Our youngest son got married in Bend, 7 years ago, and I'm doing an event in Redmond, so we decided to stay here and also, we're doing a pilgrimage on St. Francis' 800th Anniversary. Staying right across the street from the church, this was an easy decision! While we never actually sat down for a meal here, we did have a couple of take out orders. The first was a hamburger for dinner. The burger was delicious once I got back to our room to eat it. It was an extremely busy Friday night and I was warned that there would be quite a wait. Actually, it was only a half hour. Customer service was excellent. The second was a Denver Omelette and hash browned potatoes that we shared for breakfast the next morning. It was a delicious meal. Again, service was excellent. I even declined an offer to have the meal delivered to our room Negatives: 1. There was no fridge or microwave in the room. I was awaken about 4:00am, I thought my husband was taking a shower, I felt him, so I know it wasn't him. It must have been a loud fan! 2. We couldn't look outside the windows, we have our drapes closed all of our stay, the outside seats for the restaurant were right outside, and it can get noisy during Happy Hour. 3. The sink is too small, none of the glass shelves are fit for my Waterpik. Positives: 1. The pillows were perfect. The TV channels were right on my show. 2. The temperature of the room was good, no drafts. 3. The night light also goes on, when all the lights are off. That's a bonus, because we always forget to bring our night light. 4. I love the colors, decor, ceiling fan light of the room. 5. In the morning, Fresh coffee was available on a table right outside our door. If I wasn't reading on the back of their menu, I would not have known or heard about their St. Francis Turkish style bath. If we have more time in the day & night, we could have done some tours around the building in and out. There's always a next time! read more

My cousin told me about this place, and so I decided to have dinner here. She did not do me wrong..... The ambience is amazing. It's in an old school, and they did a wonderful job of just making the place Absolutely beautiful. They have a full bar, with lots of beers and craft cocktails. I retired from drinking a long time ago, so I just had a soda. My server was Cassie, and she was very friendly and helpful...... I was there at 5 PM on a Tuesday, and they were already very busy. They can get extremely busy, so patience is definitely a virtue here. I decided to go with the jR's jumbo deluxe burger. Bacon, cheddar, and a fried egg. The burger also comes with. lettuce, tomato, red onion, pickles & secret sauce. Instead of french fries, I asked for the Cajun tots. The food comes, and dear lord, that burger was big. I almost had to unhinge my jaw to eat it. I asked for the burger, medium, and that's how it came. Just the right amount of pink. The burger was a good quality, burger, tender, and with the good quality, bacon and cheese, it was rich. The veggies provided a nice "pop" of freshness, that cut the richness a bit. It was an amazing burger. The egg was done perfectly, with that beautiful yolk, just oozing down into the burger. I had asked if the Cajun tots were spicy, and told, "not really." They were delicious, but they were a bit spicy. Toward the top end of what I care for in spice. They came with a very nice peppercorn ranch that helped cut the spice. I wasn't going to have dessert, until I saw the "mystery dessert" on the menu. Intrigued, I asked Cassie what it was, and she said it was a peanut butter hopscotch pie. OK... how could I turn that down??? I put my order in. As I mentioned, the place was very busy, and 15 minutes later I still didn't have my dessert. I needed to get going, so At that point, I just asked them to take it off my meal. They not only took it off my check, they gave me a slice in a to go box anyway. That was very nice. They didn't have to do that The peanut butter and chocolate played very well together, the peanut butter was creamy, I loved the little "crunchies on top", and it also came with a chocolate syrup to drizzle over the pie. We were staying the night at McMenamins in Bend while traveling from California to Washington, and one of the highlights of our stay was hunting down the speakeasy bar, The Broom Closet. Half the fun is searching the property for it--and don't worry, I won't spoil where we found it! Once inside, it truly felt like a hidden gem. The space is cozy and intimate, with comfortable places to sit and a full bar that feels tucked away from the rest of the property. It was especially festive during the holidays, with Christmas drink specials adding to the charm. I ordered the NA Merry Cherry, which was gingery, slightly spicy, and super refreshing--a great non-alcoholic option. My wife had The Countess and said it was absolutely delicious. We also had dinner in the main restaurant, and the service was fantastic. We sat at the bar, and the bartender was friendly, attentive, and made us feel welcome right away. For food, I had the Jamaican rice bowl with added blackened chicken, which was flavorful and very satisfying. My wife ordered the gluten-free BBQ chicken pizza and absolutely loved it. It is genuinely hard to find good gluten-free pizza, and this one really delivered. I also enjoyed trying a few beers, which paired nicely with the meal. We finished things off with cheesecake for dessert, and it was the perfect ending. Great food, excellent service, and a relaxed, enjoyable atmosphere. We ended the night by soaking in the soaking pool. What a fantastic stay! We plan to drive to Washington in July and are already planning to stay at McMenamins again. Definitely recommend! read more

