Everything he placed in my mouth fell out, a week later in one case, and a month later, in another. When he put it in, he did not prep the surface being filled; he tossed the bit of filling into the spot, and said, "That's good enough." And he did nothing to secure the filling. I've been seeing Dr. Padukone for several years now. He's friendly, professional, and he's never once tried to upsell me on some unnecessary procedure or tooth whitening program. A few months ago I discovered some pretty bad tooth decay that had gone unnoticed because it was hiding under the gum. I went back repeatedly to get a chipped tooth fixed only to have the piece break off again within the week. It has now been fixed by another dentist for over two years without a glitch! He saw me on the Friday before a long holiday weekend when I called in a panic -- I had an emergency and my regular dentist was away. I went to my old dentist's assistant and he did something so painful and awful I was sure I was in for big trouble. I looked on yelp to see who might see me. Believe the hype. My experience with Dr. Padukone was so unbelievable that I rushed straight to my computer just to write this review. After all, finding a quality dentist is comparable to finding an honest mechanic: once they have earned your trust, you form a life-long bond. Several months back, at a sleek and sexy dental clinic in Scottsdale, AZ, I had a series of X-Rays (free for new customers!), cleaning and check-up done. It was there that the doctor warned me of two jaw-threatening cavities that needed emergency crowns ($1,200 each) so that they wouldn't become root canals. At first, I was panic-stricken and was ready to sign on any dotted line... but then their "Benefits Coordinator," a woman named Hortencia, began selling me on the series as if I were in the market for a new car that was just out of my price range. Something felt amiss. Thus, I left with no work done. Flash forward to now. In addition to my cavities, I'd now developed a chipped tooth. Yelp's reviews assured me that Dr. Padukone was the man to trust. I went in, X-rays in hand, and we discussed the chipped tooth. He decided it would be best to simply shave it down a bit as capping it would likely serve as only a temporary solution. He was about to leave, thinking that was it. I asked, "wait, what about the cavities in the X-rays?" He answered, "what cavities? There aren't any cavities." I had him check my mouth, poking this way and that, examining the exact two teeth that needed 'emergency crowns.' "No cavities," he assured me. The total charge for my visit: $0. Men like Dr. Padukone are few and far between. I didn't pay him anything, so the next best thing I can offer is my overwhelming endorsement on Yelp. I have to admit I initially picked Dr. Padukone because he was the dentist closest to me that was in my insurer's network. I did a little homework and was surprised by the uniformly strong reviews he has, so I decided "what the heck, I can always pick another dentist later." It's been mentioned already that the office is a little ghetto and a no frills place, which is pretty much a spot on description. But let's be real, are you going to a dentist's office because it's nicely decorated in pleasant, warm earth tones and they're playing Enya over the speakers? Or do you go because the dentist is an excellent clinician with good chair-side manner? Dr. Padukone clearly has both of these in excess and is one of the rare dentists who does all the work himself and doesn't pass it on to a hygienist. He was a tad tough and aggressive when it comes to scaling, but clean, slick feeling teeth in the end is worth it. He's very thorough and addresses all your questions and concerns (no cavities - hooray for me!). I also quizzed Dr. Padukone a little bit on dental technology since I follow it a bit at work and found him to be up to speed on the latest clinical developments. It's always great to see that your dentist hasn't been lulled into an intellectual stupor when they're in a private practice. So if you're looking for a new dentist on the UWS, definitely consider Dr. Padukone. He's very able and very easy on the patients. read more

I went to Dr. Padukone also because of his yelp reviews and I couldn't agree more. He is so so so very nice and unassuming, not a pushy dentist at all. He is very informative and makes sure you know your mouth, what's going on, the hows and why's and then he gives you his opinion (which he backs up with medical knowledge..."I just read this white paper..."). He is a bit talkative, but I don't mind (he wears a face mask so he's not all breathing in your face), keeps my mind off the pointy metal objects he's sticking in my mouth. Took me about a month from call time to appointment time, so make sure you don't need anything ASAP. Overall, I highly recommend him. I only switched dentists because I moved from SF to NYC, and I loved my previous dentist also. Always nice to get it right on the first try when you have to change all your providers. read more

