, and as I looked at her stupefied, she wrapped up what I had, gave me the bag "on the house" and "dismissed" me from the store. I wish I had taken the bag with me in retrospect, but, of course, I did not. All I can say is HAPPY HOLIDAYS to you, Owner of the Candy Store. I was determined to use my groupon that I purchased for 10 bucks. I get 20 bucks worth of goodies of my choice. We didn't get there yesterday cause we were too busy walking the streets to Marina Green to see our Blue Angels. Walked a few blocks towards Vallejo and found The Candy Store, my goodness, this place had stuff from my youngin days, lol....The lady greeted us even though she had a few customers in there already, she still made the effort, 1 star for that, I felt welcomed! My man got these chocolate gummy bears, a lemon marshmallow log , coconut candy bars and some salty and sweet brittle. Hey, wasn't this suppose to be my groupon? Some may be overpriced, the stuff you can get most places specifically, but at least half or more of their selection is extremely hard to find and that is what separates them from the rest. The Candy Store is almost like an installation art piece, like a Wayne Thiebaud painting come to life. Clean white walls and clear glass jars house the pastel bon bons beautifully. Over sized multi colored lollipops adorn the shop like candy bouquets. You can find old school dots, liquid wax filled juice bottles, European candy bars, gumballs, jaw breakers, unique chocolates and caramels, gummies of all sorts, Swedish fish and my new found favorite - licorice chalk. I just had a truly unfortunate experience at The Candy Store, and will NEVER patronize this shop again. The candy is horrifically overpriced and the customer service is virtually nonexistent. There are so many artisan candy shops here in SF, do yourself a favor and try a different one. For those of you who want the backstory: I purchased a GroupOn coupon last year for The Candy Store, and promptly lost track of it. I remembered it last week, and printed it out. On the face of it, it says "Expires On: Sep 16, 2010." Now, in my considerable shopping experience, that means that I have until the close of business on September 16, 2010 to redeem said coupon. I went in on that date, and told the girl behind the counter that I wanted to redeem my coupon. She responded that I couldn't because they all expired on September 15. I showed her my printout, which clearly said "Sep 16", but she said that the owner was unwilling to honor any more GroupOn coupons. I asked the shopgirl to call the owner, and ask her whether mine could be an exception, as it clearly had September 16 as an expiration date. She obliged, and after a few words with the owner, the shopgirl wordlessly handed me the phone. The owner, Diane, was rude, abrasive, and far from apologetic. Instead of honoring the coupon, or offering any kind of deal to soften the blow, she practically barked at me over the phone, told me I was in the wrong, and then had the gall to say that a coupon which "expires on" a certain date isn't any good on that date anyway. Huh?? Needless to say, I went out of my way to visit this store and was thoroughly castigated for my efforts. I will NEVER go there again, and will make a point to steer all of my friends away from this establishment. It's not about the money, but rather the principle of the thing. Good customer service is working with the customer, in hopes that they will come back. Bad customer service is completely refusing to work with someone who has a valid issue. read more

Trader Joe's ruined me for life. I am addicted to Puntini candy (http://www.metrocandy.com/CHIPS-PUNTINI-FRUIT), because they're only 2 1/2 calories per piece. And they taste delicious. And the wrappers are so colorful and cute. But Trader Joe's stopped carrying Puntini awhile ago. For awhile, I thought I would never see them again.. until I walked into a salon on Polk St. and saw a big jar of them sitting in the waiting area. I immediately asked one of the girls where they got the candy, and she told me that they had them at The Candy Store right around the corner. AND THEY DID. I went inside and immediately bought a 1/2 pound of Puntinis. The lady was very nice, helpful and talkative, while the guy seemed to just sit there and smile (maybe he was amused at how excited I was to see a simple Italian candy). The shop carries some unique candy that isn't entirely "American." It also carries good ol' marshmallow Fluff (I never knew it was called that.. I just knew it as marshmallow cream). Prices are slightly high per pound, but it was undeniably a cute, clean, colorful shop to pick up some goodies for yourself or others. read more

One of the smaller candy shops in town (not as tiny as Fiona's though), the Candy Store carries an assortment of regional and imported (British, European) candy from low (Smarties, Lemonheads, lollipops, jawbreakers, gummy candies, licorice) to high end (Michael Mischer truffles) in a sleek boutique setting. For Christmas, they filled clear plastic shaped ornaments with candy (gummy bears, candy blocks, etc.) Cute idea but I wasn't expecting eight chocolate Caffarel Santas in a plastic ornament to cost $8. A marshmallow rope wound up costing $3 but then I looked at it more closely and realized it was from France. A small bag of flying saucer UFO candy (maybe with 20 UFOs) was $5 at the Candy Store; you can get a bag of 35 for $2 at EconomyCandy.com. Genevieve Y. was sweet enough to surprise me with a jar of Papabubble "I Love NY" mix candy. It looks like slices of hard candy sticks and the pieces each have names of NY boroughs (e.g., The Bronx, Manhattan). I thought it was cute and urban but I didn't realize till afterwards that Papabubble is a cult brand. Much of the candy sits in glass jars on shelves behind the register, which makes it less accessible. I didn't really look at the candy in the glass jars - it seemed like a hassle to ask about those though the woman behind the counter was very nice. On the left side they had candy bars and chocolates. I think they need more signs describing the products because I was surprised by what I purchased and didn't know what some items were. Sweet Dish and Miette do a much better job at labeling their items. read more
