I'm slipping in my old age! How have I not left a review about how GREAT Jan is!? A couple of years ago, my daughter went out of the country for a week. Usually, I'd have family check in on our fuzzy baby but that family member has moved outta NY. I'd never left a baby with anyone else before, much less for an extended period of time. Came on Yelp, compared some reviews. Corresponded with a couple of places. I got the absolutel BEST vibes from Jan. I had a ton of questions and she patiently answered all of them. We are SO lucky to have an Aunt Jan for our little kitten. During this past Thanksgiving holiday, we had to board our 5 month old kitten (much to our chagrin) while we were traveling cross country. However, we couldn't have had better care, with a cooler person, or with any more attention. Jan took our little one on as her own and sent updates daily and was readily available to answer any question we had. She truly saved our butts. Jan is The. Best. I found a postcard for The Cat's Pajamas in my favorite local bakery, but had never used a professional pet sitting service before so was a little weary. However, with the amount I travel for work I had to give it a shot. I sent Jan an email and heard back from her instantly. She offers boarding or home visits for fantastic prices. I chose home visits and she asked to come to the apartment to meet my cats and walk through everything together. She took copious notes while I showed her around, asked great questions, and put my mind at ease. I have used Jan many times, sometimes with extremely short notice, and she has always come through for me. I feel completely safe & secure leaving my cats at home when Jan is coming. Jan is the awesomest. I found her on the internet almost 10 years ago, and she took care of my three cats until I moved away. She is absolutely trustworthy and very knowledgeable about animals, and she really truly loves them all! She is responsible and has a great passion for providing the best treatment she can. Jan is great with our cats. We've been using her as our sitter almost as long as we've lived in Astoria/LIC. When Jan takes care of the cats while we are away they don't hate us when we come home. Where do I start? I have been a customer of Jan's for approximately 8 years now. I found Jan through an Internet search when my oldest cat, Pebbles, was diagnosed with Diabetes just before I had to leave for a vacation. He was 9 years old and needed two shots a day and the thought of having to leave him with my vet, in a cage for the 8 days I would be away, was tearing me apart. As I read Jan's website I knew this person was an angel to all animals...felines in particular! I called her and even with such short notice, she took Pebbles in. She was, and continues to be, very accommodating. When I saw her "hotel" I fell in love with the whole concept. My cat would have his own room (not enclosed, but partitioned) for 8 days. Her "hotel" is so animal friendly, immaculately clean, warm in the winter and cool in the summer. She takes her business VERY seriously. Finding her was a dream come true for me! She took care of Pebbles for 7 years until he passed away in August of 2009, but she continued to hotel Pebbles' younger brother Bam Bam for us. This has to be the most important part of our story...I was in Greece in September 2009 celebrating my 20 year anniversary with my husband and Bam Bam was with Jan when she called to say she did not like the way he was acting. Very intuitive of her because up until then, he was a perfectly healthy cat!! After many calls back and forth to Greece, two different vets (because she was not satisfied with the first one she took him to), and many many tears, she had to tell me, over the phone, that Bam Bam was terminal and that she would try to keep him comfortable and alive until I got home. I had about 4 days left of my once in a lifetime vacation with my husband and wanted to run home so bad, but we were with another couple and I would have ruined EVERYONE'S vacation. It was a nightmarish situation for me and my husband, to say the least. But, Jan visited Bam Bam in the hospital every day, am and pm, and called me with updates. She diligently worked with my vet, her vet and the hospital to ensure that Bam Bam's diagnosis was correct and that he was getting what he needed to keep him comfortable, all while taking care of her other clients and making all of her other house visits!! She was with my big boy during the most crucial time in his 15 years of life...his last week. It was the biggest gift I ever received knowing that she was with him when I couldn't be. It was the only comfort I had. Because of Jan I was able to make the best of the rest of my vacation and I mourned from afar with constant tears and sleepless nights, but she assured me that Bam Bam was fine and happy and not in pain and really looked forward to her visits...she said "you wouldn't even know he was sick". The vision she gave me of him being happy and pain-free helped me cope. On top of all of this, I asked her to make the decision that I would have had to make if I were there...when to say "it's over". And, she was willing to make the decision to end his suffering if she had to...for me, so I could have my "once in a lifetime trip". You can't put a price on that kind of trust and loyalty. But, she and the hospital were able to get Bam Bam through the next 4 days until I got home. Bam Bam was EVERYTHING she said he was...he was bright-eyed and happy and vocal to see us...you would have never known he only had 1 1/2 days left before his deep warm purr ceased. The biggest gift Jan gave to me was that I was able to come home and have that precious last day and a half with my big boy...a gift I am SO grateful for. In the end, she was as crushed as I was over the sudden loss of Bam Bam. And, here's the kicker, she REFUSED to accept payment for the two weeks we were away because she said "I didn't really board him...he was in the hospital the whole time!!" LOL WHAT?!?!?! Where do you find that kind of heart in the business world these days??? Needless to say, I made a donation to her business so she could buy new kitty condos and beds. I now have a new little one, Jeter, and he spent his first "vacation" with Aunt Jan this past summer and he had a ball. Needless to say I was a MESS leaving him but I KNEW he would be in the best of hands, and I knew that from first-hand experience. I HAVE, and will continue, to trust Jan with my new furry baby...and you should too. She is kind, thoughtful, smart, compassionate, and an absolute champion for our furry friends. read more

My cat has been a guest at Jan's for many years. I love to travel but feel much less guilty about leaving when Elliot is at The Cat's Pajamas. Jan is a real animal lover and treats Elliot like her own. The hotel is great, no cages, big windows. Also, Elliot is diabetic and Jan can handle shots, pills, etc with no problem. Jan is very flexible about drop offs/pick ups which is very much appreciated when I'm juggling work, travel, car service, public transportation. She's the greatest. read more

Jan looked after our two young cats when we went on vacation for 10days. She stopped in for a visit before we left and took the time to write down instructions, including their favorite hiding places. She was also happy to tidy up around them while we were away - we have one seriously messing eater. She spent time with them so they didn't get bored and was patient enough to let the shy one come to her. When I dropped her an email to check in, she sent me a lovely email and photos to prove they were fine! We found a flyer for The Cat's Pajamas shortly before our vacation and decided we'd give it a shot. Two words: GREAT DECISION!!!! Our 15 year old cat is very finicky and needs daily meds and Jan was absolutely incredible with her. She came for a pre-visit to introduce herself to our girl Farley and left a shirt behind so she could get used to her scent. While we were away Jan sent us regular pics of her daily visits and reported back to us how things were going. It was so great to be able to keep our old girl in her own environment while we were gone and when we got back Farley wasn't even mad at us like she normally would be after a long trip. By all means, if you need a responsible, dependable sitter for your cat, Jan's the way to go. She knows exactly what to do, how to do it and you won't need to worry about a thing. Its clear from the moment you meet her she is truly a cat lover and will not let even the most obsessive, ridiculous cat owners (us) down. 5 stars!!! read more
