Great food and service. I had the prime filet with a Caesar salad to start. Good ambience and not too loud. Would definitely recommend.

This place has a great atmosphere for a small town in this historic building. The service was not great, but what we expected for East Texas. My wife I ordered the same things, filets cooked medium. When it got to the table, it was a ribeye and a filet....waiter turned it in wrong, but we accepted it since we didn't want to wait. I ordered a cocktail and had to keep asking for it, finally got it 20 minutes later. The steaks were just OK, but extremely over priced! We tried it.....but we won't be back! If you are use to top end steak houses in big cities, you will be disappointed in this place since you will be paying big city steak house prices for marginal food and service. read more

We celebrated a birthday at the restaurant. We had appetizers, dinner, wine and dessert. The food was excellent. I had the ribeye and it was cooked to perfection. Exactly how I requested it. Our waiter was attentive, courteous, friendly and knowledgeable. Dessert was divine. We drove from the DFW area to try this out and the review we got from friends didn't do it justice. Let me start this review by saying I had been to The Chophouse on Bankhead on two other occasions one was a set menu holiday event and the other was just a gathering of friends. This was not the same restaurant I visited before. After talking to one of the owners it would seem the "executive chef" moved on to another venture. I say good for the restaurant. Upon entering you get a much calmer feeling everyone seemed to be working efficiently and with a lot more pep in their step. The staff seemed happier. The next thing I noticed was that enormous gaudy vase was missing as well as a few of the out of place furnishings. The decor is now what I would expect in a Mount Vernon restaurant. Elegant country but not overwhelming. We had a few drinks at the bar and the bar tender was very well versed in different drinks. There was a good selection of craft beers as well. When we were seated for our meal our waitress was attentive and friendly. my water glass was never empty and she made several trips to the bar for us always asking if we would like another before our glasses were empty. I was impressed that the menu had been expanded and with dishes that one would enjoy eating (more comfort type food less hoitey toitey tiny piece of meat, some drizzle, and a carved vegetable for presentation). I was very much surprised when they brought out the food and it covered the plate (the portions for the price were very generous). The desert menu was awesome and varied as well. We left spending around a hundred dollars for four people, drinks, ample amounts of delicious food and dessert as well as a generous tip. If you are anywhere near Mount Vernon Texas and you are hungry I wholly recommend The Chophouse on Bankhead. Its even worth driving two hours for a meal but call ahead as they fill up with reservations early. read more

It's just a matter of time before this place is known all around this area. It is truly high-end, 5 star dining in Mt. Vernon. Normally after a meal of this caliber, we have to drive an hour and a half home. The wine list was impressive and extremely reasonable. We enjoyed a bottle that would've easily been twice the price in the metroplex. The tortilla soup was decadent and the 28-day age prime filet was as good as any I've had. This place was amazing! My coworker and I were in the area for work, so I was tasked with finding places to eat. We had an early reservation on a Wednesday (not required, I think), and the chef immediately came out and began chatting with us. He made some amazing recommendations, including the crab cakes and (for me) the salmon special-of-the-day. (He correctly pointed out that the other two dishes I was considering, I could get any time because they were regular menu items.) The crab cakes were fantastically flavored and almost entirely crab! (You'd be surprised how many places will put in extra bread crumbs to make their crab cakes look bigger.) They came with a fascinating mild mustard sauce and a small side salad. The salmon was well-seasoned and came on a bed of sauteed spinach (I ate every bite) and mashed potatoes (the only reason I didn't finish those was that I was absurdly stuffed by then). My coworker's 28-day-aged steak was cooked to perfection, and he raved about the asparagus. And I cannot say ENOUGH about how wonderful and thoughtful the service was. I would have loved to have tried dessert but I was just too full. Instead, we headed to the charming bar area and took our drinks (port for me, a Negroni for my coworker) out onto the patio. Was traveling through East Texas (6 p.m., 9/7/19) and though I would stop for dinner on my way to Dallas. I should not have stopped here. Not a great wine selection. Sure, California has wonderful wines. Just not the wines in the Chophouse cellar. The prime rib is overpriced for the quality. I ordered rare and it came to me medium, but then I don't expect much in East Texas. Still, I would hope the chef would know the difference between rare and medium. "We're busy. You get what you get on a Saturday night" is not the response I thought I would get from a server, but that's what I got. Management was not much better. Left a review on Facebook and got a canned response: "We're sorry you had a bad experience, insert usual platitudes here." I checked. It's the same unimaginative response on all the bad reviews, of which there are not many but enough that I wish I had consulted TripAdvisor or Yelp prior to my visit. The loud drunks at the bar did not help the experience, either. I won't be back. read more
