I visited Chicken Barn today, my first time back in a few months since the new owners took over. My last visit was great, but this one fell short. The staff, as always, were friendly and attentive. I ordered the regular dark meat chicken, and my coworker got the nuggets. Both were disappointingly dry and lacked the flavor they used to have. My macaroni salad was excellent, but my friend's mac and cheese was underwhelming. The potatoes were solid, though. I'll give it one more shot--maybe the cook was just having an off day. read more

I would give 5 stars since the service is ALWAYS very friendly, courteous and professional and the food is always good. Today was no exception, Madison M was so pleasant and kind. I ordered the grilled chicken Caesar salad wrap. It Was disgusting because the chicken was charred and burnt so the whole wrap just tasted like burnt charred chicken. I called in and spoke to the general manager, Sarah. She assured me that I could come in whenever and have it remade and that she had my name written down in a book. I also kept my receipt just in case. When I tried to go in to get it replaced, Sarah was not working and the man working, I believe his name was Brandon, basically accused me of lying and told me that I could not get it replaced because it wasn't within 48 hours when the manager Sarah never said anything about coming in within 48 hours. I live 30 minutes away so it's not that easy for me to travel 30 minutes out of my way to get a damn wrap. Never felt so disrespected. Like I need to lie about a wrap to try to get a free lunch. Drive-thru taken. 2 charbroiled chicken sandwiches ordered with hot sauce and bbq sauce on the side. The line moved at a medium pace. The worker was kind and asked if it was okay to wait. The chicken was going to take 6 minutes. That wasn't a problem. Offered and gave a diet drink while waiting. That was nice. A while later, much longer than 6 minutes, just went in and that was just the right time. Just finished. I had heard from students for years that this was a good option for fast food. Before the pandemic, I had tried their drive through and received some rather dry, cold chicken tenders. Meh. Recently I decided to give them another try. My family walked in, and the restaurant was empty at dinner time, and you couldn't smell any chicken...in a tiny chicken restaurant? Had pleasant memories with my father taking me to Chicken Barn during my youth, (especially when there used to be a Foster Farms on Geer Rd in Turlock back in 2002! I don't think I'll ever return to this location. The Oakdale location was much better until it got shut down. The chicken nuggets are not good anymore. Haven't been to chicken barn in years! Was in Modesto and decided to go by there, it use to be so good! The chicken nuggets were good but the spuds were so small and thin and flavorless! Basically is was a thin fry with a ton of breading and no flavor. I remember the spuds being the best part of the meal now they are the worst. I miss the big fat potato spuds. I paid close to $30 for the 10 piece chicken meal and it was def not worth it. Would not make the trip to chicken barn if i was in the area again, i wish i could get my money back. read more

Chicken Barn on McHenry in Modesto Ca is not somewhere I would recommend ANYONE to eat at. I had ordered a 2 pc dark chicken combo and received this. My chicken was raw, not even undercooked. I've been going to Chicken Barn for 40+ years. I worked there as a teenager when it was run by Foster Farms. I've eaten there literally at least 500 times over the years. I've told anyone that tries to mention Chick Fil-A in the same sentence as Chicken Barn, that they are in fact, insane. After moving nearly 3,000 miles away, one of our first restaurant visits when we come back to Modesto is always Chicken Barn; Sometimes 2-3X in a week. The quality in all these years has always been pretty high and the prices consistent with the local economy. We returned to Modesto today to find out that the business has apparently been sold and the Oakdale Rd location closed. We went to the McHenry location and immediately noticed that the prices have been raised quite substantially. We ordered 3 Nugget Meals ( Two 7 Pc and One 5 Pc), 20 Pcs ala carte nuggets, and a side of spuds. I was completely shocked when the total cost was $76.88! The potato salad has been changed from the homemade version to a corporate (Sysco) red potato salad. The Mustard sauce is no longer "homemade" and just a cheap, bottled sauce. Our nuggets were definitely not fresh and $4.50 for a small order of spuds seems a little high. So for a family of 4, we spent nearly $20 a person for chicken nuggets and some potatoes?!? The prices for a fast food restaurant is outrageous for any city, but especially Modesto! Chicken Barn has lost a lifelong customer. read more

