This was my go to place when I was attending at VT. I find the gyro is the best and I always compare other gyros when I traveled to this one. I'm shocked to see the place still opens. I remember fondly of the owner here when he corrected me how to pronounce Gyro correctly. Anyway, the place is mostly the same as I remember back in the 80s. The Gyro still tastes the same. My first visit to Virginia Tech and my buddy said we had to try this small Greek joint for lunch. Classic college restaurant with about 10 tables and 10 counter seats. Pitas, sandwiches and humus . A simple menu but the quality is there. Roasted red pepper hummus and warm fluffy pita to start. Delicious flavor. Gyro and curly fries. Real potato and the meat had great flavor. There are a lot of spots to choose from near the VA Tech campus. Souvlaki popped up on the Downtown Blacksburg website and had tasty reviews on Yelp. I wanted something cheap, quick and satisfactory, and this his the spot. Our crew had the gyro plate, a gyro pita sandwich, a chicken kebab and a side order of curly fries. Each item came out piping hot. So for those of you with kids, be sure to hold them back until the food cools! The gyro meat was thick and succulent. The pita was so soft and flavorful. This was probably the best pita I have had to date. The kebab and gyro plate came with a generous side of sauce, which was as good as the rest of the meal. The curly fries provided the least excitement, but my toddler will be satisfied with any fry. We hopped in right before the lunch rush began, but I noticed nobody had to wait more than 5-7 minutes for their completed meals. read more

It's pretty good, but not the best Greek food in the area. The prices are great, and it's a neat little place! But I don't go here that often because it doesn't really satisfy my craving if I want Greek food. They're very fast and they have a lot of options, but sometimes it feels like they don't give you a lot of "bang for your buck," in the sense that you will often find a lot of filler in your meal (probably how they keep their prices relatively low). Souvlaki is my favorite Greek restaurant in the area and maybe of all time. I have been going for over 7 years now and the staff has never been anything but kind, friendly and prompt with any and all help. They have cheap drinks, plenty of seating (indoor and outdoor) and are a fantastic local establishment. We ordered the Marinated Chicken Pita Wrap and Gyro. There was very little meat and it was completely filled with lettuce. The lettuce was old and brown and my son and daughter both complain of stomach pain since eating it. The tomatoes tasted rotten as well. Nothing we ate tasted fresh. My daughter even found a long brown hair in her wrap (our hair is black). We ordered humus on the side and they gave me some red sauce instead. We frequently eat Mediterranean food and have never had such an unpleasant experience before today. I usually do not leave poor reviews but we were so disappointed that I had to leave this review. Great spot in Blacksburg, where good Greek food is hard to come by. Their prices are extremely reasonable - I spent under $10 for a gryo with a side of curly fries. And their portions aren't small either! The gyro was plenty for a meal, and completely delicious. The pita is soft and warm, meat is well seasoned and tender, and the sauce is absolute perfection. We ordered a chicken kabob, 2 gyros and a curly fries. The Chicken kabob was one skinny skewer of chicken served with a piece of pita and yogurt sauce. That was it! Nothing else. Gyros were tasteless. Meat was pre-slices and soaked in a liquid of some sort and reheated in an oven. Size doesn't matter as long as it is satisfying but these 5-inch long gyros have neither size nor flavor. I really don't like to give super low rating but I'm being very generous here with one-star rating. There is no excuse for food to be this bad. I was in town on business and got a hankering for some Greek food. I stop by this place at about 430 in the afternoon and it was empty. I ordered the Greek salad and the falafel wrap and told the waitress no tomatoes on anything. She goes and gets a premade salad and removes the tomatoes. I have no other words to describe the salad other than it sucked. It was the skimpiest salad I can possibly describe containing only two olives , two cucumber slices, one green pepper sliced, one red pepper slice, one pepperoncini , and a few onions. They call it the classic Greek salad but it was far from classic . Now for the final kicker on the classic Greek salad , the dressing I am certain was Kraft creamy Italian. And now for my review of the falafel wrap , I have eaten falafel all over the world . So I may be somewhat biased , but falafel is relatively easy to cook. You make some falafel mix in a bowl , you drop it in a hot fryer and you take it out in a couple minutes . This is how they made falafel at souvlaki when I was there . They had some falafel that was already made sitting out on the counter and they dropped it back in the fryer again. The falafel was dry, brittle, and kind of tough. The Gyro bread came out of the steamer and was kind of wet like it'd been in there too long . The waitress put tomatoes on my Gyro even though I told her I didn't want tomatoes on anything . I will say the cucumber sauce did taste pretty good, but not good enough to get me to go back to that train wreck of an establishment again! read more

This place hasn't changed since I first came here over ten years ago. And thats a good thing, I hope it never does. The food is cheap, and simply delicious. The meats have been perfectly marinated and seasoned, and you would be hard pressed to find a better gyro somewhere. The sandwiches and subs have a great yogurt sauce- your chain sandwich shops can't come close. This place has all the atmosphere of a hole in the wall, because thats exactly what it is. Give me great food in a dump any day over bad food in a nice setting. As for the service- the sign says "you can't complain about our service because this isn't any." But seriously, I've always found everyone here to be extremely friendly, and never had a complaint about any service. read more

It's great for a quick bite or late night snack, and everyone who works there is super nice even when there's a ton of people coming in right before they close. Plus, the food arrives very quickly! The curly fries are great and their marinated chicken wrap is simple, but very good. The chicken can be dry at times so I'd recommend asking for a side of that yummy cucumber sauce. Souvlaki has been around since I was in school in the late 80s and hasn't changed since then, either. (That's not necessarily a bad thing!) Their prices are incredibly low and the great food makes us want to return when we are in town for football weekends. Their falafel wraps are tastier than Pita Vera's (previously called More Than Coffee), and I love the softness of their thick, warm pitas. My hubby always gets the gyro wrap, a staple since college. Souvlaki is a small place and can get quite crowded during peak hours, but service is super fast and friendly (even though the sign says it's not, LOL). Ordered online and went to pick it up, eagerly looking forward to Mediterranean, which has been my lifelong comfort food. I've had it on both coasts and several locations between, and I can honestly say that was the absolute worst gyro plate I have ever had. I don't know if they cut it off a proper spit, or if it came frozen pre-sliced (more likely), but it had zero flavor to it. No pepper, no spice, no bite - nothing. It was lukewarm, bland, had no surfacing (even a little sear would have been something) and the texture was rubber. But wait, my story gets better. Set aside the meat, and we move on to the flatbread. I say flatbread, because pita has FLAVOR. Whatever this spongy mess was, it was NOT pita bread, and if it is supplied to them as such, they need to get a new supplier. Nothing had been properly heated, so the flatbread was also cold. The feta was cheap and also rubbery, vs. the moist crumble that feta should have. I've had better hummus from a gas station (it was lumpy and separating) and the cucumber yogurt sauce (they don't call it Tzatziki in the menu) was average at best. The one thing I can say in the positive, and this is where the one star came from, is the tiropita, which was lovely. Light, flaky, and well flavored. I understand that everyone has supply issues right now, but if you're going to be doing this, you really need to step up your game. Hopefully it's just an off day? read more
