My husband and I stayed here for our anniversary. It was our first time. We loved the ambiance and decor. We had dinner at Basso which was amazing. The breakfast at the hotel was good as well. However, we were extremely disappointed with the cleanliness of our room. We paid over $300 for the room and were shocked at how filthy it was. We didn't even want to cover up with the bedding. Short story: almost everything we touched while sitting in the waiting area was dirty, it looked like they "spot cleaned" our room (leaving hair and dust in the bathroom and some kind of white grin on the bathroom door), and the bed had dark red stains on the sheet and comforter. Also, anybody can use the elevator in the parking garage to get up to the room floors in the hotel - which left us feeling super unsafe. The woman at the front desk was not the most hospitable. After we checked in and got to our room, with all the grossness that held, the man at the front desk was happy to help change the sheets and comforter for us after he wasn't able to contact the housekeeping crew; but then he stood in the foyer and talked to another staff member for at least 15 minutes. Then took another 15 minutes or so to change the bedding. While waiting in the sitting area by the fireplace (which was awesome, English country themed) more staff folks stood around in the foyer using profane language and not working. I'm sure they were just on break, or off duty, and they weren't just standing around wasting time - but with the level of uncleanliness that the sitting area had, I would think paid employees would have a better way to spend their time, maybe by cleaning the place up a bit. I encountered a total of 6 employees that were just standing around in the foyer, and one guy who kept walking back and forth through the sitting area - at least he was trying to look busy. Overall: unless there is a huge change in management or those who are in charge of the staff, and the quality of cleanliness isn't raised significantly, I'll never try starting at the Cheshire again. Spend the extra $40 and stay somewhere nice; I recommend the Last Hotel. read more

Stayed here for a work retreat. Room was on executive floor and loved the details with each room being dedicated to a British writer or playwright. I got the Daphne du Maurier room. Simple room, albeit bigger than a regular room. Stand up glass shower, no bath, armchair and a small desk. Big bed, fairly comfortable. Windows are pretty stained glass and can open with no screen. One of the windows unfortunately had a crack and was taped up. Overall the room was nice but dated. Interior of the entire property is amazing. I enjoyed just walking around and looking at everything. Fox & Hound is a small snug off of the main entrance. Super dark and cozy, small menu but my kiddo wouldn't have wanted to eat anything so we went elsewhere. I would've loved to try the fish and chips. Had our business meeting in a cabana by the pool and that was fun! I wish there would've been a server to get us drinks and food. They would've been tipped well because it's much needed! I think the Fox & Hound opened around 3:00 but by that time we went off property again for lunch. Breakfast both mornings was great. Pastries, donuts, pre made scrambled eggs, sausage, potatoes, yogurt and lots of fresh fruit. I'm glad I stayed here but might pick somewhere different next time. The staff was very rude to us. The manager locked us out on the pool and then became confrontational with us. We booked for 3 nights. We were unable to come for the first night.And the manager just canceled our reservation. Even though I paid for it, she rented my room to somebody else and refused to give me a refund. The experience starts off mediocre and only deteriorated. Front desk personnel was not available during check in and the process was so quick, I was dismissed with my room keys with questions unanswered in regards to parking and the building. Finally locating parking, I was left wandering in an attempt to access the hotel. An employee entering for a shift kindly guided us and was extremely polite, alleviating some frustrations. The interior has wonderful character with an obvious need for upkeep. The elevators shake, the walls are dinged, scuffed and show neglect. Inspecting the room went from a blasé to sadness. Seat cushions are of a cheap material and torn. The remote did not work. You cannot adjust the temperature in the room, despite a thermostat. The pillows were folded into the cases to look full but clear they folded the pillows in half to hide the fact they're flat as a pancake. Preparing for event showed hair on the walls of the shower, a drain which was filthy with hair and objects you'd believe to be obvious to see and the cloth shower curtain with mold. All said items would be blazingly apparent to locate and required no difficult inspection. Times only got worse. Doors between rooms and walls allow for you to openly hear persons in the next room. Doors slam loud enough to awake you from any slumber and other guest patrons were louder than ever experienced. Children running through the hallways prior to 0700. An experience I will never attempt again. Basso's restaurant next door, SUPERB! There's good food and drink if you're here. read more

