Club Continental is a mansion that was built in the 1920's for the Palmolive soap family on the St John's River. It has since added condos, rental rooms, tennis court, pool, etc. a part that has remained is the entrance and rooms which is where they have their restaurant. Guests and members can have breakfast, lunch or dinner there or rent the facility for weddings, parties, luncheon and such . My brother who plays tennis here has a membership and invited us for lunch. It is a buffet for $18 ea and the menu changes. Today was roast pork-sliced, rice pilaf, sm corn on cob, collard greens, chocolate cake and always.... a large salad bowl, drinks. The ranch dressing was very good with nice fresh,basic salad. Pork was tender, pilaf was tasty, the collards though good, were way too salty. It was a nice space to sit and talk which is what we did after eating. read more

My first time at this club on the St John's River. Came for a wedding. The grounds are very pretty, perfect for an outdoor wedding. Indoors was nice too but the space doesn't really work well with a large wedding. The location of our table didn't give us a view of the bride & groom at all. We missed all of the special dances, toasts, etc bc we couldn't hear any of the announcements or music. Some TV screens hung in the rooms would help bc they could live stream the event for everyone to see. read more

I just got married here 9/15/24. The venue was beautiful, the day went smoothly, and everyone told us how good the food was. Carla was easy to work with and responded to all of our questions quickly. The employees were so kind, even making us feel special the morning after our wedding. They went above and beyond what they were "supposed" to do to help my family and friends set up, clean up, etc! There were only a few cons that added stress to the day: - When we arrived the morning of my wedding, there was a note and key to my hotel room taped to the door. We waited a few minutes, then grabbed the key and went to the room. A few minutes later, there was very loud knocking at my door. We opened it, someone I've never met before barged in (the owner? Still don't know, she never introduced herself), and said "We have some serious problems". She accused me of stealing hotel room keys off her desk and told me I wasn't allowed to be in that room. It was pretty embarrassing considering the makeup and hair artists and all my family had just showed up as well, and wasn't what I expected for my first interaction on my wedding morning. I explained the situation and that I had paid a lot in order to be able to be here early, and she kept telling me I was wrong and "should have told someone"... which I did when I booked the rooms. (Check in is at 11 and there's not a "bridal suite", so I had to book 2 nights in a hotel room in order to start getting ready early and at the venue. Something to think about!) I understand confusion, but that should have been sorted out before confronting a bride on her wedding day. She never apologized or admitted her wrong, although I heard her getting angry on the phone with staff about it later for not communicating. I'm not sure what there was to communicate considering my name was on the bill for both nights, and the staff didn't deserve that either. They, however, did apologize for their boss and brought champagne up to my room. - The rain! Not the venue's fault at all, but the outside is so beautiful, and you have to count on the weather to cooperate - The honeymoon suite was beautiful, but a jacuzzi was advertised, and it didn't work. I was here for a wedding and wow! What an awesome place!! Located away from the hustle and bustle and traffic of Jacksonville, you feel like you are in another world, a world that is calm and soothing with no stress. This place reminds me of a cross between an elegant villa and a comfy bed and breakfast. The exterior brick and stone facade is a perfect match with the beautifully kept grounds with the gardens and fountains. The back of the hotel and venue faces the St. John river and offers fantastic views. This really is a fantastic and perfect place to hold a wedding. The interior of the dining rooms had nice wood paneling and stylish fireplaces that help add to the warmth and old world feel of this place. I cannot say enough good things about The Club Continental. Through the years I've worked at several hotels/resorts and in countless restaurants and this is one of my favorite places to visit now. My family and I had no plans for Thanksgiving and their reservations were full but they made room regardless. Upon arriving the children were fussy so I asked if there was any way we could take our meal to go. They were more than understanding and accommodating, they even made my children pancakes and waffles in case they decided to be picky. The staff was extremely friendly and the property was beautiful. I cannot think of a place I would have rather spent my holiday. The food was absolutely delicious!! Even the next day and I'm not a leftover person!! We were staying at this location for a wedding this past weekend. Overall I enjoyed the location and the wedding was beautifully set up. Pros: The staff was top notch! Wow they were so polite and helpful. I couldn't say enough about how impressed I was. Rooms are beautiful and the view WOW The pools are awesome and again staff all around was amazing. Location is great because your tucked away from the city. Venue amazing along with the food. They really did a great job. I recommend this place for a wedding. Bed and sheets were so very comfy. Definitely a great night sleep. They provide fish and turtle food which was so fun to feed them. Cons: The grounds could use some attention. Just landscaping cut backs and cleaning for some slippery plant mildew / fungus on the grounds. Maybe some better lighting also. Space is smaller so some of the wedding tables have to be behind some partial walls. (No biggie) Breakfast was okay but not great but staff, she was so attentive and sweet. It is an older building so you can very easily hear all the neighbors next to you. The AC cannot go lower that 72 due to the age of the building. For the amount of $$ paid, they only include three channels on tv. This I did not like especially when I wanted to relax and just watch tv. They provide a dvd but who has dvds readily on hand? Biggest disappointment: Nothing was provided for the bride and groom in the honeymoon suite. Nothing. You would never know it was a honeymoon suite. So I went out and bought champagne, roses, extra waters, and chocolate covered strawberries for the bride and groom to feel special. Overall: Beautiful place and I do recommend it for a wedding venue. read more

