The food was delivered in a timely manner and was fantastic. My wife had seafood and I had a steak. Both were cooked perfectly as ordered and delicious. This food was excellent! This was the best steak I've tried in a long time, and the chicken was great too. The meat here is nice and tender. They really go above and beyond when it comes to quality. What a lovely, and special place! We visited The Chophouse this weekend for the first time and had a great time. The building and the decor has a great environment. The building was built in 1912 and still has a working, manual elevator that was put in the building to carry model T's in for service. Our meal was delicious! The tempura asparagus is a great starter; I had a NY Strip that was cooked perfectly. My husband had the chicken fried chicken which looks amazing! This is a true family owned establishment...The owner and his wife were there, she came over to our table to welcome us and gave us the history about the building. After our meal we hung out in the bar area and had one more drink and visited with the owners, who are so nice a warm. Definitely this place a try- keep up the great work Chophouse! read more

*second review* We had been here previously and the experience was not that great. So trying out as it was just a regular Friday with no special event. My husband and I tried the Chophouse out again from dinner. Service: Not bad our waitress came and brought us our drinks and dinner with no issues. The actual time of getting our food is a different story. Same as last time LONG time periods between items. Which honestly I'm not expert here but the menu is somewhat limited. There is not a huge selection of items. So to have longer than expected timeframes baffles me. Food: We ordered an appetizer the tempura asparagus that came with bacon hollandaise dip. Not bad, there was only like 5 on the plate. Price to the amount of food definitely not worth it. For dinner I ordered the filet medium rare which came with a potato and the vegetable of the day which was broccoli. The steak came out much closer to medium which I kept didn't want to wait long to eat. The broccoli was super cold which I did send back to have them heat up. Then the potato was a "butter" potato. I am sure there is another name for it. Asked it to be loaded which was not much to account for there so asked for more of the dressing items for my potato. My husband got the sea bass which was REALLY SPICY. He thought based on the description it would be closer to what you would get at a Thai restaurant "sweet chili". He didn't care for it and said he wouldn't order again. We skipped their dessert as the options were the same that we had last time we were there and didn't like it. All in all meh. Atmosphere: The restaurant is in an old "historic" building so that alone gives them the this is cool vibe. There are a few pictures on the wall of old Mt Vernon but that's about it. They have A LONG way to go to make this place awesome. With just a little extra time and a few bucks they could make this place where you want to be. There was only a few tables filled during prime Friday night dinner. **there is also a burger place and pizza place in the square. They were PACKED! That alone speaks volumes and hope this place makes it. They just need to get some key items updated and in place to make them successful. read more

Took my amazing wife here for dinner. Made reservations on line seamlessly. Arrived a couple minutes late and were immediately seated. My wife had the filet mignon with baked potato and broccoli, I had the pasta and chicken. Both dishes were served very promptly. The filet was melt in your mouth good as is to be expected. The pasta and chicken was very tasty and filling. The waitstaff was very young but clearly well trained. The food was a little pricey but for a special occasion like this, we'll worth it. Not to mention we had no room for dessert!! They will fill you up for sure. Can't say enough about the food! There was only one thing that struck me though, in an upscale restaurant of this caliber, why would you allow the waitstaff to wear shorts and T-shirts? read more

Let me tell you about my visit on 10/9/21. I am an Aggie. I had plans to go out with my Aggie friends in home city of Houston and watch the Bama game. I unfortunately had to be in this small town over the weekend. You can imagine I was not stoked. I decided to make the best of my situation and saw this place here on Yelp and thought maybe they'll have the game playing. So my date and I wore our best A&M swag and came in with no reservation, thinking maybe the bar will be available. Upon coming in, I get greeted by this wonderful lady, and jokingly says to her hostess to give us special attention cause we are Aggies. Right away, I felt right at home. Then, she walks us to the bars, where I see more Aggies, and meet the owner, who is also an Aggie! But, let's forget about the most amazing southern hospitality I've experienced. I got the rib eye steak. I've never been to the moon. Or Mars. Never been to Machu Pichu, seen the pyramids of Giza, or the Eiffel Tower. I've been waiting to try this place for awhile now, but sadly it was very disappointing. My husband had the pork chop which was undercooked. Pork is not a meat you want undercooked. It is also smothered in a mustard sauce, otherwise it lacked flavor. I had the 8oz flat iron steak. It too was very very bland. It was also undercooked from what I ordered and chewy. I would expect a mostly steakhouse type of restaurant to get that right. For my southern tea drinkers, order soda or save the money and order water because the tea was nearly clear and tasted like sugar water anyway. Also the ranch dressing seems to be homemade and thick, but flavor wise was off. We didn't care for it much at all. However the salad was a nice fresh looking mix of greens. If this place weren't so expensive it would be an ok casual dining option. However, for $32.00 per plate, we expected flavor and something to salivate over coming back for. Today was not that day. The staff was super sweet and the building is nicely renovated. I would be willing to try something different some other time if friends wanted to eat here, but it's not on my list to return to otherwise. read more

