Super friendly staff, lots of products in a well-organized space. Parking is easy for small cars and trucks+trailers. This place is a must-visit site, especially for those of us that grew up with Pinconning cheddar. I bought cheese curds - plain white, because that's me - and sprlurged on a lovely chunk of 15-year old cheddar. I feel the prices were reasonable, particularly for these generous-sized packages. This is a must stop!! They have the best cheese in the whole state with great prices!! My favorites are the Michigan cherry wine spread, and sharp cheddar blocks. Pirates of Saginaw bay is a great hot sauce brand they carry as well as a lot of other northern Michigan esthetic things. They've been around over 100 years and they don't distribute much which makes coming to the store that much special. You can park while hauling a trailer no problem, and they have a fun candy corner. 5/5! read more

Of course I stopped here while in Pinconning. All kinds of varieties of cheese and spreads and so much more. There was a souvenir section which I wandered in and found the cutest stuff. I unfortunately had to be practical and chsnnel my inner Marie Kondo and get items I could truly use and/or didn't have. The lake bag was tempting as well as a funny magnet. I chose a koozie which surprisingly I don't have one and some socks for my son which hoping don't get swiped my my lovely dogs. Wilson's was our first stop of the day, visiting the local cheese shops in Pinconning. On a Thursday late morning, it was not too crowded. Still, there were so many items in the store that it felt "busy" and a little confusing. If you like many choices, this is your place. You could spend all day examining all the varieties of cheese, in all shapes and sizes. In addition, they have candy galore and all sorts of various crackers, sauces, etc. We found the motel and leek cheese and stopped there; I'm a mushroom hunter and anything morel has my attention. We paired the cheese with flavorful flatbread crackers. What a delicious snack. A few bites is enough to satisfy. The rolls of Amish butter also caught my eye. I brought one home and we have been using it with a movie-night popcorn treat. Excellent! The people were helpful, our food choices are delicious, and we would return. The only point off is for the "crowded" and a bit commercial feel of the store itself. Takes away from what they do best: offer great cheese. read more

I enjoy cheese, but I'm not the biggest cheddar fan. HOWEVER thanks to the many samples, I found several cheddars I like! I'm leaving with my favorite, the 15-year aged cheddar. It's a dusty orange color, but it tastes so strong without being bitter. I also made use of the tourist part of the store to get some postcards and a fishing guide. I've been coming here for over 30 years. I love this place, it's an essential stop on the way to Kalkaska for my family. The cheese has gotten better and more interesting over time and they still have ice cream, candy and souvenirs. This time I got a Morel and Leek, smoked onion, bermuda onion and pierogi. I probably would have given this one three stars if I'd reviewed it from 2007, but I had an enjoyable trip in here this time. Everybody seemed to be in a good mood and were much warmer than I remember them being last trip. I bought some cheese for my friend which they vacuum sealed to keep it fresh since it would be a week or two before I got back from my trip to give it to her. I got some postcards and those little "Ice Cubes" chocolate candies that are so hard to find. I got hooked on them when I lived in Livonia over 40 years ago and the last time I think I found them was here at Wilsons 4 years ago! Wilson's makes some pretty spectacular cheese. I stopped in to get some of our favorite, the Morel and Leek cheese, and ended up with another great one--the Mango Fire Cheddar. Our family has been visiting Wilson's for about ten years now, and we've never experienced any poor service as has been mentioned in other reviews. On this visit, the Mango Fire was not one of the many cheeses that they had out as samples, but when I asked a very polite young worker how hot the cheese was, she promptly opened a fresh package from the display cooler and gave me a generous sample--and then chopped up the rest of the block for others to enjoy. Wilson's has literally dozens and dozens of cheese varieties, and an assortment of other local and specialty food and snack items. This place is absolutely worth your independent review if you happen to find yourself in Pinconning looking for a unique cheesy snack. read more

