Found our new go-to spot for Korean fried chicken! We were really hungry and may have ordered a little too much for two people. We got the Medium Wings and Drumsticks in Soy Garlic and Spicy Medium, Potstickers, and Sweet Potato fries. Everything was so fresh and piping hot! We did have to wait 20 minutes or so but it was totally worth it. Chicken had a light breading that was perfectly crisp and covered evenly in the sauces. I did enjoy the soy garlic more and thought the spicy medium could have used a tiny bit more spice but I'll just try to spicy hot next time. Excellent fried chicken from this small mom and pop fried chicken spot in Castro Valley. A "small" can easily feed two if you aren't big eaters as it comes with rice, a side salad, 4 drumsticks and 4 flats. Keep in mind these are full size chicken wings! Not the little ones you get at Wingstop or other big brand wing spots so it's more filling than it sounds. We were adventurous and decided to try all 6 flavors and while all of them were pretty good, their soy garlic and spicy (medium or hot depending on your tolerance) we're out favs. Spicy curry was also a pleasant surprise with good flavor that wasn't too in your face, but I don't think I could eat a whole order of it. Sweet and sour was pretty average - nothing bad to say about it, but nothing that stands out. The Chicken on Fire is a special place for my family and the food here is outstanding. We enjoy all the flavors, but our favorites are definitely the Hot and the Spicy Curry flavors. The soy garlic is also a hit too; but honestly you can't go wrong with any of the flavors. We always order the sweet potato fries as well. What really sets the COF apart from other places though besides the great food is the customer service; especially the owner Diane. She is awesome and is the heart and soul of the COF. She always treats customers as family and will make time to come over and talk to us; especially to my son always asking him about what he's been up to since our last visit and he can't wait to tell her all about it. Definitely give the Chicken on Fire a try if you haven't been; I promise you will not be disappointed. We have never had a bad experience in the nearly 10 years we have been coming here starting from when they were originally in Hayward to their current location here in Castro Valley. Great value for great food! Definitely recommend! Food (10/10) - Overall, the food here is just amazing. The chicken is crispy and juicy and the sauce just coats your mouth with a wonderful flavor (I like a soy garlic and curry combo). The value is great too! On our dine-in, we got a large wings and drumettes. Two massive plates of chicken that fed a party of 4 to absolute fullness for just under $50. This is value that you rarely see nowadays and absolutely recommend getting this for large parties. The sides were a bit more expensive but honestly, not outrageous. 10 potstickers for $8 is pretty good value. Probably wouldn't order it again on a second go-around but definitely something worth trying. Sauce on the side was good. French fries were $6. Let me tell you, these french fries were GOOD. They were perfectly crispy and had the real potato flavor. Salad wasn't super notable but I liked the acidic dressing... super refreshing. Only thing I do not recommend getting is the side of ranch and the extra rice. The "large rice" is the same size as the one you get when ordering the chicken. Also $2 for a little glass bowl of ranch is definitely not worth it. With that being said, overall this menu is REALLY GOOD VALUE. Service (8/10) - Nice server and overall super efficient for a restaurant with only one person working the front (and presumably someone in the back). Service lady gives off a bit of unfriendly vibes but that may have been because I knocked over a cup of water.. :') With that being said, the service was unaffected (water remained filled, checked in, etc.) Additional comments - There are some important things to keep in note when you're dining in. First, they don't take parties over 6 so don't bring a whole entourage here. Just order the chicken to-go; it is just as good at home as when you are in the restaurant. I have no idea how they do it but the chicken stays crispy and hot. Second, they charge an immediate 20% gratuity for parties 5+. I think that's a bit excessive but the interior of the restaurant isn't really designed to house that many people. They have four 4-person tables and one 6-person table. Overall, absolutely love this restaurant. I have gotten it take out a couple of times and those experiences have almost always been positive as well. The small side salad had light sesame dressing but beware that it is pretty sweet. The side of fries and tenders were just okay. The fries were a bit odd since they were harder to chew. The chicken tenders were pretty small - at least smaller than most tenders. They should also offer seasoned chicken tenders. It was nice to have space from others during this pandemic. However, their takeout orders were busy busy! The Chicken On fire is located off one of the quieter parts of Castro Valley Blvd. One of the newer spots on this stretch of road, it offers its customers some tasty Korean style fried chicken. This particular visit was a takeout visit with the family. The service speed was, okay. Arrived at the estimated time of when it would be ready. When we arrived to pick up the food, we were told to go outside in the car and wait for the order to be ready. Waited about 15 minutes longer passed the time when we arrived before getting our order. My sister is the one who frequents here, and tells me this is certainly not the usual, but if they get busy just be aware wait times might not be accurate reflected when provided an estimate. Pricing wise, they are fair, for Korean fried chicken that is. Obviously not going to compare if you are looking at it from the perspective of chain fried chicken places. Let's get down to the food. The order was simple today, lots of wings, and lots of salad. The wing order was for the soy garlic, of which, we got the sauce on the side so we could just toss it with the sauce at home rather than having it sauced there then get home soggy. If you prefer this method, just let them know you want the sauce on the side. Of course, if you're just lazy, optimal is to just have it done as a regular order. The chicken itself is nice. The chicken wings and drumsticks are well sized. They are also fried well. Not quite the traditional Korean fried chicken style of batter, but it still comes out crunchy and yummy. Sauces were good too, though I would be interested in a more sweeter sauce next time to try out. The salad, was just a simple cabbage salad, and they have a sesame-ish style dressing for it to just pour on top of the salad. It's alright. Nothing out of the ordinary as far as the flavoring goes. Do wish there was more of the dressing though as the ration of salad to dressing was not quite as well balanced as I would want it to be.
