I'd like to preface this review by saying that I used to love The Cellar. The Cellar was one of my favorite places in Blacksburg to grab lunch, dinner, and drinks. The basement is one of the most unique dining experiences in Blacksburg with the dark lighting and "speakeasy" vibe. I used to always be welcomed with great service, however, things have changed as of late. One of the Cellar's best deals is their "hammer time" happy hour deal, where you get a discount on a pitcher when ordered between 6-7pm. There used to never be an issue with this promotion. You would order and they would have your pitcher within a few minutes. Recently, I have ordered pitchers that take 45 minutes to receive. When I asked my server where it was 25 minutes after ordering, she told me they had "ran out" of plastic pitchers and were waiting for some to be cleaned. I wouldn't be writing this review if this was a one-off instance, but it has happened to me multiple times and I have heard of it happening to many of my close friends on multiple occasions. I am a very patient and understanding person. However, I lose patience when I feel like I am being disregarded as a patron. If they truly ran out of pitchers, why couldn't they make a compromise and bring out some pint glasses in the meantime? More importantly, why are they running out of pitchers when they know they have a daily pitcher happy hour? On another occasion, I sat in the back tent with some friends at 5:45 pm on a Wednesday night. I had an event at 7 pm and had to leave by 6:45 pm at the latest. I assumed this wouldn't be an issue. I sat down and ordered a "luck of the draw". I received my drink in about 10 minutes, which wasn't as bad as I was expecting. However, the server never came back to my table despite numerous attempts of waving her down. It reached 6:45 pm (a full hour without being checked on) and I couldn't even close out my tab. I had to leave cash on the table to cover my drink. I recently brought my father to lunch here on St. Patrick's day because it was a beautiful day outside and I knew he would enjoy The Cellar's menu. We took a seat outside, as instructed by the chalk board, and were not served or even acknowledged. After 10 minutes of sitting, we decided to move into the tent, hoping we would be noticed by a server. We sat there for another 10 minutes and were never taken care of. 20 minutes without service while my father was in town was flat-out embarrassing. We decided to get lunch at Green's and it was a lovely experience. We were immediately taken care of. I am assuming the response to this post will be something along the lines of "we are running at reduced capacity due to COVID-19, etc." This is valid, but not really an excuse in my opinion, considering that every other business in Blacksburg has been doing an amazing job during COVID. So many local businesses are being creative in finding ways to safely serve patrons and continue efficient operations of their businesses. We have been in this pandemic for over a year now, which is plenty of time to hire an additional server or order a few more 50-cent plastic pitchers. I love The Cellar's menu and ambiance and am just hoping they can figure out whatever issue is causing these problems. I want to continue to give them my business but find it hard to do when nobody will take my order. Hopefully these issues can be resolved and I can continue enjoying one of my favorite spots again. In the meantime, I will be spending my time at other establishments. read more

This restaurant was great! This was our first time here and we loved the food and our waitress. My husband did not get what he ordered. He had ordered one type of calzone and another type of calzone and didn't realize it until after he had eaten dinner off it. It was no big deal. Heart most of it and just mentioned it wasn't exactly what he had ordered. The waitress offered to bring the correct one or a free dessert but we were full and satisfied at this point. When the waitress brought us the check she had taken his meal off and she did not have to do that. She was really great and friendly. Will return here next time we are back in Blacksburg. read more

