Called last year 2023 to inquire about possible living quarters for my significant other. Mentioned his name, and got information from the pleasant person who answered the phone. In fact, she told me to call back on a Thursday, when there would be someone who could discuss with me the possibility of utilizing a special discount subsidy that could be applied, depending on my loved one's financial resources. However, when I appeared earlier this year, 2024, I was met with two upper-level directors who actually suggested that perhaps when I called last year, that I actually called a nearby apartment building named "Harbor Terrace" instead. I realized right away that I was being given the brush-off. The fact of the matter of is that these smiling ladies had no intention of assisting me with housing, be it assisted or independent living. At the end of the conversation before I left, the director went to her office and came back with a cute cookie lollipop and thanked me for visiting after telling me that most residents there have family members assisting them with their monthly rent expense. She was telling me something I already knew from years ago while checking into assisted and independent living arrangements in core Los Angeles. Overall, I am rating Harbor Terrace Assisted and Independent Living three (3) stars, and that's generous - - because I like the setup, know the neighborhood , and I know of people who live there because I see them in the neighborhood and talk with them. Without a doubt, I was given the brush-off when I appeared because I am a person of color.. and it was obvious that there was no desire to attract me or my loved as residents at Harbor Terrace. I visited the property looking for a place for my dad. Property is sparkling clean and I loved the entrance covered in a variety of plants and with a beautiful fountain. Staff greeted me right away, was friendly and warm. The lobby was very clean and smelled great- I was pleasantly surprised by the friendly birds in the lobby! Danee did a fantastic job showing me the property- I noticed how clean and organized everything was (elegant, warm and bright). She is very easy to talk to, informative and answered all my questions. It feels really good to visit a place where the staff has been there for so long and truly care for their residents (in some cases more than 20 and 30 years!). Overall, I really enjoyed visiting the property, talking to the staff and one of the residents (Vivian). They gave me cookies on my way out and they were delicious! I think this would be a wonderful place for my dad! read more

Have had my own parents there for a number of years: amenities: Many activities: Bridge, Group Crosswords and other games, 1st run movies, field trips, live music programs, transportation to shopping and doctor appts hotel style housekeeping, security, underground secure and covered parking, facility clean throughout regularly scheduled entertainment, music appr + participation, sing alongs, visiting instructors teach art, crafts, caligraphy, world history daily chair exercises, regularly scheduled assistance with mending community mtgs - input & discussion among residents pleasant gardens, courtyard, patio, flower arrangements & landscaping many meeting + family visiting areas are quiet and inviting hair and nails salon, snack room, library + public mobile library located very near Anderson Senior center and park long time devoted staff ( no changes in ~ 10 yrs ) including outstanding and enthusiastic program director. Everyone seems friendly, caring and helpful. chef Joan is outstanding at cooking, baking, confections 3 full meals w/ restaurant style service & snack room always open residents may have guests at meals in the dining room w/ advance notice many alternates available to published menu items parties w/ cocktails / wine on special occasions I only wish I could be at a place like this when it's my generation's turn. read more

Having had my Grandmother here for over 4 years. We both love Italy so we always hangout for some coffee in the "Portofino Room" we get nostalgic remembering our Italian cruises. My Grandma is always raving about Danee and other great people in Harbor Terrace. My Grandma is really social she enjoys socializing over all the activities and meals. My Grandma is a picky eater but she loves the food at Harbor terrace have joined her on a few occasions and have to say I was impressed. My Grandma floor is full of fun people. They have there lunch get to togethers chat go shopping. My Grandma loves shopping and Bingo. Thank you so much Harbor Terrace for taking Care of my Grandma. My mother moved to Harbor Terrace last Fall and really loves the staff. While she misses her home for obvious reasons (she lived there for over 33 years), she likes her studio apartment with a private bath and kitchenette. The room has a large window that is sunny and bright; new carpet, new paint, new mini-fridge and microwave too. It's pretty quiet as the soundproofing must be really good -- she has her TV on kinda loud sometimes but you would never know from the hallway!! There is a daily variety of activities like a cruise ship and you can pick and choose how social or anti-social you feel like. The meal menu changes everyday and if you don't like what is being served, there is about a dozen standard items always available that you can request. The staff does a fabulous job keeping any eye on my mom. They administer her medication so I know she is getting what she needs and her doctors are pleased with her health and the improvements in her test results since she has been there. When she doesn't come down for a meal, they call to check on her and remind her to come eat. My mom thinks they give her special attention even though they do it for all the residents!! I didn't have the heart to tell her the truth! The facility is clean and I did not detect any urine smell that one reviewer stated. I visit my mom at different times of the day/night and different days and have never seen anything that seems out of place or suspicious. The maintenance staff is also very friendly and say hello to me. I see them working doing something no matter what time of day I am there. The location is a bit mixed in SP but we have not experienced any problems. Precautions should be taken like any place -- just common sense. For whatever its worth, the police station is close by -- like a couple blocks. There is a variety of restaurants, a great coffee shop, hair salon, gym, mini-mart, etc within a short 5-10 minute walk. Ports O'Call is just a short hop away -- and I think there is a shuttle bus that goes down 7th. Plus on 1st Thursday is the Art Walk and all the restaurants and galleries are open, food trucks are out and there is a weekly Farmers Markets also a short walk away. For an active senior, these are great options as many other facilities do not have these options that you can walk to. I think the other thing I noticed was that the other residents seem happy and well cared for. When I pop in to visit or just drop something off at the front desk. I see how the residents act -- nobody is upset or demanding attention or being neglected -- they are in good spirits, comfortable and satisfied. I have experience with other facilities because of my mother-in-law and dad so I have seen how other places operate. There are many facilities in South Bay to choose from -- some costing much more, some less; some are newer buildings, some have better activities, some are smaller facilities, some large complexes, some of state of the art electronic monitoring systems, some have dementia care capabilities, etc -- my brother and I reviewed many different options and we chose Harbor Terrace as it was a great fit to our needs. We are very happy with Harbor Terrace as we know our mom is safe, well-fed, social, and treated with respect and affection by all the staff. read more

