Such a great spot in this college town. Met up with my husband's old roommate from their time at Tech and enjoyed a nice meal and beers together as we chatted. Mike had been here years ago, by since then they did remodel the inside. Defend the stairs and your taken into a cellar turned into a bar/restaurant. The menu has options for everyone's palate and the beer options are plenty. I chose the Greek Spaghetti and a Kentucky Bourbon Barrel Ale The Greek Spaghetti really was a huge portion! I made about 3-4 meals out of it. I added grilled chicken to my dish for protein. Inside this dish is olives, feta, Greek spices of oregano, red peppers, onions,green peppers and a few others that I can't recall but this really was an addictive dish! I couldn't stop myself, but knew I had too, as I had that bourbon Ale to enjoy along with my meal. The bartender was not only serving people sitting at the bar but also the tables around it. She was on a roll watching her zip through the people serving up ice cold beer and piping hot food. The atmosphere is casual and the lighting is dim. I love The Cellar. The food is good. The bar tenders and wait staff are really great people. The atmosphere is low-key. The beer store has a great selection. Plus, this place is an important part of Blacksburg history. We had our work happy hour here for several years. Frequently, people would ask us to have more variety in venues, to try holding it somewhere else. We did try several other places, but had to keep coming back to The Cellar. This was largely because the bartender was so great, but also the atmosphere and the food. What dishes are the best here? I like all of their pizzas, chicken parmesan sandwich, greek salad, hummus platter, spinach and artichoke dip, pasta Aegean, meatball sub, cellar burger, and French dip sandwich. They have several vegetarian options, and have been very accomodating when my vegan friend asks for special adaptations of menu items. My two favorite things to order: Bacon & cheese fries and chicken kabobs, but you can't really go wrong with anything on their menu. One of my favorite places in Blacksburg, the Cellar is a cozy establishment and a great place to grab dinner and drinks downtown. The Cellar is very lowkey and casual, with an extensive menu offering Greek-American food options. They have a pretty decent selection of gluten-free options, and they can substitute any of their subs with their delicious gluten-free bread. The spinach and artichoke dip is the best I have ever had! If you're visiting while Virginia Tech is in session, beware long waits and limited seating. The Cellar is always a VT/Blacksburg favorite for all students and locals. That means that you can probably expect The Cellar to be packed on the weekends/major events. If you plan to come here, plan accordingly so you don't have to wait! I've been here plenty of times and each time I always find myself feeling "squeezed". The restaurant itself really small and their isn't much personal space. That doesn't really effect the food quality but it's something worth noting if you're claustrophobic. The restaurant is self-seated, so if it's really packed, then you're probably gonna have to stand somewhere and until a table opens up. Let's talk about FOOD. Order the curly fries to start out! They're always a safe bet and they're really easy to share with a group. From the multiple times I've been here, I would recommend getting the Pasta Aegean or the Prime Rib French Dip. TIP: If you go during their lunch special, they give you a 6 inch sub with a soup of choice for a reasonable price, which is a pretty good deal in my opinion. The portions are generous and the food quality is pretty good. The cellar is one of my most favorite restaurants in this town. Not only I like their food, but I also order cases of beer from the Beer store. Mike is the man to go to when you want to get some advice on beer or order cases of beer. He is courteous and respectful, always. Today I called the cellar to order several cases of beer. Someone else answered the phone. So, I asked if Mike was there. The man with a very rude tone of voice said no, he is not here. I said when is he going to be there? He answers, "I am not going to tell you, especially to a STRANGE MAN on the phone! ... ... ... Is this for real? First of all, I did not ask "WHERE" he was, or where does he live! I asked when is he going to be there! Second, even if I did ask where he was! Indeed, there are myriads of ways that this man could reply to my inquiry, and not sound light-minded, and disrespectful. So, he got what he deserved as the result, in verbal protest. A well-deserved reply for an ignorant and lightminded statement. I just don't understand how someone who also claimed to be a "manager", (Richard) in a restaurant setting, during such difficult times due to pandemic, would behave in such a manner. I thought managers are supposed to be catalysts for resolving matters of concern in restaurants! And certainly, not supposed to play an ignitatory role! Oh Well! At last: Dear Cellar, for all the hard work that you do, ... you certainly do not deserve this review! In addition, Blacksburg is a college town, and you are a local mom and pop restaurant, and not a large corporation. My buddy and I love eating at The Cellar whenever he comes to visit. They have a great beer selection, and the food has always been delicious. From the pizzas to the enormous-sized calzones, I've never left hungry. Usually, I have enough left over for another meal. it's a popular place