It does truly pain me to finally have some time to sit and send out this message in regards to my tour with Diana for possibly hosting our wedding here. Not only did I think the entire tour was completely unprofessional. I am still completely heartbroken by my experience coming to tour the venue I had almost 100% been sure on hosting our wedding at. I had a check all ready made out to the club in my checkbook in order to go ahead and pay upfront as we made a trip all the way down from Pennsylvania to your see this venue and this venue alone as I had the highest of expectations and excitement to finally see it in person and to finally book. Diana completely ruined the entire experience for myself, and for my maid of honor. When describing my wedding day vision to Diana ,she on not one, but two occasions, used the word tacky to describe my vision. Instead of reassuring me that my wedding day vision could be whatever I would've liked it to be as it's mine and my fiancés day and our day only. Not hers. I myself am a full-time Wedding planner and to say I was SHOCKED by her demeanor and choice of words through out our tour is an understatement. My maid of honor could also not believe how awful of an experience she provided during our tour. It was truly the worst feeling. I left the tour in tears and I'm to this day completely heartbroken that I will not be having my wedding with you guys the way I had envisioned it for almost 5 months straight. Diana made sure that my vision and dream of being married here was crushed. I wish it could have been different in so many ways and I'm still so crushed and in disbelief of how much wasted time and money we spent buying flights and hotels to have this big of a let down occur. I imagined I would of had a follow up in regards to how our tour went and if we wanted to book but I still have not heard anything and I want it to be known how crushed my fiancé and I are. We had planned to spend ALOT of money here for our event at the club and the check was ready to go upon our arrival. Diana was completely unprofessional and enjoyed talking over me to my mother ON MANY OCCASIONS about the weather that day and other nonsense rather than trying to sell me on the venue and rather than paying attention to my questions and comments. I hope this message can be shared with someone of a high position because her actions during our tour need to be considered as it was the worst experience we have had in our wedding planning process. This is perhaps the hardest review I have ever had to do because everything that came before the entree was delicious was awesome how ever the entrees themselves not so much. We started with the crab cakes and I typically prefer jumbo lumps of crab however the sauce was delicious and the crab to filling ratio is good (more crab than filling). Then the waitress brought out a salad with maybe a creamy balsamic dressing that was really good. Which was followed by a terrific sorbet, but after came our steaks...... in a word "blah". I ordered the filet cooked medium and it was over cooked which made it taste like ground beef. The mashed potatoes that came one the side were very dry and turned into a pasty as I chewed. All in all had 4 star starters followed by 2 star entrees. The service was awesome! read more

