We came for dinner and had a nice meal. The place is historic, but they do a good job of not making it feel worn. It is a fairly large space with plenty of seating and a bar and felt spacious and clean. Our server Fernanda was very friendly and checked in with us regularly to see how we were enjoying the food as it came out. I started with the duck salad and had the sauerbraten for my entree. The duck salad was tasty with a nice dressing, my only complaint is that it came with 4 thin slices of duck (maybe a bite each). It definitely could have benefited from more duck, especially for a $23 salad. That said, I liked the blue cheese, apples, and cranberries that went with it. My entree was definitely the largest of the group and came with two huge thick potato pancakes, a hefty serving of red cabbage and a good portion of beef. I really enjoyed the dish and was pretty full afterwards. I would absolutely recommend this dish and eat it again. For dessert we tried their special, a mango cake which was very light and pleasant albeit a bit sweet. I would suggest checking/asking about portion sizes before you order as some dishes are smaller than others (the grilled shrimp appetizer is only 4 shrimp, the clams casino is 5 small/medium clams and the crab cake entree is two small to medium sized crab cakes with no sides). So I can see how some people are frustrated with the portions based on the prices. That being said, I would absolutely recommend both the duck salad and sauerbraten. read more

We live in Clinton Twp and The Clinton House was top of the list to visit. Appetizers: crab cake and portobello fries. Crab cake was excellent, all crab, no filler, loved the sauce. Portobello fries were fine, a little dry, but good sauce. Entrees: My husband got the French dip sandwich which I tried..it was okay. Definitely not bad but nothing special. Where the food really fell short was my entree. I got the shrimp and scallop risotto special. It came with two shrimp and "four" scallops, which was two scallops cut horizontally prior to cooking and seared. Scallops were complete rubber and tasted like ammonia, and the shrimp were extremely overcooked. The risotto itself was tasty and I would have it again, but for $40 it was not an acceptable dish. Our waitress was not rude, but not particularly friendly. We loved the vibe and decor of the restaurant, and other staff we interacted with were pleasant. Sitting next to the cozy lit fireplace I enjoyed one of the best dinners here. The South African twin lobster tails were incredible. The bone-in ribeye was cooked perfectly. Ambience and service were superb! Absolutely beautiful inside. We had a party of nine on 4 -16-26 to celebrate my granddaughter's fifth birthday. The food was mediocre and overpriced. (We went a year ago on her fourth birthday and I remember the food being much better. ) We walked in at 6:30 PM and the place was empty. Unusual for a Thursday night. My daughter and I thought the French dip was awful. I filled up on my granddaughter's french fries which were very good. My son-in-law thought the crab cakes were just OK. I got a side order of mashed potatoes, which were good. Not perfect but good. Everyone said the butter was highly salted, and it was almost inedible. We had a wonderful waitress, and she was constantly asking if we needed anything, but that could've been because the place was empty except for our table. What a Great experience. The building, the history, the service and the food were all really good. We basically tripped over this restaurant while exploring the area. From the outside, I had a feeling that I was going to like it. The atmosphere and decor resemble a time hundreds of years ago. Everyone working at Clinton House was super friendly and helpful. The food was very good. We started with the French Onion soup and the Lobster bisque and enjoyed them both. Our entree's consisted of Seafood Newburgh and the Crab cake dinner. I also got a side of potato pancakes. Both were very good. The Newburgh had a flaky pastry crust that was fantastic. My crab cakes were a little smallish but tasted great. Basically all crab. My potato pancakes were awesome. They have a wonderful selection of wines and a good group of craft beers. All in all, a really great experience. I will have to say that it's slightly higher priced than I expected but I'm sure the cost of operating in North Jersey is more than I would expect also. We would definitely return. Every year we come for the Dickens event and always eat here first. That tradition is over. Almost empty dining room, seated next to the only other tables (older diners). My young son was upset and hungry after losing his toy. We waited over 15 minutes -- no greeting, no water, no server. Finally someone came over, not to help, but to tell me to remove my child because another table complained. We left immediately and went to Dora down the street -- greeted warmly, drinks in 2 minutes, great service. The disrespect was shocking. As a human-services professional, I'm appalled at how fast they escalated to kicking out a family instead of simply serving us. Management needs to retrain staff on basic decency and anti-discrimination. We won't be back, and neither will anyone we know who attends Dickens. Shame on you. read more

The Clinton House Inn is a big beautiful restaurant at the heart of Clinton, NJ. It is only a few steps away from the historic Red Mill, which features a museum and is located on the South Branch of the Raritan River with a waterfall. The Clinton House is charming for it's rustic, European decor but can considered a bit dark overall. Many dining rooms are featured, some with window views out to Main Street Clinton. The food and service is consistently good. The negatives are parking can be tight and overall cost can be high, hence the 3 stars. It is worth a visit if you've never been and the Currier and Ives town of Clinton is a great walk after diner! read more

