We were staying the night at McMenamins in Bend while traveling from California to Washington, and one of the highlights of our stay was hunting down the speakeasy bar, The Broom Closet. Half the fun is searching the property for it--and don't worry, I won't spoil where we found it! Once inside, it truly felt like a hidden gem. The space is cozy and intimate, with comfortable places to sit and a full bar that feels tucked away from the rest of the property. It was especially festive during the holidays, with Christmas drink specials adding to the charm. I ordered the NA Merry Cherry, which was gingery, slightly spicy, and super refreshing--a great non-alcoholic option. My wife had The Countess and said it was absolutely delicious. We also had dinner in the main restaurant, and the service was fantastic. We sat at the bar, and the bartender was friendly, attentive, and made us feel welcome right away. For food, I had the Jamaican rice bowl with added blackened chicken, which was flavorful and very satisfying. My wife ordered the gluten-free BBQ chicken pizza and absolutely loved it. It is genuinely hard to find good gluten-free pizza, and this one really delivered. I also enjoyed trying a few beers, which paired nicely with the meal. We finished things off with cheesecake for dessert, and it was the perfect ending. Great food, excellent service, and a relaxed, enjoyable atmosphere. We ended the night by soaking in the soaking pool. What a fantastic stay! We plan to drive to Washington in July and are already planning to stay at McMenamins again. Definitely recommend!

While visiting Oregon we decided to grab lunch at McMenamins Old St. Francis School, which also had a restaurant on the property where we ate. I had the steamed clams and the flavor and herbs and butter made the broth very good. My daughter enjoyed the sandwich which she enjoyed very much and the a Point of French fries was a lot and it was tasty and crispy. The clam chowder was delicious and the sandwich was also enjoyed. They have their own parking lot and the whole place is keep with the way it was form the building and inside, even the men restroom had old antique pieces.

McMenamins is quirky and fun, trying to find the broom closet "speakeasy" type bar requires lots of twists and turns throughout the halls. Secret rooms where you can sign your name in chalk and see neon art installations make the journey all the more fun. Once inside, it's a really cozy ski chalet vibe with two bartenders making yummy cocktails. My chai cocktail tasted just like a chai, with an alcoholic twist, so tasty. The creativity is woven through every element of the bar, including little handwritten notes hidden in the ceiling of the seating nook. So fun and so different I had a great time!

First off, I love the vibe, the walkabout, seeing new things, but I was at Kennedy school a couple nights ago and the menu is the same, basically. That was disappointing, but I get it. Go with what works. Secondly, goddamn! Those fire pits are massive! It's awesome! Thirdly, MJ. I wish yall didn't close so late, because I would have met you for a drink after!

Very cool hotel with unique and fun entertainment sprinkled all over. I personally loved the broom closet, the bar and the outside area. A very quirky speakeasy that you should visit if you're in Bend.

Amazing ambiance in a historic part of downtown Bend. Unfortunately, that's where the positives end. It took nearly 90 minutes for our food to arrive, and when it did, it was cold. We had to send the pizzas back, which added another 45 minutes before they returned. A steak ordered medium came out rare, and while some at the table thought the burgers were good, I didn't share that opinion. The biggest disappointment was the menu availability. At least five items were unavailable, including fish and chips, which was the primary reason we chose this restaurant. With a 6:00 pm reservation, running out of core menu items felt unacceptable. Great setting, but poor execution, long waits, and limited menu availability made for a frustrating experience.

Great experience at a fun location! Food: 4/5. To start we had pretzel sticks and the Cajun tots. Both were pretty good. We also had an elk burger, cheese pizza (for the kids), and the Thai-dyed bento bowl. Everything was amazing although a little more expensive compared to similar places. We left very full and happy! Atmosphere: 5/5. This location is beautiful and very unique. I loved the decor and the vibe. The only critique I have is that the workers were wearing Hawaiian shirts, which I felt different fit the vibe of the restaurant. Service: 5/5. We were seated right away and had an excellent server named Johnny. Our food and drinks came in a reasonable amount of time. Kid friendly: 4/5. They have a good kids menu, highchairs, and were very accommodating with our kids. We saw a handful of other kids there as well. Such a fun experience for our trip to Bend. Definitely recommend to go at least once!

Great outside seating areas for sitting around fires, sm0king cigars, and sipping on unique cocktails. Witch's Brew is a normal cocktail with yum flavors. El Diablo cocktail brings the heat with the hot peppers; a cold drink that will heat you up. McMenamins has a lot of footprint, about 2 blocks worth. I would come back for the outside patio area. And sheer uniqueness of the property.

