Dr. Dorfman and his excellent staff are kind, capable, and they ensure that any procedure will be completed with virtually no discomfort whatsoever. This dental practice has all of the latest technology for diagnostics and treatment. Dr. Dorfman has spared no expense to address every possible concern or issue, a patient might have. I was misdiagnosed by two different doctors, yet Dr. Dorfman correctly diagnosed my issue (rather serious) over the telephone, without even looking in my mouth! Yes, he is that good. In addition to Dr. Dorfman, who will keep tweaking your dental work until it is absolutely perfect....you want your dentist to be a perfectionist....there are other experts on staff here. Endodontists, orthodontists, gum specialists, and this means that you can get all of your dental work completed in one location. Back in 1993, I was doing a lot of television to promote my books and started to notice how bad my smile looked on film. I saw Dr. Dorfman's advertisement in New York magazine and made a visit. His practice is like no other I've been to. Dorfman has a blue-chip background - college and dental school at the University of Penn and a tech-geek bent that makes him the first on the dental block to learn all the new tools and techniques. I first spoke to him about whether I should invest in braces or do cosmetic dentistry. He felt the healthiest option was for me to do braces - something his practice had no affiliation in at that time, but given I had no patience, I asked about what cosmetic dentistry could offer. I appreciated that he gave me an honest answer that did not increase his bottom line. Needless to say given I did not want to have a rack of metal in my mouth, I forgo braces and opted to do some cosmetic dentistry to even out my smile. Dr. Dorfman did the job in two visits back in 1993 and to this day, no one can tell that some of my teeth are laminates and bonded and the work has stood the 21-year test of time. They look and feel great after all these years. It was not inexpensive but is was money well-spent. I don't have dental insurance so I believe in working with the best dental practice I can. But no experience compares to Dr. Dorfman's. I have gotten my dental works here from braces, crown, wisdom teeth surgery to cleaning. Started reviewing all my medical because too many of my friends were in need of a great dentist or doctor and there wasn't an easy way to get this info. I hope more yelpers start reviewing their medical professionals to help the newbies. But I guess with since all the good ones get sweeped up to the point you can't get an appointment, it's always hard to see what will happen. The Center for Special Dentistry is a mix of old school dentist and new technology. While I would say relative to a few other dentists in NYC, their waiting areas and rooms could use an upgrade, the technology they employ is perfect. I would say there wasn't a lot of extra wait time in the waiting room, even from my very first visit to this location. They appear to keep on time and be quite good about service and attentiveness. They are also really good about fitting people in if there is a need for emergency dentistry. The x-ray is the type where it's both film and digital at the same time. This is important to me because I - like many smaller Asian women - have a "jr. jaw" (an adult with a mouth the size of a adolescent) and have fairly significant problems with those that are full on digital or full on film. So many cuts and sores due to dental x-rays! If you're in the same boat, you'll have the usual discomfort, but it won't be multiple rounds because the machine literally can't take x-rays in your particular mouth. While I give the center 4 stars, the fifth really comes from the staff. Dr. Hemali Ajmera, who has - fair warning yelpers - become a friend, did my cleaning and helped guide me through the procedure. I found out that she comes from a long family of dentists, so she takes her work extremely seriously. She is an excellent cosmetic dentist and has done whitenings for a number of my friends all with positive feedback. This is what really first clued me in to going to her. The cleaning was really well done and I was happy to have my Dr. do it instead of a technician. When she was done, I felt like she really knew what was going on in my mouth. She's also very young, hip and relate-able. For those of you reading this considering cosmetic dental services, I find it can be helpful to have someone who seems to have some sense of similar aesthetic understanding to talk to about what you're trying to accomplish and why. I can tell you, if you want to do something that makes no sense, she will absolutely advise you against it. She is not the type of Dr. that is trying to hard sell you into services you don't need. The info she gave me on procedures was exceedingly professional. She took great care in telling me about what insurance would and would not cover. She named a number of options in helping me figure out how to deal with payment. Her follow-up was wonderful as well. I love the Center for Special Dentistry. When it comes to maintaining my oral health Dr. Joanna is the best! She provides me with thorough cleanings, examinations and even dental cosmetic work. I really like the way she put together a detail plan to help patients better understand how to maintain their oral health. Living in NJ I could easily find another dentist closer to my area. Can't speak to the services of the indivdual dentists because I ended up not going to this office after careful research. It saddens me to write this, but I think it is extremely upsetting, bordering on unethical to offer services to patients with dental phobias, while having specialists in their employ that are substandard in their dental practice. The website cleverly only gives first names of the specialists so that the patient can't get the full picture of the specialist, including lawsuits, license suspensions, and horrible bad reviews from other places they have worked. Beware a website that doesn't give the FULL NAME of the doctor you are going to see. What a terrible thing to do to people that already have a phobia about getting care, to then get them suckered in by the "veneer" of how wonderful the care is-- and then they find out later that there is all this BAD stuff convieniently left out of the glowing vitae on the website. If you want to get your care from someone that might have had "issues" in the past, then go there, but be aware that google may not always bring up everything that is going on with these "first name only" specialists that you are going to see--and what you don't know may, in fact, hurt you big time. Like all of us, we've been to our fair share of dentists' offices. Scarily, it became my decision/responsibility to start to take care of myself after I graduated college and a friend referred me to Dr. Dorfman. From the get go he was very approachable and actually cared about informing me about my teeth. What I thought was going to be a quick cleaning and check up for my first appointment turned out to be a two hour consultation where I learned more than I could have ever imagine about my teeth/mouth. I had braces when I was younger and have been going to dentists twice a year my whole life and no one ever told me that I had "stumpy roots" or a misaligned bite before. Dr. Dorfman gave me more personal information after a two hour consultation than my childhood dentist gave me in 22 years! Dr. Dan Vogel was great, and his staff is really friendly. For an initial consultation Dr. Vogel took x-rays, provided consultation on a cracked filling I had sustained, and set a plan for a follow up visit right then and there. His office and staff make the entire experience amazingly professional, efficient, and offer the kind of expertise that usually one can only dream of finding. I've been a patient of Jeffrey Dorfman for 10+ years and would not even consider going to another dental office. I called up today as I had a problem with a tooth, and Jeffrey worked through his lunch break to take x-rays, put in a temp filling, etc. Always putting me at ease with his great sense of humor, he quickly, thoroughly, and quite magically performs his work time and time again. I have been a patient of Jeff since 1989 and I must say that the dental care he and his office staff provides is extremely professional and top notch! His office utilizes the latest in high-tech digital equipment with great old school service. In the past I have always avoided dentists because I was so terrified of needles and dental procedures. Jeff has always set my mind at ease with his excellent and calming bedside manner. Being in the medical field for over two decades, I know excellence in a physician and an entire practice. That's exactly what I found here during a consultation with Dr Dorfman. He was extremely patient, took his time explaining all viable options open to me and rationales for each. Dr Dorfman even began extrapolating data from a few of his dozens of articles and research published. He's not only brilliant with years of expertise superseding all those in dentistry in the Manhattan area - he's humble and actually one of the very few perhaps non existent practitioners that actually care about the patient in totality - in having the best outcome with longevity. Unlike most, he's not after collecting what's in your pocket - he wants what's best for his patients.
