Talk about an endless supply of options for flavors! When you walk in they have all the flavor options hanging over the register- it's actually super cute! I got a fluffernutter iced latte. It was so good! Not too sweet either! The baristas were some of the nicest people ever! We chatted about the weather and this winter while they whipped up my drink. There's limited seating inside- just one table which was unfortunately occupied. They have a lot of outdoor seating which will be wonderful now that the weather is warming up. Apparently the back part of the building is an antique shop! I didn't get to check that out as I was heading to work! It pains me to write this, but man my pistachio latte tasted like a burnt pan and was so not worth the price. I tried to drink about a third of it and couldn't do it. I just chucked it and went across the street to Dom's for an actually well-made cup of coffee. The pistachio flavoring also tasted expired. There was no point in drinking it. It wasn't even foamy. I can make something better at home with my De'Longhi machine. And the pecan caramel bun just tasted like I was eating butter. The place itself is intriguing I guess, but I was just overwhelmed and didn't enjoy sitting there at all. The final touch was that their point-of-sale is on dialup and from a hundred years ago, so it's slow and they have a credit card minimum of $10. I could not in good conscience recommend The Coffee Trade. read more

HIDDEN GEM ALERT!!!! This was one of the cutest coffee shops I have been to, potentially a perfect coffee shop, and I will be headed there again very soon! The antique store/coffee shop offers the best of both worlds for those whose ideal day is getting a coffee and going antiquing - there are tables in the back, among the antiques, where you can chat, lounge, and read a good book. The antiques are all at good prices, and there are also charms all around the store, for those into charms/trinkets! The staff was so kind and relaxed - even under pressure! The coffee beans lining the wall made the store smell like coffee, and the antiques around you made you feel like you were in your New England grandmother's kitchen, waiting for a perfect cup of coffee. The specials were so inventive and clever, with gorgeous art to showcase their inspirations - I had the peanut butter cappuccino, but there were SO MANY other ones I cannot wait to try! This place is unique and chic. It opened in 1985; there are 80 varieties of coffee beans. Not only do they serve coffee, tea, and coffee beans, they also sell antiques. They roast their coffee beans right onsite since 1989. The employees were friendly and service was great. They had so many flavors to choose from. The latte list was super extensive. I got my honey latte and it was perfection. We sat at one of the tables in the back and enjoyed our drinks and pastries; I got a cranberry scone and my son had a cookie. The flavors were fresh and the prices were super affordable compared to other coffee spots. This is definitely going to be my new go to coffee shop in terms of value and quality! read more

Knick knacks, trinkets and coffee ... it may seem overwhelming but in a good way. If that's not your thing, then just come in for a cup of freshly brewed good quality coffee. They have a wide range of flavored coffee, that they flavor in-house and a micro roaster in the room...you can smell the coffee as soon as you open the door. Occasionally you may run into the roast-master. He was kind enough to give me a grand tour of the whole roasting process. There is also chart on the far wall stating the origins and blends of all the different coffees they offer. You can sample the daily specials upon request. It was quite busy when I was there, people (seemed like regulars) kept coming in and out, most to get their batch of freshly ground coffee for the week. As someone who loves a fresh espresso, I highly recommend you at least buy a bag, there is none other like this in the area. I'm definitely coming back whenever I'm in the vicinity. Came because of the high reviews online. I walked in and they were roasting their own coffee right in front of us, which was pretty cool. The lady at the counter might've been the nicest lady I've ever encountered in my life. Super friendly, super observant and very helpful. Very cool atmosphere and it was nice to walk around and check out some antiques while I have my coffee was being made. For over 18 years now, I brew The Coffee Trade's hazelnut coffee everyday in my home 3,000 miles away, in the land of Starbucks. I've tried others, but nothing is as good. It may be tiny, but it's an overwhelming feast for the senses. Besides the heat from the roaster freshly roasting beans and the smells of coffee drinks, you'll find a small house that's been converted into a country store setting with an overwhelming, colorful collection of knick-knacks and fun gifts for sale. Hanging from the counter window are colorful, artsy laminated menu cards displaying a large number of cutely named coffee drinks. It might be a bit overwhelming (busy looking), but in a fun way. One thing that I noted was that they have the largest collection of Harney & Sons (and the related HT) teas that I've seen anywhere for sale. read more

I've been meaning to check out The Coffee Trade in Avon for some time, I finally stopped by while my pup was getting groomed. The Coffee Trade is a very unique concept, it is an antique shop and a coffee shop all in the same space. It is filled with all kinds of really beautiful artwork, dish ware, books, furniture, purses, and plenty of knickknacks. Right as you walk in you'll see their coffee roasting machine in action. I went to order a small latte, the barista tells me they're out of the small and medium cups, I can only get a large or an extra large. That's a bit annoying, but I got a large. They had a whole bunch of flavor cards hanging above the counter. I went with Nutella. My latte came in a styrofoam cup. How cool would it be to present their coffee in a ceramic cup that looks like what they're selling. I'm sorry to say but my Nutella Latte tasted awful, it tasted burnt and bitter, there's nothing Nutella about it. I sat in one of the rooms admiring all the antique pieces, while I tried to enjoy my latte. read more

