At first, it took about two weeks to get in, and I was a little frustrated because I was getting shaggy. (I later learned that Josh gets booked up because he's really good.) I really like having a barber who can I go back to faithfully though, so I took a chance. On my first visit, I learned that Josh and I don't have a ton in common, but we do in the most important areas in life, and that's all I need. Probably the best experience I've ever had in a barbershop. The store itself has such a relaxing atmosphere and clean aesthetic. Josh was friendly and professional, and I could quickly tell he was someone who takes pride in his work. Josh is hands down the best hair artist on the Central Coast. His barbershop is an awesome place to relax and an overall great place to give your hair the attention and style it deserves. Not being in a large metro area like San Francisco or Los Angeles it's hard to find someone whose passion is really shown through the attention to detail in their work. The Chop Shop is conveniently located off Foothill near Santa Rosa that you won't have to fuss trying to find parking or paying for a meter somewhere. Simply park in the off street lot walk up to the shop and relax. Walking in a little early for my appointment, Josh was eager to greet me right away and was extremely genuine. Josh really cares about how you want your hair to look and will do everything in his power to give you it. Every step of the way, he was considerate to ask how I wanted my side burns, the back of my hair, even how I wanted to have my top taper to my sides! How cool! Where the magic comes in though is in his experience using both traditional clippers as well as scissors. Most barbershops I wouldn't trust coming close to my head with a pair of shears; however, the style I like requires a close buzz on the sides and only scissors on the top, this is a technique he has completely mastered. He is able to blend the top into the sides flawlessly that will leave virtually no lines on your head so that your style looks like a complete haircut and not haphazardly thrown together. They had a bad experience but I attribute that to lack of communication. They clearly were not able to convey their needs effectively or ask him for advice. Having no idea what kind of style I wanted coming into the Chop Shop, Josh ran me through his recommendations and made me comfortable with his expertise. I am about to move out of San Luis Obispo and, I must say, one of the hardest parts about relocating out of the area is not being able to hit up the Chop Shop as part of my routine. Josh is a true artisan, an efficient perfectionist and a really awesome human being. While his cuts may be speedy and executed in the barber shop style, his scissor work is impeccable and arguably better than the best hair stylists in town - it's the best of both world's. Due to his killer skills and reasonable pricing, he can get quite busy during the high season. So be sure to give him at least a few days notice when you are in need of a cut. Walk-ins are welcome - but I'd avoid it if you can. If you are looking for a barber shop to call your own on the Central Coast (first of all, I envy you), I think you would be absolutely foolish not to hit up Josh and the Chop Shop. I went into The Chop Shop today for my 3rd (or 4th?) cut. I'm really happy with the cut and everything about the experience. I cannot recommend the shop enough (even with the risk of making it harder for me to get an appointment in the future!). Here's a summary of what you have to look forward to: Starting off, when I first called to make an appointment, I left a message and THEY CALLED ME BACK! Sad that this stands out to me, but it seems like these days it takes forever to get some people to return calls. Not Josh...he was right on it. For follow up appointments, Nick and Josh are really good about just texting to get you on the calendar. I've only experienced them being on time and super reliable. The lounge area is comfy and worth just hanging out in. The plaza that they are located in is relaxing and full of good restaurants. The cut was pro. Josh is skilled with the blade, scissors, and clippers. It never feels rushed, or like he is just going through the motions, he is a skilled barber. His cuts really last a long time too. I can go a month without a trim, but he has offered the neck trim if I want it. Good products for sale too. His pomade that he carries keeps your style going the whole day and doesn't look greasy. read more

I recently moved up to the Santa Ynez Valley from San Diego, and it's been a struggle trying to find a solid barber shop. I looked into some boutique barber shops in Downtown Santa Barbara, but some of them were charging up to 40 bucks for a cut! What a joke... What was even more ridiculous was that you could pay for an annual membership, which gave you "perks". That's the kind of crap that you wouldn't even expect from a salon... After looking around forever and ever, I decided to look in SLO and to give the Chop Shop a try. Prices seem more reasonable. $25+tip, and the style of the shop was more along the lines of what I was looking for. Josh, the shop owner, gave me a gentlemen's cut, and hand to god, it's the best haircut I have EVER gotten. I felt like a million bucks walking out of the shop! He was a no BS kind of guy, and very meticulous with his clippers and his scissors. He seems very proud of his work, and that's what you really want to see! I think it's safe to say that I've found a new barber now. I will be making the weekend trips up to SLO for my haircuts from now on. read more
