The best salon. I have never been able to sit in a salon without getting sick from all the chemical smells. Mauricio is the first salon with no chemical smells and fresh air. I have a chronic illness that causes sensitivity to chemicals and so i know that Mauricio's has clean air. i am fine there. For the last few years Andres has done my hair. He is incredible and a kind soul- he always gives me a beautiful hair cut and color. Maravilloso! I also have a neck injury. Andres and the other people who work in the salon are very compassionate and careful when i have to put my neck back to use the sink. They have gone out of their way to try to help me with this. Before finding this salon i tried to go to a woman's home salon in nyc. She uses organic hair color but she was rude and not compassionate. her salon sink was the sink from her bathroom so i hurt my neck. it was an awful experience. Because of this I am even more grateful for finding Mauricios salon. Organic hair care is important and healthy but also the people who work on you should be non toxic too. All the people i have met who work here are lovely. Five stars. read more

After two great visits, they ruined my hair. I spent years growing out layers and he cut short ones without asking and I was left with this weird looking brown tail. I asked for a refund after sending pictures but nothing can grow the 5 inches back. Also, the two tone look was not worth the hundreds of dollars they charge. read more

Most amazing blowout! I recently bought a Glit City deal for two blowouts. I used my voucher during my recent trip to NYC. That night I went to an event called, "Queen of the Night." Anyway I have very curly thick hair, and the humid weather doesn't help. This blowout lasted for 4 days! My hair didn't expand! If you have curly thick hair this is the salon for you . Having tried every barber south of 34th street (and having found some talented ones!), I always felt that there was something left to be desired when leaving the barber shop. Though they were skilled with scissors or had charming personalities, I never quite got what I wanted out of a cut, despite bringing in pictures. So I changed tactics and came to Mauricio, who as a stylist, and not a barber, nailed it on the first try and gave me a couple styling tips to think about to manage my frizzy mess during a humid summer. The receptionist was incredibly charming, and the space, unlike most barbershops and salons, was relaxed and intimate, not loud and full of hustle-bustle. New long-term client here. I love Mauricio Hair. I went here last year for a Keratin and my hair came out amazing. I never felt weird or out of place even when my hair literally pointed straight up when it was being dried for the process. I need to make my appointment ASAP for another Keratin. It's pricey but worth the money due to their good quality products. I tried to be cheap and have gone to other places and....fail. Highly recommend Mauricio hair for all persons but especially for pregnant and post partum breastfeeding mamas! I am a firm believer that most stylist are either strong in hair coloring or cut but rarely will you find someone gifted with both talents. Well Malvin is that gem! I first came to see him towards the end of my 2nd trimester in my pregnancy. It's hard going 9+ months without coloring your hair so I was very happy to find this salon. He cut and colored my hair. Would NOT recommend this salon to anyone!! They absolutely destroyed my hair. I bought the keratin treatment on gilt city and made a special trip up to NYC just to get this done (I'm from Virginia.) I have naturally curly hair and it is slightly frizzy. The description of the keratin treatment on their website says: "Eliminate frizz, define curls and enhance locks with a smoothing keratin application. Unlike traditional treatments, Mauricio's keratin treatment acts more as a smoother than a straightener." Yeah... No. Definitely made my hair straight on the ends and limp and lifeless all around. My hair looks like shit. I called and explained my concerns and they said my stylist would be in contact with me...never heard from him. I called back again and asked for my money back. They did give me my money back but I'm EXTREMELY unhappy with the way they handled this and no stylist ever contacted me to try and figure out why this happened. My hair looked amazing after my highlights. Amy did a great job and I've been getting compliments ever since. The reason I'm giving the place 4 instead of 5 stars was timing. I think they were overbooked or running late that Saturday because I had to wait for a while to be seen when I arrived. After they washed my hair, I had to wait some more as Amy was not ready for me yet. The whole thing took about 4 hours which is way too long for highlights. Mauricio's hair cut was amazing, though. I have really, REALLY thick, shoulder-length hair and it takes a lot of skill to know how to layer, thin out and shape my hair so it