Unsafe…read more I moved my mother into the memory care wing of this facility just over a year ago and could not be more horrified by the conditions and lack of care that I witnessed. This includes multiple, documented incidents of: 1. bed bugs infestation 2. gross medication mismanagement (my mother was given a triple overdose of one medication, dispensed another resident's medication, and had her emergency inhaler destroyed without authorization) 3. residents left soiled and neglected 4. serious falls among various residents that resulted in broken hips for two of them 5. constant staff turnover and 6. increased dependence on poorly trained temp workers, etc. Given other glowing reviews, my comments may seem like an outlier. However, it is actually a reflection of the drastic decline of Merrill Gardens in the past 10 months. Despite repeated efforts by myself and other families to address these issues with management and several, separate, filed complaints to the Department of Social Services, leadership has failed to properly respond and course correct. As a result, we have been forced to remove our loved ones and place them elsewhere for their safety and well being. Given how Merrill Gardens treats its most vulnerable residents (those with severe dementia), I would highly discourage anyone from considering this facility; it not only demonstrates their lack of care and quality but also their lack of humanity.

When I arrived, she was welcoming and had such a positive energy. She showed me the entire facility, including a couple of available room options. She also answered all of my questions candidly, which I truly appreciate. She also brought in Lauren, the Resident Care Director, to provide a preliminary care estimate. Both were very patient and extremely kind, listening closely to my descriptions of my dad's care needs and preferences. I got a definite sense that I could trust Lauren to be accountable for my dad's physical well being based on her descriptions of protocols for the residents' care. The facility is lovely and spotless and is located in a beautiful, tree-lined area of Rolling Hills Estates. It has an upscale vibe, and the residents I observed appeared very happy to be there. It is definitely well worth checking out for your loved one!

My wife lives in the second-floor Haven - advanced Alzheimer's - community. We have yet to meet a staff member who is not competent and courteous and caring. My wife has reached the point where she has become wheelchair bound. The staff quickly assembled the chair I bought for her. There were difficulties in doing so, but they persisted instead of letting responsibility fall back on me. I greatly appreciate what they did. I am not the least bit mechanically inclined; I have trouble setting my watch. More importantly, they trained her in wheelchair use and safety, always patient, encouraging, and friendly. In my own case, I was recently informed that a room will become available in early April that will be substantially less expensive than the one I now occupy, and I will move into it then. My point is that the Kensington realizes how expensive memory care and assisted living can be and strives to ease the financial burden on its residents whenever the opportunity presents itself. I am also compelled to mention the first-class medical monitoring and care that followed my return to the Kensington after two weeks in the hospital recovering from colon cancer surgery. The Kensington's quality is self-evident. I regularly meet new residents whose families had originally placed them in a different local facility and then later decided to move them here. Despite providing documentation, proof of approval, and fulfillment of the work exactly as requested, I was only partially paid and am still owed $1,400. It's disappointing to complete a high-level, time-intensive project in good faith--especially for a major event--and then have a company refuse to take responsibility for the commitments made by their own leadership. This isn't just about payment--it's about integrity. Vendors should be able to trust that businesses will honor their agreements, regardless of internal staffing changes. I would strongly caution other artists and vendors to ensure full payment upfront before working with this organization.

They do not take the care of their residents lightly, and have never once taken a "shortcut" when it comes to healthcare concerns. They are extremely competent, which is vital for providing appropriate medical care and responding to health needs. 5. Social worker support: Having a dedicated social worker on staff is incredibly beneficial (Cheryl is a rockstar and truly cares!). She has assisted us with navigating resources, providing emotional support to our family, and helped us with the adjustments of community living. Her expertise has made the transition smoother and less stressful. 6. Friendly atmosphere: We are always met with welcoming and friendly staff members. I found a place like that for my mom. I had initially located it in 2021 when I was looking for a place for my step-dad, but it didn't work out for him. Just after the holidays this year, when my mom was getting ready to be discharged from a rehab facility, I went back to check on availability. Gregg, the owner, went out of his way and met my mom in the rehab, and took the time to talk to her and get to know her. I really appreciated that. When mom got there, she was greeted by Chelsea and Jimmy, who are the lead care takers there. Chelsea and Jimmy met her with so much care and warmth, that mom instantly felt at home. She got along with all of the other ladies there, and the had meals together and watch TV and, and we would go for walks in the evenings. Jimmy, whom my mom took to calling "Greenie" (I think because of his eye color?) would make meals for them. My mom loved it there, and she felt safe and cared for. Gregg coordinated closely with hospice when the time came, and was there to ease the transition when she passed. I hope you never have to be in a position to put a loved one into a board and care, but if you do, I pray that it is a place like this one.
