We came down from Westchester when we lived there, and across town in the city. The dentists are top of the line as are the hygienists and all the assistants, and the office staff as well. I hate to write this, but I feel the need to share my experience and hopefully this practice will work to change the way they conduct business and not replicate this with future patients. First time we came in, my wife and I had our teeth whitened, great experience, no issues at all, and very friendly staff. Pleased with the results and we were looking forward to making this our new dental practice. The second time I came in was for a routine cleaning (every 6 months) which my insurance had always covered for previous dental visits (both in and out of network) at other practices. $0 out of pocket always. The cleaning wasn't great, the hygienist was working on my back molar and I spent half the time spitting out blood and what seemed to be pieces of my gums, not ideal. But... that wasn't the issue. When I went to leave, they asked me to pay upfront in full. Never been asked nor done that before with any dentist (out of network included). I was in some pain, and wanted to leave, so I didn't really question this. The receptionist told me she'd submit the claim to my insurance and they'd reimburse. Low and behold once the claims were submitted and I spoke w/ my insurance company, the dentist had added multiple procedures which weren't covered, and I was never told (while sitting in their chair) what they were doing or adding on, and they never asked for my approval. I thought I was getting the same cleaning I always get every 6 months. Not the case. I ended up getting charged ~$900, and my insurance covered $350. I called to resolve this issue with the practice and they told me they don't work based on what insurance covers, rather based on what they find and how to best treat. Hmmm. Why not explain to the patient what you are doing may be out of scope of a typical cleaning, and have the patient understand what is happening and make the decision for themselves? Also doesn't explain why they did a full set of xrays which are supposed to be done every 5 years, and the previous one had been done only a couple years ago. No need to do again. Seems like they just wanted to make as much money off me as possible. Unfortunately, they lost two patients as a result. In all my years of going to various dentists, I've never had an experience like this before. I advise future patients to ask what they are doing (at all times), and anticipate them doing things without telling you, which may not be covered by your insurance. Or else you'll end up paying a lot out of pocket. read more

I have been seeing Dr. Vogel for quite a few years now. I am happy to say that I really trust him. He has done great work when I've needed it. He always explains exactly what he is going to do, and I appreciate that. The staff are courteous and professional. Yesterday, I came in for a cleaning and check up. Patricia was my hygienist. She did a great job. In my consultation with Dr. Vogel after the cleaning, we agreed that there are a couple of areas for us to "keep watching". These are teeth that already have had work done on them and may need work in the future but for now, it is not necessary. All in all, this is a great practice. I wish that my medicare insurance could cover it, but my particular plan unfortunately does not. Ultimately, I decided to pay "out of pocket" for a service that I feel is very trustworthy. Reached out to these guys as a new patient to schedule an appointment because their website says they accept most major insurance plans (I have Delta Dental). When they called me to schedule an appointment, however, they told me this was a "mistake" and that they don't accept any insurance. Direct copy and paste from their site today (11/26/18): "Our practice accepts most major credit cards and insurance plans ... We'll work with your insurance provider to maximize your coverage and meet your needs and your budget." Evidently this is not true. A professional office should represent their services truthfully and accurately, and if they say they take insurance, they should honor that commitment. I'll be going elsewhere. read more

Can you say ..... the best dentist ..... I broke a molar on Sunday....called all my dear friends for a recommendation . All raved about their dentist. Called all and not a return call. Decided to Yelp and use Health Grades and found Dr Vogel.... Left a message and bam.... a return call from the Dr himself within a few hours. He asked if I had pain...and I did not.... squeezed me on Monday at 4 by 545 PM my tooth was repaired and perfect! Truly amazing staff and competency. Friendly, curteous, professional, enthusiastic, fast. Really, about as good an experience at a dental offices as I could imagine. Taking a recommendation from a (non-yelp) friend, I went to Dr. Vogel after a long hiatus from professional dental care, and fortunately there was nothing major needed. But after the quick and guilt-free inspection, photos and xrays, and cleaning, I should have no problem keeping my 6 months schedule in the future. Oh, and people are curious about prices. I paid $410 for a cleaning, initial inspection by the dentist, and full set of x-rays (this is all pre-insurance.) To be honest, I have no idea how this compares with other dentists. read more

