Yumee Katsu has expanded into another strip mall location, this time in Castro Valley. This casual restaurant specializes in katsus (breaded cutlets) served alongside Korean-style noodle dishes. The Shrimp Curry Udon came with three breaded shrimps on top of udon in a thick curry sauce, served with shredded cabbage salad, pickled onions, pickled daikon, and miso soup. The Jjolmyon were cold, chewy noodles in a spicy sauce, topped with shredded green/red cabbage, seaweed, carrots, scallions, zucchini, and a hard-boiled egg. Mixed together, this made for a cool, refreshing noodle dish. On the side, we got a Cheese Katsu, made of ooey, gooey cheese wrapped in a slice of pork, all in a crispy breading. My favorite entree (though not by far) was the Rose Toppoki Cutlet, made of chewy cylindrical rice cakes and slices of fish cake in a creamy, sweet, spicy, savory tteokbokki sauce, all topped with a pork cutlet. Vibes were a little off. The seating is hella tight, like too tight for comfort. Especially if you come with a family or group of 3+ Came by for dinner with some girlfriends and we all arrived at different times. There was a huge party that was trickling in that seemed to also be a reserved table. You order via tablet so food order is first come first serve. It's not great for a reservation type situation, but also for the other tables if you happen to be dining in at the same time as a larger group. It's chaotic and the restaurant is so small that you're just watching the noise unfold. I got the chicken curry and my friends got the cheese cutlet as well as the assorted cutlet. My chicken curry was probably the best. They truly do panko fry the cutlets to the perfect crunch vs tender ratio. The cheese cutlet was a little too rich, so you might want to order the assorted combo so at least you have variety. I enjoyed my chicken curry, it was very filling and I demolished the whole plate. Service is kind, and they're doing their best. I think management has some work to do. The tablets are bolted down so it's awkward for all members to get a chance to look at the menu without neck pain and reaching over other diners. This is a fairly new restaurant. We came here after walking around the cherry festival on Saturday. We arrived around 2:30pm and still lots of people! I thought it was weird that some tables had a ipad connected to it to order, but half did not. So we waited for the server to come. We got the pork loin cutlet udon and the regular pork loin cutlet. We both enjoyed our meals overall. But the only thing is we both thought the pork was a bit dry inside. Wish it was more moist. The outside was very crispy/crunchy so that was great. We came into this place around 5:30PM on a Friday, and there was plenty of seating available! By the time we left, the restaurant was completely full, so come early! There are tablets on each table to order, but the waitresses were still very attentive - they asked if we had any questions about the menu since their tablet isn't all that descriptive. At our table, there is a device that we order our food from. It's nice that there are pictures of the food, but it's not so nice that there is no description of what is in the food. Absolute chef's kiss It's way different from your typical Japanese katsu, extra crispy, super flavorful, and somehow still light at the same time. The curry tastes pretty close to classic Japanese curry, but they add extra garlic which honestly makes it even better. My only complaint? While it was convenient to order yourself at the table, certain items I was unfamiliar with didn't have a description. Orders: Yumee Pork Cutlet w/Curry-a nice moist piece of pork cutlet w/a mildly light curry sauce added. I was pleasantly surprised at how moist & tender the pork was. The panko breading has the perfect amount of coating & not saturated in oil. The curry sauce could have been spicier in my opinion for a little added heat, but it was still good. The appetizers were subpar & was sparse so this was a little disappointing. It was mostly pickled vegetables & it didn't have the diversity I was looking forward to. Rant incoming.. I liked the Rosé Ttekbokki so much the first time I came here, I came back a month after to order it again. But this time IT WASN'T THE SAME. Just tried this spot for the first time and was very impressed with the taste and quality of the food. First off, if you are dining in, it is a smaller restaurant so it would be difficult to seat multiple large parties. Each table has a tablet for you to order. As much as I love the personal aspect of someone coming over to take your order, I do believe this method is more efficient for a place this size. Servers are present and seemed attentive to their customers. I ordered for takeout so I used a kiosk, ordered shrimp katsy curry udon and two orders of the assorted katsu which included cheese, pork and shrimp. While waiting, the workers did update me from time to time about the status of my order, everyone was very friendly. The fry-job on the katsu was very well done, very crispy and not over-fried. I recommend ordering the assorted katsu that way you can try all three of their offerings. Between the three, I enjoyed the shrimp the most though that is just because I love shrimp, there was nothing at all wrong with the pork and cheese, they were all delicious. The togo packaging was okay, I thought the containers weren't consistent with the food itself in terms of sizing and portion. The rice portions were fairly small in my opinion. But then, they called 2 parties ahead of us and when I pointed out that we were next and that she probably read the name wrong, she didn't acknowledge that she read it wrong and instead was just going to skip us. To avoid issues like that I would highly recommended a check-in system through an iPad since they already use it for ordering throughout the restaurant. Then, it took about another 20 minutes