This restaurant is the crème-de-la-crème. We stopped here on our way to New York from Austin and we had an exquisite experience. The chef and his wife both visited our table several times. They made everything such a personalized wonderful experience. This restaurant has an upscale, decidedly genteel atmosphere, reminiscent of a private club. Everything Chophouse on Bankhead has to offer says "quality," from the heavy wooden/glass front door, the understated name inscribed subtly on the door, the finely carved wood tables, the beautifully unique (but sensible) wine and martini glasses, and the fine service. The food is just amazing. As an appetizer, the tortilla soup and shrimp tacos are pure perfection. As main courses, my husband had the steak frites and I enjoyed the ribs Benedict; one of the most delicious pieces of pork I've ever tasted. The steak is heavenly: my husband described it as tender, juicy and full of flavor. Just when you think you can't eat any more, Chophouse on Bankhead offers a range of special desserts, including a unique strawberry & homemade biscuits with whipped cheese dish and a carmel drizzled pudding with vanilla ice cream-that would make a French pastry chef swoon. Before we left the chef sent us a care package with Banana French toast and home made biscuits. Absolutely to die for. This restaurant is the BEST one ever !! I've never experienced a such good restaurant in my life, congratulations to chef Enam Chowdhury. Excellent quality, service, atmosphere. Everything is well cared for and meticulosity thought. We took my Mother in Law here tonight for her birthday and the service was awful. We had reservations for 7:15 and did not get to leave until after 9:15. The server completely ignored our table and we had to call him over to order. I added a lobster tail to my order and it was absolutely the worst lobster I have ever had. I feel awful that we ruined my Mother in Laws birthday dinner with such an awful experience. read more

When the Chop House first opened three years ago, it was GREAT. Chef Enam had an amazing palate and the menu was an epicurean delight. I gave this place a raving review two and a half years ago, but I take it all back now. Enam left at the front end of the COVID-19 crisis, the owners clearly have no experience in restaurant service, and the menu has degraded to home cooking from a home that I would advise not staying for a meal. In addition to the degradation of the food the current management insists on having live, and extremely loud, local, music during meal service. My wife and I could not hear each other speaking. VERY disappointing! So what once was a elegant dining experience has turned into eating a low country, home cooked meal, in a dance hall setting. Oh yea, the music isn't that good either, unless you like open cowboy cords strummed in a drowning fashion that puts cows to sleep. The servers are very professional, and I feel very sad for them, especially when they were physically and verbally abased during the bar brawl two weeks ago. The next time I want a great dining experience, I'll drive two hours to Dallas. read more

Wonderful food on Monday night at the bar. The service was outstanding, especially, from the bartender, Smitty. He makes a very mellow Old Fashioned and the wine list is excellent. They have many labels that are long gone from establishments in bigger cities. You will feel like you are in a private club full of your best friends everyone is so friendly. Most nights the owners are on hand to make sure everything runs smoothly. Food is reasonably priced for the quality and the menu has plenty of variety for the pickiest patron. Also, I recommend the Red Velvet cake. The slice I had on Monday was to die for. The Chophouse on Bankhead is a must for people who live in East Texas. We visited on a Friday night with a party of 4. We had an excellent meal with exceptional service. The appetizers were perfectly prepared, my steak was well prepared and tasted great. The desserts were really good as well. The service and the atmosphere was friendly, prompt, and amazing. Everyone from the waitress to the manager and all the way up to the owner made a point of visiting the table and checking on our meal and our level of satisfaction. My only complaint, if I had to find a negative, would be the limited beer selection. Their bar is well stocked with premium liquors and their wine selection is good (according to my wife), but the beer selection is limited. Adding a few craft beers (Texas beers in particular) would make this a perfect restaurant. We will certainly be back and have no hesitation in giving it a 5 star recommendation. read more

Whenever our travels take us to Mt Vernon, TX we always dine at The Chophouse on the historic square. Excellent waitstaff and delicious food. We celebrated our grandson's high school graduation by dining at The Chophouse over Memorial weekend. There were around 30 of us and the service was awesome! Fine dining in Mt Vernon! This upscale steakhouse has exceeded my expectations every time I've had the pleasure of dining there. The lump crab cakes are a good portion and would be good for an appetizer or a small meal. They are fresh and filled with tender morsels of crab. My husband has gotten the COB salad/ large portion, heaped with toppings/ and enjoyed it. Being a proud carnivore, he consistently orders the Akaushi Ribeye which comes with a well cooked baked potato. The steak isn't huge but cooked to perfection. The shrimp and grits are a flavorsome bowl swimming in butter and fresh shrimp! So good. And the lobster Mac n cheese was rich and decadent. The roast Jidori chicken is a fan favorite and is cooked as it is ordered so it takes a few minutes to get it. I appreciate their constant attention to freshness and brilliant seasoning! I don't mind waiting because the chef is making my meal. The service is friendly and excellent. I consistently change the sides or substitute one cheese for another but the servers get involved and actually help me craft my perfect meal! This isn't A chain restaurant. It isn't frozen fast food. Portions are meant to be enjoyed in one sitting and prices reflect gourmet offerings. The food is phenomenal and the atmosphere is something that makes you feel at home. Carly is the server as ask for every time, and she is hands down the best server we have had at any establishment! When we decide to go in for a few drinks, we always sit at the bar and cut up with our good friend Smitty! Man can he make some drinks!!! I am a big time "Old fashioned" kind of guy and he makes the best ones in the state of Texas. I dare you to try it! Steaks are unmatched, great cuts of meat and cooked to perfection every time.