I moved my father here in September 2016 and he has come alive! While it is natural to think that our parents will be happiest at home it is not always the case. It can get lonely and without the daily interaction of others life becomes mundane, this was the case for my father. Now at Harbor Terrace Retirement Community his life is full again, he has made lots of friends and loves the food and entertainment. I love knowing that he is getting his medication daily (he sometimes forgot), nutritious meals, planned activities and he has his own apartment so that he can chill when he wants. The place is kept immaculate and he has housekeeping daily in his apartment. I can visit whenever I want (24/7) and he can come and go as he pleases. They keep an eye on him but he has his freedom. Four years ago, my mom was living alone in her house and falling every few weeks. I told her how my neighbors Tony and Jenny Trani had moved into Harbor Terrace and loved it. My mom wasn't interested and would always say that she'd get a caregiver when the time came, but would never move into assisted living. Then one day, she said "Maybe I wouldn't mind going down and looking at Harbor Terrace." The minute she walked into the courtyard entryway, she said "Oh, I really like this!" She had a tour of the entire facility with Director Danee Petrich and just loved everything about it, with her only requirement being that she wanted a one bedroom, rather than a studio. It just so happened a one bedroom was coming available in 3 weeks. Instantly, my mom said "I'll take it." She went home, called her realtor friend, put her house on the market, and sold it in one day. She just passed away last month and lived at Harbor Terrace for the past four years. She absolutely loved everything about it: the food, the friendly staff, having her room cleaned as if she lived in a hotel, getting her hair done by Amelia, the entertainment, playing bingo, playing cards, the monthly trips to local restaurants, and having limousine service to appointments and the grocery store/Trader Joe's/CVS/Rite Aid. Before moving to Harbor Terrace, my mom was all alone in her house just watching TV 24 hours a day. I can't thank Harbor Terrace enough for giving my mom back her life. read more

My mother moved into Harbor Terrace in August of 2015. It came highly recommended by several friends who had their grandmother and mother there. She could not be happier. Warm, friendly, attentive, and fun! Dad reluctantly agreed to try an assisted living situation after my sister and I insisted. Harbor Terrace, we were told, was more his speed with lots of optional activities and entertainment. We thought we would at least try since we weren't comfortable with him living alone anymore, yet he still wanted his independence. We expected dad to report back to us with everything wrong he could find, since he was so opposed to the idea. To our surprise, he acclimated very well and very quickly! When I called him shortly after he moved in, he rushed me off the phone because he didn't want to be late for the next social gathering. Everyone always greeted our dad with a smile, and they called him by name. The nurses there are wonderful - patient, caring, professional, and very knowledgeable. At Harbor Terrace, we have always felt that our dad was looked after by a staff that genuinely cared about him and not just for him. My mother lived at Harbor Terrace for five years and loved it. She chose it herself after she had volunteered with the library and brought books to the residents there. She loved the staff and the lively neighborhood. She could go to performances at the Warner Grand or to the Farmer's Market easily. The staff makes all the difference. Most of them have worked at HT for a long time and love what they do. They learn how residents like their food, for instance, and make sure that they enjoy what they are served. The housekeeping staff keeps an eye out for any problems. The front desk staff is so helpful and warm. We were all sad to move my mother but she needed a higher level of care. Otherwise, she would still be happily at Harbor Terrace. read more