Recently, we lost power at home with storms. I can't handle the heat so, after a couple of rough nights, I booked a room at The Cheshire Inn. I am SO happy I did! Everyone I came into contact with was lovely - the front desk, the bartender (Jill? - Hi! You are terrific!), housekeeping. Everyone great. Rooms are clean and welcoming. Pool is great fun! Everyone joins in! Food at Fox and Hounds is really good. Breakfast says continental but includes more -scrambled eggs, sausage, really nice fruit. And you are walking distance from other eateries should you wish. I love this cozy place. Dare I say, with lightning and winds tonight, I may be back if my lights go out. read more

I stayed at The Cheshire Inn Monday night. Shout out to Kevin, my host at the front desk, who put me in a great room on the 2nd floor, really almost a suite. Room was nice and clean. I was hungry so I dropped down to the nice Basso restaurant, steps away from the Inn (across the parking lot). I had an excellent dinner...house made pasta, excellent salad, great friendly service...both the Inn and Basso are regular stops for me. Recommended! oh, breakfast at Cheshire has greatly improved after a lull during Covid. Much nicer and almost back to where it was a couple of years ago. read more

What a lovely place! My family and I stayed for 4 nights during our vacation. We thoroughly enjoyed our time at the hotel as much as our activities in the city. If you're looking for a perfectly pristine modern hotel, this isn't it. Instead, it's an old hotel that is themed to make it seem even older. It's got creaky doors and and floors and has been well loved by many guests. Our room was clean, and although it couldn't be cleaned daily due to covid, we were provided any towels and toiletries we requested right away at the front desk. Every room has a leaded glass window. Would have been nice to have a fridge or microwave, but we stayed in a basic room and I'm sure suites had more. As for atmosphere, the Cheshire has it in spades. Each room is named for a famous British author or poet. Portraits and old framed pictures, texts, and documents line the walls. So much fun to wander around and see who you recognize. The Cheshire is also a great place for families! My kids were never made to feel unwelcome or like they couldn't act like (well behaved) kids. The pool area is great with lots of places to lounge. A huge mix of ages, but everyone seemed comfortable. Another great thing for kids is the treasure hunt! Ask at the front desk for a kid's or adult version (we tackled both!) and wander around looking for clues. We loved that they were encouraged to explore! Food- breakfast was decent every morning with consistent items such as cereal, fresh fruit, yogurt, juice, coffee, and pastries. There was also something extra each day like bacon or sausage and eggs. The breakfast area inside and out is lovely. We didn't get to try either of the restaurants, but the pub is full of character, good food, good drinks, and a wonderful bartender. Finally, the staff. We didn't interact at length with anyone besides said bartender, but EVERY interaction we had with any and all staff was pleasant- from housekeeping to front desk. They were quick to help us, smiled often, and congratulated the kids after the treasure hunt. All in all, the Cheshire was the perfect place to land for our trip. This review is written with consideration of the current COVID-19 restrictions, as well as the current political climate, as my stay was very close to the US election. There is not one thing I can give a positive review on. My husband booked us this hotel for a single night during a cross-country move in which we were driving. I was VERY excited about this stay because the architecture of the building was adorable! And driving through the neighborhoods leading up to the hotel was beautiful, just a generally beautiful location. Once we arrived at the hotel, my tune changed. Basically, this is a motel 6 with a theme. The building was falling apart. It does not appear to be maintained at all. The cords and outlets in my room were all dusty and none of the outlets that were available worked, except for the ones on the bedside table. My room came with none of the amenities I was promised in my booking. Due to Covid, the on-site restaurant was closed - which is fine. We expected that. They did have milk, juice, and individually wrapped pastries and cereal available for breakfast free of charge which was nice, but for me, a pass. Lights in my room didn't work, the floor was sticky in my room, and I was honestly concerned about the treatment I would get when I called down to the desk, that I didn't call to ask any questions. The remote to the TV was gunky, and the piece that goes over the batteries was falling off. The view was okay and they had an on site Starbucks which was nice. My husband asked a question about the room at check in and the man behind the counter first ignored him, and my husband asked again, and the guy said he didn't know anything about our room. Here's what really earned the Cheshire the 2 star review - customer service wasn't just non-existent, it was aggressive and rude. They ignored us and walked away any time we asked a question, in the multiple times I came down during my stay, there was no one at the desk. Even when I went to check out, there was no one at the desk. I stood there for what must have been 10-15 minutes until a woman poked her head out and asked, very rudely, "is there a problem? Because you need to drop your card into that box?" I asked if I could get a receipt of my charges and she said no and went back into whatever room she came from. At that point I just dropped my card in the box and left because staff had made it clear since the moment I arrived that I wasn't welcome there, and that simply doing their jobs was a bother. I could not leave that "hotel" fast enough. Not one member of staff has any business working in the hospitality industry. I don't know how it's rated as a 4 star hotel. Honestly. They must know a guy. This hotel is a shanty at best and the staff has no concept of hospitality. I would have loved to enjoy my stay. I love this place. It is a "themed" hotel, with unique Old World charm. If that sounds fun to you, you'll enjoy your stay. I feel like all of the bad reviews came from people who just didn't appreciate the theme. But my experience was nothing short of perfection. There are multiple fantastic restaurants and bars on the property, and a terrific breakfast served every morning. The staff has always been attentive and friendly to me. I've stayed in the Sherlock Holmes room and the Lord Byron room, and both beds were comfy. I look forward to staying at The Cheshire again whenever I'm back in St. Louis. read more

