I used to love this place. However, my last trip there was not good. I called ahead to ask about a product. They had it in stock. I asked for the price per pound (over phone) and was told they couldn't give me that number. It comes in a package a they didn't know how much was in the package. I drove and extra 40 miles on my trip to stop in. Right on the package it said 6 Oz. So it was $30 for 6 Oz. Way overpriced. But since I made the trip, I was going to splurge. I asked for another product and was told, I don't know. If we have it it will be out. So you work here and don't know your products? So I went to pay and the woman had trouble with her tap to pay. She told me I would have to use my card because she couldn't get it to work. She ask for help from her 3 associates that were close by. It was pouring rain, and the physical card was in the car. Then she stated there was a 3% charge to use my card. I left my items and walked out. I believe they have now become too big for their britches. They no longer care about thw customer....at all! When coming to the Pinconning area this is the cheese place to go to. I feel like they have the best selection and such a wide variety. Their store inside is large and has an open feeling. Plus, they cut the cheese right there for you at the counter. The staff is always extremely friendly and they provide great service.This is our favorite cheese place and always stop for us. Pinconning has been the Cheese capital of Michigan for over a hundred years. While other businesses have left the Cheese House stayed. Back in 1915 Dan Horn conceived the old fashioned Pinconning cheese which is still the pride of mid-Michigan. There's something about the way they age cheese that makes it taste better than store bought. As I went older and sharper the taste improved and the texture was definitely creamier. One of their more enviable practices is offering free samples. Most stores can't or just won't do it. It's great for me. I don't always remember what level of sharpness I like and it tends to vary from visit to visit, anyway. There are plenty of consignment products and supporting items like chips, crackers, jellies and pickled products...to name a few. Pretty cool place. Not as much cheese as you'd expect them to sell in a cheese house. I bought "dill string cheese"- pretty good! Was just dill on the outside of string cheese, but honestly was the best string cheese I've ever had. Much better than that kraft crap you'd get at grocery store. Big selection of pickles... everything from pickled egg to pickled mini corn. I went with hot dill pickled green beans- the jars said they were made in Ohio. Overall, cool place. We haven't seen this place before so it must be fairly new. We were so excited to check it out- and it didn't disappoint. Many varieties of cheese- and drumroll please.... They have caraway cheese! If you know, you know! It's so hard to find and so I grabbed a nice sized chunk along with some cheese curds of course! What was the cherry on the sundae, was they have a huge selection of chocolate treats- and they had dark chocolate covered marshmallows!! I bought one- and it was Devine! Thick dark chocolate- the good stuff too- on a soft marshmallow. What a nice treat! They have other items as well. It's a very clean store and the staff were friendly. Great prices as well. Me and the homies saw the billboard for THE Cheese house and we knew that it was destiny and we had to stop. let's just say it did not disappoint, the cheese was cheesing and vibes were vibing. the service was beyond incredible, some would even say cheeseirific. me and the boys are cheeseaholics and we purchased the smokey cheese curds. Lemme tell you what...these curds made my mouth wet! incredible flavor in the smokey curds reminded me of my famous grandfathers smoked raccoon tail! I thought I'd update my review since so many reviews here are greatly outdated- I stop here on each and every trip north and this week had a Ladies weekend with friends who had NEVER stopped here before so I insisted! This is just a fantasyland of cheese curds, spreads, chips/crackers/pretzels for dipping! And of course the wall of licorice, lol! (Literally every flavor of licorice!) We gathered up a small feast for the car, took the group selfie with the mouse and back in the road! I love this Cheese House!! My hubby and I usually try to stop here when we're in Michigan visiting his family to get delicious hunter sticks, cheese curds, various dips and cheeses and smoked fish. They offer a great, huge selection of meats/fish, cheeses and snacks, beverages, crackers and chips along with the well known Mackinaw Island fudge! On our last trip in September we stopped here and I purchased two mind-blowing cream cheese dips, pepperoni pizza and roasted red pepper dip along with hunter sticks. Unfortunately, we didn't have a chance to stop again before we flew home. I was pleasantly surprised when I found out they ship most items to many states! Today I was able to have wonderful flashbacks of our recent trip to Michigan when I received my order that included hunter sticks and both dips (surrounded by ice packs) that I was able to enjoy with Win Schuler's Garlic Snack Chips! Where do you find your employees? Regardless, you should send them back! The two young ladies working are SNOTS. You have a sign hanging right behind the register that mentions points, frequent shoppers, something to that affect. When I asked the young snot of employee what that was, first she ignored me, then when I asked again, she snapped "I have no idea" with a tone that clearly described how miserable her life must be! Not sure if you're aware....there's this little thing called a global pandemic going on. People are staying home, not traveling, not shopping. With fewer customers, I would hope that your miserable employees would appreciate the few customers that are shopping, clearly I am mistaken. I had about $120 rung up. The snot said nothing to me. She didn't great me, didn't answer my question regarding points, and then didn't ask for the amount rung up. She just stood there! So, after putting up with enough of her nonsense, I walked out leaving my purchase there on the counter for her to put away. There were no customers in the store, I was the only one there, throughout my 20 minute visit. The snotty ladies working clearly weren't overwhelmed by the work load....wonder if their full of their own rotten cheese. If you own this place, you might want to read some of your reviews, you're losing customers based on how your employees treat people. We'll shop elsewhere going north! read more

