Came here for the first time today. Wait staff was friendly and took our drink order in a timely manner. It then took over 20 minutes to get our drinks, during which time we decided the warm temperature in the building was probably too much for us to stay for food. After hearing about this thing called a boardgame cafe I had to check it out. I got the Castle hot chocolate latte, with cinnamon and cayenne pepper. It was awesome. The Buffalo Chx panini hit the spot. Then we played a couple games of Codenames with a lovely couple from out of town. We combined our groups while both pairs were deciding on a game. Really cool concept, but it costs $5 per person to play, which I thought was overpriced. We went during lunch on a weekday, so this would only be worth it if you went on a weekend intending to spend more than an hour there. So, we ended up just getting food. I got a buffalo chicken panini; it was flavorful but not amazing. Maybe I'll come back another day when I have more time. They do have an extensive selection. The management was friendly. read more

The Castle is an absolute staple of life in Beverly. Good food and drink and a wide variety of board games; it's the only one of its kind for many miles in any direction. Pre-COVID they would host events like standup nights, trivia nights, and drag nights (not sure if that is going to resume soon?), and they're super LGBTQ+ friendly and super nerdy. Completely by chance we happened about this gem of a place and I'm glad we did! When we entered, a very friendly and helpful person gave us the run down, took our drink order and off the kids went to look at the wall of games. They have games for all ages and for $5 per person, you can play as long as you'd like. We ordered some apps - chips and salsa (good), loaded waffle fries (meh) and pretzel bites (excellent) and settled in for our first game of Life. Then we ordered dinner - veggie panini (ok), 2 build your own pbj' s for the kids (good) and a loaded burger (good). Then our next board game. Then dessert - gelato, brownies and home made cookies with a cup of chai. All very good. Somehow 3 hours passes by and we laughed every minute of it. The food was ok, the atmosphere fun, the crowd pleasant and the games fun. Ample free parking in the back. Staff was good. Good music. Comfortable environment. Good selection of wines, coffees, teas and snacks. Next time, I would go for the games and snacks/desserts and not for a full meal. We had a great time and will definitely go back! read more

Very enjoyable change of pace. No one rushes you and you are worried about time when you are here. It is fun hearing the screams and laughter of the other patrons while playing their game and knowing they are enjoying themselves. The food is good and the wait staff was friendly and attentive when needed. They gave us plenty of time to sit down and enjoy ourselves with a couple of games before they came over to take our order. Great family night out where the electronics stay put away. Also, we were able to try new games we don't have at home to see if we like it. Yes, finding the parking lot is a bit challenging and my family did not believe me when I told them the small alley next to The Castle was they quick easy way to go and went the long way around the block. Gluten Free fun for the whole family! First, this place has a ton of games for all ages. We were a group of 1 adult and 3 teens ages 12 to 15. We found 3 different games we enjoyed and had some belly busting laugher when we played Fun Employed (with the not so kid appropriate cards removed.) We also met another dad and son who taught us to play Ticket to Ride. The Castle also offers snacks and sandwiches. We started with cinnamon popcorn for $5 but with unlimited refills. I think we had at least 5 bowls! Everyone in our group ordered a panini. These come with chips and a variety of filings, cheese of course. They also have sweet paninis. They offer all of their sandwiches on Udi's Gluten Free bread and have a panini press just for GF orders. We had one order of nutella with banana panini on gluten free bread. They also offer an assortment of nonalcoholic drinks. It cost $5 per person to play. read more

