Went here while visiting Portland with family because it was my sister's pick. The restaurant itself looks great. Classic dark steakhouse/grill room atmosphere, open kitchen, good energy, friendly people. Unfortunately, the food execution did not match the appearance or pricing. Our waitress was very nice and genuinely trying, but it was her first night after only a couple hours of training, which showed. To the restaurant's credit, the manager/supervisor was sharp, knowledgeable, and handled questions immediately. The biggest miss was the "Steak & Cheese" appetizer described as: "Beef Carpaccio, Fried Goat Cheese, Greens, Fried Capers, Red Onion, Aioli" What arrived was essentially a large salad topped with thick-cut beef and heavy dressing. I actually had to dig underneath the greens to find the fried goat cheese. Once I found it, the goat cheese itself was excellent. The "carpaccio," however, was not carpaccio in any recognizable form. Thick slices of beef covered in dressing completely missed the point of the dish. I love both carpaccio and fried goat cheese, so this should have been an easy win. I also found the steak menu surprisingly limited for a place presenting itself as a serious grill room. No New York strip, only a "NY Sirloin," plus essentially a ribeye and hanger steak option. Oddly, for Portland, Maine, there was also no lobster on the menu. I ordered the hanger steak entree with fries. The fries were excellent. The hanger steak itself was average at best, especially at the price point. Overall, the restaurant has atmosphere and potential, but the food felt more style than substance. We went the night before Valentine's Day and had a phenomenal meal. We have been to The Grill Room many times and don't ever have a bad meal there. They are one of our go-to restaurants because of this. If you can get a seat at the kitchen, do it and watch the chefs do their thing. You can also sit at bar if tables are full. I had the hangar steak entree with chimichurri and it was packed with flavor. Perfectly cooked steak! I also got the spicy broccolini, which was still crisp and had a good kick. My husband had the duck. If you don't think you like duck, you haven't tried it here! Best duck we have had with no gamey taste. Dessert was an excellent crème brûlée. Nice ambiance, Hostess was outstanding, excellent pre-dinner Old Fashioned and glass of wine, but aside from that, what should have been an outstanding evening turned into a disaster due to incompetent staff, and a waste of $224, before tip. Our server Lilly, who told us she was relatively new, started out friendly and accommodating. It quickly went downhill. On the menu as an appetizer, 6 Jumbo Shrimp, $27. I asked for $27 how jumbo, she said huge, so we started with that. When it arrived, they looked identical to the ones we buy at Costco and Sam's Club, $19.97 for a 2 lb bag, cooked and shells removed. That didn't concern me, but what did was that there were only 5 shrimp. I wanted our 6th shrimp, 3 apiece. I brought to Lilly's attention, asked for the missing shrimp, and nothing. I brought it to her attention again, and she said she'd "ask a manager". A third time, it was getting close to the entrées arriving, so I inquired and she said she had not asked a manager. I told her I wanted it addressed. My wife ordered the salmon, menu price $30. Lilly asked if she wanted it as an entrée. My wife said yes, because she certainly didn't want it as an appetizer. What Lilly failed to share with her was that this is a little trick to add $13 to the price by adding rice, which my wife didn't want, and didn't eat (we had sufficient sides by ordering Fries ($14) and Brussels Sprouts ($12). I ordered the Ribeye, $73, Pittsburg Medium Rare. Entrées were not delivered at the same time. A surly employee walked up with my steak and was going to give it to my wife, I told him it was mine, and he literally DROPPED the plate in front of me and walked off as I asked for salt. When my wife's salmon arrived, I asked for salt. 15 minutes later, as my steak was getting cold, Lilly came by and I asked for salt. We finally received salt, and it would have no doubt been an outstanding steak, IF it were still hot. I ordered iced tea. Tea and water glass sat empty for nearly 20 minutes. When Lilly finally came by with a refill and we asked for the check, she asked if there would be anything else, and I said yes, THE SHRIMP?!?!?! She said the bill was being adjusted. I didn't want the check adjusted, I wanted the missing shrimp, so did she really say something to the manager, or is the manager as incompetent as she? 6 shrimp, $27, $4.50 each. The bill was reduced by $4.10, so the restaurant owes me 40 cents. Of course I don't care about the 40 cents, but it's the principle of the thing, and the entire evening could have been outstanding. We watched the server handling tables beside ours, and oh how we wished he had him. Not only would it have been a great evening for us, it would be a 5 star review here, and everywhere else I intend to share this post. read more