Welcome to Wilson's--Michigan's finest cheese shop. I highly recommend the pepper jack, sharp, and super sharp cheese. Or better yet, have Wilson's put together an award winning cheese tray for your next party (always a crowd pleaser!). Sample Wilson's aged cheese, my favorite is the six year old cheese. Fantastic cheese! Get the cheddar cheese 10 or 12 year aged cheese, delicious. Smoked gouda is also tasty. Get the "squeaky cheese" the day it's made if you can that's when it's at its squeakyest. After a couple days it looses its squeak. Elk jerky and other jerky meats too. Came back after being fine from Michigan for 8 years, LOVE this place. Gift shop as well which contains tshirts for avid fans as well as a selection of Michigan books, interesting preserves and preserved items. read more

I personally am not a giant fan of the 'pinconning' cheese but when my SO buys it, he buys it from here. They are also one of the few stores in town that sells liquor/beer. Everybody is always helpful and are happy to help you navigate the never ending shelves of maple syrup and wine. This place can get busy when there are events/sports going on in the summer. They are situated on the same block and share the same back yard with the park and community center. The store itself is your typical small town throwback. Nothing fancy, a few of the edges are worn but they keep everything they can in line. read more

A royal rip off and a creepy experience. 1) They don't make the Pinconning cheese, it's made in Marquette Michigan. Hint: no real cows in the vicinity. 2) To ship the cheese, it costs $12.95 for the postage, plus the ice pack and mylar bag; over $18 for shipping for 2 pounds of cheese. Harry & David don't charge that much. 3) None of the people who helped us were cheerful: never have I seen such a group of dour faces. Nobody died, they just wanted to take our money and send us on our way. This was so unlike the experiences we had in many other shops/restaurants in Michigan. My family has been stopping by Wilson's Cheese Shoppe on our way up north for over 40 years as another reviewer mentioned. We always look forward to the mild "squeaky" cheese as a special treat you can't get just anywhere. The past two holiday stops have been beyond disappointing. We end up throwing away the cheese that is now mushy, flavorless and not at all "squeaky. " What has happened to our favorite cheese? FANTASTIC!!! I'm from MI and now in the Seattle area. (GO SEAHAWKS!) Was in MI and of course to Wilson's I went. Back in the Pacific NW with Pinconning cheeses and perch from the Great Lakes. We have great cheese in the Pac NW but there is something very special about Wilson's cheese...service, quality of products, atmosphere of the shop. A friend of mine recommended this place because she used to visit it as a child. She remembered the mouse and cheese on top of the building. I visited once during the summer, but nobody working there tried to catch my attention, and I didn't buy anything, because I like the prices at Pinny Cheese House better, and Pinny's is closer to the highway when we're headed up and down along 23/75. There is good cheese and there is great cheese. I have enjoyed cheeses from New Zealand to Vermont, from Switzerland to Wisconsin. For my money, there is no final taste in nature than the the superb Pinconning cheeses sliced to order off giant wheels at Wilson's Cheese Shoppe in Pinconning. Michigan. Keith and Kim and the superb staff provide samples and savvy counsel in equal measure to ensure you can select the most palate-pleasing cheese from mild to super sharp to the Rolls-Royce of cheese--the 12-year aged. Some people think you can get the same Pinconning cheese at the local grocery store--after all, it is labeled as Pinconning cheese. Wrong! After you have savored Pinconning fresh off the wheel at Wilson's you will never be satisfied with the store-bought variety downstate. I have had packages shipped directly to friends in the east who had thought Vermont cheese was something special. They are now converts to Pinconning. I have spread the word to many friends downstate and they agree that nothing matches the freshness and taste, the genial service, they invariably get from Keith and Kim and the jovial ladies of Wilson's. I have been coming here since I was a kid. There was a brochure in a restaurant in Grayling. I saw the giant mouse holding the cheese wedge and I pestered my Grandfather until we stopped here. They have the best cheese products that I have found. Of course, the economy haschanged over the years and they've had to change too. They no longer have the baked goods and not as many gift items, but they still have a great deal. My favorite is medium or sharp Pinconning they make themselves. (Yes, they do make it themselves, just no longer