After a picturesque drive down 88 and a short distance off the exit we arrived at The Carrot Barn. There was plenty of parking. The inside is so adorable, it's a mixture of grocery store, retail store and dinner all in one. They have a really nice selection of local food and other goods. We were hungry so we headed straight to the back to the food counter. The menu is not overwhelming and has so many great lunch options. We decided to split the chicken salad sandwich, tuna wrap and clam chowder. I will be going back very soon to have the chicken salad and clam chowder! The chicken salad is chunky on delicious bread. The clam chowder is a thin broth with chunks of potato and clams, it may be the best chowder iv had. The backed goods case was calling my name and the store clerk recommended the carrot chocolate chip cookie, it was fluffy and delicious. On the way out we picked up a bag of carrots that we roasted at home. 11 out of 10 recommend this place. read more

Our favorite place for apple cider donuts, and are quite said when they stop making them from Memorial Day to Labor Day- when it's too hot. They are light, crispy and just the right sugar. They have wonderful baked goods and excellent produce! They also have beautiful plants they grow in the summer and fall, and currently have wreaths, Christmas trees and Christmas balls! There is a market inside with home goods gifts produce fridges with cheeses ans sauces and freezers with cuts of meat. Don't pass on dessert. We shared a cider donut and lemon blueberry cheesecake. I also had a cup of spicy red chili and the crossaint apple and turkey sammy. The cranberry Mayo is divine. Kudos to the staff as she recommended the croissant and cheesecake! Love this place, but the bakery is going downhill - sadly. Specifically the cookies and brownies. Nothing is fresh anymore. The cookies crumble in your hand. Sizing is no longer consistent. I hate to have to write this, but every time we stop, we hope for the best and our hopes get dashed again. It is almost as if they are baked then frozen and thawed when needed. I should take a picture of my dried out fudge brownie with the old look to the chocolate of the brownie and flaking all over. Nothing is moist anymore. my mom and I were looking for a day trip from Saratoga Springs and I had read about this area. It was about 40-45 minutes away and a pretty fall drive. This spot is a barn that sells fresh produce and other grocery items that also has a bakery and cafe. The apple cider donuts were terrific and super popular. We stopped for a donut, then went to do some sightseeing, and came back for lunch.... along with everyone else. I was shocked by how crowded it was. Luckily, the line moved along and we didn't have to wait extra long for our food. We were also able to get a table. The food was worth the wait! My mom got the turkey apple salad and I got the sandwich version. Both tasted fresh and had a good balance of ingredients. The menu had enough of a variety that I think most people could find something they enjoyed. Definitely a place I'd return and I want to try some of the desserts like the donut bread pudding when I do. So nice to find a local place with quality food to support! read more

As part of our desire to try cider doughnuts in new locations, we thought a nice sunny Fall day called out for a drive to the Carrot Barn since their doughnuts were rated the highest on a recent "4th annual tour de donut" conducted by the FUSSYlittleBLOG. These donuts are very good and I would have no problem recommending them. They had a good crust on the outside and a goodly amount of sugar. There was an ample amount of apple flavor along with other spices that were reminiscent of pumpkin pie. The texture was not too heavy but was more cake-like. There was no taste of oil. Overall, good enough that I ate two in the car before we left. The Carrot Barn has much, much more than just donuts. There are plenty of vegetables and fruit grown in the Schoharie Valley. We picked up some sweet potatoes that look nothing like what you find in the big grocery stores. We haven't tried them yet, but I'm looking forward to doing that. This is a very nicely run local farm business and we love to patronize. I have given up on buying pre-potted plants and instead grow my own from seed, because I keep getting PLASTIC pots which crack easily and then often can't be recycled. I was SO happy to see that I could treat myself to a mum because they did NOT use a plastic pot. It is a beautiful mum. I have also enjoyed really delicious sandwiches here in the past. I really love this place. You can shop for produce, plants, flowers, but also have a nice lunch, latte, and absolutely delicious sweets. Only drawback is staff being a little cold and clipped (maybe they're just busy all the time) and just be sure you're buying local. It it's not in season or has a sticker like a local market, ask! Super place to go for lunch. Would love to see a salad with feta, nuts, and berries! Their house dressing is divine and the small piece of fresh bread is a nice little extra, but it IS really small. Yep...those cider donuts were truly good, lacking only the oily film left in your mouth after eating these sweet morsels. These were great. The home accessories were morbidly overpriced, but added to the country farm atmosphere. There were quite a few non-local products here, from Maine actually. More high-priced fluff. With plenty of locally produced similar stuff that's available in this great area, steer clear of these...go local. The produce was abundant...apples, pumpkins, leafy greens, cauliflower, potatoes, all for sale. We filled our basket, and topped it off with pressed apple cider to sip warm that night. We stopped here on a whim after visiting the Native American museum and what a surprise and delight! Huge selection of Stonewall Kitchen jams, sauces and lotions, plus their lotions and soaps. The veggie selection was vast and varied, we bought a lot of items here. The cafe looked amazing with the fancy desserts, meats, soups, coffee. I was impressed to hear that "The Carrot Barn" is a throwback to when the farm supplied carrots to baby food producer Beechnut. Beechnut eventually left the area so Schoharie Farms had to change and diversify to stay afloat. I would say they've done a marvelous job, and this market can be a destination on its own, but couple it with the caves and the Iroquois Indian Museum and you have a whole afternoon. Glad we stopped; this place lives up to the hype. read more
