Unsanitary. Understaffed. Unsafe…read more I moved my mother into the memory care wing of this facility just over a year ago and could not be more horrified by the conditions and lack of care that I witnessed. This includes multiple, documented incidents of: 1. bed bugs infestation 2. gross medication mismanagement (my mother was given a triple overdose of one medication, dispensed another resident's medication, and had her emergency inhaler destroyed without authorization) 3. residents left soiled and neglected 4. serious falls among various residents that resulted in broken hips for two of them 5. constant staff turnover and 6. increased dependence on poorly trained temp workers, etc. Given other glowing reviews, my comments may seem like an outlier. However, it is actually a reflection of the drastic decline of Merrill Gardens in the past 10 months. Despite repeated efforts by myself and other families to address these issues with management and several, separate, filed complaints to the Department of Social Services, leadership has failed to properly respond and course correct. As a result, we have been forced to remove our loved ones and place them elsewhere for their safety and well being. Given how Merrill Gardens treats its most vulnerable residents (those with severe dementia), I would highly discourage anyone from considering this facility; it not only demonstrates their lack of care and quality but also their lack of humanity.

When I arrived, she was welcoming and had such a positive energy. She showed me the entire facility, including a couple of available room options. She also answered all of my questions candidly, which I truly appreciate. She also brought in Lauren, the Resident Care Director, to provide a preliminary care estimate. Both were very patient and extremely kind, listening closely to my descriptions of my dad's care needs and preferences. I got a definite sense that I could trust Lauren to be accountable for my dad's physical well being based on her descriptions of protocols for the residents' care. The facility is lovely and spotless and is located in a beautiful, tree-lined area of Rolling Hills Estates. It has an upscale vibe, and the residents I observed appeared very happy to be there. It is definitely well worth checking out for your loved one!

Life gets a little easier knowing your loved one is safe at Silverado Memory Care. From housekeepers to management, everyone handles everything with skill and compassion. A friend of my mothers suggested that we investigate Silverado Rolling Hills after doing 1 month of in-home care, very expensive, and 1 month at a board & care facility, not enough stimulation, and interaction. I am so glad we did. Why the 5-star rating: 1. Safety: Mom feels safe here. She feels she can express her needs; she is seen and is heard. 2. Mental health: Mom has a smile again and back to her sharp wit. 3. Staff: The staff at Silverado RH are terrific. From the front desk crew to maintenance crew, to care caregivers to the activities team to the administrator, everyone is nice, compassionate, competent, and really do care for the residents. I can reach out anytime of day and get a quick answer and get pictures of mom every few days without even asking. 4. Cleanliness: I have yet to drop in on my mom and find her or the facility dirty or the lingering odor of urine. They clean every day, paint walls when they get scuffed by wheelchairs/walkers and make sure any messes are picked up quickly. 5. Activities: There is always something going on, painting with watercolors, live music, wine tasting, drum circle, flower arranging, outside excursions, chair aerobics, bingo, lecture series, manicures, face masks, the list goes on. 6. Community: when you visit, you get to know other residents and their families. The common theme is that their LO is also happy and thriving at Silverado RH. 7. Food: delicious. Friends and family members can join their LO for a meal at no cost. Just give them a heads up and they will save you a seat. 8. Pricing: one price, every month, not ala carte options like many other residents. Only extra cost is for the incontinence package if you opt in for that. Bottom line, mom is thriving, has a great team around her, she feels safe and enjoys her roommate and other residents, some which are birds and dogs. And our family has peace of mind knowing that she is well taken care of. Thank you Silverado Rolling Hills team for helping her and us through this journey.

Since then, new management has refused to honor the original agreement in full. Despite providing documentation, proof of approval, and fulfillment of the work exactly as requested, I was only partially paid and am still owed $1,400. It's disappointing to complete a high-level, time-intensive project in good faith--especially for a major event--and then have a company refuse to take responsibility for the commitments made by their own leadership. This isn't just about payment--it's about integrity. Vendors should be able to trust that businesses will honor their agreements, regardless of internal staffing changes. I would strongly caution other artists and vendors to ensure full payment upfront before working with this organization.