I have been here twice, the first for a standard brunch and the second for an Easter brunch buffet. Both times, staff have been incredible. They are extremely inviting and gracious, and are quick to deliver food and refill drinks. The first brunch, I ordered a Bloody Mary that was standard and simple. I chose the eggs benedict which was very tasty. We were with a large table, and our server was quick and helpful with us when we asked many questions. My second time was this recent Easter. There were many large tables, and the place was packed. Still, we received timely service from the staff. It was buffet style that offered many different options: pancakes, waffles, bacon, sausage, an omelet station, meats, salad, mac and cheese, soup, roasted veggies, tater tots, and many delicious desserts. They hosted a cute egg hunt for the kids with someone dressed as the Easter bunny for photos. My favorite part was the gorgeous view of the St. John's River through the windows. We just attended a wedding and I have mixed feelings. It was expensive for what you get. Could be an incredible place if it had a real polished management team First, the location is unbelievable. Right on the St Johns and with the old oak and vintage look it is picture perfect. However once you start looking around it shows the fact that the grounds are not well kept and the building needs repairs. $180 for a room and the view is one of a mud pit outside the balcony. There is no landscape upkeep as the entrance is a dirty koi pond and un groomed vegetation. The entrance needs some paint and a good cleaning. The rooms in the main building are worn out and have dirty old wall unit air conditioners, again for the prices they charge it is simply wrong The staff is congenial but not friendly. The food was mediocre at best. The amenities were almost nonexistent. So, other than the history and incredible view I would give it a big pass. They really need to invest in some updates and world class customer service read more

I had the privilege of spending time with the owner this evening while staying at The Club Continental in Orange Park, FL. Not only were the rooms exquisite, the filet was one of the best I've eaten! Add the to the fact that the grounds are beautifully manicured, the pool area relaxing and beautiful and the staff is over to the top accommodating, I couldn't recommend this hotel more! I have attended two events here and stayed at the B&B twice. If you are going to be there late into the night for en event, and you were part of the group to help set up for the event, staying there is definitely the way to go because of the discount. Otherwise, it will be steep but I don't necessarily think it's a good value. The location along the river with the historic buildings and open courtyard is really scenic. The indoor space is a little tight depending on number of people and room/buffet set up. The staff are friendly. Parking is pretty decent, although the dirt/unpaved lot is a little treacherous at night. read more

The Club Continental is a beautiful property and a wonderful venue for a wedding. The buildings are very old and have a very "old Spanish settler" feel to them. The large trees covered in Spanish moss gives a great atmosphere to the property. The staff seemed courteous enough. They were very helpful to the wedding party. The upper tower room is very nice and is basically an efficiency apartment. My sister rented it to get ready for her wedding. I was not however happy with the fact that we wanted to stay on location with the wedding party but they would only offer us rooms within the main building in advance. Once we got to the location we saw that there was not only to outlaying buildings but there were also cheaper rooms located in the main building. There is a pool on site as well as a beauty salon, tennis court, a koi/turtle pond and fountain, lake view and a patio bar that we used as an after party location once the main building closed. read more

Lovely! I drove up and was shocked that I was staying in such a gorgeous building for my business trip. The staff was friendly and the building was just amazing. My room was a small room (which I asked for) and the bed and the furniture was all antique and lovely. I was in the main house so I don't know about the other buildings - but this one did not have an elevator which loses one star in my book because I'm a small woman traveling alone and it was very hard to get all of my stuff down those stairs at 5am when I had to leave to catch my flight. I even ate dinner in the restaurant and have no complaints. The view is amazing, the staff friendly and prompt and the food just melted in my mouth!! Well worth a look for a romantic getaway if you're in the area - a bit of a waste for a business trip :( read more

