One of my favorite places in Surf City. If you live cheese and like to try NEW cheeses, stop in here. Every year we stay in Surf city and every year I stop in at The Cheese Shoppe to taste some cheese and to buy some for the week. The staff here all seem to pretty well trained and they know their cheeses. It's also helps that they are always friendly and looking to help. The place is pretty open and well-laid out. There's also more than just cheese here so if you're looking to have a few charcuterie boards during your stay then you can get everything you need right here. This year's big find for me was a couple of amazing Bellavitano cheeses with different outside coatings...everyone loved them. Already looking forward to what I'll find next summer. read more

My favorite cheese is Leyden which can be hard to find. My wife and I were in the town of Leiden in the Netherlands in April and went into a cheese shop only to find that they were out of Leyden cheese! I went to the Cheese Shoppe in Surf City and they had two types of Leyden cheese. What a treat! read more

We decided to start the week off with a trip to the Cheese Shoppe, and we are so thankful we did. We often lament that in Europe a simple plate of cheese, meat and fruit can make for a transcendent meal, but that quality is hard to find in the US. You can find it at the Cheese Shoppe in Surf City, LBI! We got both the small charcuterie plate and some individual cheeses. They provided delicious snacks and meals for days! The people working there were super helpful and not condescending to people like us who don't know anything about cheese other than that we like cheeses when they are good! The place looks good after the renovation, but a massive fail on the owners part to not have prices on anything. Not at all. Not hidden, not missing on an item here or there, it was a choice not to have them on any items in store. If prices are subject to change even little chalkboard labels in front of each item would be an easy fix. Either way, to combat this, one employee was super kind and helped me go around the store and find out how much certain items were and give me some great recommendations. I didn't catch her name but she is a blessing! All employees there were super nice. But I'm sure you can't rely on that when it gets busy. Cheese was fantastic and i got a great assortment. Ok so it is a great shop. It has everything you need in a cheese shop and more. They really do a nice job with cheese and many things that go with it. I have been there a number of times now and really like the place. They have always been very nice in there as well. The only reason I gave four stars out of five is because I think they could do one thing better.... Cheese/meat plates. With the people on the island and the popularity of charcuterie I would think this would be a great business for them. I have gotten the cheese plate and it was ok and it had a 24 hour requirement on ordering. They can do better. They could go bigger.... I want to see that done right. If you are lookin for a cheese plate go to Forchette. They do a nice job but don't really give choices. Go here. You will love it. Just make your own cheese plate. read more

This place used to be great. New ownership changed things around and did continue with the tried and true ways of the old owners. The cheese spreads taste different (not as good), the way they have things setup is ridiculous, it's more of a gift shop than a cheese shop. What really stinks is nobody knows anything about cheese. Wish they didn't change things up, but I wish them the best. read more

Though we have lived her for 4 years, we have never stopped at this cheese shop until this summer. I was hooked my first visit. I love this cheese shop! It's our first stop on the island, two years in a row! We love all the variety of cheeses as well as jams, almonds, and other accompaniments to cheese. My family has been vacationing on this island for over 60 years and the Cheese Shoppe had always been a "must". This year we were a little shocked to see the changes. It seems very commercial now and they were out of some favorites. We were surprised to learn that their cheese spreads weren't made in house (we always thought they were). While I do like this place and I've e been here a number of times - I have issues with the older woman with the Dorothy Hamill haircut. I don't know if she's the owner or just an employee but I do know one thing - she's annoyed that people even come into the place. She's the most unfriendly, indifferent - invisible person I've ever come across when trying to purchase something. Just making eye contact is an impossible task. Within the first few hours of arriving on Long Beach Island, one of my family members will head over to The Cheese Shoppe. Always in need of snacking sustenance, we know just where to go. Along with some very boastful cheeses - combier, buttermilk blue, Prima Donna - they've also got delicious, housemade cheese spreads like garlic and herb white cheddar and chive and blue. But say, you're lactose intolerant, what to do? There's plenty in the form of hummus, honey mustards, camponatas and more. Even more decisions must be made when figuring dipping devices. Will it be baguettes, crackers, bagel crisps or wafers? It's easiest to just get it all or as much as you can carry. If you're ever stuck on what to make for dinner, they've got a good lot of fresh and packaged pastas and sauces. Also, peep the olive oils, spreads, and balsamics. read more

Tonight 5 of my friends and I had the most fabulous time at a private cheese and wine pairing class. Kaycee immediately made us feel incredibly comfortable in what otherwise could have been and intimidating activity. She was so informative and gave us the opportunity to try seven different cheeses (also the jams and honey were out of this world)-- she guided us but still encouraged us to decide for ourselves what we liked. We brought 1 white 1 rosé and 1 red wine-- Kaycee advised to bring a variety so she could give us the best tasting experience. We each had plenty of cheese to try and brought home many left overs. This was seriously the highlight of our weekend and we couldn't stop taking about how much fun we had! Thank you so much Kaycee! I'd highly recommend doing a wine/cheese class! read more

I have visited the cheese shoppe twice and will most likely be back again on this vaca. The coffee they sell is wonderful. Surf City and LBI Blend being my favorite. Surf City is the more robust. LBI very smooth no bitter taste and great aroma. There is an ample selection of cheeses, crackers, rubs, dips, jellies, pastas, and various other items for the gourmand. Try the Cheddar Champagne cheese great with Carr crakers. Go there you will not be disappointed. read more

The owner is very sweet and can make several suggestions on putting together a wonderful snack tray or meal combo with her various items. OMG, if you love cheese you must visit! I visited everyday I was on LBI. First, to check it out...it was recommended by a good friend. Bought some cheese to enjoy on the beach, yum! Second, to pick up a few small gifts for my foodie friends at home and third, to get cheese for our cooler to take home, yum again! Owner very knowledgable and her products are varied and delicious. We have been going here since this opened 20/30 years ago just down the street from where we stay. Never been disappointed. Cheese is the main item but there are a LOT of other foods there. Although it's a small shop, it is full of delicious items, mostly for cocktail hour but some to help with dinner (spices, etc). Casey the owner has a wonderful palate so the quality of the items are really good. She often has items that you can't find anywhere else. This year's favs are the artichoke hearts and the chocolate bar with sea salt along with some of the good olive oils. This is also a good place for gift baskets/bags they'll put together for you. I debated on whether this is a 4 or 5 star store and realized that for what they are, this is as good as it gets. Can't think of anything lacking. read more