doesn't look choppy. My hair looked gorgeous when I walked out of the studio, so I was really happy - but the real test is how it looks over the next week or two. Well, i'm almost a week out and it's still a great hair cut. The studio itself was also really fancy - small but very nicely decorated. The only place I will ever go for my hair from now on. The space is GORGEOUS, it's cozy and Mauricio has utilized every square inch to make it modern and comfortable. From the moment I walked in, Wendy greeted me by first name and was so friendly. She is really lovely and a pleasure to be around. Mauricio is a pure artist. I came in with 3 inch dark roots leading into harsh brass blonde. It was a mess. He looked at my hair for longer than any other stylist ever has. Played with it, looked at all of the layers and every single inch of color to make sure his plan was perfect. I could just feel him strategizing - you can tell this is his passion. I said, "I want the root color brought down like an ombre so that the blonde blends and isn't as harsh." He asked if I still wanted all blonde at the end or if I wanted dark pieces as well, and I told him to surprise me. I really trusted him within the first 20 minutes of meeting him.. ...And I'm SO glad I did. What he did to my hair was magical. I've never had or even SEEN color this good. I now have this gorg ashy chocolate with honey tones and blonde peeking through at the ends. Everything blends perfectly and looks like a work of art. I can't stop staring at it. I had worked with Maurcio on a few print ads I was photographing and he is a pleasure to work with. I cannot begin to describe how much I love the way my hair looks. The level of skill Melvin has is amazing. And even seeing other women walking out of the salon, I can vouch for how amazing all the other stylists at Mauricio Hair Salon are. I have had terrible experiences, albeit few, at different salons in terms of coloring my hair. The first time I went in I was very nervous to color my hair so I explained to Melvin that I wanted my hair to be subtle and not blonde. He did an amazing job and did exactly what I asked for with a level of skill and artistry I have never seen/experienced before. After seeing the result and trying it for a few days, I decided I was going to take the plunge and go full on balayage. What he did before was amazing don't get me wrong! It was exactly what I asked. But I felt like I trusted him with my hair enough to take the plunge into doing something more drastic. I went back and the results were exactly what I was picturing. Just a great experience overall. Mauricio is super sweet and talented. Although walking in to the building (under some construction) wasn't the prettiest of sights, the salon itself is luxurious and modern. Can't wait to go back. Updated: Last appointment was just for a blow out which was great. I love love love the salon itself. But my haircut and color did not live up to my expectations. I think the biggest issue is that Mauricio was running late and it was a bit rushed toward the end. Met with Melvin with my hair curly who suggested I just get low lights & came to the appointment with my hair straight. The current color of my hair was different from how you seen it when it's curly so he was able to adjust & I am IN LOVE with the color! Mauricio and his team have every precaution implemented, handing me a medical mask when I walked in, and the advantage of a small salon is very few people there. I went here for a cut and color due to the glowing reviews and the fact that they are an organic salon. Marvin is a lovely and talented fellow. He took time to talk to me about my hair and was very attentive to my hair needs, which I really appreciated. He really listens when you say you don't want too much taken off, which is not always the case! The checkout/payment was a bit daunting. First of all, make sure that if there is any kind of discount or "special" mentioned on their website, you are very clear. When I made my appointment over the phone, I mentioned the 'Valentine's Day' special email I received from them (I believe 15%) and when it came time to pay it was conveniently forgotten. When I mentioned it again, the woman (who was rather aloof) acted as if it was a burden. There was no breakdown of charges for me to see ( I should have asked) and I didn't want to make a fuss, but I'm pretty sure they also did not give me the online promotion "for any color service, get a free blowout." I had an idea of pricing from their website, but have to say was surprised that my bill was almost $400. When I asked about leaving a tip (I paid with my credit card), the woman didn't even look up when she informed me, "we prefer tips in cash." So does "prefer" mean no?? At that point I just wanted to get out, so gave Marvin all the cash I had, which was really lame because it wasn't even 20%, which he deserved. So overall, nice salon and if you have money to burn (and cash!), go for it. read more