When asked why not, the front desk clerk stared at my husband like he had 3 heads, and then said you have to ask for that service the night before. I recently visited the Saint Louis area for business and stayed here for a night. At first glance I wasn't impressed not to mention the first room I was given wasn't the cleanest so I ended up switching to a cleaner room and that one was a lot better then the first one. The hotel is a little dated and in my opinion housekeeping needs to pay more attention to the rooms. The atmosphere was that of an old British castle and was quite nice. The front desk staff were friendly and very helpful especially Roxie and Spencer. The beds were comfortable and I really enjoyed watching old nineteen fifties movies all night on the flat screen T.V. Which was provided in the room. The area the hotel is in wasn't too bad but I would be a little weary of it at night as it was very close to downtown and there were a few sketchy people around after dark. Overall I would stay here again and even recommend this place to anyone who is looking for a cozy, affordable and friendly place to stay for a night or two. Thanks Saint Louis!! read more

Disappointed. This hotel has so much potential. It is in a prime location. We chose The Cheshire because we had stayed in a hotel in another city with a very similar vibe, and it was one of the best hotel experiences of our lives. The staff was friendly, but you could tell that maybe they are being overworked and overwhelmed. We would catch little bits of their conversations stating as much. The breakfast attendant seemed frustrated when there were multiple guests waiting for coffee one morning. Our room was humid, dusty, and warm. It never cooled down. We told the front desk about it and they told us that maintenance fixed the issue. They did not. With the AC on the lowest setting, it was still always over 75 degrees in the room. We stayed three nights and we were miserable every night when it came time to go to sleep. Our room was uncomfortably warm. We were sweating. The carpet is filthy. One of my children didn't wear her slippers a couple of times while running around the room and the bottoms of her feet were black with dirt. There was dust on the headboards and on the surfaces around the room. The shower water pressure is poor. You have to give a 24 hour notice if you'd like housekeeping services. We were able to run down to the front desk and grab extra towels when we needed them. The pool area was dirty. There was vomit on a chair cushion, and the pool was full of leaves. Having to pay for parking was a surprise. $10 a night. They don't take your car information or give you a parking pass, so I'm not sure how they even track who pays to park. I'm giving three stars because of the sheer potential this location has. If they put some money into some improvements like deep cleaning, carpet replacement, and various other things, this location would reflect the 4 stars that it currently claims. Unfortunately, at present, it is not what it states to be, nor is it worth the prices they are charging. I'm really hopeful that they will make improvements so that we may try it again in the future. read more

