What a lovely stop in beautiful Beaufort! The Chocolate Tree has an array of options, not just chocolate! Also, there is sugar-free chocolate. We love bringing guests from out of town here and sharing that the chocolate from Forrest Gump came from this store. The attendance behind the counter are always helpful with choosing what to get. Another one of my favorite purchases from here are the Rice Krispie treats. We have gotten them twice. In one of my pictures you can see a Rice Krispie from the Star Wars collection. If I could give negative stars I would! Being in the business,so to speak, I always sent guests to the Chocolate Tree! Never, ever again. A once wonderful establishment in Beaufort has ruined a lovely tradition by hiring the worst, disrespectful, disgusting bunch of young people I have ever encountered. The first few times, I thought, this can't actually be true. But they get worse with each trip in the door. This is not Pat Greens Chocolate Tree in any way, shape or form. Even the shelves are bare, dusty and dirty. Forrest Gump would not enter here. What happened to the Hall of Fame? Shame. read more

I was advised to make a stop at The Chocolate Tree during my stop in Beaufort as I needed to try the excellent chocolate. The rumor I heard was that Tom Hanks loved the chocolate here and the box of chocolates he ate in Forrest Gump were replaced with chocolates from The Chocolate Tree. The Chocolate Tree has a front entrance with street parking out front and another entrance in the back with a parking lot, just make sure you park in the correct lot. When I was there most of the customers came in knowing what they wanted and were in and out. I was a little overwhelmed with all of the choices. I got some assortment boxes. They also sell the chocolate by the piece in the cases as well as fudge and other items like pralines and toffee. If you are in Beaufort make sure to stop by here to try the chocolates. I adore the nostalgia of an old school chocolate shop! The chocolate is made right next to the shop and there are so many to choose from! We picked an array of chocolate creams and truffles to bring home. We loooved the chocolate tree! I think the best way to describe the chocolate tree is that it strikes the perfect balance of being accessible to someone whose idea of chocolate is something from a grocery store checkout line and someone who knows where their beans came from, the Snickers to the snobs. We were in the area for a month and came to the chocolate tree at least 4 times. Their chocolate is smooth and creamy and has great flavor. We picked up several Easter treats and let me just say Reese's would be in serious trouble if Chocolate Tree ever got into mass production. Their peanut butter egg is peanut butter cup perfection. The dark and milk chocolate versions are both spectacular. My wife loves the dark chocolate mints. And all the treats are very cutely decorated for the holidays. Cute little shop near the main shopping area in Beaufort by the water. It was fairly busy when we stopped in, but the staff didn't seem overwhelmed. The shop itself is a little older, but it looks like they keep it clean and organized. There are plenty of options for various types of chocolates and sweet snacks. They have a large selection of chocolates they make with lots of options for every taste. The staff answered questions I had about the different options in the case and I got a few things to taste. One of my favorite go to spots for special occasions. I stopped by on 5/6/24 around 5:00 p.m. The elderly clerk tried to rush my decision on which chocolate I planned to purchase, and when I came to a decision, she coughed several times in her hand and proceeded to prepare my order! Been coming here for as long as I can remember and I'm 40 years old. Grew up walking distance from here and I've had my fair share of chocolate and other treats from here over the years. The quality is still good all these years later. Was just in town last weekend and went by three times to get fresh chocolates for snacks and for dessert. I highly recommend the peanut chocolates including the peanut pushers. They aren't making my favorite they called the Jimmy Carters anymore. If they bring them back, I highly recommend you get one! read more

You really can't go wrong with a shop that's dedicated to chocolate. Free parking right on the street was the cherry on top. Walked in knowing that we'd be walking out with chocolate, so we took our time looking around. We were treated to a free sample of either dark or milk chocolate. I'm a dark chocolate fan. For myself, I purchased a bag of dark chocolate covered macadamia nuts, which are amazing, and I have to practice major self control to not eat them all in one sitting. There are so many choices for all tastes, including gift packages for loved ones. So many truffles, fudges, etc. to choose from. This place is dangerous for my wallet and stomach. Everything we got from here (4 or 5 pieces of sweet treats) tasted unique and well made. I will say that this shop has a very old vibe to it and it almost feels as if the place needs to be freshened up. Not changed but just brought up to speed. Still has the look of an old drug store layout but without the charm. And yes, the old ladies behind the counter may look welcoming but are nowhere near as sweet as the chocolates. I would suggest checking this place out if you're looking for some unique treats, but look, figure out what you want, order, and get out. That's probably how the staff would prefer it anyway. Today my 3 children went into the store to get a treat, my son picked up a stuffed animal trying to decide which he wanted to get, an employee came from behind the counter snatched it from his hand and said he is not allowed to touch them, he had put one back the wrong way. I fully intended to purchase one along with candy for my others but we left empty handed. My son in tears because a stranger yelled at him. I wrote to the company and let them know what happened, they wrote me back saying since I am a mother I should understand why their plush items should not be touched. My son is 4 he could not decide between a shark or an alligator so he picked them up to check them out. This was walking distance from out hotel which was super dangerous. I'm glad we waited until the last day to venture out. The place looks big from the outside but inside it felt a little cramped. However they make a lot of their own chocolate, I'm not sure if they make it all on their own. When we came in one of the rooms had glass walls and you can peak in as some women were working on chocolate molds. There were so many options for chocolate. It was hard to decide. I was here at Beaufort for 30 days on business looking for something nice for my better half. Found this Mom and Pop local chocolate shop. It reminds me of See's candies where I grew up in the Bay Area. As soon as you walk into The Chocolate Tree the smell takes you back to being a child. Lots of variety for every sweet tooth in this place. I like the fact it's handmade. Anyway I bought the 3 lb sampler box ($54.00). Kindof expected more of this place. The chocolate tree is more of a wall design vs an actual architecturally finished item. Chocolate is well made and served in different sizes shapes and flavor. Prices for items are posted but not exactly under all the specific sweets. When I ask politely what the price of their chocolate is, and they proceed to say "look in front of you" and it actually being more of a description label about the type of sugar they use, I can honestly say no sales from me. Great Chocolate / Bad Attitude My girl friend and I immediately got a bit of an attitude from the curmudgeon behind the counter upon asking her if this was the store from which the "box of chocolates " was purchased for the movie "Forest Gump". Or should I instead say, ATTEMPTED to ask. My girlfriend got as far as "Is this the store that . . . ", at which point she was cut off with a stern "Yes it is!" So she says, "I'm surprised that you don't have any reference to it here in the store." The employee looks at her as if she has two heads and rudely responds, "That was 20 years ago." Two things make that a totally ignorant remark. One, the connection to that film, whether it be 20 years ago or 120 years ago, is going to help generate business. Second, while insinuating that the store's connection to a 20-year-old movie makes the connection irrelevant, they have a section of one entire wall dedicated to the 65 YEAR OLD episode of "I Love Lucy" that centers around Lucy working in a chocolate factory, this having absolutely nothing directly to do with the store other than that it pertains to the manufacture of chocolate. Whether The Chocolate Tree chooses to use their connection to Forrest Gump to market their store is certainly their own business. Whether they do or don't, they need not act like such a-holes when questioned about it. No doubt they're probably tired of people referencing it. Nevertheless, suck it up and don't be stupid.