to eat in Blacksburg, so it stays busy. They've added more outside dining, so people can enjoy the wonderful food. I loved the atmosphere; it's underground and cooler (temperature-wise), and it wasn't crawling with undergrads like the restaurant next door. The service was great; we had the chillest waitress ever. The only fault was the quality/taste of the food. My roommate and I ordered calamari to start. It was a lil' mushy with no seasoning (I love salt and pepper with calamari), and the sauce had that chemical-y taste to it. I excitedly ordered the crab ravioli alfredo, but I was unfortunately imagining lump crab. It was ground-up crab (so, not great texture), and it overall had a sour/salty taste. In general, I feel like it was probably the kind of ravioli you buy from the frozen section of the grocery store and just heat up (which I guess is my fault for not expecting that). This is a classic Blacksburg go-to and a nostalgic restaurant for my family and I! I love how they have added/expanded the outdoor patio area because Blacksburg often has perfect weather in the spring for eating outside. This is my favorite restaurant in NRV. The food is always fresh and well-prepared. I often order the salmon which comes with a nice salad and grilled vegetables. Upon ordering take out, we discovered a quarter size piece of mold on the bun of a "Mad Greek" sub. (This is in addition to an overall stale taste of the chips alongside it) We called the restaurant to give an official complaint to the manager but was told that the manager was not available at the moment. The take-out employee was apologetic on behalf of the restaurant and offered to make things right by giving a gift certificate. We declined this offer as we are hesitant to dine from there again. We reiterated that proper inspection is necessary within a food establishment and the line cook or assembly worker should be reprimanded and perhaps retrained. I think this might be the lone holdout of restaurants from back when I lived here 20 years ago. Back then it was one of the "fancier" places to eat in town and not one that a collage student could afford very often. It was wonderful to go here last night with the family and see that so little had changed. They of course now have gluten free pizza crusts but their regular pizza crust seems just the same as it was 20 years ago - soft and chewy but light at the same time. We had a starter of mussels that I was initially skeptical of my husband ordering but how wrong I was, they were fantastic! The broth was so good we had to get a second load of bread for it and still dipped our pizza crust in it! We also had the kids spaghetti and marinara, gyro pizza, the meat lasagna, baklava, Tiromisu and the brownie. Everything was very good. I also have to point out that usually long lasting restaurants end up getting dingy with dust in all the crevasses but they are doing a stand up job keeping this place quite clean. I also love the beer wine store next door. Finally, there is nothing that says you are in a collage town than pitchers of beers and a shooter list! read more

The Cellar is definitely my favorite place to eat and hang out in Blacksburg. Atmosphere - The upstairs is more restaurant feeling and more family friendly. They have live music there during the week. They have a little area called the "Champagne Room" that's a bit more private, if you can manage to get it. Downstairs is the tavern area, where people go to have drinks and food in a more adult and casual setting. I usually go downstairs at night and upstairs during the day. They card in the tavern area later on during the night. They have a big TV downstairs where they play sports. The once smokey atmosphere is now gone as well, which is very nice. Beer and specials - They have a long list of beers to choose from and a recently opened section where they sell local microbrews. I have yet to check it out but I've heard good things. Weekdays 6-7pm is Hammertime where you get half off beers, on Sundays they have deals on imported beers. You can also do the "Luck of the Draw" where you pay a dollar for a random beer of their choosing. I've usually gotten stuff on the lower end of things, but its pretty fun to do and it's only a buck! Drinks - Their drinks are always good, not watered down and weak like in most places downtown. Definitely worth going for drinks alone. Food - Always great. I usually get the pita pizza which is a create your own pizza (you choose 3 ingredients) and is an awesome buy for around 5 bucks. They totally fill you up or make for yummy leftovers. I've also tried their sandwiches and subs, always come out good and fill you up. Their appetizers are also delicious - the hummus, spinach and artichoke dips, and their spanakopita's are great. Service - The one thing they're not great at is service, although they have greatly improved since I started going there. You can expect to wait a bit, especially if you're downstairs. You can also take it upon yourself to head to the bar and order if you're feeling antsy and want your stuff sooner. Upstairs they tend to come around more often. Ok, the food here is really good but the service is the WORST. I called in a take out order for a calzone and a gluten free pepperoni pizza. I had to tell the guy taking the order what I wanted over and over before he got it. (He sounded drunk) then he told me he didn't know what it would cost because he wasn't in front of his computer. He also hung up without telling me how long the wait would be. When my boyfriend and I