A nice intimate venue for a wedding. The club is off the St John River, there are large oak trees which acts as a canopy over the wedding processional and guest. The rooms inside are well decorated and had a good overall atmosphere. The staff coordinated the hor d'oeuvres, main course, cake and champagne toast to perfection. You should know that we came here to see the Northwestern Wildcats break the NCAA's longest bowl losing streak (9 in a row, before this Gator Bowl, we last won a bowl game when Truman was President) by defeating a good but unlucky Mississippi State Bulldogs team. I might have given an alley dumpster five stars I'm so elated. But I think that honestly, this place does deserve the five stars, though it might not be for everybody. The reviews here on Yelp are more consistently high, as compared to the reviews on TripAdvisor or Travelocity, I think because Yelpers on the whole are a little more likely to appreciate the unique, the unusual, as opposed to the general traveling public, but it could also just be random variation. This place was a very pleasant surprise after reading the mixed reviews found elsewhere. First off, the rates weren't very high, given the Gator Bowl/New Year's Eve dates, in fact, the rates were quite off-season, very affordable. This place has rich history and character, the grounds are gorgeous, I'm so glad I brought my Kindle because this is the place to read some F. Scott Fitzgerald. Some of the unfair reviews I read online, warned that the place was "old and needs renovation," but we're not talking about a motel built in the 1990s that needs new carpeting, this is a genteel, century-old mansion, built by members of the the Johnson (Palmolive barons) family before the '20's started roaring (and yet, the soap products in the bathroom are Unilever products I believe). Yes, our bathtub needs a new porcelain glaze, and some painting needs doing on the walls, but we're not talking about a modern, anonymous chain hotel. In fact, this really isn't a hotel, but rather a big, roomy, historic bed and breakfast, without the potpourri, and with better service. We arrived late New Year's Eve, hungry. The Club was busy with a members' New Year's Eve Party (very competent cover band, champagne in the 1950s style glasses, guests in tuxes and party dresses), and although we had no reservations, and were dressed in our Big Ten colors, they served us an elegant three course dinner. Don't be like us, the bar and restaurant isn't always open, call ahead of arrival to find out. The service all around is excellent, the on-site management is so much better than the scripted, artificial and often idiotic impersonal customer service at the major hotels. Complimentary breakfast is more than just continental, they will cook up some eggs for you if you ask, but it starts and ends early (7-9). The view of the river on one side, the courtyard on the other is just phenomenal. This charming location turned out to be the perfect base for local golf, make sure you bring your bags. There are nice tennis courts here, but I don't play so I can't rate them. I'll bet the place is even more fun in-season, they have a quaint outdoor pool, lots of shady trees on the grounds. Every room is different, we stayed in the "Italian," one of the cheaper rooms, but so big and comfortable, I want to try one of the better rooms. It's not a hotel, so stop at the Target on Roosevelt (US17) on your way in from the airport for all those terrorist liquids you won't have coming from the airport, like hair conditioner, body lotion, champagne (Go 'Cats!). It is an old place, you might want to bring a travel powerstrip, the Chief of Staff and I had more stuff to charge up than our room had outlets. Free Wi-fi was pretty quick and dependable. I highly recommend this place for a romantic getaway, visitors like us coming for the Gator Bowl, golf, or even business. It's a perfect venue for a special occasion like a wedding or other special party. It's too charming for just an overnight, plan to stay here a few nights. read more

When I found out that my friend was having his wedding reception at Club Continental, I was very excited and hoping that I would be able to get a room. I am very glad that I did end up staying here as it was truly a one of a kind experience. Nestled on the St. John's River, this place has real charm! As for the room, it was beautiful and very spacious, with a dock out to the river. I went to a few other rooms on the property as I had several friends that were also attending the wedding. I thought it was neat that all of the rooms were unique and different. As for the reception venue - WOW! This place has true old Florida charm. The wedding was outside on the water under a beautiful oak tree. The reception was inside the beautiful ball room. The food was pretty fantastic too! As someone that is currently planning a wedding in another city, I know how hard it is to find a wedding venue with character and charm. This place is truly a diamond in the rough. We booked this venue as a "full club" rental for our wedding and it was absolutely wonderful! Being on the water made for an incredible backdrop for photos, and the venue as a whole is just oozing with old world charm and elegance. The staff is delightful and went above and beyond what any other venues offered in terms of personal service and communication. They were very accommodating on the day of our event and helped tremendously with setup and coordination. All of our guests were impressed with the overall presentation, the ambiance, and with the quality of food and beverages served. The night before the wedding, I stayed in the Continental Suite inside of the main club and it was definitely the best room in the house! The bathroom was HUGE with a deep spa like tub and a roomy multi-head shower. It also had a rooftop balcony overlooking the river and courtyard below. The only disadvantage of choosing this venue, from our experience, was that it also functions as an exclusive dining club and hotel, so this limited some access and availability during the pre-wedding planning. That being said, they still do a pretty good job of maintaining balance as a popular event hub as well as a hotel and as a dining club for their regular members. I would definitely recommend this venue to any couple looking for an exquisite location that offers a fantastic experience for the wedding party and guests alike! read more