While visiting Oregon we decided to grab lunch at McMenamins Old St. Francis School, which also had a restaurant on the property where we ate. I had the steamed clams and the flavor and herbs and butter made the broth very good. My daughter enjoyed the sandwich which she enjoyed very much and the a Point of French fries was a lot and it was tasty and crispy. The clam chowder was delicious and the sandwich was also enjoyed. They have their own parking lot and the whole place is keep with the way it was form the building and inside, even the men restroom had old antique pieces. read more

McMenamins is quirky and fun, trying to find the broom closet "speakeasy" type bar requires lots of twists and turns throughout the halls. Secret rooms where you can sign your name in chalk and see neon art installations make the journey all the more fun. Once inside, it's a really cozy ski chalet vibe with two bartenders making yummy cocktails. My chai cocktail tasted just like a chai, with an alcoholic twist, so tasty. The creativity is woven through every element of the bar, including little handwritten notes hidden in the ceiling of the seating nook. So fun and so different I had a great time! read more

At that point we cancelled our order and left, the only bright spot was that she was nice about that part. Amazing ambiance in a historic part of downtown Bend. Unfortunately, that's where the positives end. It took nearly 90 minutes for our food to arrive, and when it did, it was cold. We had to send the pizzas back, which added another 45 minutes before they returned. A steak ordered medium came out rare, and while some at the table thought the burgers were good, I didn't share that opinion. The biggest disappointment was the menu availability. At least five items were unavailable, including fish and chips, which was the primary reason we chose this restaurant. With a 6:00 pm reservation, running out of core menu items felt unacceptable. Great setting, but poor execution, long waits, and limited menu availability made for a frustrating experience. read more

Great experience at a fun location! Food: 4/5. To start we had pretzel sticks and the Cajun tots. Both were pretty good. We also had an elk burger, cheese pizza (for the kids), and the Thai-dyed bento bowl. Everything was amazing although a little more expensive compared to similar places. We left very full and happy! Atmosphere: 5/5. This location is beautiful and very unique. I loved the decor and the vibe. The only critique I have is that the workers were wearing Hawaiian shirts, which I felt different fit the vibe of the restaurant. Service: 5/5. Such a funky and cool boutique hotel located within walking distance of downtown Bend! This hotel was recommended to us by a friend and I am thoroughly glad we decided to stay there on our weekend getaway to Bend. From start to finish all of the staff were extremely friendly and helpful with recommendations. It is a bit pricey, but has such a unique charm to it and is within walking distance of all of the major restaurants, breweries, and shopping of downtown Bend. Our room was located in the art building which also houses the hidden speakeasy. The soaking pool was a highlight of our trip and we thoroughly enjoyed spending time there in the evening. There is a brewery on site as well as a movie theater and a whiskey and cigar lounge. If you are looking for a funky, cool place to stay in Bend, I would recommend checking out the old Saint Francis. read more