Due to the situation, she was released directly to Cogir. Priscila was really a rockstar, everything was taken care of. She busted her butt to get movers the next day, elevated care taking that night, and even arranged for my mom to stay in a guest suite while we worked on moving her stuff. Additionally she had diabetes and it required her to have daily injections of insulin, normally 3 times a day. I was my aunt's trustee and as I lived 500 miles away, and as she had no relatives locally she could rely upon, I looked for a residential home where she might get steady, reliable care. Yes, I spoke with the owner of the Emerald Isle homes and her assistant. My Aunt's needs were made very clear to them, including the needed insulin shots. Additionally, they received a current medial report on my Aunt. Regardless, after placing my Aunt , the owner refused to give required insulin shots to my Aunt. My 92 year old Aunt, who had been on daily doses of insulin for 30 years , was suddenly deprived of insulin. After 2 or 3 days, without insulin, I got a call from Hospice that they were going to give my Aunt the needed shots but that I had to find another home for her that would give the shots. So I did, and moved my Aunt out of that place within the same week. My Aunt never recovered from that blow to her system and she died at the new ( second) home within a week. I am of the firm opinion that the lack of insulin facilitated my Aunt's death. That owner was absolutely heartless to take my Aunt in and then refuse to give her insulin. There is no way I would have put my Aunt in that home,if I had known they were not going to give her the necessary insulin.

Her kindness and transparency immediately put me at ease. I also had the chance to meet Julius, the Executive Director, and he was equally amazing. My wife lives in the second-floor Haven - advanced Alzheimer's - community. We have yet to meet a staff member who is not competent and courteous and caring. My wife has reached the point where she has become wheelchair bound. The staff quickly assembled the chair I bought for her. There were difficulties in doing so, but they persisted instead of letting responsibility fall back on me. I greatly appreciate what they did. I am not the least bit mechanically inclined; I have trouble setting my watch. More importantly, they trained her in wheelchair use and safety, always patient, encouraging, and friendly. In my own case, I was recently informed that a room will become available in early April that will be substantially less expensive than the one I now occupy, and I will move into it then. My point is that the Kensington realizes how expensive memory care and assisted living can be and strives to ease the financial burden on its residents whenever the opportunity presents itself. I am also compelled to mention the first-class medical monitoring and care that followed my return to the Kensington after two weeks in the hospital recovering from colon cancer surgery. The Kensington's quality is self-evident. I regularly meet new residents whose families had originally placed them in a different local facility and then later decided to move them here. If you have a loved one who needs residential care, I cannot strongly enough recommend the Kensington. Gary Hartzell

If it does ever happen that one of us needs extended care, this place would be our top choice.

In the beginning,…read moreeverything was great when my mother first moved in, but over time we have noticed a significant decline in the level of care and attention being provided. There have been multiple occasions where my mother has been locked out of her room due to issues involving another wandering resident. Every time we visit, we are forced to locate a caregiver or med tech just to have her door unlocked. When these concerns were brought to management, we were met with little to no communication, resolution, or reassurance. What has been most upsetting is seeing my mother in visible discomfort and emotional distress. During one visit, she was nearly in tears from pain and discomfort, and when asked about how she was feeling, she began crying. I then attempted to ask the med tech, Irene, questions regarding my mother's medication and care, but she was unable to provide any answers and appeared disengaged throughout the interaction. It is extremely alarming to know that staff members responsible for residents' wellbeing cannot properly address basic concerns from family members. At this point, I am genuinely fearful for my mother's safety and overall wellbeing due to what appears to be a lack of properly trained and compassionate staff. The only times we consistently receive attentive care and professionalism are when staff members such as Dominque, Breana, Dejah, Lilie, Ms. Robin, and previously Vada are present. Unfortunately, I was informed that Vada no longer works there. Many of the other employees I have encountered seem uninterested, lacking compassion, and simply present to collect a paycheck rather than provide quality care to residents. My family and I are paying a substantial amount of our savings and income for my mother to live in a community where we expected her to be treated with dignity, care, and professionalism. Due to these ongoing concerns, I have seriously considered moving my mother out of the community altogether. I truly hope improvements are made soon, including stronger leadership and management, because residents and their families deserve much better.