arrive fifteen minutes later we went to the carry out shop and the guy told us we had to go downstairs to get our food. We went down there and had to convince the bouncer to let us walk over to the register because we didn't have our IDs. (I don't know why we have to be 21 to pick up our food.) Then we were told it would be another ten minutes before our food was ready. When we finally got our food home, I discovered I'd gotten a gluten free pizza covered in jalapeño peppers...no pepperoni. This Italian, Greco restaurant is a Blacksburg staple. It has a family-friendly upstairs floor (which was packed on a Saturday night) and a basement bar, which feels like a typical, college dive bar. The drink menu is extensive but I didn't come here for drinks, my brothers and I came for the pizza and subs - boy, did they deliver. We split a 16" house special pizza, which Yelp gave $3 off for checking in, and it hit the spot. The dough was chewy, the cheese was melty hot and the toppings were fresh. In addition to the pizza, we ordered mushroom ravioli, veggie sub and a bacon burger and shared family style. Each dish came with delicious, hot curly fries and the portions were very generous. For vegetarians, I highly recommend the veggie sub with tender, well-cooked veggies, topped with tangy tzatziki sauce. I love this place, for several reasons. 1-The atmosphere. If you're like me and looking to escape the hordes of undergraduates, the cellar is a good place to go. The crowd is a bit older, but still young enough to be lively. I'd recommend the bar in the basement for a late night place to hangout. The service can be a bit slow, but the servers are also the bartenders, so how hard of a time can you really give them? They work hard and they're generally pretty friendly if you talk to them. 2-The food. It won't knock your socks off because of its originality, but it is consistently good. It's the only place in Blacksburg that has a good Rueben (that I've found, anyway). The pita pizzas are good, too, and are reasonably priced for a light dinner. I've liked pretty much everything I've had here except for the steaks, which are usually on special but are too thin and overcooked. 3-The drinks. A really good beer selection, both draught and in bottles. They also do mixed drinks well. The wine isn't very good, but it's not the type of place where I'd generally order wine, anyway. read more

I've never gone wrong at the Celler! Mary and I are frequent patrons. First of all, this place is attached to a six pack store that stocks beers, and wines from local breweries and wineries as well as the best micro-brews in America. But, lets talk about the food. if you were to ask me "Joey, what should i get at the Cellar?" My emphatic answer would be "The Greek Pita Pizza!" These pizzas are made from pita dough and are 9" in diameter, great or a personal serving. you can make it how you want it or choose from several pre-arranged pizzas. If i were to stray from the pita pizza rut, I would suggest the Pasta Aegean. Sauteed large shrimp over linguine pasta noodles, tossed with feta cheese, pesto, tomatoes, mushrooms, garlic, onions and spices, sprinkled with parmesan cheese. Wow! and its less than $10! Anyway, this place is great for a group get together as well as a nice date night. The Cellar is a happening place so you got to get there early to get a seat. Up stairs is usually less crowded and aimed at dinner crowds while downstairs is the "shady underbelly" aimed toward groups of drinking buddies. Both have there advantages. Favorite restaurant in Blacksburg! Yum yum. ... A few years ago I went to The Cellar and the wait was so long, and the staff was rude I vowed to never go back. I must have been there on an off night, because I realized I've been missing out big time by not going here. It's understandable that there will be a wait if you go on a weekend during rush hours because the place is so tiny inside, but that adds to the charm. If you're waiting upstairs try out the basement, there are a lot more seats and the menu is the same. I actually prefer the basement. I went last weekend with my parents and we all loved it. I ordered a 6" gyro and curly fries. My mom tried to convince me to order an entree instead, but I am so glad I didn't listen. First off, the curly fries here are delicious. They're perfectly crunchy while not being over cooked, with some great seasoning. The gyro was so delicious, maybe I love all gyros I eat though. The gyro was pretty standard with lamb slices, lettuce, onions and tzatziki sauce. The pita was perfectly moist, sorry if you hate that word. The only thing I wish was different was if there was a little extra tzatziki sauce on top, but I probably always think that. My mom got the chicken souvlaki kabobs. The plate came with roasted potatoes, asparagus and chicken kabobs(obviously) served with tzatziki. The chicken kabobs were lightly marinated to perfection. It was such a simple dish, yet so delicious, if you're looking for a light option try this! My dad ordered the Aegean pasta dish. Which was shrimp on top of linguine, with feta cheese, pesto, tomatoes, mushrooms, garlic, and some onions. This dish was delicious as well, and tasted pretty light and fresh for a pasta dish! My favorite dish here is the BBQ chicken pizza. I think the crust is what makes it so good. It's so reasonable and delicious! I get it every time now. I worked in food service and am a forgiving person but after several instances of slow service and sullen waitresses/bar staff I'm through with you.