I stayed 2 nights. This is a very pretty place. They almost lost me. My room was in the main house and there was a water issue. Breakfast french toast was not good. But I told them about my concerns and they bent over backwards to fix. HUGE positive. Not enough for 5 stars but I found the place welcoming. Dinner was great. Very good martini. The flavors were unexpected but I liked it. Water issue was fixed. FREE wifi. What could they do better: robes, feather pillows, light those gorgeous fireplaces, keep the staff.. they are your biggest sales feature. read more

This Place was a HUGE disappointment! I had never been there before but to the Riverhouse to hear some music on an evening. This time I was there for a Club Meeting and Lunch inside at the Club Continental. The outside needs grounds maintenance...is too over grown with plants, trees, shrubs, and vines. First off...the coffee. Cold and Strong. Impossible to drink! Food-The staff could not keep the pans filled...why not? People had to stand and wait for more meat, more vegetables, more dessert...on and on. Poor Service! Most of the food was NOT hot. The processed turkey slices were all alike and all was smothered in a bad gravy. Most good restaurants offer a nice roasted sliced real turkey and if you wish gravy...it is there to ADD to your meal...not bathed in a gravy that really didn't taste good. Green beans were cold and so long one had to cut them with a knife or bend them around with your fork to eat politely. The bread was dry, cold over done toasted white bread of some kind sitting for a long time...was terrible! There was no dressing of which I was told the lunch was turkey and dressing with mashed potatoes. The potatoes were not real...they clumped and separated and tasted like they had added a lot of water to instant mix. They never brought more cheesecake out until the meeting was about over. The chocolate mousse was just Ok. For the price I would have at least expected real food and not processed as what most of their food tends to be...definitely Not worth the price...and I would never return and I will be sure to let others know this bad experience. When my brother got married, this was the place he and his soon-to-be bride chose to hold the wedding and reception. Located on the St. John River, the Club Continental is a private club that also serves as a bed and breakfast as well as a special events facility. Some quick background on it; built in 1923, this sprawling estate served as the winter home of Caleb Johnson, who apparently was the heir to the Palmolive Soap Empire (never thought of soap as having its own empire). The property seems to have changed hands in the late 1930's to another family, which I believe is where it still stays to a greater or lesser degree. In 1966 the family decided to make it a private club. Since that time it's expanded in various forms (adding tennis courts, buying the properties surrounding it, constructing and renovating buildings) to what it is today. Now I didn't have a chance to check out any of the rooms, or the tennis courts, or the pool. But I did have the chance to check out the grounds and the main club house. Driving onto the place, it had a real Old Spanish feel to it. I'm not exactly sure what that means to be honest. The property is full of those large trees with the hanging branches - Spanish Moss I believe it's called. Ahh, Spanish Moss/Spanish feel. Now I got it. Anyway, the place was gorgeous. It certainly possessed a sense of the romantic. The buildings are beautiful. The entrance of the club is preceded by a neat little enclosed garden featuring a couple of fountains, a number of stone benches, and a little pond with the obligatory koi. Behind the club is a concrete outcropping that looks over a lush lawn, which itself is looking over the river. The little concrete area is where the actual wedding ceremony took place. The inside of the club is very well-kept. The interior is full of pictures that tell the story of the club's history in vivid imagery. The layout is a bit odd though. When you first come in (from the main entrance) you find yourself in a small hall. Turn right and you're in the dance room. Take a couple of steps forward and you find yourself in a small foyer with a bar. On the left is a small serving area, which we actually used as a kids area. This is connected to a larger dining room area that runs parallel to the foyer that served as the buffet. As you move forward from this dining room you find yourself in a small...anteroom, for lack of a better word. This is where the head table was located, which was an odd choice given that only two other tables fit in this area. This little room did look onto the dance room where the DJ and dance floor was located. And next to the both this anteroom and dance room was a larger bar area, which also served as a dining room, and incidentally was where the majority of the guests were seated for dinner. Unfortunately the view to this room was completely obstructed from where we sat at the head table. The staff was phenomenal. They had an on-site event planner that made everything run smoothly. Plus the serving staff (cook-to-order-chef, waiters/waitresses, bartenders) made sure we were all taken care of. After the ceremony the wedding party was dying of thirst and famished. When we made our way to the area where we were taking pictures, there were waitresses waiting for us with trays of water and food. Much appreciated. The only real downside was the food. I was not impressed in the least. At best, the selections were very bland and at worst, some dishes were difficult to stomach. The food just wasn't very good. Of course when my brother asked, I told him it was wonderful (I don't want to ruin his special day). But when he told me how much he had spent, I was shocked. Not worth the price at all. Incidentally the four bucks I spent on a double cheeseburger, order of fries and a sweet tea when I hit the McDonald's drive-thru on the way back to the hotel...heaven. The food is the sole reason why this place does not earn the five-star review. The Club Continental was a wonderful place for a wedding and reception. The venue it's self was very pretty but there isn't much else to it. The free breakfast was a massive disappointment. It was on par with a typical Hampton inn free breakfast. For almost $350 for 2 nights I expected so much more. 3 wall lamps were broken, we had no cold water so brushing our teeth and washing our faces with scalding hot water was not fun, our overhead light didn't work, the towel rack was broken off and gone, there was grime and hair all over, getting ready in the evening was impossible with the lack of lighting from all the lighting that didn't work, and the shower drained was clogged so we had to shower in water pooling around our ankles. We addressed some of the concerns with someone and she said she would send someone up. He got our cold water to go from a drip to a drizzle. It helped but not much. And when we checked out the man said he would pass along the info to the manager and that they had our info. This was almost 2 weeks ago and we never heard back. None of it is worth the money. Also, when we addressed all the concerns at checkout he said we should of called someone to have all these things fixed but it is not really an option when you are in the middle of getting ready. How were we going to know the shower was clogged until we were actually in there and it wasn't until we were getting ready at 6pm that we realized all these lights were broken. Sure the water got slightly fixed but I still had to wash my face and brush my teeth wish scalding hot water at 9pm the first night when we realized it was broken and no one on staff is there to fix it. Regardless if they could of been fixed it would of ruined that time either way. Keep up with your rooms better instead of trying to say it is our fault for not letting you know stuff needed to be fixed. We were only there for 2 days and over the span of two days we kept finding stuff. And I shouldn't have to call someone multiple times during my visit while I'm gettin ready for a wedding to have these things fixed!! read more