When losing a filling, I tend to see the tooth as half-empty rather than half-full. With 6 baby teeth pulled out as a kid, a botched wisdom tooth extraction, and five torturous years in braces, I'm a bit of a dental downer. Needless to say, discovering a sudden hole in my bottom front molar left me pretty scared (and stuck with a stubbornly lodged crushed red pepper flake). Accommodated within 24 hours at Dr. Padukone's for my first visit, I braced myself for the worst. When I left less than 30 minutes later, I couldn't remember if I had actually just had my tooth repaired, or caught up with an old friend. Dr. P is caring, kind, professional, warm, and gentle, and he will put you at ease within seconds (and that's without laughing gas or novocaine!). My tooth was repaired so effortlessly, I'm not quite sure it really happened. He emailed me later that day just to check in and see how my temporary filling was holding up. Seriously. Awesome! Not having dental coverage sucks, and they were incredibly compassionate and accommodating to my budget, interested in forming a true, solid client base rather than focusing solely on making a quick buck. The staff is great - helpful, friendly, reliable, and refreshingly pleasant to deal with. On another (musical) note, not only is Dr. Padukone a (den)talented dentist, but he's also an incredible percussionist, performing at some pretty sweet venues around the city (like the Rubin Museum of Art!). Whether it be the drill or the drumsticks, this doc knows how to do it all! My appointment was toothfully an all around great experience, and I won't go anywhere else! read more

I loved my other dentist but got a new job and insurance changed so had to find someone else. Yelp led me to Dr. Padukone and I am very happy it did! Though I had to book an appointment 2 1/2 months in advance, it was worth the wait... and luckily I didn't need any urgent dental care. The staff was friendly and professional. Dr. Padukone performed the cleaning himself. Pointing out things my other dentist did not, and even helped me find oral surgeons in the area that accepted my insurance to remove my wisdom teeth. I work in the music industry so we chatted it up about he is very musical and enjoys playing (errr I think) the saxophone. Dr Padukone did a great job cleaning my teeth and fitting me for a night guard, but after a year of his services, I'm switching to a different dentist. I like how approachable and chatty he is, the receptionists are very pleasant as well, but I find the wait for appointments to be unacceptably long. All scheduled appointments are at least a month and a half away - this is ok if you're just going every 6 months for a cleaning but it's impossible to accommodate any last-minute reschedules (those will put your rescheduled appointment at least 3 months away!). To alleviate this problem I think he could grow his practice and hire more dentists. The office could also use some updating (they must have funds for that considering how busy it is). read more

I, too, decided to go to Dr. Padukone based on yelp reviews, and I have to honestly thank everyone who wrote such good reviews about him, because they were on the money. I'll start by saying I'm terrified of dentists, and have been since I was a small child with a horrible pediatric dentist. Dr. Padukone was SO comforting. I was honest with him in saying that I hadn't been to the dentist in roughly 5 or 6 years because of my fear. His entire staff (I met Carmen, Vanna, and Stephanie during my appointment yesterday) was so friendly and welcoming. They definitely made me feel at ease, which was wonderful. Dr. Padukone is a really friendly guy, he explains everything that he does as well as the reason why. He even gave me options for my cleaning depending on which one would be less scary to me (no dentist has EVER done that for me). We talked about his family, my family, my plans for school in the future, even Bernie Madoff lol. I felt like I was talking to a family friend. He definitely shows genuine concern for your oral health and doesn't do procedures for the sake of getting money out of you (which a lot of dentists do -- just like my terrible pediatric dentist). It was the first time I ever felt so comfortable in the dentist's chair, and even left with a smile on my face (also a first for me). I am very happy with his entire office and almost can't wait to go back in 6 months (also a first!). I highly recommend him, especially if you're scared of the dentist like I am. I have been to Dr. Padukone twice. He is very skilled, and he also has a great demeanor. One time I went to him to have a cavity filled, and he decided instead hat we should just keep an eye on it. I was very impressed by that! His office is nice and clean but not very fancy. That is probably why he can maintain low rate. I recently purchased DentalSave, which is more of a discount plan than actual insurance, and he accepted that. read more

