I absolutely love this place. The shop was clean, cute, and organized. The owner, Alicia, is so sweet and helpful. The store has a cool and comfortable vibe. I loved the edgy look and colors of the shop. I was worried they may have trouble with my complicated/coarse and curly hair but they didn't! They are highly professional and prepared for everything. She is the real deal, born and bred New Yorker, East Village style. Alica has seen it ALL. Truly. She makes the worlds best ponytail hair. Her cuts grow out fabulously, so you never look shabby. Veronika has SAVED me! I was looking to do some drastic changes in my look and was brewing the idea of doing the bayalage long enough. I never colored my hair in my life and this is supposed to be a big step for me. Finally I was bored to be always with the same hairstyle and was ready to change. I checked different places for the bayalage effect and was astonished to find out that it cost a fortune! I never spend more than $50 on my haircuts. So I just went to my regular cheap place in Chinatown where I cut my hair. Assuming if they are Asian they also know how to color well asian hair because I'm Asian as well. My hairstylist has dyed ash blond hair and it's looks great on him. That made me assure that it should be fine to color my hair with him. I asked the price and it was much much cheaper than in other places. I showed him a picture and he told me:"It's easy!". So we started the process. When he washed my hair I realized what a mistake I made. I had profound stripes, three colors, different uneven patches, and it was way too blond of what I expected. But still thinking maybe it's just I didn't get used to see myself with the change I decided to let it go and walked away. Following days I felt really uncomfortable with my new hairstyle. My bayalage felt cheap. I called different other places to try to fix it and they would tell me even higher prices to fix a bad bayalage. I don't have enough finances to go to fancy hairsalons. So I though I just would color my hair brown and let go the idea of new look. On the way to the salon I Notice Hair Queen salon and decided to ask how much it will cost there. First thing that attracted me was The salon interior. It was very cozy. Veronica greeted me and right away made me feel very comfortable. She start checking my hair and gave me a great detailed consultation. She gave me all the realistic outcomes and was checking the hair like 20'times to make sure how she can work on it. So it made me feel very secure that I'm in hands of a perfectionist. The price was also cheaper than in other places. So I decided to give a try and fix my terrible coloring with Veronica. We agreed if the outcome wouldn't satisfy me she will just color me back to my natural brown. And Voila! She did Magic! She fixed everything and made me look FANTASTIC! I will only go to her to make my bayalage. I so glad I discovered Veronica and the Hair Queen salon. P.S. Don't repeat my mistake in saving money for the Bayalage. I've been getting a haircut from Janaan for the last eight years. There was a brief time when she left for the other coast and during this time I was forced to try different salons. I tried the most instagram-worthy, the coolest the most "whatever-ist" and was disappointed consistently. Then....Janaan came back to NYC and joined up at Hair Queen. Not only does my hair look great again(she had to correct some BAD blonde balayage that had turned yellow!) the cut always looks good when I walk out of the salon and then.... keeps getting better. For the next 3 months. Hair Queen itself is an adorable little shopfront that maximizes the space it has with great people, a fun people-watching view out the window and amazing cuts and color. Hair Queen's stylist Chicago is a godsend. I have really tricky hair to work with. It grows in totally different directions over my head. It's coarse and curly. I don't trust many people with my hair. I'm the type who sticks with a stylist for years once I find one. I had been getting my hair cut by a friend who moved update. He recommended I try Hair Queen and, specifically, their stylist Chicago. Hair Queen is now MY spot and Chicago is my go to stylist. He is the only person I allow to touch my hair. He actually listens to what you say, delivers what you want and makes it look better than you may have imagined. Other stylists at other salons will look at you blankly when you say, "don't take off too much please" and they'll just hack the hell out of you. Not Chicago. He listens. And he is skilled. I always leave happy and confident. Oh man, and it's affordable. It is AFFORDABLE. No need to go to Fekkai and spend half your rent money on your hair just to look good. And now I don't feel relegated to cheaper tacky spots like Jeffrey Stein -- where nobody seems to have any edge or sense of aesthetics. Hair Queen is a great salon and Chicago is an expert stylist. It's chill, personal, affordable & above all: it's more than worth the price. You'll look great and feel even better. And for the record: I don't "Yelp." Ever. But, the good ones deserve recognition. The salon is in a good location and they work around your schedule. They make you feel very comfortable and my cut comes out awesome every time. Alicia is a rockstar hairdresser - after giving me the gorgeous highlights and lowlights that I asked for she told me if in a week I felt that I wanted a few more highlights thrown in to brighten the color just to swing back in and they would be on the house- her main concern was making sure I loved my hair- which I do!