My friends and I are all avid board gamers. Each with a collection that rivals that of the Castles yet we keep coming here for game night on a weekly basis, and often more frequently than just that. Could we meet somewhere else? Absolutely. Would we still have as much fun playing games? Sure. So why do we keep coming back? We come back because the owner and the staff. Everyone is super friendly and attentive. I have been to many game stores that host board game nights; some that charged a higher cover for admission. At these places, the staff often view you as more of a pain than a customer. You never get this feeling at the Castle. I can't say enough nice things about everyone that works here. The staff all seem to love what they do and you will be hard pressed not to feel more than welcomed. If you need a suggestion of what to play just asked them. If you need help with a rule or rules THEY WILL HELP YOU! They are trying to show people that there is more out there than just monopoly and clue and I tip my hat to them. The food is mostly sandwiches and they are all wonderful with new items added frequently. They offer great gluten free alternatives. The menu is very kid approved such that a picky eater will find something and enjoy. Beer and drinks are all well priced and the selection changes periodically. The 5-dollar admission is reasonable. The cost of a board game ranges between 20-70 dollars. This is a great way to test games. It does get loud here sometimes as you often you will find a group or two playing a party game. Today I arrived at the Castle with car trouble. After coming to an abrupt stop on the highway my front right tire was very low and I feared that it had popped. I mentioned this to the owners and they sprung into action. Kevin, the co-owner, took a look at my tire, then went to his car and got a jack. He then proceeded to CHANGE MY TIRE, completely free of charge. He also then gave me the address of a mechanic he knew and gave me directions on how to get there. The concept of a game cafe is cool, and $5 entrance isn't bad. The selection of games is quite large, and they rate the games based on level of difficulty. A drawback though, was it was quite loud in the room we were in and I felt like it may have been more enjoyable to have friends over to our own house to play some games. At times, it was hard for us to hear each other talk. They have a small menu of coffees, sodas, paninis, and desserts. We did order the popcorn (free refills) for $4, which was tasty- buttery and salty. I had to visit the Castle twice to get my fill on a weekend trip to Beverly. I knew it was going to be awesome from the start, and then it exceeded my expectations. I had a sweet and delicious Nutella latte, as well as pretzel bites (I died and came back to life and ordered them again the next day... that good). This place is awesome. what a cool concept to serve 'noms and drinks with unlimited board games. I went with the bf to try out just the food, and everything tasted fresh and delicious. It was empty on a Sunday afternoon but it was nice to sit by the window and have the place mostly to ourselves. Free refills on fountain drinks and hot coffee. we ordered the chicken caprese sandwich with honey mustard instead of pesto, and the chicken bacon ranch panini. very affordable. The breadsticks appetizer with all pepper jack and no mozzarella had beautiful, smoky flavor. I also ordered the banangram which would've tasted better as a crepe rather than panini. Next time I go, I'll pay the $5 per person to play the boardgames and $5 for unlimited popcorn! They have basic games like childhood Pretty, Pretty Princess (which brought a tear to my eyes) as well as super geeky role playing games. I'd expect a place like this to be in hip Davis square, not in boring Beverly, but I'm so glad we have something like this in the boring suburbs now! I did expect the floors and booth to be a little cleaner seeing as how slow it was. A good wipedown and sweep would have picked up the popcorn lying on the ground. This is a new go to place for me! Great for dates, great for a family game night, or a bunch of friends. There are so many games, all the classics, educational games, new games... anything in between. Trivial pursuit with a whole table of friends or two friends playing risk for 5 hours you still only pay $5! They have a small food menu featuring Paninis. Also Gelato and cookies and popcorn (remind them easy on the butter). The last time I was there they told me they were getting a liquor license soon for Craft beers etc which sounds like a great addition. Because, like myself, you won't be able to find the parking it is behind the back of the building. A little tricky to find. I can't wait to go back with different groups/dates. Staff was too laid back: - No one came to take our dirty dishes after we were done eating so we placed them on another table ourselves so we could play a game. - Waiter did not return after serving us to ask if we wanted more to eat or drink. - I had to get up and go to the bar to ask for a check. 3.) There is one unisex bathroom. It was dirty when we were there (in need of a deep clean). I had a small child with me and the toilet was so dirty I didn't want her sitting on it. read more

We love going to The Castle! The owners are super nice and always checking in with people, making sure everything is good to go. The selection of board games is outstanding! From 2 player easy games to 10+ person in depth games, there's something for everyone here. The food is amazing as well! It's a café so don't expect some 3-4 course gourmet meal, they mainly do snacks sandwiches and their sandwiches as my co-worker has said more than ones are, "on point!" meaning they're amazing! They'll even doctor up the food anyway you want it, you just have to ask. The coffee is great too! What I also really really like about this place is there's no alcohol served, no loud music or "bar" feel to it. It's not a coffee shop/internet café either, you don't see 15 hipsters hanging out with their apple laptops being smug and too cool, everyone is there, having a great time. They do a Looking For Group (LFG) night where anyone can go and just meet someone new and hang out and play board games. We've met random people there and had a great time doing it! New Years was a blast meeting new people, playing new games. I strongly recommend at a minimum checking The Castle out. it's great for families, great to go just kill some time, meet new people and just have a good time in general. read more

We walk in, okay atmosphere. Then my mood was really soured when I found out that each person in your party had to pay $5 to play the board games, corrupt. Very medieval vibe going on, I should have picked up on this theme because of the name "the castle", but I was blissfully unaware until setting foot in this establishment. I was surrounded by guys who looked like they smelled bad and a group who shit talked us when we grabbed the crazy cat lady board game. How about say it to my face and not behind my back with one of the most atrocious lisps I've ever heard. Side note, this group of grown adults had been here for 4 HOURS playing the same board game. I can assure you that if I had knocked over a card, messed up the board, etc. that I would have been thrown out and then blacklisted immediately. If this doesn't give you an idea of the crowd I have no idea what will. Service was very subpar and the people seemed like they had never worked in customer service before. Board games all seemed uninteresting and lots were missing pieces. Only good thing was the food but idk cause my friend said her meal was bad. Lastly the parking was a nightmare and we had to reverse all the way back out the alley. Best part of my night was leaving. If you weren't bullied in high school, don't come here.
