My friend and I tried the restaurant for the first time and had a very nice experience. The restaurant is really beautiful inside and very clean. We enjoyed our food. It came out quickly and it was delicious and fresh. We had enough for leftovers the next day. The pricing seemed reasonable for what you get. My only criticism is I think there were only two servers working that night and it did get busy. We had to grab someone to ask for a second drink when we were almost finished eating. I have gone for the lunch buffet and ordered some take out from them as well. Each time the food was tasty. I like that they also have Indo-Chinese options on the buffet and menu as well. It is very clean and nicely decorated inside. Even getting the buffet the servers are friendly and attentive, getting drinks and answering any questions about the food as well. This 26-foot wall of food is an ever-changing smorgasbord of family recipes from the Punjab region in northwestern India. Raj Kumar opened Clay Oven in Kimbrook Village Square at 8417 Oswego Road, a couple doors down from Tops supermarket. The modest storefront wedged between a liquor store and gym is deceivingly large. The two dining rooms beyond the full-service bar can seat more than 80 customers. The all-Indian staff here prepares the food using only fresh meats, vegetables and seafood. Nothing comes prepackaged, they say. Even the curry powders used to spice each dish are fresh. As the restaurant's name suggests, the food is cooked inside a tandoor, a cylindrical clay oven. The wife and I stopped in for lunch today and loved it. The space inside is much bigger than it looks outside, it's clean and beautifully decorated, and has plenty of seating. Plenty of options on the buffet - vegetarian dishes, noodles, rice, curry chicken, even some lamb and dessert options. We tried a little bit of everything, and everything was delicious, although my wife and I could've used a little more hear, but we understand buffets need to appeal to the masses. Our first visit we went Valentines Day when they opened at 4:30 and were seated right away behind a party of 4. By the time we finished eating, or should I say grazing, the multiple pots of tasty spicy Hindu foods and desserts with fresh salad bar all you can eat $15.95 on Wednesdays we were happily full and tastefully satisfied. Wow, what a find! A family member is on paxlovid and can't taste anything right. So she craved some flavorful Indian cuisine. Clay Oven hit the spot! We ordered a hell of a spread: Veg Biryani, chicken tikka masala, lamb roganjosh, lamb kadai (spicy), garlic & Plain naan, and veg samosas. I sampled everything but the lamb kadai as I didn't want super spicy. My brother in law ordered that and he liked it a lot. Not so spicy that you can't breathe or taste anything, he was happy with spice level. The vegetable biryani was quite a nice portion and flavorful. The chicken tikka masala also had a nice amount of chicken and a very flavorful gravy that's awesome for dipping naan in. My lamb rogan josh was tasty with a decent amount of lamb and nice sauce. Maybe I'll get medium spice next time? Naan was fresh. Food was ready when promised. If I lived in the area I'd check out their buffet for sure. Indian food isn't something I have a ton of experience with. I went with a group of 8 people total. I had no idea what to order and the menu really didn't help explain anything in a way that made it easy to decide. "Rice with chicken and spices" isn't very informative so I tried to quickly Google indian food to find the name of a dish that looked good... When it became my turn to order, luckily last, I tried to ask a couple questions but the server didn't seem very interested in helping me understand or choose. I ended up going with the vegetable biryani since I could find an image online that made it seem like it was something along the lines of fried rice... It was good, but I'm not sure I'd order it again. It was slightly spicy and came with some kind of yogurt coleslaw sauce I assume to take the heat edge off... We tried to order drinks but there was no one at the bar until one of us was standing there for a while. They never came back to fill our drinks (those that fit drinks besides water). I dropped my spoon and they were super on top of getting me a new one ... but the checks we had to ask for after waiting 30 minutes? Overall a very confusing experience. This large buffet was pretty crowded on Saturday with people waiting for the door to open. There is a great selection of dishes, some spicy and some mild. I had the vegetable pakora, made nice and small perfect bites. The tandoori chicken was moist and the chili chicken had just the right amount of spiciness. Being a vegetarian, I can only comment about the vegetarian food. The food was excellent, the facility was excellent, and the prices are just right. I went there on a suggestion from a friend. My husband asked for high spice level and said he would have liked it even spicier but I was very happy with the little kick I got in my mild dish. Very cool water fountain at the entry, and spacious booths. 