It all starts with Carmen - the receptionist. Then there is Dr. Padukone himself, from India, his daughter went to Mount Holyoke and his son is a PhD at UMAss Amherst in economics (ok so he is talkative but that's only because I went to school in the 5 college area... maybe.lol) He explains everything as he does it; he makes suggestions and did not make me feel guilty about time since previous appointment, he shows you what he is talking about with one of those mirror thingys, he is funny, he understands that you might not want to "everything at once" and best of all they had quoted me 150 on the phone and so only billed me 150... (I discovered this at home when looking at his bill.. I got a 220 dollar discount because of the phone quote). Old style family dentist who doesn't believe in doing dental work just to do the dental work. he actually confirmed that previous dentist (whom I hated) had done some stuff just to do it (ie. not necessary), make availability when major toothache, he remembers you visit to visit and so does Carmen... First time I went there she was asking a teenager about his bday party and SAT preps.. I have to stop but THEY ARE GREAT ;-) read more

I've been going to Dr. Padukone for 2 years. He is by far the best dentist I have ever been to. Dr. Padukone really cares about his patients. He remembers every conversation that you have with him, and when I told him I was nervous about running the NY Marathon, he texted me day of to say he was tracking me and congratulated me on my finish! He is worried about insurance companies over charging his patients, and his office staff makes sure that you are completely aware of your financial obligations so there are no surprises at the time of service. I have had many dentists perform unnecessary procedures to upcharge me. Dr. Padukone would never do that to anyone. In times where he does need to perform a procedure, he explains every step, tells you when it might be painful, and then apologizes if you are uncomfortable at any time. Yes, Dr. Padukone is a nice person for the most part but my last visit to him put me off ever going back again. He started talking about his political beliefs to me while I was in the chair. That alone is not good. But it grew and grew until I finally had to stop him and tell him that A) he shouldn't assume that his patients all feel the same way he does, and B) there's a reason religion and politics are subjects that usually are avoided in such settings. He then started yelling, actually yelling at me while his fingers were in my mouth that I'm wrong and that I obviously don't know enough about the person I support because I didn't bother to educate myself. His staff and his waiting patients all heard him go on and on at top volume. I could tell his assistant in the room was embarrassed (but not shocked) when she looked at me while he was yelling and rolled her eyes. Then he started in on religion. He's an atheist. I know this fact because he then started loudly going off on religion being a bunch of BS. I'm agnostic myself but what on earth made this man think any of these topics or his views on them were wise things to talk / yell about in his office?!? I just stopped even trying to respond and let him finish the procedure. Paid and left quickly without speaking to him again. This is a place of business. He needs to remember that and never get too comfortable when dealing with an array of people walking in his door. Even if I agreed with him about everything he said, none of this should have happened during an office visit. Polite, courteous conversation is fine. Friendly small talk? Great. Yelling at your patients for calling you out on being really inappropriate? Unacceptable and totally unprofessional. Add to that a cold, unhelpful receptionist (example: wrong dates given for upcoming appointments with no apologies ) and dentistry that is okay but not great - just had that last procedure redone by my new dentist - I think Dr. Padukone needs to seriously rethink his business practice. If he was that way with one patient, chances are he's that way with others. Not cool. read more

I had high hopes for this one - it's true the receptionist and dentist are wonderfully personable, but the work done is subpar. Within a few weeks of having my bonding done, it falls out while brushing! The office also turns off its phone system when it's closed so you can't reach them to leave a message. I just visited Dr. Padukone's office for the first time and can honestly say I've never had a more pleasant experience at the dentist. I was greeted at the door by name by the actual dentist and received incredibly good, personalized care the entire visit. I hadn't been to the dentist in 6 years after a very unpleasant experience, but Dr. Padukone changed that for me. He's a wonderful conversationalist and I learned a ton about Indian music in addition to hearing a few amazing recordings while he was cleaning my teeth. Took me right away even though I called in with emergency and they told me I would have to wait. Charged me LESS then he quoted me on phone and did EXTRA work (cleaning, quick whitening on top of checking out problem I had). Very conversational and explained to me exactly what was going on in my mouth. All such a refreshing change from my previous Tony "I love to drill" Hayward dentist! It's a down to earth office and Dr. Padakone spends time explaining procedures, discussing dental history, etc. I never felt that he was trying to "upsell me" to some "needed" procedure.