This place is amazing. Even before I set foot in the place I received fantastic customer service from Wendy, who was super quick and friendly in setting up the appointments. When I came in, she greeted me by name (my first time here) and was really sweet about helping me with my wet bags and umbrella (I got caught in a downpour on my way to the salon). She was really patient when I took some time trying to dry myself off in the bathroom and had a coffee ready and waiting for me when I sat down. Mauricio himself is awesome. He's very honest about hair styling, coloring and maintenance and he was fun to chat with. I came in with a gilt city deal for full highlights, but he didn't skimp out on the foils or color at all. And when someone puts in the time to color my hair well, I really appreciate it b/c I have a lot of hair. I HAD dyed my hair blonde over a month ago, but came into the salon with dirty blonde/light brown hair with dark roots showing (I tried to cover up my roots myself and it made my hair darker... bad move, me) and I told Mauricio I wanted to go as blonde as possible. He said it would be a lot of upkeep because my roots grew in quickly and my hair had a tendency to turn orange, but if I was down for it, he'd do it. I asked him to fix my roots and the cost was tacked on to the tax for the gilt deal (it was a very fair price considering that only a single process was needed and not double process to make my dark roots blonde). I was really impressed that this organic color worked really well; Mauricio spent more time foiling and painting my hair than I spent sitting getting my hair processed. I felt like I had a nice mix of conversation and having time to read on my Kindle. It's not a crazy hectic salon that raises your blood pressure or induces anxiety; Mauricio's is quite the opposite. It was a little busy that day because there were just 2 people in the studio (I didn't realize Wendy was not a hair stylist; she did a super thorough job glazing and washing my hair) and other clients were coming in and out during my salon visit. While I was processing, a girl came in for a hair cut and Mauricio did a great job on her cut, too. It's really relaxing and intimate and you don't feel rushed or like you're bothering anyone. There are only 3 chairs and THE most luxurious hair washing station ever. (I mean, the seat is a couch that reclines and adjusts to your height so you don't have to crane your neck getting shampoo'd.) I loved LOVED how my hair came out when I was done. The color correction job was perfect and I got a great blow dry, too (luckily it stopped raining so I could properly turn heads). I'm really looking forward to coming in again in a few weeks for the upkeep on this blonde hair. And if/when I get pregnant, this is the salon to go to for safe and stunning organic color. read more

One star only for the very zen ambiance. I would not recommend this salon if you have sensitive skin or allergies to the usual chemicals in hair dyes. My hair is still breaking from the over processing which cost me hundreds of dollars. Went here for what they advertise as an organic luxury hair salon and left with a chemical cut and burning scalp. They highlighted my already blonde hair - assuring me it's organic non damaging products but they used bleach ! Then on my roots they mixed the wrong colors so that part of my hair came out bright orange. To fix this they had to put toners in twice which burned and itched my scalp horribly. So my roots were finally more blonde than orange but the new highlighted parts were silver blonde! I could tell they were also freaked out and embarrassed about the end results as they whispered it in Spanish to each other without realizing I understood what was said and pointed to my scalp. However once I got back to the chair, Mauricio came by trying to convince me how great it looks and that my skin coloring goes great with my strawberry blonde hair which is exactly what I said I didn't want. To add more insult to injury the person ringing me up had the nerve to tell me the salon usually charges for the toners, however as a favor to me for being a new customer they would only charge for one toning treatment! read more

Carina may just be my new girl for blow outs. The entire staff was accommodating- making new coffee, offering magazines, throwing out compliments for good measure. The ambience is zen-like, and while the building has a bit of remodeling to be done, the salon itself is a small oasis tucked away on the 11th floor with views of the Flatiron Building. Carina gave one of the most relaxing head massages, while some salons skimp on that during the wash, or ask the dreaded "Would you like to add a head massage?" (I'm looking at you, DryBar...) I left with super sleek hair without the use of a straightener, and a day later, it still looks great. The one small issue I experienced was the timeliness. I waited 15 minutes, and while typically that would be okay if I was doing a full hair treatment, a one hour blowout ended up making me watch the time, as I was cutting a meeting afterward very close. All in all, I would come back here for a cut and definitely more blowouts. read more