I'm afraid of the dentist, and it was severe pain that lead me to this office after checking yelp. All I can say is everyone there is nice and the work done (dr Vogel) is top notch and very nearly pain-free. After the acute issue (fixed perfectly and painlessly) I've gone back for cleaning and another filling that was less of an emergency. Three days ago, I was suffering from incredible mouth pain. A shard of popcorn kernel had irritated my gum, and it had become infected and inflamed. I called Central Park West Dental at 6 pm, and received a return call from Dr. Vogel that same evening. He assured me that he would see me the following day, and gave me a few tips for how to ease the pain in the meantime. The next day, I had an appointment at 10:30 am; Dr. Vogel looked at the issue, helped provide some temporary relief, and prescribed me the needed antibiotics and pain killers. Throughout the visit, he was his typical kind, informative, and reassuring self. Three days later I'm on the mend! I would highly recommend Central Park West Dental - both for regular checkups and emergency needs. I've been a Yelp member for years but this is the first time I've actually wanted to review a business myself. I'm just that grateful. read more

Dr. Shipper is an extremely competent dentist who walked me through every step of his procedures and even gave me a tooth by tooth info session about what work i've had done before, etc. I am an unusual case because I have braces and he had to work around them. Furthermore, my decision to go in for a checkup was motivated by some painful gum swelling that recently occurred. It turns out it was an abscess and he injected an antibiotic into it. I was really impressed by his bedside manner and he made quick work of the damaged part of my gums after the initial evaluation. Now, I'm waiting for the antibiotics to do their magic and I will be back in a week or so for a full cleaning! ... Not really something I wanted to do during my birthday week, but hey, better now than later. Of course, the one bad part of dental procedures that you can't avoid in this country is insurance. And the rather inflated prices of procedures that are passed on to the consumer. Luckily, the office manager was on hand to make it as painless as possible, and when we found something that was not covered by my insurance (the antibiotic) she called to confirm that it was not. We went through line by line about the things that happened during the visit and came up with a dollar total that I have to pay out of pocket. So right now I am out of pocket a couple hundred bucks and am hopefully receiving most of that back. That feeling sucks really hard, but that isn't a reflection on the quality of their service. For those whose insurance allows you to go visit Dr. Shipper, I would highly recommend it as he is definitely a cut above any dentist I have visited in my adult life. read more

All of my coworkers go to this dentist - Dr. Vogel and his assistants are very professional, experienced, and courteous. I have recommended several friends to go here as well. The office is conveniently located near a subway stop, is clean, and is easy to find. On my first visit, I was a little off-put because there wasn't someone at the front desk and I was waiting around for a while. But when I actually went in to be examined, Dr. Vogel did a great job and also had high-tech equipment - very up to standard and beyond. The woman who cleaned my teeth both times so far was accommodating and very personable. Very caring and very meticulous in her work. Oh my goodness I am in love with this practice! I moved to New York a little over a year ago, and have been putting off finding a dentist because at 23 years of age, yes, I still cry like a baby every time I'm in that chair. Everyone at work recommended this place to me, and I just had my first exam. Oral cancer screening, thorough xrays and pictures taken, and a cleaning. I won't tell you how many cavities they found (bring on the tears when they fill them in!!), but I will say that every single person at CPW Dental is so friendly, enthusiastic, and knowledgeable! Dr. Shipper shaved my tooth down for a crown preparation in a very sloppy manner. He accidentally cut down some of the tooth behind and also created constant gum pain above which I never had in my entire life . The tooth was also drilled down much too short to hold the crown and I now have to build it up. I have never encountered such an incompetent dentist . I am now searching for a trustworthy one which seems harder to come by these days . read more