Right from the start, there was no host at the front desk. Waited for several minutes as other wait staff walked by without even asking us if we had been helped yet. Eventually, the bartender came over and stated that she had no idea where the hostess had gone. Waited a few more minutes and were finally seated at our table, by the very nice bartender. Upon taking the initial drink order, the waitress thej left without offering if we would like bread. It was after looking at the menu that I realized you had to pay for bread and butter, which is ridiculous. Any other high-end restaurant, including Ruth's Chris steakhouse and many other classy establishments, always brings this over, just a normal thing for a full service restaurant. The menu was very limited and when the food finally came out, it was not of the quality that I would expect to pay $60 for a very small seafood bake. Three scallops and two shrimp in the whole entree. I've never seen anything lack in quality this badly that is this high priced. Extremely overpriced for the quality and quantity of the food, and very slow. $20 for kids menu mac n cheese? $12 shirley temple? My old fashioned was good, but overpriced. I was at the Clinton for lunch yesterday. I will admit to being taken aback after ordering mussels as an appetizer. It was suggested I order a baguette to accompany the mussels. The Clinton House has been a local favorite for almost 300 years. The quality of everything is top notch and better than most of what is available in the rest of New Jersey. You really get what you pay for here. The prime rib is amazing and they have a full bar with top shelf spirits. They are also vegetarian and vegan friendly too. Checked in with hostess who put our name on the list for the 30 minute wait for our table. Received a text indicating that our table was ready just around the 30 minute mark. Hostess tells us our table is not ready and walks away without any type of explanation. Not a good way to start a dining experience. Waited another 20-30 minutes and the manager corrected the issue and got us a table. Once seated we were informed that 5-6 menu items were not available. No big deal, I'm sure we can find something. Wine we ordered, nope ran out. Side dishes we ordered, nope just ran out.....another not so great start here Clinton House. Oh it gets better. App's show up, no silverware. Have to hunt someone down to get some. Again not a big deal. Just finishing app's and server spills entire tray of food onto our table. It was for the table adjacent to ours. Dishes that didn't spill were served to that table. All of their food should have been remade. Luckily nothing on our table spilled on us. We did have to request for our table to be cleaned from the shrapnel of food and toppings that were left from the plates that spilled on our table. I understand that things happen but it's how you react when they do. Having to ask to have our table cleaned, finding new silverware, getting taken off the wait list by a mistake and just walking away, serving dishes that landed on others tables, lots and lots wrong here. I will say the food was good (what we could order), the manager was good and took care of our bill. If you are going to run a higher end restaurant and charge the prices you do, the service needs to be worth it and unfortunately it is not. read more

Given all the excellent restaurants within a 5 to 10 mile radius of Clinton the Clinton house is a terrible value. The former owner, the current owner's father, presented a wonderful meal at a fair price and was on premise all the time. His son spends most of his time at another restaurant he owns and it shows. Omg. GET THE HOUSE DRESSING. I would pay $20 for their side salad with the house dressing. First of all, the lettuces and veggies on the salad come out crisp and cold, yum. And the famous dressing tastes like a mixture of yellow French dressing and with blue cheese crumbles in it. Just try it, sounds weird but it's a symphony in your mouth. Service is impeccable. Ridiculous really. I asked for a Tito's martini dirty and up with blue cheese olives a few weeks ago. The waitress didn't snarl or say we don't have those olives, she says - never heard of that but I'm sure since we have blue cheese, I can make that happen for you! How accommodating :) The two bartenders are favorites of my parents (been coming here for 30 years). They're married I believe and are just so sweet and very experienced behind the bar in their craft. The bar always has good quality chips too. Like the horseradish cheddar chips. Not like plain lays and stale pretzels. Quality flavored chips and bar snacks- always! The Clinton House is such a cute date spot, although on the very pricey side, you get quality and that's ay-ok with me. What a staple in our community. But since it's located next to a very famous Teri-state wide historical building, a lot of out of towners don't know the Clinton House exists. Which is kind of like money left on the table. My father has his annual company Christmas party here every year and one year my ex boyfriend came and ordered their gigantic Blue Ribbon Steak. It's like $80 or something insane but it was literally like the size of my dog. So tender, so creative, so fun and had the whole table laughing and chatting about it! My son brought me to The Clinton House for my Mother's Day dinner. To say it was disappointing is an understatement. My son ordered the Rib Eye medium, for $85. With that price tag we expected it to be perfect with a couple sides. It was very overdone, no seasoning and no sides. I ordered the filet with the poached lobster tail. My filet was served very cold and purple inside. I sent it back. I don't like sending food back but that steak was raw. They brought me another one which was meh... also too rare as you got to the middle and again no seasoning at all. The poached lobster wasn't poached; it had a toothpick through it pinned to the steak. There was no salt and pepper on the table nor was it offered. I had to ask for it. The water served was warm with no ice. Honestly the food was terrible. We dont mind paying more for GOOD food, this was not good at all. Spend your money at better place. My son could of overcooked his own steak for 20 bucks and I would of cooked a much better filet. read more

Historic inn with a old school charm in the beautiful town of Clinton. Came here for Mother's day and left disappointed. Our server was mostly attentive and polite. The cocktails were decent but things went downhill from there. Although the flavors of the apps and entrees were overall good almost every major component of each dish was overcooked. Chilean sea bass app $19 was tasty but the fish was overcooked. Two orders of the lobster eggs benedict. $34 for each order. Both the eggs and lobster were overcooked. The poached eggs were more hard boiled and the lobster was slightly chewy on both servings. The $20 cheeseburger ordered medium was more medium well to well done. The lobster on top of the mac and cheese was also overdone. We requested the French toast be made plain but it was stuffed with whip cream and strawberries anyway. Then we requested a slice of carrot cake for a birthday at our table and it never came. Mentioned several of these issues to both our server and a manager and received an apology. When paying higher than average prices one would hope that the preparation would also be above average but that was not that case here at the Clinton House. Considering all of the other dining options in the area, we likely will not be returning. read more