So, I have mixed feelings about this place. Marvin did my hair color, which I really like, but when I went to pay, they quoted me at $150. I'd asked twice for a quote prior to that and was told $110 both times. Mauricio informed me that it was because the blow out was not included, which I thought was relatively crazy - how are you supposed to check a person's color after dying their hair without blowing it out? A blow out, to me, is standard and thus should be (and most often is - this is the only instance I've had of it not being) included in the price of the service being offered. I was never informed of this additional cost, and I was also never given the option of not doing it, which I likely would've taken (I typically hate how my hair looks after a blow-out, and this was no exception). Other than that, the salon was quite disorganized. When I made my consultation appointment, they told me they'd "definitely" be able to do my color after, and when I finished the consult, they told me I'd have to make an appointment for a different day, which was frustrating, having already booked the time out on my calendar. The weirdest thing, though, was the indifference to either of these service issues on the part of the staff. There was no apology for the $40 inflation, no apology for the change of appointment. All of that said, I'm mostly happy with my color (I asked for a shade of purple, and while it's subtler than I was hoping for, it's flattering and cool enough looking). read more

I've been wanting to try balayage and so i bought a gilt voucher for it. I didn't specifically request Mauricio when I booked the appointment and so, Amy was my stylist. Amy is INCREDIBLE! I showed her a few pictures and she immediately understood the style and look I was going for. She explained the process of balayage and what the upkeep would be going forward (which is minimal). Then she got started. 2 hours later, my hair was transformed! She did an amazing job, it looks natural and the color was exactly what I was looking for. I'm so impressed and it's been a week since and I love it even more. Top it off, I'm asian with super black hair, so it's always a challenge to create natural looking highlights but Amy did it! so a 2.5 I guess?? So I waited until I had two blowdry appointments because my first one was really bad and I was hoping for a better second appointment. I bought a gilt voucher for two blowdrys. First- everyone is really nice- the salon is cute- clean and comfortable. It was very hard to get an appointment both times as calls never got returned after sever attempts both times. They do reply by email but that takes times too. I want to call- have someone answer- then make an appointment. simple. The first blow dry was so flat I did not know what to say. My hir air dries with body- so was really disappointed because I had a date that night. I emailed asking f there was anything I could do and the response was hair spray on the roots. That of course did not work so up in a pony tail it went- that was a waste of my time and money and a $20 tip. ( who cares if it was good). Amy did my second blow out- much better- I didn't have a wow factor at all but- it had more body than before. In all fairness I do need a hair cut but I was still hoping for more wave. I will say though- A tiny bit of dry shampoo on day two and It got me through the day. Of course nothing fancy but it was not flat on the roots- just a bit straight as you would expect. I am on day 3- more dry shampoo (since I did not go to work today and 3 days is a lot for me). a loose pony tail and it's still "presentable". I might try it again with Amy but I am just used to my regular guy giving me killer hair for 3 days and a pony tail on day 4. Then again he charges $100 per blow out alone plus tip etc and he's not as close to me. I just want a killer blow dry by my house I can walk to- again they are very very nice. read more

Came all the way from Westchester County as referred by Organic Olivia. A total of 1.5 hour commute to get to the location and taking 20 minutes to find parking. As I made the appointment for 2pm, I was 30 minutes late due to the traffic I did not expect. As other salons I went to, they try to accommodate and at least still do what you would like to do to satisfy their clientele. They also called me twice to change my appointment to an earlier time (which I could not do as I tutor and work at the hospital in the morning), to accommodate their own schedule rather than to be professional and not call their potential clients about changing their appointments. Very unsatisfied with this salon. Do not recommend. read more

Spa like treatment is what you get at Mauricio Hair! The place is very small, but you will forget about it because of the great service you get here. I went with a GILT Voucher for a wash, cut and blowdry. I also heard about them at the green festival and was curious to visit a salon that used organic products. My favorite part was the shampoo station...big comfy reclining chair! Marvin cut my hair and was very sweet and professional. Gave really great tips for my hair. I left with a great blowout and my hair smelled wonderful! The place never smelled toxic with those strong fumes that other salons usually have. Left very relaxed and happy with my do.