Service You never are greeted by a non-friendly face. Everyone is always smiling and nice even when they are slammed. I am a regular, many of the staff know my name and order with modifications. The Food You will NEVER find a better chicken nugget, spuds or biscuit anywhere. I'm salivating just writing about them. They chicken and chicken sandwiches are also equally amazing!!! Ownership The new owners have brought life back into the store, quality back into the food and a better level of customer service than ever before. Prior to my visit on 4/25/24, I loved their chicken. This was one of my favorite places when I lived in Stockton. I would drive to Modesto just to eat there! I went to the restaurant on 4/25/24 and ordered the Thursday special (3 chicken wings, spuds and a drink). Arrived about 7:00 on Saturday Night 03/09/24 and it was packed with customers, even the drive-thru. I guess they close early at 7:30 on Saturday. The poor employees were working so hard to try and fill all the orders as they were running low on some items. "Summer" , who I assumed was the manager on duty kept cool and calm and processed the orders super quickly considering the circumstances. The employees were also very polite and friendly. The Chicken Barn in my opinion is definitely a step up from KFC and Churchill's. My proof will be when you bite into the perfectly seasoned, grease covered, crispy chicken skin and reward your taste buds with the burst of moist white chicken meat. Nothing else is needed. Simply fried chicken at its best. I am sure any chicken would be honored to end up at the Chicken Barn. As they say, you get what you pay for and you definitely get what you pay for here!! Quality, amazing! Size of the nuggets for the price, worth it! If you want cheap fast food processed nuggets, go to McDonald's. Here you get quality, whole breast pieces that are breaded and fried to perfection. They are carrying on the Foster Farms tradition and doing it proud. (If you grew up in the area, you know what I'm talking about.) I ordered the filled sandwich meal and my chicken was still pink inside. The bread falls apart as soon as you pick it up so it's impossible to hold together as a sandwich. I have gone here twice. I was reluctant to go the first time because it's fried chicken (although I like it), I would rather eat healthier; and I would also like my parents to eat healthier. One of my buddies in between these two trips told me to give it another shot. He actually just was trying to convince me to go instead of Chik-a-filet, but I decided to go to Habit instead. But he did remove the prejudice in my head that i had for this place. Since my parents keep trying to get me to go here, when they came into town I decided to give it another shot when they strolled into town. First time coming here the chicken just wasn't good. The BBQ sauce was too ketchup-ie and the spuds had too much potato and not enough breading. The second time I came here however, everything was much better (for the record both time I got the chicken nuggets). The nuggets were nice and tender. They were juicy and you could see the moisture whisking out of the breast meat. The spuds had more breading which made them taste more like french fries. The biscuits were good and reminded me of a MUCH better KFC biscuit. BBQ sauce was the same but this time around I think my taste buds just adjusted to them. Service: When I told them I wasn't sure if I wanted to get nuggets, the employee insisted that I try them again. She grabbed me, my mom and my dad a sample on the spot. This was very nice of her and unnecessary. Cleanliness: I realize that this is a fast food place but I still expect a clean restaurant. They do try to be clean but it's just an old restaurant. Short of a huge remodel I am not sure what they can do, the place just looks rundown. This place use to be a Foster Farms in the 90's. Also almost every time I see employees handling trash without gloves. I really don't like that because most of the time they go straight back behind the counter to take our order. Bathrooms: The bathrooms at somewhere like this are very necessary. At places like this you get your hands all greasy and you NEED to go to the bathroom to wash them off. I personally don't like touching anything when I go into a bathroom so when a public bathroom has paper towels that I can use to exit I will always cling to those. These bathrooms looked clean and well maintained. Verdict: i would go back! As I write this review I realize that I am craving it. This is what makes a restaurant great imo, makes you want to keep coming back, good customer service, and clean bathrooms. If the place was more modern, a little bit cleaner, and the next time I show up the employee has gloves they will be a 5/4 star experience. I heard the one on Oakdale is much cleaner/nicer. Edit: i feel like this place deserves 4 star because of their service. I hope they work on wearing gloves when handling trash. If I ever crave a place, usually it deserves to be 4 star unless their service is atrocious. read more