4 stars for poor service. I'm giving it 3 stars because I'm hopeful. This was my favorite place to eat, I came here almost weekly with my girlfriend until we went to explore some other places. This is my first time back in a few months and everything has went downhill aside from the flavor of the food. It took us 5 minutes before someone came to greet us and seat us to which he simply pointed to a table. Took even longer for someone to come take our order, we waited 30 minutes for our food and when we got it it was almost room temp. After a few minutes of eating it's cold and normally it comes out steaming hot. I'm currently writing this as I sit here with no one checking on us, no one refilling our drinks, and a line of people not being spoken to that are waiting to be seated. I can understand a rough night and maybe short staffing but the least you can do is check on costumers or be nice to them. I'm not sure if I'll be coming again which makes me incredibly sad. read more

The star for me was the Chili chicken, not too hot that you couldn't enjoy the flavor! But we ordered online for a pick up (several hours in advance), arrived at the scheduled time, and waited 45 minutes for the food. The explanation: "there are a lot of orders." I moved to Syracuse last year and have tried a few Indian Restaurants, while they were good I haven't found THE place to go to until I went to the Clay Oven today. We came for dinner and it was very quiet and cozy. The staff is very friendly and always makes sure you're good and don't need anything else. My friend (who has never had Indian food before) and I came and LOVED IT! It was the best Chicken Tikka Masala I have ever had. With your meal you get shared rice for the table, which they can replenish if you run out. We also got the Gulab Jamun (donut like) for dessert and it was YUMMY! It reminded me of a warm mini donut. We ordered some chicken tiki masala, garlic naan bread, shrimp pakora app, tandoori mixed grill, dark meat masala, and chicken makhni. It all came with 3 big trays of basmati rice. I'll have to say, it was all fresh and tasty. I can't remember the last time I had Indian cuisine to compare it with. It was very good indeed. This Indian restaurant is a welcome addition to the Clay area. It is located conveniently at the Tops plaza on the corners of Route 31 & Route 57. As soon as their 'Coming Soon' sign was spotted, I was anticipating their opening. Chef Kumar says they've had a soft opening the past couple of weeks. What better way to try a place than their buffet? Buffet is served only during lunch and they are closed Tuesdays at the time of this review. The staff here definitely make sure you're taken care of. They had a big selection of dishes along their buffet line. They change it up day to day, but one of their most popular dishes, chicken tikka masala, is a mainstay. I would say that most Indian buffets in the Syracuse area have been on the spicier side. I don't mind heat, but I know some people do. This buffet is definitely mild in the spiciness, which I think is perfect for the main crowd. I feel it allows more people to try the different dishes. If you want spicier, you can always order from their menu. I am looking forward to eating here again and again. I'll be bringing my family and friends. read more

Fabulous new restaurant in the Tops plaza at the intersection of Route 31 and 57. We arrived on Friday evening and it was bustling. It's great to see that Indian food Now seems to be more main stream. The restaurant does not yet have a liquor license so there were folks who brought their own bottles of wine and the waiters uncorked them and poured them into wine glasses. There is a liquor store conveniently located right next to The ClayOven. The menu has quite a variety of dishes some of which I've never seen at an Indian restaurant. There seems to be a little bit of an Asian influence. We started with steamed vegetarian dumplings and chilli pakora. The dumplings were delicious and served with a great sauce. The chili pakora.... well, you have to really enjoy spicy fried food to eat this. My husband who loves spicy food ate half of them and took the other half home. I tasted a small piece which was a little bit too hot for me but very tasty. There are a huge selection of appetizers and soups. For means I tried tandoori salmon. It was served on a sizzling platter with peppers and onions much like a fajita would be. They were large chunks of salmon perfectly cooked a little crispy on the outside and really tender and moist on the inside. This was served with a generous dish of basmati rice and peas and a delicious sauce that was like a creamy tomato one I usually get with paneer. A super delicious dish. My husband ordered Rajma Masala, Red kidney beans in a special sauce. It was one of the most flavorful bean dishes we've had at an Indian restaurant. of course we had to have some naan, which was wonderful and tasty. At the conclusion of the meal our waiter brought us a small dish of Khmer, Indian rice pudding. The menu is expensive and there is plenty for everyone including meat eaters, vegetarian and vegans. There are also many specialty drinks and desserts. They have a lunch buffet for $12.50 that we will surely check out. The website is not specific about days and hours but our waiter told us they are closed on Tuesdays. My only complaint is that the food could've been served hotter.
