Yesterday I visited the Chicken Barn for the first time since they changed hands a few years back. I was not disappointed. The place was clean inside and out. The people were friendly, the service was prompt, and the meal (potato wedges and a grilled chicken sandwich) was on point. I will have to come back to make sure they deserve 5 of 5... God, I hope my cardiologist doesn't read this review; he will kill me (no fried foods). Still, a couple of times a year shouldn't hurt. read more

I used to work for this company many years ago and the food was amazing which is why I keep trying and hoping for better but the last 6 visits have been increasingly worse and after today I give up. Despite intentionally asking every time when the food had been prepared and reassured each time that it was fresh the spuds are rubber, the chicken is dry and over cooked. We recently ordered the group sized Nugget Meal (50 pieces w/ 3 large sides, biscuits, sauces, etc) because our staff were craving some chicken and potato wedges. First time trying this place after talking with a few coworkers who talked about their chicken nuggets and the valley sauce which seems to be popular with everyone. Decided to come in for an early dinner and there were a few patrons. Soon as I came in, someone went to the register to take my order : Decided to try the 7 piece chicken nuggets with spuds and valley sauce. Came out to $15.67 with a self serve drink. Waited a good 7 minutes for my meal so that must mean it was cooked to order. Chicken nuggets - large size nuggets , meaty. Nice coating. Typical country batter- not peppery or salty. It definitely was enhanced by the valley sauce. Valley sauce - had a relish, Dijon taste to it. A bit sweet. But I liked it. The spuds - (side I chose)- 4 potato wedges that were battered. It was good with the valley sauce and filling. The biscuit came with butter. Golden brown and you can tell they made it at the restaurant. Overall, I enjoyed my meal. Customer service was 5 star. Chicken Barn is a place I visited quite often specifically the oakdale location. Unfortunately that has closed and now I find myself at the McHenry location. The place is still good for buying a large amount of chicken nuggets with some spuds and BBQ sauce, you can't go wrong. Location as ample parking an a drive through. The staff was really friendly and professional and we didn't have any issues. The interior feels like your old school fast food joint but had lots of seating and was clean when we got there. Regarding the food I think the nuggets are pretty good, not a fan of the wings or breast though. Defintely worth checking out if you like the chicken nuggets! read more

Unfortunately, we have been sitting in a drive through line for over 10 minutes, unable to order. The staff wasn't responding to us and it's the middle of the day, 3:30 PM. We should be able to place an order and drive up. There's no urgency or staff attention. Writing this review as I wait in line just to leave. The price increase is crazy! It won't be shocking when it closes its doors. I have loved chicken barn aka foster farms (back in the day) since the 90s! Tonight we wait in the line 20 min (after placing our order at the sign) we finally get to the window and they say "it'll be 10 min for your spud order, do you want to wait"? So we say sure. Then he says okay we will hand you the other food and you can pull around and we will bring the spuds out. Ummm why would you give us food now for it to get cold if we are waiting 10 min (mind you we waited 20 after ordering to get to the window so why the weren't cooked during that wait time). So he says oh let me check. Then comes back and said okay we will bring all fresh food out to you together. I knew that was gonna be a lie. Yep 12 min later he brings the hit spuds and the COLD other food. Forgot the drinks he had to go back. I didn't bother telling him again. What's the point. With the endless amount of chicken places around here, why bother with CB anymore. $50-$100 bucks a visit, for cold food. Nah. read more

New ownership & same substandard quality of food. WAY overpriced! Tried the chicken nuggets & they came out to $2 per piece! Many pieces were rubbery like they had been cooked too fast from frozen. The quality was not good and not worth the money. This place didn't need to be sold to new ownership, it needed a refacing of its entire operations. The employees are a losing team, if they are the sole controllers of the organizational outlook. I would restructure the entire place from the ground up. This will never compare to the original Foster Farms restaurant that we all knew and loved; Chicken Barn is just a failed copycat attempt. Save your money & go somewhere else. We used to go here back when the kids where little but had not been here in a while. With our daughter and husband in tow we decided to try it again and see if the chicken sandwiches would be good. The sandwiches were ok the Nashville sauce was a sweet and spicy so that was good but not great. I really enjoyed the spuds those where really good but surprisingly the nuggets where fantastic. I will come again for those with some spuds and the biscuits were also delightful . Good service and clean dining room. Solid 3.5 for the food and 4 for service, cleanliness and vibe. read more