Best dentist in NYC. I come from a family of plenty of dentists. Unfortunately, they all live far from NYC. I used to wait until I visit one of them because I thought a lot of dentists in NY just want your money, and don't really care to much about your dental, or doing whatever they can to help you and guide you to keep your teeth healthy. This is by far the best dental practice I've been to during the 11 years I've been living in Manhattan. By using state-of-the-art equipment and a close-up video apparatus, Drs. Vogel and Shipper, and hygienist, Briana, made it their mission to resolve whatever exposed- nerve issues were occuring in my back teeth. My previous doctor could never figure out the problem! This past weekend, my boyfriend and I were on vacation for my birthday in New York City, when unfortunately on Friday around 3:30pm my tooth broke, and the filling came out! We called about 10 places that were listed as "emergency dental services" in the area around Central Park, but every where kept saying they could not get me in. Luckily I came across CPW Dental on Google. I called and spoke with Heidi the receptionist who was warm and friendly, and got me in right away, she even called my insurance company to make sure everything would be covered, and explained the best payment options to us. The whole staff was really knowledgeable, and made me feel comfortable even will drilling at my tooth. If anyone needs to go to a dentist in the NYC area, I would 100% recommend them! read more

On Friday June 18th I called the dental office of Dr. David Shipper to see if they accepted my dental insurance plan. I was told unequivocally that yes, they did; so I made an appointment for the following Monday morning. After my cleaning, as I was confirming my appointment for the next day to see the doctor, I was told "So that's $475 for today." I responded that I had been told, by that office, one business day earlier, that they accepted my Aetna dental plan. The young lady "explained" that, no, they do not accept any insurance, but that they would be helpful enough to hand me forms to fill out in hopes of getting partial re-imbursement from my insurance provider. I was shocked by this demand for immediate payment after having been told without any qualification whatsoever that they indeed accepted my plan. Of course, I would never have made the appointment had I been told the truth at the beginning. The office manager, Denytza, came over and immediately tried to spin the correct story into their new story, saying "So the issue is that you were told that we do not accept insurance, but you made the appointment anyway, so..." at which point I interrupted to say "No, no, the issue is that I was not told you don't take insurance, and was in fact told the opposite," and that I would never have scheduled any work with their office had I known that it was a veritable shakedown. I received no response other than repeated statements that they do not accept insurance, and demands for immediate payment--and for my social security number. Denytza told me she needed my social in order to process my insurance papers. This is not true. I have since confirmed with my insurance company that the dentist does not need my social security number to process any claim; it is of course processed using my member ID number. (details and factual info relating to this recorded phone call, Aetna call reference # 7988853, available upon request) It seems they hoodwink patients into incurring a bill, and then use your SS# to report you to credit bureaus. Therefore I do not believe that it was an innocent mistake by whomever I spoke with that first Friday afternoon. This situation has all the hallmarks of a scam, and we intend to treat it as such, reporting to the ADA as well as the Office of Professional Ethics. read more

I am not one who loves going to the Dentist, but, I recently went in for a cleaning and a filling and all I can say is it was a great experience. The cleaning was more than thorough, the Hygienist did a fantastic job. The filling was smooth and painless. This place is as good as it gets! By that time I was out of state and I went to a different dentist and she said the procedure was not correctly performed. I had to perform it again and pay for it again. I have had good dental care here-- the crown that I had done was as painless and effective as could be. I also have nothing but praise for my hygienist, Brianna, who is so thorough and so nice. I don't like a lot of chitchat when I'm at the dentist's, but so enjoy her presence. She always explains everything she is doing each step of the way, and never lectures me on what I have done wrong to possibly cause problems. A real pro. And the staff -- Heidi and Shari -- are always so efficient and friendly -- makes the dreaded dental visits a lot easier to take! I also appreciate that the office is open one Saturday each month -- they were terrific when I needed an emergency appointment on one of those Saturdays. read more