Not sure what was up with the kitchen today. It took nearly 40 minutes to get our food. We came around 1 pm on a Saturday. While we waited 25 minutes to be seated, the dining room wasn't too crowded. We ordered eggs Benedict and the eggs were basically hard boiled. The kids burger didn't come as ordered and was hard as a rock and the fries were cold. tldr; if you're into the McMenamins experience, go for it. If not, avoid. After spending 20 mins finding parking, dragging our suitcases to the front desk, got a mediocre welcome, checked in. The front desk took our card, gave us a map showing where the room was, and acknowledged, ya parking sucks here we have a tiny lot. At no point were we told about any amenities or the 'oddities' one might find. So we drag suitcases down a long dark hallway, thru the parking lot, thru a patio/bar, then to our building, into a super dark hallway and staircase and finally our room. Room was ok. Coffee pot with some creamer/sugar. TV. Microwave. Larger than usual mini-fridge. Lots of above average pillows on the bed. Stiff as a board bed (you know, "room and board"). The bedroom clock had USB charging ports. Bathroom average. Couple of scratchy robes to use if you want. Nice artwork. On this early summer weekend, Bend was cold, and the room heaters took an astonishingly long time to warm the place (like 3 hours). Turned out our room overlooked the patio/bar that got very busy and noisy in the evening, so earplugs were thoughtfully provided. Since we were in town for a wedding, this hotel wasnt for us. When we planned our trip this year, this was one of the first things we added to our must-visits and were thankful we did. It ended up being maybe the highlight of the entire trip, and made me a fan of wanting to try other McMenamins locations in the future. For those who don't know, McMenamins is an older brewery that buys old properties for conversion into inns for travelers or places where people can expect a consistent quality each with its own touch. This location in Downtown Bend used to be a Catholic School with many buildings, so it fit them perfectly. All the old exteriors look the same, with a mix of changed indoor décor but with an older vibe. It was cozy, every part of it we went to. The real draw for us was the heated indoor pool; it's $10 per person for an hour, locker rooms are provided and kept clean, bring your own towel. The pool was amazing, with old tile, fountain, open air ceiling I heard is amazing when it snows, and the freedom to bring your own drinks in to enjoy while you soak. It's for relaxing and talking, not swimming. They also have a theatre for live performances and movies. The main section is the restaurant, with booths and bar seating a like. Downstairs under the bar is the brewery, a smaller set up but producing beers for on-site consumption. They also have beers on tap from other McMenamins locations. At the back (and where you pay to use the pool) is the hotel check in desk - they also have rooms you can stay in, which I'm sure is fun. On our visit after the heat of the pool, and being a sunny cool day, we opted to sit outside in the sunshine near a fire pit. Their tater tots are famous, so we got a big plate of those, plus hummus platter, and other foods. I had a flight of beers, trying one raspberry that was celebrating its birthday that day but wasn't my favorite. As far as beer goes, their stuff is average but not bad; but you really aren't coming here just for the beer anyway. It's also part of the Bend Ale Trail, code is near the lobby desk. Simply, if you're visiting Bend, this is a must stop for anyone; have a meal, have a soak, have a drink. read more

I stayed here for six nights (March 2026.) The room was great, as was the staff. I had Breakfasts, a brunch and some dinners there and they were all quite delicious. Also, the ambiance of the room and the walls was amazing. Absolutely beautiful property. Also, avoiding elevated pricing for holiday/weekend nights, it was competitive with a normal hotel that doesn't have any of the nice stuff. This is a very old building that now houses a wonderful bar and restaurant where I enjoyed sitting outside in the garden area having a nice cold cider on a warm afternoon. I will go ahead and say that it would have been a 4/5 if we had good service. We were there at the end of June and this was our first stop from Portland on the way to Sunriver. We were all hungry and wanting to relax and get into vacation mode. We sat for a LONG time waiting for everything, which would not have been big deal if they were actually busy. Overall, there were two employees there who seemed to want to be there at all. One guy was SUPER nice and walked us in because I couldn't figure out how to get inside from the courtyard we ended up at after our Passport hunt. The hostess was also nice. Our server seemed uninterested. I used to be a server and had I been the one to pay the bill, instead of my husband, I would have left a few dollars. Maybe 10%. It was JUST THAT bad. read more

Cool place with nice outdoor seating area. We didn't really know where to go to be seated for the outdoor bar (which was confusing and a little frustrating) so we ended up sitting outside and being served by the restaurant staff I believe. Which was fine, but we weren't there for food. However we did get some Cajun tits which are always good. My wife and I both ordered the "Island Time Margarita". A nice blanco tequila with pineapple juice, fresh lime and plum infused rimming salt. It was refreshing and amazing. Our waiter was also very nice. A nice guy who had previously worked up at the Raleigh Hills location by where we are from. 8/10 the waiter was great, drink was great, menu looks better than our local McMenamins up here. The hotel is cool with lots of arts (paintings and sculptures) and history. The parking on the property is not super challenging to find. We got the parking spot almost everyday we were there (Thursday to Monday). The only day we could not find available spot in the property was Sunday but luckily Sunday street parking was not enforced. The three buildings for the rooms to stay are uniquely interesting. We got the room with two bath tubs in the main building that also has reception and the pub. The room is huge and the bathroom is the same size as the bed/living room. The complementary morning coffee and tea is nice and conveniently located in each building. We walked around the other two buildings, art and education, in the morning and found all secret rooms. The paintings and stories on the wall are wonderful and interesting. The soaking pool is really beautiful at night. The movie theater has wonderful art pieces and sculptures. There are many places to drink and eat within the property but mostly open after 3 pm. They (including downtown Bend restaurants/bars) are so busy on Friday night but we could not hear anything when we were in our room. The location is conveniently located at the end of downtown. We were able to walk to all coffee shops and restaurants throughout the day. It is not far from Deschutes river walk and we enjoy walking along the river. read more
