Unsafe…read more I moved my mother into the memory care wing of this facility just over a year ago and could not be more horrified by the conditions and lack of care that I witnessed. This includes multiple, documented incidents of: 1. bed bugs infestation 2. gross medication mismanagement (my mother was given a triple overdose of one medication, dispensed another resident's medication, and had her emergency inhaler destroyed without authorization) 3. residents left soiled and neglected 4. serious falls among various residents that resulted in broken hips for two of them 5. constant staff turnover and 6. increased dependence on poorly trained temp workers, etc. Given other glowing reviews, my comments may seem like an outlier. However, it is actually a reflection of the drastic decline of Merrill Gardens in the past 10 months. Despite repeated efforts by myself and other families to address these issues with management and several, separate, filed complaints to the Department of Social Services, leadership has failed to properly respond and course correct. As a result, we have been forced to remove our loved ones and place them elsewhere for their safety and well being. Given how Merrill Gardens treats its most vulnerable residents (those with severe dementia), I would highly discourage anyone from considering this facility; it not only demonstrates their lack of care and quality but also their lack of humanity.

She also answered all of my questions candidly, which I truly appreciate. She also brought in Lauren, the Resident Care Director, to provide a preliminary care estimate. Both were very patient and extremely kind, listening closely to my descriptions of my dad's care needs and preferences. I got a definite sense that I could trust Lauren to be accountable for my dad's physical well being based on her descriptions of protocols for the residents' care. The facility is lovely and spotless and is located in a beautiful, tree-lined area of Rolling Hills Estates. It has an upscale vibe, and the residents I observed appeared very happy to be there. The agreement, scope, and pricing were clearly discussed and approved in advance. Unfortunately, before final payment was completed, the Director who hired me was let go. Since then, new management has refused to honor the original agreement in full. Despite providing documentation, proof of approval, and fulfillment of the work exactly as requested, I was only partially paid and am still owed $1,400. It's disappointing to complete a high-level, time-intensive project in good faith--especially for a major event--and then have a company refuse to take responsibility for the commitments made by their own leadership. This isn't just about payment--it's about integrity. Vendors should be able to trust that businesses will honor their agreements, regardless of internal staffing changes. I would strongly caution other artists and vendors to ensure full payment upfront before working with this organization.

Our family feels fortunate that there was an opening available when our Dad needed a residency like this. The Emerald Isle caregivers are kind and professional. A lot of attention is focused on nutritious and tasty food and regular interaction with the residents. The Administrator for the facility, Jessica, spends as much time as necessary to make sure the resident and the family is pleased with the experience. Additionally she had diabetes and it required her to have daily injections of insulin, normally 3 times a day. I was my aunt's trustee and as I lived 500 miles away, and as she had no relatives locally she could rely upon, I looked for a residential home where she might get steady, reliable care. Yes, I spoke with the owner of the Emerald Isle homes and her assistant. My Aunt's needs were made very clear to them,including the needed insulin shots. Additionally, they received a current medial report on my Aunt. Regardless, after placing my Aunt , the owner refused to give required insulin shots to my Aunt. My 92 year old Aunt, who had been on daily doses of insulin for 30 years , was suddenly deprived of insulin. After 2 or 3 days, without insulin, I got a call from Hospice that they were going to give my Aunt the needed shots but that I had to find another home for her that would give the shots. So I did, and moved my Aunt out of that place within the same week. My Aunt never recovered from that blow to her system and she died at the new ( second) home within a week. I am of the firm opinion that the lack of insulin facilitated my Aunt's death. That owner was absolutely heartless to take my Aunt in and then refuse to give her insulin. There is no way I would have put my Aunt in that home,if I had known they were not going to give her the necessary insulin.

My wife lives in the second-floor Haven - advanced Alzheimer's - community. We have yet to meet a staff member who is not competent and courteous and caring. My wife has reached the point where she has become wheelchair bound. The staff quickly assembled the chair I bought for her. There were difficulties in doing so, but they persisted instead of letting responsibility fall back on me. I greatly appreciate what they did. I am not the least bit mechanically inclined; I have trouble setting my watch. More importantly, they trained her in wheelchair use and safety, always patient, encouraging, and friendly. In my own case, I was recently informed that a room will become available in early April that will be substantially less expensive than the one I now occupy, and I will move into it then. My point is that the Kensington realizes how expensive memory care and assisted living can be and strives to ease the financial burden on its residents whenever the opportunity presents itself. I am also compelled to mention the first-class medical monitoring and care that followed my return to the Kensington after two weeks in the hospital recovering from colon cancer surgery. The Kensington's quality is self-evident. I regularly meet new residents whose families had originally placed them in a different local facility and then later decided to move them here. She's able to sleep in and have her breakfast/brunch on her timeline. She reads, watches the Dodgers on tv and plays solitaire on her computer. Not everything is perfect, but no situation in life is. I find the care staff to be genuinely kind and thoughtful. They are led by an executive director who nurtures the kind of compassion and patience needed for an effective assisted living environment.