I do not like to give negative reviews but the Cheshire is pricy and it seems appropriate. The desk staff were very nice and we have always wanted to stay at the Cheshire, but we're very disappointed. The room was semi-clean, the headboard was flaking on my husband and it had the handprints of former guests on it. Also, the TV had no sound. After calling the desk they did come and check and bring us another. The original was screwed to the stand and it's hard to believe there wasn't knowledge of the TV being broken. Finally, I realized as we arrived that our room didn't have a tub. Baths are my favorite thing. I was ready to upgrade for a room with a tub but I was led to believe there was in fact a fub in our room. No tub. However, if that had been all, I wouldn't write this. Wanted to love this place and I have to say that the atmosphere is great in terms of theme and history but it is literally filthy (why did I wait to look at reviews until AFTER we stayed?) and WAY overpriced for the room and service. The guys at the front desk were pretty uninvested and unhelpful. Just seemed like they were ready to clock out and go home. Whoever does their housekeeping is really missing the doors, floors, walls, corners, casings, etc etc. Just really dirty. It's a shame because this is such a cool old hotel, but again, SO overpriced and not to mention $10 day for parking. Will be staying elsewhere for the money and cleanliness. read more

Stayed in the James Bond suite. After looking at the previous reviews, was scared as to what we were getting into. Service was meh. Took forever for our room to be ready for check in. The pool was dirty and I felt like there were non guests using it. Our room seemed clean on first inspection, but then the ants appeared. We left ASAP in the morning. Cleanliness is an issue here. I stayed in room 215, the "Songs of Innocence" room. Things seem to be covered up or blatantly dirty. Towels stained, bathrobe dirty, dusty floors, and stains all over the furniture! My bed has what appears to be blood stains- very unacceptable. Who knows if my sheets were even washed? This is a budget hotel pretending to be nice. So overpriced for what you get. The rooms are filthy - we had mold growing on the shower curtain, the walls, and the ceiling. Air conditioning worked intermittently and smelled musty. Housekeeping has to be requested 24 hours in advance, but they don't tell you this. This hotel is a super unique, British-themed hotel. It has 3 onsite restaurants and a full sized Starbucks. We only stayed one night as we were in town for a concert, so we didn't utilize too much. They do have free bike rentals though which is really cool, so we were able to go for a ride around Forest Park. The complaints though are the noise. You can hear EVERYTHING from the other rooms, the road, etc. Additionally, the bathroom, which is small, only has a timed light feature which stays on for like 15 minutes after you exit without the ability to turn it off. This is annoying when you wake up in the middle of the night to go pee. read more