I was looking for a place for my elderly mother to live, and I decided to look at Harbor Terrace after seeing an ad for it. Driving into that neighborhood in the middle of the projects in San Pedro made me realize that this was probably not a place where I would feel safe to leave her, but the inside of the building was an even worse experience. The hallways smelled of urine, the rooms were small with one tiny window, and the carpets had to be at least 10 years old. The woman who showed me around (Danny?) was the type who wouldn't stop talking and ignored my questions, which I found very rude. They offered me lunch, and after one bite I could not eat anymore of it--it was really bad. After looking at other retirement homes, I found so many in more desirable locations that were clean, much better equipped,and with much nicer atmospheres. Harbor Terrace is definitely at the bottom of my list. read more

My Mom moved into Harbor Terrace two years ago. We had toured and researched just about every senior housing complex in the area. It was a challenging time. I believe it was meant to be, that on my first tour to Harbor Terrace, I ran into an old friend, whos Mom was living there. She proceeded to give me a glowing review of HT, and detailed her research of facilities from the South Bay to San Diego. She was firm in her assessment, and without a doubt, told me that Harbor Terrace was at the top of her list. My Mom moved in a couple of months later. I have to say, that my friend was accurate in her assessment and descriptions. Harbor Terrace cares. The staff goes above and beyond to see that the residents are personally cared for and treated with respect. Pre-Covid, the activities, entertainment and outings were in abundance. Now, even with Covid, HT finds ways to entertain the residents and bring joy. I can't say enough about how well they have handled this challenging time. They have followed Covid protocol without fail. To put it in perspective, my Mom still has her pre-Harbor Terrace residence. At the onset of Covid, I could have taken her back to her home at any time. I chose to ride it out, because I felt she was safe, and the alternative was to be back in her home all alone, with a just a caregiver (or me) for company and entertainment. At Harbor Terrace, there is always someone with a smile and a greeting. They have been going the extra mile to see that we all get through this crazy time, in the best way possible. I am happy with the decisions my Mom and I have made, and would also be happy to discuss further. read more

Beautiful place, very well maintained. Staff is very attentive and residents are mostly nice. I love the fact they have nice front court yard with trees and plants everywhere. Harbor Terrace is an excellent facility that I would highly recommend to anyone looking for assisted living. Managers Danee and David are very professional and helpful with all of the ins and outs of moving a loved one to an assisted living environment. My mother lived there for 3 years (before requiring hospice care) and blossomed in her new surroundings. Every day they provided delicious sit-down meals served at her regular table along with exercise classes after breakfast and many other activities throughout the week (i.e. pet visits, music and singing, bingo, movies). I can honestly say that one of the first things I noticed about Harbor Terrace is that I always felt a warm welcome and was consistently greeted by happy and friendly staff whenever I visited, which I think says a lot about Harbor Terrace. read more

Well, I have spent the last three weeks getting my Mother moved comfortably into Harbor Terrace, and this review is long overdue. I am "Momma's Boy", the only child, so making Mom happy, and more importantly safe, is my only and number one concern. For the past few weeks I have nearly lived at Harbor Terrace to make sure everything was going "just right". Yes, I might be a bit obsessive over Mom's well-being, but every good Italian Son is, right? Anyway, during this time I feel as much a part of the Harbor Terrace "family" as I know the residents to be (I know because I interacted with many of them prior to make sure they were happy campers!). I've also interacted with all of the staff extensively, from the directors, to the ladies who watch over Mom's medications, to the gals at the front desk, and right down to the maintenance and kitchen staff, and I can tell you without a doubt that everyone at Harbor Terrace "Cares"! Isn't that what caregiving is all about? It takes certain type of people, nearly saints, to be caregivers. I looked long and very hard all around the South Bay before I found Harbor Terrace, interestingly enough sent there by another facility just up the street in Rancho Palos Verdes that had not come close to meeting my "rigorous standards". In looking at the address I realized this to be the area of Old Town San Pedro, near the harbor, that had been going under a revitalization for the past several years, with old factory spaces being updated to beautiful working and living Lofts, and cute shops. When I first pulled up to the front entrance and walked into the beautiful lobby I just knew this was "The Place", my long and stressful quest had ended. I had looked from the very high end retirement communities, reserved obviously for the very Rich and Famous, to places I would not wish on anyone, and Harbor Terrace gave us Champagne taste on a craft beer budget. Like one other reviewer said, it's like being on a Cruise Ship that is in anchored somewhere off the coast of Italy. Elegant Tuscan flair adorns all of the common facilities, including an incredible outdoor garden, dining room (China, proper silverware, and cloth napkins, very important), entertainment areas, right down to the on-site beauty salon, which was a requirement for Mom. Ha! Harbor Terrace is not a corporately owned chain, nor government supported retirement community. It is solely owned by a private holding that has only one other facility. They make it their business to focus all of their time, efforts, and resources on their facilities, and it shows. The people at Harbor Terrace did everything to make my Mom feel welcome, including a bunch of her "special requests" for little room updates and such. When Mom moves into a place, even a small studio, when she is done with it you can submit the photos to Better Homes and Gardens, and the staff has done everything to accommodate her, no questions asked! So all-in-all, so far, so great. Mom is a very happy camper, and she is not an easy one to please! Mz. Anti-Social is already making tons of new friends, and I haven't seen her smile like this in a very long time. I visit her regularly, and Harbor Terrace is always gracious enough to allow me to dine with her, and let me tell you, I am a pretty picky Foodie, and the meals here are made with quality products, well thought out for proper dietary needs of the residents, and just downright tasty! Really, there just isn't much of anything you can say bad about Harbor Terrace, and if you don't believe it, just go take a quick look for yourself, talk to the residents, interact with the staff. I can't say enough about the Harbor Terrace Retirement Community. I was able to move my mother in and knowing that she'd be taken care of. I describe it as a "cruise ship that doesn't move." They provide social activities, outings, and a pleasant dining room. They handled all of her medication for her, ordered refills, did the laundry, and provided her a cleanm safe place to live. I was able to go on with my life knowing that my mother was in good hands with kind, caring people to look after her. They allowed her to keep her dignity at a time she needed help. read more