I consider myself a cheese curd expert, so when we stopped for gas next door and the sign said this place had fresh cheese curd, I had to stop. Unfortunately, it is not that fresh. Fresh cheese curd should squeak when you eat it. I asked the cashier if it squeaked and her response was "kinda sorta." Which means no. They do have a very large selection of cheese, snacks, etc but when you advertise fresh cheese curd, it should be FRESH. read more

I remember my big sister bringing me Pinconning cheese when she came home from college in Ann Arbor when I was in third grade. I know you can buy it in Meijer here, but I live on the east coast, so it is a bit nostalgic for me. It's not my favorite cheese, but I really like the medium Pinconning. It's $6.69/lb; the mild is slightly cheaper, but not as good (in my opinion). This cutesy cheese shop is not a tourist trap. It's a great place to buy Michigan goods. Honey, jams, and fudge made locally. Even beef jerky for the carnivores. This place is worth a ten minute pit stop. It's easy on/easy off I75. The Cheesehouse Cheese Shop is right off US-23/I-75 exit 181, at Pinconning, Michigan. I used to ask my husband as we passed, "Want to stop and get some Pinconning cheese?" Apparently, he thought I was joking, until the day I insisted we stop. And that is when he saw for himself that yes, they *do* sell Pinconning cheese in Pinconning, Michigan. Now he wants to stop every time we pass. "Do we need more cheese?" You can get your Pinconning cheese in mild, medium, sharp, extra sharp ... and they have other types of cheese, and things that go with cheese, such as sausage, crackers & wine. They also have unusual fruit preserves and candy. This place seems to be enjoying a resurgence. It looks more and more cared for each time I visit. They have a loyalty card program. For every $100 you spend, you get $10 off your next purchase. Since I spend about $25 every time I visit, every few months, it's worth sticking another card into my wallet. ~~~ HOT TIP: The ladies *try* to get your request right. They *try* to slice off the right amount of cheese. But then, they turn out to be wrong, and slice off another piece, and you end up with two thin slices, instead of one thick one. Hard to grate that! So just tell them how thick to cut the slice. They can handle that. Also watch for thin strands of cheesecloth in your cheese. read more

Horrible, rude staff. In the midst of a pandemic, with no one in the store, you would think the staff, who were as rotten as their cheese would, at a minimum would be nice, they weren't. Not a greeting, not an offer to help, not anything. The lady said NOTHING. When I asked her a question, no response. Not a thank you, NOTHING. I had higher hopes for this place. I am a huge fan of cheese and we still had a couple hours on the road so I thought it would be a perfect stop for a quick snack. The place looked a bit dingy to me. There were samples of some of the cheese spreads but they looked old and mostly empty, kind of off-putting. The person running the store was NOT friendly at all. We were the only people in there and were not greeted nor interacted with while in the store. We settled on a cheddar cheese dip and a box of bruschetta rounds (which were marked up to $5). This place is always a 'must stop' on our way up north. Good variety of cheeses, and their dips are great. Before I walk in, I always think I'm going to get some jerky, candy, a bunch of cheese and sausages. But, it's not cheap. I end up getting just enough for a couple of snack times during our vacation. The place, itself, is frozen in time. It always looks like they're about to do something, but lo and behold, a year later, it's exactly the same! It never changes... They have an excellent array of different cheeses and they will cut you samples of their aged cheeses even the 13 year old cheese which was very good. Their cheeses are very expensive but I don't really know what is expensive and what isn't so you can't go by me on this. I only gave this 3 stars because the staff wasn't all that friendly. I honestly have no idea what was wrong with the cheese we got from there today, but the sharp cheeae tasted more like a mix of mild cheddar with a dash of burnt gasoline between bites. I've had much better pinconning from WALMART of all places. For the price we paid I expected a good sharp cheese, not whatever this happens to be. read more

