My meal was awesome! I had the blackened salmon with shrimp on top... We ate outside and the flies were horrible and we were told by our waiter that the fly swatters were out of batteries... Without a doubt the best food I've experienced since moving to Texas. The crab cakes were heavenly and some of the best I've ever had and coming from a boy from the Deep South/Gulf Coast that's high praise! The steak was cooked to sublime perfection and as tender as butter! Even the potato was impressive. More importantly the deserts were Out of this world. I have had good cheesecake before but this cheesecake was manna from heaven. The key lime pie couldn't be better if you were sitting in the Keys watching the sun set over the gulf. The beautiful historic building on the square is wonderful, don't miss the beautiful bar in the back and the fabulous patio that even in the drought has beautiful flowers blooming. Living closer to Dallas we have so many other options available but wanted to try this place out. I'm so glad we did because the food was amazing! The guys both had ribeyes and were extremely happy with the seasoning (not too much black pepper) and cooked perfectly to order. My tuna steak was wonderful and just the right amount of spice. Then my friend had a delectable and fresh chicken parmigiana that melted in her mouth! The chocolate volcano was the perfect size to share and delicious! Oh and the wine! Great selection! They didn't carry my favorite but the Domaine Serene Pinot Noir was a great substitute! We'll definitely be back!! read more

I hate giving 2 stars, but when you request a $50 filet to be medium rare and it comes out medium well, there's really no choice. The staff was pleasant (young, but they try) ordered Scallops and Lobster bisque for appetizers, the scallops were fantastic, so much in fact we ordered more with our meal. That was a mistake cause they came out cold the 2nd time, probably sitting around waiting for my filet to overcook. I consider myself to be an understanding person, and definitely wanted to give this place another try, but when I noticed the filet that I didn't eat and told the waitress it was over cooked and I didn't want to wait for another (oh yeah, service is slow, which is fine for me because I enjoy conversation with the company I'm with) was on my bill, I asked about it. I was originally told they can't take food off the bill. Huh?!? So I asked to speak with the manager, she came over and gave me the same line about not being able to remove it. I was getting pretty frustrated at this point. (They put my overcooked filet in a to go box and set it on the table) Finally the bar manager came over I explained everything (again) and he said "oh, I didn't realize you didn't eat the filet" so it was taken off my bill and I was able to leave. So after feeling belittled and made to feel like a cheapskate because I didn't want to pay for a filet I didn't eat I'd feel uncomfortable going back again. read more

A little east Texas treasure. The Chophouse anchors the Franklin County square. It's in a historic building, authentic and comfortable at the same time. We've eaten there several times and each time has been excellent. A wide range of options from steaks to fish to chicken fried chicken to a gourmet burger. The appetizers selection is awesome with the asparagus tempura at the top our list. We've even made a small plate dinner of several starters. The wait staff is young, energetic and friendly. And the owners, Brad and Stephanie even stopped by our table to make sure everything was perfect. The cocktails are creative, give the pineapple jalapeño margarita or smoky old fashion a try. The bar area is nice, large selection of whisky and as comfortable as your living room. Even on warm summer nights the patio is a comfortable place to eat. This warm and inviting downtown restaurant can certainly boast the most progressive and diverse menu in Mt. Vernon (and surrounding area), but the executed dishes (appetizer and entrees) fell short of our expectations... especially relative to the price point, which I would argue is understated at "$$". Further, service was cordial yet somewhat under informed about the menu/specials. Additionally, service response/delivery was slow, as the kitchen appeared overwhelmed by a group event. Worth noting, there are virtually no child-friendly menu options (which is presumably purposeful), but to their credit, the kitchen was accommodating enough to prepare a simple pasta dish that hit the spot for our four year old. To be clear (and fair), everything we ordered was tasty. I would, however, suggest raising questions about portions, preparation methods and ingredient quality/quantity, in an effort to make an informed decision about your selections. read more

