Ye olde burger barn in olde downtown Motown. If you're looking for someplace special to eat, move along. Web's Burgers had more locations at one time, now they're down to this one. As a kid, we once ate at the Web's at the corner of McHenry and Orangeburg on the way to the county fair in Turlock. I had the Big Ben, remember that it was roughly 7 inches wide, and not very good. But hey, I finished it, oh what a good boy am I. Yesterday, I was in Modesto on business, and figured "eh, why not." I got the Big Ben again, and Web's has a Big Ben Special on Mondays and Tuesdays, $5.99 for the meal. I grabbed it, and back I went to Highway 132 and the Bay Area. It's smaller than what it was, and has the same taste as what I had years ago. A quarter pound patty - not exactly big - with tomatoes, onions, lettuce, and some sauce all glopped together into one big juicy mess. I wish I had hot sauce with me. Oh well, it was palatable enough, and Hazel's in Antioch is worse. On the other hand, if you drive up G Street, you get to A&W, and that olde burger barn is really good. Building is old, lots of seating to the right. Small corridor of seats hidden away to the left, and with Modesto being infected with methheads now, I wouldn't be surprised if some, um, activity happens in this hidden hall at Web's. I've eaten at many old burger joints over the years, and I prefer them over fast food. Still, Web's feels like a sad little burger joint that time has passed by. Came in to grab a weekday burger and fries. Their menu was fairly extensive with good prices, lots of options with fresh jalapeños. However it took them like 10 minutes to make the milkshake, the girls had to stand around and coach one of them on how to make one. My burger was huge and yummy, but they don't have a combo option for a milkshake instead of a drink and they charge extra for cheese in this day and age! The staff here is the same most of the time really nice people and are always in great moods. We stopped here on our half way point back to Fresno from San Fran, by accident really. My friend and I were waiting for our next ride and realized we were famished (we also didn't want to wait in the 100+ degree heat and sketchy industrial neighborhood...) Walked in, unsure of what to expect so I ordered safe - a burger (the "Big Ben" cheeseburger) and a strawberry shake. The place had a hole-in-the-wall, diner/dive sort of feel. Kind of ghetto, with dated bright orange seats and no air conditioning. Although the environment was certainly lacking, the food was another story... Could be because we were starving, though, that it really hit the spot. It was just a regular flat patty, can't exactly go wrong- and I'm partial to flat burgers similar to the ones you get at McD's. Unlike mcdonalds, however, there's a generous amount of sauce and veggies piled atop the pressed patty. The shake was also delish, but nothing out of the ordinary. Tasted like fresh strawberries. I don't think I'll be in that area of Modesto again but if I stumble upon it in the future, I may stop in and try something else. 4 stars for a filling, tasty meal.
