Great amazing food right off of the great western trail and right off of highway 5. Their cheese curds are a HUGE order, double what you would get at other restaurants for the same price. Plus, they are shite cheese curds, which makes every thing better. Their ranch also tastes homemade and is a great pair with virtually anything. The bang bang shrimp tacos were ok, should have ordered chicken but I did the second time. The Nashville hot chicken tenders are just the right amount of spicy and it comes with a biscuit. 1st time making a trip here after seeing several recommendations. I did enjoy the "ambiance". A nice little middle of nowhere vibe with a nice patio. Unfortunately, that was the highlight of my experience. The chicken tenders are well made, but I think I would call them "fingers" rather than tenders. $15 for 4 mediocre fingers that barely cover a slice of bread, a cup of cottage cheese and pretty tasty biscuit hurt my heart a little bit. Not trying to bash this place because It did seem like everyone was enjoying their experience, however if I want chicken tenders I think I would find more value with my $15 at a raising canes. ( and I would much rather support local m&p's) We did have other items such as the tots, cheese curds, grilled chicken ( also $14 for maybe a 3-4oz price of meat) but as I was indifferent about them, I'm not going comment on them. Service. As I was leaving I wanted to go out the patio but was told the front door was the only way to leave. There were at least 20 patrons on the patio but I couldn't go out as it was "service only". (I had walked in this way and nothing was said). Besides that the bartender was being rude by asking if we had gotten a table and would not get us some dressing we had asked for. Food was also very bland and the only flavors that they had was the spicy ranch and spicy dipping sauces for the food. I like to have flavor with my food not the dipping sauces. I stopped by The Chicken with my wife and in-laws this past Thursday. The food was better than you'd expect from a bikers haven along one of central Iowa's most popular bike trails, The Great Western Tail. This oasis serves as the midpoint on the trail between Des Moines and Cumming. Plan accordingly, as even with ample indoor and outdoor seating they are busy during prime biking times. As a cyclist, I appreciate they have a bike repair and maintenance areas well as a local shop on call for support. The outside area also has corn hole bags. Our group had fried pickle chips which were crispy but unseasoned. The cheese curds were really good, almost state fair good! Cheesy, gooey, and crispy. I had the Nashville hot chicken. It was very flavorful, without being overpowering in heat. My wife and MIL had broasted chicken which was juicy and full of flavor. My FIL had fried chicken that looked and tasted on point. The server was friendly. She tried to be attentive, but the amount of tables she had were a challenge. This left us longing for another frothy beverage a few times. Not the perfect visit, but a really good one. I'll definitely be back. The outdoor area was definitely kid friendly at the dinner hour, so we'll probably bring the kids next time. I kept driving and driving and feeling like I was lost and probably mistaken, and then I was there.... at The Chicken! I met my mom and a group of her colleagues for dinner tonight. Everybody pretty much got chicken baskets with various sides. We also got some spicy shrimp and jalapeño deviled eggs for the table. My fave was the deviled eggs to be honest, but we were all pretty darn impressed with how juicy and tasty that spicy chicken was!! With the name "the chicken" you can guess what the menu looked like. Not a chicken eater? They also had some dishes with a fish/shrimp option. We got the shrimp tacos and, other than the shell was not grilled or heated up, we were happy (saw the chicken taco and it was basically a thick chicken strip on a shell). We also had the bbq chicken pizza. Crust was good but could have used a lot less sauce. Looks like there was a good mix of locals and cyclists. Lots of seating inside and out. Very nice stop on a bike ride on the Great Western Trail south of Park Avenue. It's new since the last time I rode this trail and found it to be a great location. It was a 5 mile bike ride from the trail head near Orlando's. It's a restaurant/bar with a nice sized patio overlooking the bike trail. We stopped on a Saturday morning, I would imagine it has different personalities during different times of the day. We had breakfast, which seemed fine. I'm not a big breakfast person it's hard for me to judge. Prices seemed reasonable. The patio was open even at 9am on a pleasant day. Wait staff was friendly. And let me tell you the waffle was the very best waffle I have ever had... I am still dreaming about it. The Nashville Hot Chicken that was on top of it was super juicy and just the right amount of hot! My friend had the Iowa hot chicken and he loved it too. Settled on beers and wings for apps. Buffalo wings were very good and had some heat. For entrees I had the Nashville chicken. It was a little sweet and a little spicy. Juicy and cooked correctly, but a fair amount of grease left in the bottom of the basket. Texas toast and some fries were inedible because of the puddle of grease. I love sweet potato fries but there's are flat and have a "over frozen" flavor. As others have said, ranch dressing is good. Kitchen times are not. Each time, felt food took way too long. Hate all the high top tables. 2 out of 3 times we got stuck at the same one, right next to the kitchen entrance. Although it is convenient, no bill is presented.