We have lived in STL all our lives and looked forward to a weekend getaway at this iconic hotel. We were so sad and disappointed when we checked in to our very expensive suite. It was very very dirty, very run down, antiquated, dingy and smelled strongly of weed. The furniture was old and broken down. We looked around for 2 minutes and decided to check out. Cute theme of Ye Olde Englishee stuffe. Beds were nice. Staff was pleasant. But it stopped there. The pool was closed even though it was easily in the upper 80s outside. The "suite" we payed for didn't have room for our ten year old son even though we explicitly requested a room with both a queen and a single bed. They downgraded us to a double queen room without rebating the difference. Worst of all, The breakfast just sucked. I can't believe the hotel thinks this is acceptable. It's supposed to be served until 10 but both days by the time I got there at 9 they had just stopped making hot food. Honestly the desk staff would say that there are fresh supplies coming and when I asked kitchen staff they told me they had stopped cooking. There simply wasn't enough food for the number of guests in the hotel. There wasn't enough kitchen staff to deal with the volume. They were out of silverware. Out of bread for toast. Out of bacon. I mixed it up a bit on a recent trip to STL and stayed at The Cheshire instead of downtown... The Cheshire is an older hotel (dating back to the 1920s), but much more charming than some of the large chains I've stayed at in the past. It's got an authentic British pub feel to it and recently underwent some major renovations from what I gather. I had a very pleasant stay, albeit a quick one - just one night. I found the hotel to be centrally located and easy to access. The staff was friendly enough, the room was clean, the bed was comfortable, there was free wifi, and there were Aveda toiletries in the bathroom! Best of all, the moderate room rate included a pretty decent continental breakfast in the morning and a couple of bottles of water in my room too! I stayed in the Mark Twain room, which was very pleasant. There appears to be all kinds of novelty suites available upon request as well. If you're looking for a non-corporate chain hotel with some character, The Cheshire is A-OK in my book! read more

On a scale of 1 to 10, I would give the Cheshire an 11. My husband and I were celebrating our anniversary + medical residency graduation. The Chase Park Plaza was booked so we landed on the Cheshire. WE LUCKED OUT! The Cheshire was truly amazing. The front desk staff is incredible. They knew we were celebrating a special occasion and since they have some extra availability, they upgraded us to the Romeo and Juliet Suite. Our room was beautifully appointed with a coffee maker inside, free waters, a large soaking tub, and a lush king sized bed. We enjoyed all of the nice touches like free Kaldi's (delicious local roaster) coffee, Danish and fruit breakfast and board games in the lobby. The weather was rainy so we didn't get to enjoy cocktails by the pool. The restaurant was also a lot of fun! I used to work at Wash U and casually advised parents all of the time on where to stay when in town. I used to say, The Chase and the Ritz are lovely and if they are full, the Cheshire is also a good option. What I should have said is, "the Cheshire is wonderful! And if it's full, look at the Ritz or Chase". You can't beat the Clayton location, great service, beautiful rooms and nice dining options!!! read more

The Cheshire is my favourite St. Louis landmark. When my husband and I were dating, it was the first hotel stay we had together. It was June, and I wanted to show Chris a great time, so I booked a room. We went to the zoo and then checked in. We decided to make use of the pool as it was such a beautiful, hot day. We had such a nice time out there. We were able to order drinks (or food if we so chose) poolside and hang out in the water. We had such a nice stay, but as others have mentioned, we also had issue with the posters on the bed. Both of us managed to bang our legs at least once a piece. While we were staying there the first time, we decided to check-out the Upstairs Ballroom as a possible venue for our wedding reception. We fell in love immediately. The night of our first stay, we went to Fox and Hounds for a drink and then down to Basso to meet some of the Yelper's for a little Happy Hour to meet Chris. Several of us stayed after Happy Hour and enjoyed dinner there as well. Everything was perfect. We have booked our reception to be held at the Upstairs, and we spent our wedding night at the hotel in the Treasure Island novelty suite. We were treated so well. The entire property bend over backwards to make us feel so special on our Big Day. The fireplace had been switched on before we arrived into the suite and everything was so cozy and comfortable. The bed was big and comfortable. The tub was luxurious. The sitting area was beautiful. It was all we'd envisioned and more. As we had to run off to catch a train to Chicago on our first visit, we grabbed a couple things and ran, but on the day after we wed, we sat down and enjoyed the breakfast. Everything was great. Much nicer than many hotels I've stayed at. Next summer, we'll be staying in the Romeo and Juliet novelty suite, which has an entrance that leads directly to the pool. We'll be loving that! Can't wait to go back. Even if you live locally, take your partner and stay here for a night or two. You won't regret it. read more