in Pinconning. It is more cost effective to make it in the UP. They told me this themselves years ago). I like ALL the cheese spreads. They have a huge selection of smoked products, jams, tons of cracker choices, Murdick's Fudge, Britt family maple syrup products and much more. The staff is super courteous and friendly. Their cheese is far superior to the Cheese House by the freeway. I stopped and sampled, so I know what I'm talking about. PS - don't believe any of the bad reviews. I know a restaurant owner and the one or two bad reviews out of 100 are almost always ex employees that are disgruntled they got fired. As to the woman who said the new owners lied about not getting a letter - YES you can address something to the street address and it STILL goes to the PO Box until the new owners change it. To the question of bad cheese: They take the cheese out of the cooler or from the table and slice it right in front of you. So you can see for yourself if it is moldy or crumbly WHILE they are packing it up. (so I don't know how the customer can't see what is 2 feet in front of them) Perhaps an employee once or twice in 40 years got snarky - they're people too. After patronizing this shop for the past 40 years, we again stopped there on June 21, 2014 on our way to Mackinac. We purchased our usual slab of "squeaky" Mild and a slab of Medium Sharp. We then stopped in Tawas to have our little Cheese and Cracker picnic. Upon opening the cheeses, and trying to cut and eat them, we discovered they were HORRIBLE beyond belief and totally inedible. The Mild crumbled up into little balls, was NOT squeaky and tasted awful. The Medium Sharp was gooey and sticky, couldn't be cut up and also tasted horrinble!! Immediately upon our return home, I wrote them a letter and included the prices off the white paper wrappers. As of yesterday, I hadn't heard from them so I called. Today I got a return call from a female employee there telling me the business had been SOLD and she talked to the new owner and he told her to tell me I had to bring the cheese back within a week to get a refund and there was nothing he could do. She also said they never got the letter because it went to the P.O. Box of the old owner. REALLY???? I didn't use a P.O. Box #, I used a street address and you're telling me the post office wouldn't see that the shop got all of their mail???? LIES !!! My recommendation to you is: No matter how many times you've been there in the past, DO NOT go there now. The cheese is garbage and their customer service is even worse. If I could give them a negative rating, I would. Wouldn't you think that a new owner would jump through hoops to keep and maintain customers???? Not this guy!!! Pinconning cheese is some of the best cheese I've ever had, and I will continue to eat it, however, Wilson's Cheese Shoppe, is an absolute ripoff!! The smart@$$ behind the counter (aka the owner) should keep his comments to himself, and quit trying to hawk his grossly overpriced products (like the $12 beer coozie). This first thing he did when we walked in was start barking at my 63 yr old disabled friend about his oxygen tank and how HE wants it to sit in his cart! He yelled out to us that we should buy his sharpest pinconning that was $20.99/lb! Yet he admitted that it was TOO Expensive for him to put out any samples! My friend had some Super Sharp sliced from the deli counter, but when we ate it, realized it was definitely Not Super Sharp that he received but paid Super Sharp price! Check out his double-priced jams and jellies in the Smuckers jars and his $50 hoodies. The Rocky Road "fudge" he sells tastes the same consistency as those Little Debbie brownies, ok if you're desperate for a chocolate fix, but NOT Fudge. I went here recently with my mother, who was trying to put together her own gift basket. They were not helpful, in fact they were quite rude! They were trying to make her feel bad for asking questions. The lady that was helping us was the owner of the store! Then when my mom asked for some easter grass to fill in her gift basket, she received a rolling of the eyes and the comment, "you're going to have to pay for it!" I will never step foot in that store again or give them my business! I had heard the husband owner was rude, but I can't imagine being any more rude than the wife was! I have seen advertisements for Wilson's Cheese Shoppe for years and finally decided to visit it recently. The owner is a grump. I asked for a certain type of cheese when I was unable to locate it and the owner said "ask the girls". What girls? There was no one in sight. I finally found what I wanted on my own. While checking out I said to the owner I was glad I finally made it to his shop and he replied in a very gruff voice " well your here aren't you. I came once but not twice.