First visit- After I've been told by a student at NYU school of Dentistry that they would have to pull out a tooth I decided to look for a dentist who could give me a second opinion. I search yelp and came across very good reviews for Central Park West Dental and Dr. Vogel. I quickly made an appointment.. The day came and I went to the office. The staff was so friendly and greets you with a smile. They set me into a room and got me ready for Vogel. He came in and introduced himself and right away he wanted to know what was going on and how he can help. I began to tell him and he took an x-ray of my tooth. He explained there was no reason why the school would tell me they had to pull my tooth, but he can save it. I just needed a root canal and a crown. He referred me to a endodontist first to take care of the root canal and then I made an appointment to come back for the crown. Long story short everything with the root canal went well and I got my crown. I normally would feel pain when I get novacaine but Dr. Vogel was very gentle. He explained to me everything that was going on and assured me that the crown came out well. He just had to adjust it a bit. I was very grateful I didn't lose my tooth and Vogel was able to save it for me. I would refer anyone to see him if you have a serious problem. Second Visit- Its 5 months later after I had an successful root canal but all of a sudden I started to have pain. I didn't know what to do and I was about to go away on vacation. I knew I couldn't deal with my tooth hurting and be able to enjoy myself on my trip, so I made the call to Dr. Vogel's office for help once again. I thought it was the same tooth that was worked on but Vogel checked and didn't think it was the same tooth...I was sent to the endodontist as well for him to check it out as well. Dr. Bui didn't see anything either. A few days has past and it turned out my upper tooth was the guilty source of my pain. So Dr. Vogel checked and told me I would need another root canal...not that I wanted to spend a lot of money right before going to Las Vegas, but what choice did I have...I made the appointment and he got to work. This time he did the root canal for me, pain free which I loved. He put in a temporary filling and told me I would have to come back for the final filling which I did. I felt so much better when it was done. He just told me I would have to come back down the line for a crown but for right now I was ok to enjoy myself on vacation. (which I did). Now I just have to go back for a cleaning and I should be good. I'm 100% satisfied with all my treatments I have had so far. read more

I've entered the 21st Century!! At least in terms of dentistry... After 30 years of seeing the same dentist, today I tried a brand new one. I always liked my old dentist, but when he retired I decided not to go to any of his partners from the same office but to try someone new. I had heard about dentists usually new technology to create crowns in the office within two hours. My only complaint about my old dentist is that the last two crowns required a total of five visits each! (First, I showed up with a cracked tooth and got a temporary crown, then returned for the measurement of the new crown, then back again for the fitting but it wouldn't fit, so back again for remodeling the tooth and a new measurement for the replacement crown, and then the final successful fitting.) Not only does this new dentist have the technology to do in-office crowns in two hours, but they also do electronic X-rays with 80% less radiation exposure. Plus, you can see them yourself, right away on the screen opposite the examination chair. They also have a high-resolution camera so that they can show you individual teeth enlarged on the big screen. They will email any photo or X-ray to you. But, not only do they have all this technology, they also have an extreme attention to detail, much more thorough--both the hygienist and doctor. It was an entirely different experience for me. Plus, they were painless. Plus, they emailed me the photo of my tooth that had a broken filling and a crack in the underlying tooth that they will cover with a crown on my next visit (using the special in-office crown technology! They can't use it for every crown, but they can for this one!). Anyway, he's so much better than any dentist I've experienced previously, I would encourage anyone in the area to give him a try. I was having some issues with a tooth causing some discomfort and my regular dentist in Long Island was on vacation...what to do in this nebulous world of oral care providers? I hopped on Yelp and was quite encouraged by the reviews I saw for Dr. Vogel. Called to book an appointment, explained what was going on, and they were able to get me in that day. I met Dr. Vogel and he was a real pleasure - gave me all the time in the world, explained everything that he was looking at and checking on, and summed up his recommendation clearly, always checking with me that I was ok with what he was doing. The office was small but well appointed, the equipment seemed top of the line, the chair was super-comfortable, and everyone there was extremely sweet and friendly. On the Friday before Labor Day I was experiencing a dental emergency, and when I called Dr. Vogel's office they were extremely accommodating in fitting me in to their schedule before the holiday weekend. I am very anxious when it comes to going to the dentist, but Dr Vogel and his staff were very patient, gentle, and this was by far the best dental care I have experienced. I had no pain over the weekend and was able to enjoy the long weekend. I will definitely be returning to their office and feel confident I have found my new dentist for years to come. read more