Harbor Terrace is a wonderful caring environment where seniors can thrive. Lots of activities to join in, along with librarys, vids, music and entertainment. The staff are skilled, helpful, positive, knowledgeable and understanding. And they are constantly vigilant for any problems that may arise and highly communicative. My mom lives there and it wasnt an easy transition for her moving. But now she really loves her new home along with all its benefits. A couple of years after Dad moved in with us after Mom died, Dad said that it was getting so hard to get up and down the stairs in our home that he thought he would have to move out soon. The first place we looked was Harbor Terrace. We all liked the homey atmosphere there and how we saw the staff interact with the residents. Dad said that as far as he was concerned he didn't have to look further - another place couldn't be any better; it could only cost more money. I told him for our peace of mind we'd check out a couple more places. After we did, we concluded Harbor Terrace was the best. What a wise decision. Dad lived there happily for over seven years until he recently passed away at 91. He was beloved by the wonderful management team that has been there from when Harbor Terrace first opened. The exceptional wait staff and housekeeping staff have been there for many years, and now some of their children are starting to work there. In a field that normally has frequent turnover, that means the staff must be treated well and in turn they treat the residents well. We want to thank all the staff for the loving care they gave Dad and for making Harbor Terrace a special home for him. read more

My 97 year old mother has been at Harbor Terrace for the past year and a half, where she has gone from assisted living services now to a full time care provider. She is so happy there and I am happy that I placed her there. The administration and staff are so friendly, helpful and patient with her. It's like living with a group of friends. They treat her like a family member. There are numerous activities that she can participate in to stay awake and active. She is seldom in her room. Did I say how patient they are with her? Our 97 year old mother recently passed away; before that she lived for about a year at the Harbor Terrace in San Pedro. My sisters, my brother, and our respective spouses visited her several times a week, and so became very familiar with the establishment and the staff. I have to say, when I first read their information sheet, I was a bit skeptical, but we found the claims to be absolutely true. Everyone pays the basic rent. Then they pay extra fees for other types of help if they need it, so every tenant has a custom package. Mother needed help with showers, dressing, and sanitary issues because of balance and physical problems. Her reasoning abilitywas still quite good but her short term memory was poor, so they made sure she took her pills and brushed her teeth too. The Harbor Terrace cost a good deal less for the same type of care than the last place she had lived, and level of care she received was much better. They have eighty some residents and forty some people on the staff. Most of the people have worked there for many years; several since the place was built, and they all treated Mom like she was a member of their own families. I rate them 5 stars!!! This is in response to Ms. Petrich's comments. I certainly have no anger toward Harbor Terrace, and the fact is after many hospitalizations I had to go back there because I was in no shape to move anywhere else. Now that I've found the beautiful Villa one mile away in Rancho Palos Verdes which is a thousand dollars a month cheaper , I couldn't be happier. The rooms are larger, the bathrooms beautifully tiled and much newer, and I have a balcony overlooking the entire LA harbor. I lay in my lounge chair every night on my large balcony, try and count the many stars, and off in the distance watch the planes line up to descend into LAX. It is secluded high above Western Avenue, so I no longer have to look down from a window on a parking lot filled with homeless people and police cars. There are two public bathrooms on each floor which alleviates the constant problem at Harbor Terrace of guests having to use one solo bathroom on the first floor. The food is delicious here, the level of clientele much much more elegant, and the best part is, they actually use two-ply toilet paper here! It is a shame Ms. Petrich felt the need to go on the defensive so quickly.... this is a place for people to rate their experiences without management feeling the need to chime in. I am so grateful to have found such a more beautiful place to live, and only wished to relate my own feelings about Harbor Terrace. read more