Enjoyed a wonderful room in Art House, with a large balcony/patio off both the bedroom and living room overlooking a courtyard. Room featured a kitchenette with mini fridge, microwave, plenty of glassware (coffee cups, pint and wine glasses) plates and silverware, paper towels and cleaning supplies. Front desk staff and bar staff were friendly and happy to be of service.

We checked out McMenamins Old St. Francis School in Bend, and while the food and cocktails were fine--nothing bad, nothing mind-blowing--the real reason to visit is the weird, wonderful, and slightly mysterious atmosphere. This place is like Hogwarts for beer lovers--a historic school turned into a hotel, pub, brewery, movie theater, and even a soaking pool (because why not?). The best part? Finding all the hidden rooms and secret passageways tucked away throughout the property. We wandered around like treasure hunters, pushing on random walls and hoping we wouldn't accidentally end up in someone's hotel room. The movie theater looked super cozy, and while we didn't stay overnight, we're tempted just for the experience of sleeping in what was probably once a very serious nun's office. Final verdict? Go for the adventure, stay for the atmosphere, and if you're hungry--temper your expectations. McMenamins is all about the quirky experience, and on that front, it absolutely delivers.

Food is pricey, service was kind but slow for a mid day visit. Truffle fries were delicious, black garlic aioli was too rich. Pretzels and cheese are good! They offer happy hour on Sundays which is nice.

Had such a great dinner. Everything was perfect from the seared ahi, Cajun tater tots, truffle fries, sliders, salads and loved my pear sidecar. What a delicious time! The service was fabulous. Super helpful. I always love the style of the McMenamins. So whimsical and unique.

Great view of the river, well spaced out seating. Lots of picnic tables for big groups. Where it turned was the very unfriendly bar staff and honestly the inedible food. She then said is that it? In a very annoyed manner. Not is that all for now? Or even somewhat attempting to be friendly. It caught me so off guard! I took a second to glance around behind the bar and the entire energy was like they were annoyed at having to do their job. Ewww She then turned the screen to tap my card (it's getting offensive to ask for a 15-25% tip for pouring 2 beers or making a coffee- I'm a nurse and I don't get tipped every time I answer a call light) so I hit costume tip, added a $1 and I swear she looked up and mean mugged me. My husband went back up later to order burgers (I sure wasn't going!lol) and we shared the wagyu bacon burger and I literally could not take more than 2 bites because it was soooo salty. And this is 2 beers in, my palate was probably dulling). Like someone literally accidentally spilled the entire salt jar on the burger. The owners closed up shop downtown and created this new place on 2nd Street in Bend's Central District. It's now called Dogwood at the Pine Shed. Why Yelp won't create a new, distinct page for the Pine Shed is beyond me. That said, the Pine Shed is a fine place for drinks and food truck fare. The open, spacious 'shed' has plenty of varied seating surrounding a nice bar with quite a few tables outside on the patio. Mobility-challenged folks have choices too. For those worried about 2nd Street's reputation for sketchiness, don't be. Revitalization efforts by the city have transformed the area. At times of good weather, with the big doors open, the Pine Shed is quite a nice spot to relax. Cocktails were the raison d'etre for the former incarnation of Dogwood and that emphasis transfers here to the Pine Shed. I particularly like their versions of a margarita but the other cocktails are uniformly good too. The beer tap offerings are not so spectacular, however, with only four (and a cider). On one visit shortly after they opened for business, two beer taps were tapped out, which can be chalked up to growing pains. In any case, the Pine Shed can't be seriously regarded as a tap house in the style of the many others in Bend (On Tap, River's Place, Crosscut, The Lot, The Podski, Midtown Yacht Club, etc.). Come for the cocktails. They do offer low ABV and zero ABV drinks. At present, the food truck choices are abundant and pretty decent. Being trucks/carts, and thus mobile and prone to relocating themselves, I'll not list them here. Best to check the Pine Shed's webpage for current offerings and then go to the relevant Yelp page for reviews. Parking is street only, no parking lot. The city has completed construction on 2nd Street so there are more spots available than before.

I started eating at The Drake in their first week of business and had many, many, many meals there over the years but things change and so, it seems, has the popularity of The Drake. Now the good news. The new owners are a trio and one of them is also one of the owners of the inestimable Ken's Artisan Pizza in Portland that opened its' Bend location last year. (Go! Even if you have to stand in line for 45 minutes like I did.) The first news of this ownership change was that they would keep the name and current focus of The Drake. The opening for the new place is currently said to be Memorial Day weekend. I don't live in Bend anymore but there is still a family home there and so I visit on occasion and knowing a "Ken's" owner is involved in the new enterprise may make me brave the wicked-bad downtown parking to try this new place.