I work not too far from here and often smell the beans roasting, but I never had the chance to stop in. Today, I visited for the first time, and I'm so glad I did. The owner was very kind and took the time to explain the different types of available coffee, even providing a sample based on my preferences. There are two rooms in the back where you can relax and enjoy your coffee while browsing antiques for sale. There is also an outdoor seating area. I got an iced dirty chai, which was excellent and perfectly sweet. This will be my new spot for whole beans and a drink. You can't beat the prices, and there's enough variety to keep everyone happy. read more

Over the past several months, I've contemplated area places that were the best at something starting decades ago. The Coffee Trade may qualify, although I first visited Avon's The Coffee Trade within the past 5 years. I recently returned for the second time when a fellow Foodie told me she's a fan. The Coffee Trade roasts beans on site, and it has a coffee roaster that was roasting beans while I was in the store. They have blends. They have flavored coffee. They seemed to have Single Origins, but I'll get to that in a moment. I bought a Bag of Kenyan AA whole beans. I made a home pour over and flash chilled the coffee in a ColdWave Beverage Chiller. The coffee was good. It was bright, but lacked some of the nuances of Kenyan coffees I often drink. In fairness to The Coffee Trade, it was also less expensive than the Kenyan coffee I normally drink. You can also order a coffee beverage at The Coffee Trade. I ordered a black iced coffee, which was made with a French Roast. That's not a normal iced coffee variety for me, but it was well executed and I would order it again. It came in a hot coffee cup rather than in the clear plastic cups most places use. I did not ask if they had things like fancy lattes or cold foam, but The Coffee Trade seems like more of a classic coffee drink place. The Coffee Trade opened in 1989. Coffee Trade was probably in a class by itself early on, and I respect that it's persevered for over 30 years now. However, online and CT coffee businesses are doing things I like that The Coffee Trade is not presently doing. The only information I had about the Kenyan Coffee I purchased was that it was "AA", which essentially refers to a bean size. I would have liked to know what area of Kenya the coffee came from. A single region? A single producer? Whether the coffee was Washed or Natural. The Roast Level. Medium? Dark? What types of beans they used. SL28? SL 34? Something different? Without some of this information, I don't know whether it's a true Single Origin, and how it might compare to coffee I normally buy and drink. I would prefer that The Coffee Trade had this information immediately available in some form -- on its website or on a display in the store. I also felt the inside was a bit cramped. The roaster was in the main customer area, which is somewhat cool, but a bit of a space drain. They also had several displays of mugs, plates, teas, curios, etc. A couple of times, I felt trapped in a small area between other customers and products. I would have enjoyed a more open floor plan. I'm giving The Coffee Trade Four Stars, and I can see why they would have a loyal area customer base. For me to give a higher score, they would need to look at what the newer Coffee Roasters are doing in terms of sourcing and providing specialized information to consumers, and then follow suit. The Coffee Trade would also need to address the floor plan. read more

As you walk in into this antique store/ coffee shop, the coffee grinder is being stirred, fresh and on site. There are antiques and some new gifts to fill (overload?) your senses, a variety of little rooms to visit and enjoy your beverage. Hot lattes are served in glass mugs, as I've had them only in Europe. This is a nice treat. This coffee shop is in the first floor of an old house, across the street (route 44) from the modern Dom's Coffee and Cheese Shop. The Coffee Trade has a welcoming staff! As a bit of a coffee aficionado, I did not find reward in the flavor of their beans. Some gf pastries available. This was my first visit to the Coffee Trade and it won't be the last. The staff were knowledgeable, friendly and passionate about coffee. My first impression was "ahhh!! Nice" because I love the old quaint feel of this part of CT. A coffee heaven right in a quaint little shop filled with antiques, old traditions, and yesss COFFEE!! I took myself on a little tour around while enjoying the lovely aroma of freshly brewed coffee. Right there in the shop, was a real coffee roasting contraption which sophisticatedly did the job. I struck up a chat with the owner who explained how it was all done. Lol I grew up on a coffee plantation in Jamaica but I know absolutely nothing about the coffee process... I just know the end result of the wonderful complex tastes in my mouth lol. As for the selections... they have a shit load of choices!!! Dark roasts, french, blends, flavours... the whole shi bang! So obviously I was gonna need some help to make my selection. They were awesome with helping me make a choice. Told her I liked darks (but not heavily bitter) with more than a slight hint of flavour and waalaahh after talking and tasting a few things we came up with a blend to take home!! Located in quaint, charming Avon, which was given its name in 1830. In 1666, this area was referred to as Nod by settlers. Wholly unique cafe and tea/coffee shopping paradise (incredibly unique mugs and ceramicware), as well as some Victorian-decorated sitting rooms in the back. Looks like a house when you approach, and just keeps coming at you with surprises at every turn. A large PROBAT-brand coffee roaster on the side once you walk in.. they've been there for a few decades, the lady told me when I inquired. Avon is just a bit north of Simsbury, and this place has got to be one of those secrets of the area for local, original coffee imbibing. Treated both of my friends to specialty coffee lattes---pumpkin spice, Snickerdoodle....about $4 cup, and I found (sip of ea.) lacking...not enough coffee flavor, too much artifical stuff added.. I'd come for the ambiance anyday...and for some fun when the bug hits for a cutesy shopping jaunt. read more