We stayed there two nights in April (4-6). While the sheets on the comfy bed were clean, the room was horribly dusty/furry (white dog hair had collected in the corners from a previous visitor) and the air vent was filthy (probably the source of the dust)! We were traveling with a ten-month-old who walks a little and crawls, so I called housekeeping right away. To their credit, they did come & vacuum so my little one wasn't covered in dog hair from playing on the floor. The other irksome thing of note was that the restaurant directly below our room (run by the hotel) was noisy with music past ten p.m. I was glad I brought earplugs for me & white noise machine for the baby! Breakfast was nice, served continental style, although they predictably ran out of coffee at several intervals because the coffee urn is stylish but too small for the number of guests. Kind of a fitting metaphor for the place, really: all style, not enough substance & thoughtful care for guests. I felt like we really paid just for the breakfasts, the interesting decor, and the great location! They even charged us for parking in their garage, which I nearly argued with them, as no other hotel I've stayed in has ever done that to paying guests. But we had an impatient baby fussing to go, so that battle wasn't worth our desire to get home quickly. But back to the big positive: The location is awesome! Forest Park is an easy walk. We did the whole St Louis Zoo there for free since we walked in, & the Cheshire gave us free passes that got us into the Children's Zoo and a few other neat exhibits. Father up the block is the Delmar Loop (nearly walking distance if we had a more patient baby); the Loop is a place full of neat shops & restaurants. Then to the southeast of the hotel is The Hill, an Italian settlement of St. Louis full of great pasta, pizza, and gelato spots. Yum! For convenient navigation, the Cheshire has it made from its ideal situation. In summary, I love St. Louis, and not only because one of my favorite people in the entire world lives there. And as much as I love St. Louis, I would return even JUST to have the opportunity to stay in this hotel again. Yes, that's how much I loved it. PROS: *The staff: Beyond amazing, patient and helpful at all times. My teenage daughter was very ill during our visit. Every evening the front desk staff would heat her cornbag in their microwave with a smile. Every day, upon returning from our adventures, we were warmly greeted like returning friends or family. *The atmosphere: Welcoming and relaxing. We felt transported to 1920s England, with all the charm and attention to detail that you would expect. *Breakfast: Get there early for the puff pastries, fresh fruit and a variety of teas and coffees. We'd go down as soon as we were dressed (by 8:00) and were frequently the only ones there, the food freshly laid out. We'd pick a corner table with a custom wooden puzzle featuring a photo of the hotel, enjoy our delightful pastries and coffee. I love the unique packaging of the teas. Just could not get enough of them (see photo). *Treasure hunt: We did the children's hunt, a great way to explore the hotel and have some fun. Be sure to set aside a little time for it! *Bed: Sooooo comfy!! And it's easy to open the window (no screens!) and enjoy the fresh night air. We were there in March and love it cool, so slept with the window open every night. I've seen others state their room was dirty. I found our room to be perfectly clean and comfortable. CONS: *The smell: When we entered the hotel on our first day, there was a smell (bug spray? Cleaning spray??) which did put me off. It was a bit musty...hard to describe. I don't know if that's a typical issue. After a day or two it either faded or became accustomed to it. I only mention it as the owners should be aware and it's probably something that a bit of incense could remedy. *The bathroom door: I never understand why some establishments insert a translucent piece of glass into the bathroom door, causing the entire room to be lit up in the middle of the night when someone uses the bathroom. Fortunately, I was able to maneuver in the bathroom without the light in order to not wake my daughter, but would love to have the glass covered with cloth or removed altogether. read more

Our first time staying at this hotel and sorry it was very disappointing. The rooms were dirty, the towels were threadbare. The upholstered headboards had holes and the sheets were terrible. However, the staff was cordial and friendly. Not planning a visit back anytime soon read more