Jaden was an awesome host, the staff was super friendly, the food was absolutely incredible. My trout meal was 10/10 and everyone I was with highly enjoyed their meals. The oysters were some of the best and so fresh, perfectly cold. I also really enjoyed how fantastic the mignonette was the horseradish was shaved and so fresh, the wine we wanted wasn't available but what we got was fantastic. Dined here last night with my wife. Always been a favorite of ours & for some reason we have not been here in some time for no particular reason. Both of us had great meals. I normally get the hanger steak, but my wife did instead vs a different cut,of red meat and it was incredibly tender & juicy. You almost didn't need a knife to cut it. I ordered the duck meal. Not something I normally order but the one of the time I had it was here a few years ago and it was fantastic then and once again it did not disappoint. A few other times I have had duck it was outside of here at a formal event like a wedding, and it was greasy or swimming and some sort of a glaze. It was not greasy and honestly I'm not sure you could even tell it was duck, fantastic dish,. We shared a crème brûlée dessert, and it was amazing as well. I don't give out 5 star reviews very often yet our meals and dessert exceeded our expectations. Look forward to going back. I think the only constructive feedback I may have is it was fairly dark in here leaving us both to use our phones flashlight to read the menu. read more

I have always loved The Grill Room. The service has always been impeccable. I have always made a reservation and it's always been ready within 10-15 mins of the reservation, even if we arrive early. They have some rotating specials, but the entrees usually remain the same. I was there for my relationship 3 year anniversary. We were offered complimentary Prosecco or dessert- knowing the portion sizes we opted for the Prosecco. We each got a draught drink - me cider and my boyfriend an Austin street beer. We got a half dozen oysters (2 of each location/type) as our app which came with cocktail sauce, vinegar, and a ginger/horseradish combo. We gave each oyster a hit of lemon plus additional sauces we wanted. They really hit the spot. They all were fresh and delicious. It's a very expensive, romantic location with dim lit space for ambiance. They have bar seating, regular dining room seating, and a special 4-top bar seating by the kitchen. We were sat near the kitchen but at our own table. Our server was well informed on the menu. He was super accommodating and helpful. For entrees we got a bacon wrapped filet special and the hangar steak entree. Both were fantastic. The service was quick and awesome. The food and drinks were expensive but absolutely delicious. This is our second year in a row going here for our anniversary. It has not disappointed. It was our first night on our vacation in Portland and let's just say a lot of the restaurants we went to after we came here had a tough act to follow. We made a late reservation on OpenTable but came a little earlier, expecting that we may have had to wait, however we were able to get seated outside very quickly. Our server was very friendly and attentive, making great menu recommendations and was very engaging with us. We started with half a dozen oysters and their beef tartare. My fiancé loved her oysters and the beef tartare was amazing, the seasoning and the sauce for the tartare was on point. For our entrees, we ordered a NY strip, Filet mignon and three of their sides (lobster mashed potatoes, Brussel sprouts and bacon and a popover). Everything was cooked to perfection, they even had us cut into our steaks to make sure it was perfect. We cleaned every plate they gave us and we even had their delicious crème brûlée for dessert. This place is without question, Portland's top steakhouse. If you haven't been here before, you definitely need to come here for dinner. We spent over $150 per person and no matter how I look at it, it is not worth it. In conclusion I would say I've had a better steak for half the price. A cheese board which costed $50 wasn't that different than other restaurants. They can do a better job with plaiting as well. My partner's dish which included a steak and a lobster was OVERLOADED with mash potatoes which made it look like some sort of a soup and not very appealing. It is unfortunate. Event planners--ask for line item pricing when looking to host a group dinner at the Grill Room Annex. There is a 23% "administration" fee that is not disclosed on the menu packages and it does not include wait staff gratuity. Plan on a 40 to 50% gratuity/fee on top of the quoted room rental and food package, unless you want the wait staff to not receive a tip. This is not a 'no tip' restaurant, so the wait staff is expected to be partially compensated through the tipping process. The room is nice and the food was good (received an upcharge for requesting an appetizer from one of the lower cost packages and on the most expensive package no dessert is offered, so be prepared for an upcharge if you want dessert). read more