It's ok for cheeses and goodies on a road trip but watch for expired stuff....bought some licorice (had lots of flavors) but when we opened it, it was really tough and had a old waxy stale flavor. Meh. I like cheese, I'm just not in love with theirs. Jalapeño cheddar seemed like it wasn't in the cheese, just in the container.

The cheese selection appeared scarce as far as variety. However, what they did have to offer was phenomenal. The ladies were very friendly and educated us on the process. We were able to taste several different ages of cheddar and they were all great. We had a hard time settling on two. Some of their prices for wine and imported items were elevated but not super unreasonable. Will visit again at the very least just to stock up on some cheddar! read more

Although we expected a restaurant, all we saw was a cheese and "party" shop, without any seating. We bought a loaf of bread and some fresh cut cheese from a very friendly cheese monger. It made for a quick and inexpensive visit, but we ate in the car. In addition to cheese and curds, there were relishes and condiments, olives and pesto, beer, wines and a small selection of nonalcoholic beverages. There was jerky too. They had a few real surprises: Nathan's dill pickles and some smoked fishes and baklava! The bathrooms were under renovation, with 2 of 3 women's toilets out of commission and the third rather in need of some detergent. The men's rooms was primitive and under assault as well. So, restaurant -0- stars, cheese shop 3 stars and the bathrooms minus 2. Overall, because of the sweet and friendly woman who waited on us, 2 stars. read more

Our daughter had some Mild Pinconning cheese shipped to us here in Florida. We were so happy to receive it, and had some friends taste it. They agreed with us "it is delicious". When we come to Michigan we always have to stop by the Cheese House and purchase a lot of cheese to take home with us, (non ever makes it to Florida). Stay the same, you are doing everything right. A friend of mine spoke of a treat from her childhood - squeaky cheese curds. She said she couldn't find them anywhere. Driving I-75 I saw a sign for this place and it advertised cheese curds. So I stopped in. I asked one of the women if she knew what "squeaky cheese" was. She quickly cut a piece of cheese off a wheel from behind the counter for me to try. Immediately I knew this was the squeak my friend spoke of. But because my friend had specifically mentioned "curds", I asked about "curds". She told me that "curds" were what they use to make the squeaky cheese and assured me they were what I wanted. So I spent $20.00 on several packages of them, expecting them to taste and squeak like the cheese I sampled. When I got home I immediately opened one of the vacuum-sealed packages. To my great dismay, they didn't squeak at all. In fact, they were particularly creamy and had a flavor I immediately disliked. It wasn't even close to the cheese I tried off the wheel. Because I had no idea - I followed their advice and was greatly disappointed. Not only did I NOT get squeaky cheese curds, I spent $20.00 on something I didn't like and couldn't present as a gift to my friend. If the store was closer I would have gone back and demanded a refund. Very disappointed! read more

We stopped there in the evening on Tuesday as part of a bus group of 60 people. There was only on eperson working there. She was a young lady. I have worked in retail management for many years and have never seen anyone who performed as well as this young last did under stressful circumstances. The vast majority of the bus occupants bought something and not one complained about anything when they came back to the bus. This young lady kept her poise, was efficient and never showed any frustration. I have never been so impressed by anyone in such a situation. She is a credit to her employer. read more

Cheese is fabulous, but I have to knock the place because of the horrific restrooms. The out of order signs in the men's rooms look like they have been there for years. The one "working" urinal didn't flush and the stalls were beyond description. A sign on one of the sinks says to not flush diapers down the toilet or we'll be forced to close the bathrooms. Appears this sign is an excuse to not clean the bathrooms either. The building appears to be under some sort of remodel, but it has been for over two years. It's been a long standing family joke that we need to stop for cheese on the way home from up north. But I think the joke was on me this time. I will no longer be stopping there. read more