My sons and I visited the Cellar looking for pizza after hearing discouraging reports about the Mellow Mushroom. We ordered the Asiago Prosciutto and artichoke pizza, and a plain cheese pie. Most disgusting staff. The woman who works downstairs just screamed at my daughter because SHE read the ID wrong. My daughter is 22 years old and this woman was so embarrassed that she couldn't read an ID. Im disgusted and their behavior is so weird that they can't even read a 22 year old ID. Actually appauling people that work here. They have denied not one but both of my daughters while we have lived here for over fifty seven years. Embarrassing to the blacksburg community. THE BIGGEST FRICKING CALZONE! I posted a picture for reference. This calzone is more like a family-sized chicken pot pie. In some ways, it is almost too big. I know the disappointment of not finishing is countered by the jubilation of left-overs for lunch the next day. However, this foot-ball sized Italian beast is so huge, that the crust to filling ratio is a little off. I love cheese, but it's tough for me to eat a pound or two of it without plenty of bread. Otherwise, the calzone is very tasty. The crust is AWESOME. Crispy, crunchy, soft, and flavorful. I think one of things I like most about the Cellar is the seating in the basement/"Cellar." Last night was my second time at The Cellar and it was lovely! I have celiac so I'm always a little on edge about having a gluten-free meal done right, and they have been amazing both times. Food: The 9" GF Pizza that I had last time was great! I was pleasantly surprised. This time I ordered Greek Spaghetti with GF Penne replacement and a side of GF garlic bread. You should have seen my face when they landed my meal! My server confirmed for me that everything was gluten free and now that it's been several hours, I can safely say I'm feeling great. Also, a warning: when the menu says "generous helping," they aren't kidding around... either come with an empty stomach or leave with a to-go box! Service: We sat at the bar last night and I wish I had asked the name of the woman behind the counter. She was wonderful! The restaurant was moderately busy (for a Tuesday night) but our food was ready in less than 20 minutes, and she checked in with us regularly to make sure we were all good. This is a staple date night restaurant for me and my boyfriend! We prefer the downstairs seating bc the ambiance is nice down there. We had mixed feelings about coming here, at first. The few locals we asked recommended it, mentioning is was some of the better food downtown. However, the reviews on YELP mostly referenced poor service and long wait times to even speak to a waitress. We arrived on a fairly busy weeknight evening (about 9pm) and having left Hokie House because the service was terrible. Fortunately, within minutes our server greeted us. Jessie (as the bill stated) couldn't have been better. In fact, we thanked her for proving the doubters wrong. She was pleasant, came back often, knew the menu in and out and beamed a wonderful vibe. No complaints there. This isn't a high end spot, by any means. It's a dark, laid back atmosphere (downstairs) that's seemingly overrun by students. It isn't wild and rowdy like many of the other places downtown, fortunately. The food isn't great, but beats many of the chains and greasy spots downtown. And, on a positive note, they offer an extensive drink menu. We tried to sample a few things and started with the spinach salad, which was impressive. It wasn't littered with iceberg lettuce, rather fresh, crisp greens and veggies that were impressive. The dressing didn't taste like it came out of a Costco bottle, either. As for the spaghetti and meatballs, it was average, at best. Honestly, it tasted like the sauce came out of a can and the meatballs were enormous, but way overcooked. Pretty good place on the strip, but be ready for a noisy meal. I don't know if it's always like this, but it was loud as all get out when we were there on a Thursday night. It was really hard to hear each other for most of the visit. Definitely a happening little place in a college town. I like that they had bottled Stewart's sodas available in addition to their fountain drinks. We ordered some of the loaded curly fries and that was a good choice. The habanero chili is great stuff. The loaded fries aren't the same as those listed on menus you'll find on-line. The meatball sub had a serious amount of meatballs with it and the sauce worked it. Sadly the feta calzone with chicken and artichokes didn't work out for us. The dough was almost sweet, which just didn't go along with the artichokes and kind of was weird with the salty feta too. Awesome reco from a local. Started with great service from Kelsey. Told her we had cycled all day and she got us water immediately and kept the glasses full all meal. I mentioned I saw a plate of spaghetti and meatballs coming out and could not believe the size of it and in particular the meatballs. She said their meatballs were very popular and a meatball was available as an appetizer. I ordered one with extra sauce and it was absolutely crazy good! Hardly any filler - just well seasoned meat and a killer sauce. Everyone who shared it loved it especially with their garlic bread. Kelsey knew the beer and food menu inside and out, and had great suggestions. We had been told they had great pizza/calzones and Greek salads. While I cannot speak for the safety of their dine-in service, the staff does not adhere to COVID-19 guidelines put in place by delivery services (i.e., UberEats, Grubhub), and I often see employees walking around in the kitchen without a mask when I am waiting for a pickup. I got the "Mad Greek." I wonder if it would be better if it were the "Happy Greek." The meat (all 3 thin slices) was extremely dry; the yogurt sauce was like tart mayonnaise water, and everything else was basically filler to make you feel like you got your money's worth. I've been coming to The Cellar for years. They have a massive beer selection and great food. On top of that, the beer is super cheap. I've definitely paid double for some of the beers I see in other cities. I have so many great memories of this place where my friend and I would come after working at Macado's and then speed over to hit them up before they close for a meal and some drinks. This most recent time I got the black and bleu salad. It was massive and even came with garlic bread! It had the works on it as well with peppers, mushrooms and all other veggies. Such a great spot in this college town. Met up with my husband's old roommate from their time at Tech and enjoyed a nice meal and beers together as we chatted. Mike had been here years ago, by since then they did remodel the inside. Defend the stairs and your taken into a cellar turned into a bar/restaurant. The menu has options for everyone's palate and the beer options are plenty. I chose the Greek Spaghetti and a Kentucky Bourbon Barrel Ale The Greek Spaghetti really was a huge portion! I made about 3-4 meals out of it. I added grilled chicken to my dish for protein. Inside this dish is olives, feta, Greek spices of oregano, red peppers, onions,green peppers and a few others that I can't recall but this really was an addictive dish! I couldn't stop myself, but knew I had too, as I had that bourbon Ale to enjoy along with my meal. The bartender was not only serving people sitting at the bar but also the tables around it. She was on a roll watching her zip through the people serving up ice cold beer and piping hot food. The atmosphere is casual and the lighting is dim. Deafly looking forward to coming back here and trying one of the cellar baked pizzas and maybe a calzone too! I love The Cellar. The food is good. The bar tenders and wait staff are really great people. The atmosphere is low-key. The beer store has a great selection. Plus, this place is an important part of Blacksburg history. We had our work happy hour here for several years. Frequently, people would ask us to have more variety in venues, to try holding it somewhere else. We did try several other places, but had to keep coming back to The Cellar. This was largely because the bartender was so great, but also the atmosphere and the food. What dishes are the best here? I like all of their pizzas, chicken parmesan sandwich, greek salad, hummus platter, spinach and artichoke dip, pasta Aegean, meatball sub, cellar burger, and French dip sandwich. They have several vegetarian options, and have been very accomodating when my vegan friend asks for special adaptations of menu items. If you spend any time in Blacksburg, you have to have a meal and/or a drink at The Cellar at least once! It's a Blacksburg classic. read more

I have recommended this place to ANYONE in Blacksburg, great food and typically great service. BUT tonight I got approached by a worker who accused me of taking drinks outside of the restaurant WHICH NEVER HAPPENED. I sat down at my table ready to order my typical meal and got approached accusing me of taking drinks outside the restaurant and taking pictures of me and my friends having a drink that was never from the cellar. I've worked in the service industry and completely understand what it is like - but when trying to explain the perception she had on us she told me to shut up and wouldn't hear me out. One of my all time favorite places to eat in Blacksburg. I always try to pay them a visit whenever I come to Blacksburg. My two favorite things to order: Bacon & cheese fries and chicken kabobs, but you can't really go wrong with anything on their menu. The order of cheese fries is enough to get you full, as an appetizer you'll definitely want to share with at least 1-2 other people. Key ingredients such as nuts and cheese were left off the descriptions for certain foods and our server made us feel like we were causing him a huge hassle just by ordering.