for us to get our food. There wasn't nearly enough waiting space especially given the rain that evening. As for the food, it is on the pricier side for what you get. We ordered the katsu curry with rice and a side of udon noodles and then a chicken katsu curry with rice. It was over $42 plus tax and tip for the meal, which is pricy. The chicken was thin in some areas and too thick in others. My partner said the chicken tasted dry. The soup it came with tasted a little like miso soup but more fishy. The salad had a weird dressing on it that kind of smelled of soap. We barely got any udon and there was not enough vegetarian options -- they only have cheese katsu as an appetizer but not enough other options. As for the curry itself -- it had the right flavors but it was lukewarm when it came out, watery, and there was very little of it. For $20 a plate I would have thought there'd be much more food. There was also no veggies in the curry itself where I'm used to potatoes, peas, carrots -- something.... After my second time of trying Yumee Katsu, I can gladly acknowledge them as a reliable spot for quick, simple, and comforting meals revolving around their fried Katsu. At first glance, everything is quite simple, from the menu options to their layout and ordering system, everything is streamlined pretty well. Upon entering the small shop, you'll be greeted and seated by kind staff. There are tablets at most tables where you can browse and order on your own, or you can opt in for a physical menu where the staff will help take your order. During our first visit, my partner and I ordered the Curry Udon w/Fried Pork Katsu and the Jjolmyun (Spicy Korean Chewy Noodle?) w/Fried Pork Katsu. The Curry Udon actually lacked flavor and thickness. I would guess that it's because of the residual water from the cooked udon, but nonetheless, a bit disappointing. The Jjolmyun had more flavor, but it was primarily sweet flavors that embodied the chewy noodles and sliced veggies; contrast to the citrusy and savory Bibim Naengmyeon you'd more commonly see at Korean restaurants. Despite the weaker noodle dishes, the Fried Pork Katsu was easily the highlight. A big decadent piece of fried katsu sliced to encompass the majority of the plate proved itself. The meat to batter ratio was great, the meat was pretty tender, it was fried perfectly; exactly what you'd look for when ordering a Fried Katsu. Is it the best that I've ever had that's comparable to ones In Korea and Japan? No, but it gets the job done! The second time around I ordered the Rosé Toppoki w/Fried Katsu while my friend ordered the Curry Rice w/Fried Katsu. I actually enjoyed the Rosé Toppoki and thought it paired well with the Katsu. It was also a sweeter thick sauce with a bit of a spicy kick. Unsurprisingly, my friend wasn't too impressed with the Curry and thought it could've been thicker and richer, but like me, he enjoyed the Katsu. Both times, the service was great. We were greeted with kind smiles and occasional check ins throughout our meal. They even provided us a katsu sauce mid-meal, that you can supposedly ask for free of charge. The server kindly explained how it was imported from Korea and contained pear. Through and through, Korean Auntie's providing great service, smiles, and good food has lead to a great experience that would keep me coming back. Came around 5:50pm on a Friday and there were a good amount of people already. We were able to get maybe the 2nd to last table. Some tables have the tablet to place your order, like the Dublin location. The restaurant is also similar in size to the one in Dublin - maybe a tad bit bigger. Service was attentive and we were given a large pitcher of ice water for the table. They somehow forgot our 2 yumee katsu orders, but did let us know they were working on it and gave us a free udon while we were waiting. This was a nice gesture. The udon was pretty good; it might be using the same soup/broth as the side soup that comes with the katsu. We did get our order about 10-15 minutes later and it was good. Good portion of katsu (maybe even a bit more than the Dublin location). Lean pieces of pork and cooked fairly well. Wish there was a bit more katsu sauce to go with the large amount of meat. read more

Wow! Me and my Fiance really enjoyed this spot! Quick break down. Food: 5/5 stars. The food was hot and well plated. Their curry was delicious! I'm not a big curry guy but it was very good. We ordered the chicken katsu with rice and curry. I wasn't expecting it to taste that great honestly! The chicken had a really good crust and was moist. The plate was enough for the both of us to feel satisfied. We also had their Rose Topokki. The topokki was also delicious! Hahah. Plenty of heat from the spices but not overly spicy that it's not enjoyable. But just enough to make your nose a bit runny and to want to drink a few sips of water here and there. Reminds me of YUP DDUK LA's topokki IYKYK. The portions were excellent for two to enjoy. Worth the money for sure. Will be back. Service: 5/5 stars. Greeted and seated. Solid Curry Chicken Cutlet. The cutlet was juicy and cooked perfectly. Wish it just came with more curry. You can order extra curry for $5.99, which I thought was a little on the pricey side. Had a side of cold soba which was really good, nice compliment to the rest of the meal. Service was excellent, our server went above and beyond. The restaurant isn't very big and was packed for lunch so seating was a little tight. read more

Super good! Love the variety of curry dishes you can get and the additional side items; the salad was very nice! The tobbokki was really good, nice spice level. The curry udon was chill, but the curry flavor was very mid. Chicken was super good! And other thing: please add prices to the menus!!! Both of our dishes were $19.99, but it feels weird not to include that anywhere, or at least not on the menus we received. read more