I always see a line here so decided to go through the drive through. It was about an hour before closing and they mentioned they were out of certain items. Prices were decent. We like it better than the fast food places serving chicken. Unfortunately, they are not consistent. Sometimes dry chicken. I enjoy nuggets. They can be varied. Same with the wedges. Horrible service. We spent about $40 for 2 meals. The Chicken Caesar wrap had no dressing inside, barely any chicken, parmesean cheese or croutons--it was mostly chopped iceberg lettuce. Went back to ask for the dressing and was told I had to pay an additional fee -- despite the employee apologizing and saying "yeah I saw them making the wrap and it looked dry but I can't give out free dressing I could get in trouble." I ordered a 3 piece dark combo...2 very small legs & a thigh, an extremely dry crumbly biscuit, spuds (decent) & a drink for $14 and change. Added on a filet chicken sandwich last minute. Got everything home & the chicken sandwich was really disappointing....the bun was hard & chewy, like they tossed it in the microwave, and the chicken filet was dry. For almost $10 for just the sandwich....ridiculous. The 3pc combo was ok...not a lot of flavor in the batter, but ok. The biscuit was bad...there wasn't enough butter to make it decent. The girl helping me @ the drive thru was very nice. But I doubt I'll be going back to Chicken Barn. If I wanted mediocre fried chicken, I could have gone to KFC for a lot less money. read more

Tonight we go in to order for for family and use a gift card i purchased 10 Months ago to be told they don't accept them anymore and I bought the gift cards from the mchenry location where we went to order, im so upset, i have over $100 in gift cards that aren't even a year old. Doesn't seem right for them to do this! A month ago, went through the drive thru and got stuck between Cars when we got up to order, nothing was available without a 15 minute wait, no nuggets or chicken was ready, we were forced to wait in the line for almost twenty minutes and food still wasn't ready when we got there. Oooh, this place has become terrible. From being the BEST spot in the 90's/00's, it's just awful now. Save your time and half your money- grab your chicken sandwich from Popeyes or Chik-fil-a for a real treat. I wish I'd have ordered from Jack in the Box, even... Dry, no flavor to the chicken, overly large and bready bun (not even grilled or warmed), cold dry cheese, no seasoning in the breading and terrible chopped iceburg lettuce (that should have been my first sign it was about to be terrible). The most flavor the sandwich gave was from the lettuce, and that's never a good thing. I thought the spuds may save it, but they're terrible now, too. The restaurant was clean- shockingly came at 5pm and not another table was occupied. Service was slow. The place was super cold- it's December and we could use some heat. But the food was delicious. We enjoyed the Monday nugget special. Even with the special, it was over $50 for 2 adults and 2 kids to eat. But the nuggets were cooked to perfection and the spuds were amazing. Chicken Barn has been our favorite chicken place for as long as I can remember. (25 years?). The last three times I've been there recently the service has been beyond slow, but today took the cake. I dropped off my granddaughter at Juline's Dance in McHenry Village at 3:55. At 4:00 I joined the line in the drive through at CB. I was the last of 8 cars. I sat in my car for 10 minutes without moving. As I had to pick up my granddaughter at 4:30 I backed out of the drive-through line and went inside. I placed my order for a 10 piece nugget two sides of spuds and barbecue sauce. That cashier asked me if I wanted regular spuds or skinny spuds. I said regular. He rang me up and then he excused himself and went to the kitchen and came back and said we won't have any regular spuds for 20 minutes. Would you like skinny fries? And I said 'absolutely because I'm in a hurry.' I waited and waited and waited. I could hear the cashier telling the drive-through customers that there would be no chicken for the next 20 minutes --no kind of chicken,no...no ...I heard over and over again. I kept thinking about all the people in the drive through being locked in and not moving for over 20 minutes. The guy next to me said 'what kind of chicken place doesn't have chicken? ' I received my order at about 4:28. What I've always liked best about chicken barn nuggets is they're good sized, and they're always juicy and well seasoned. These nuggets were smaller, dryer, and more stringy. I'm very sorry that this is happening to chicken barn. There isn't another chicken restaurant in Modesto that is as good. Very disappointing. I bought an eight piece family meal. The sides were OK, however, the chicken and biscuit were disappointing. The biscuits were dry and hard. The chicken tasted like it came from the frozen food section. The pieces were small, dry, and flavorless. Even that "to go" bag was low quality.