Club Continental was - for me - a hidden treasure! Back in the area for a funeral (after living in Jax for 7 years) what a peaceful, lovely place to stay. When you think B&B, you certainly don't expect a private Club that was built by the founder of the Palmolive company! While the rooms are a bit dated, they are very clean and the age of the hotel makes everything charming. Multiple events were being held while we were there, and yet we felt as if our event was the one that mattered the most. The bar area was a great place to meet and visit - and the on-site restaurant meals and service was spot on. The food delicious (I had chicken cordon bleu) - and I've not had service as responsive in far higher-end restaurants. Most "included" breakfasts are pretty much fast food - but not at Club Continental. You get to order from a menu (Mexican 3-egg omelet meal, French Toast meal, and the Italian meal was eggs your way with bacon and potatoes. Coffee, fruit, yogurt, and pastries were readily available. I needed my boarding pass printed, and the office staff kindly did it for me. read more

The Great Gatsby...in OP. Old-school and winning vibe to a place from another time. Secluded and unique, unlike anything you would expect along a river in NE Florida. Take the time machine back to a time when booze was illegal and being yourself was coming into its own. Not a chain, and that's a win. Party Hard! read more

My husband and I recently had our wedding here, and we were absolutely blown away! The venue itself is gorgeous, and has such a wealth of charm. Our guests were absolutely delighted by the aesthetics of the place, and so were we! From the fish and turtles in the coy pond, to the beautiful detail in the guest rooms, to the grand view from the courtyard, this place is stunning. Also, the food was fabulous! We had guests with many different dietary requirements, and were able to accommodate everyone with meals they were more than pleased to eat. On top of all that, the staff was phenomenal. Carla and her team were highly professional, and everyone we encountered was super friendly and helpful. If I could do it all again, I definitely would :) read more