We decided to try The Chophouse on my husband's birthday (2/20) which also fell on Wednesday (Wed & Thur Happy Hour nights) We arrived about 5:30pm (absolutely no one else in the bar or restaurant) we were seated by the wine room (and kitchen) as to accommodate our group of 4 (vs us all eating on bar stools) My husband asked upon looking at the wine list why there were no Texas wines. We were told "if you want Texas wine, then you can go to a Texas winery". OUCH! That wasn't very nice. The whole wine list was basically CA. But what's funny, The Chophouse shows up at "local Texas wine & food fests" but they aren't interested in sourcing local wine from any. Things just went down hill from there.... Our appetizers took forever to come out from the kitchen and dinner was the same (once we left about 7pm, there was still only a very few people in the bar, absolutely no one in the restaurant) We were brought some rolls while on a long wait for our dinners. We watched in the kitchen as they were removed from a plastic bag and warmed up. (So not fresh) Food was mediocre (and very overpriced) at best. Not sure why our food took so incredibly long when it all lacked so much quality and restaurant was so empty. Truffle pasta (too small of portion) didn't taste very truffle-like, added chicken was dry and scant considering it was a $6 add on. My husband felt he should've had a whole breast. Arancini was kinda soft vs crisp, wedge salad was good but had very little bacon (and no pecans) for the price. We had carrot cake for dessert, but it was incredibly sweet and not understanding why it had a huge lump of orange marmalade on the side. And didn't like that we bought a bottle of wine we couldn't keep with us at the table. A $90 bill for what we felt was very average quality food we could've gotten else where for much less. We really expected more. After living in Dallas and Austin, we've been to plenty of nice "city" restaurants. But this is not a city restaurant and they shouldn't be charging city prices. They just aren't up to that par. (We'd rather make a 40 min drive to Los Pinos Ranch Winery, where the Chophouse's chef used to work ((who no longer has a chef)) has a much better quality of food and very much worth the $) We will never go back. We have no clue to how they even stay in business. read more

A bright spot in the otherwise dull and predictable culinary desert of NE Texas. This menu and space had me thinking I was in Portland or Brooklyn. Seriously, get off FB and make a day trip to Mt. Vernon. Finally some original coolness in Texas beyond the Austin vortex. read more

I have eaten at Morton's, Ruth's Chris, and Jeff Ruby's in Nashville, St. Louis, and Indiapolis, so I have had good food. I don't know what the issues were in the kitchen when we visited the Chop House Saturday night for a birthday celebration, but the Steaks and the Prime rib were very full of fat. If those 2 steaks were representative of the Japanese beef, I will stick with my American beef. The 2 prime ribs had a very poor flavor also. We left over a quarter of each entree on the plate as fat. The service was good from the waitress and the salads and desserts were good, but no one from management ever checked on us, until the comment card was read later. It definitely was not an enjoyable evening to pay that much for the poor quality meat that was served. read more

You will be hard pressed to find a finer steak in Dallas and definitely won't find anywhere better between Dallas and Little Rock along I-30. Filet was perfectly seasoned and cooked medium rare with a nice crust. Brussels sprouts are a must. Nice selection of affordable wines. We have just moved to Mt Vernon We made reservations for dinner for 7pm on Saturday We had invited our friends from Houston to come an Celebrate our anniversary with them. We ordered a bottle of wine an appetizers enjoyed them, We asked about bread an was told that our waitress was having a hard time getting them. We watched as the chef came out an visit with several tables even the one right beside us an the one in front of us not even a smile from him for us. After sitting there for over 2 hours an watching people get served that came in well after us we still had no food!!! We then talked to person after we were told that there was still a table ahead of our order which would have put us being there for 3 hours before food came. We were seated well before a table of 12 were seated an they got all their food before us an seemed to be treated very well as well as 4 other tables of people an we still had no food. I will say they did comp food to take home but it was not a good experience. read more

We've visited the Chophouse twice with our family, and both meals were exceptional! Food is prepared perfectly, from crab cakes and salads to steaks (unfortunately, my 11 year old LOVES the $30 filet!) to an off menu pan seared duck or simple but amazing off menu spaghetti for our six year old. The staff is warm, attentive, and the chef and his team are incredible. He routinely walks the floor, chats up guests, and ensures the experience is perfect. And so far, our visits have been just that. By far the best restaurant we've found in East Texas near Mt Pleasant/Mt Vernon/Pittsburg/Winnsboro. We will be back! read more

This place has a great atmosphere for a small town in this historic building. The service was not great, but what we expected for East Texas. My wife I ordered the same things, filets cooked medium. When it got to the table, it was a ribeye and a filet....waiter turned it in wrong, but we accepted it since we didn't want to wait. I ordered a cocktail and had to keep asking for it, finally got it 20 minutes later. The steaks were just OK, but extremely over priced! We tried it.....but we won't be back!
