Service was not good, not the wait staff themselves, but how disorganized everything appeared to be. We waited over 20 minutes for our food. Somehow we had the same order number as another table which confused the poor waitress who was nice. They clearly don't have a system for the wait staff to identify which table has whose food (you order at the front, not your table). We thought we saw my order come out but the eggs were scrambled, not fried, so I assumed it wasn't mine and didn't say anything. Eventually my friend confirmed they made my order wrong and didn't know who to bring it to and quickly remade it. Potatoes were overcooked, toast was dry, and eggs were fried with a good runny yolk. Had a bunch of time to kill before my train back to Chicago left, and was happy to find such a cozy coffeeshop so close to the station. It is a large spot with a lot of seating and plenty of accessible outlets. It was a random Wednesday afternoon, and it was busy but not slammed. They have different types of chairs, but I wish there were more cushy ones available. I was still full from lunch so I didn't get food, but got a tea to warm up instead. They were sold out of a lot of their pastries by the time I got there, but they sounded great. Was happy that it was all vegetarian and vegan and that they roast in-house. The staff seemed to be all students, and they were friendly and answered my questions as a first-timer. Seems like a great spot for students, locals, and visitors alike. Coffee is the best! Food is okay. I love this place so much. The staff are always nice and the lattes I get from here are some of the best I've had from anywhere else, and everything is priced incredibly well. They also host many different events like open mics which I tend to enjoy quite a lot. This place functions as a true third space and you really can't beat the environment they create in their dinning area. Only comment would be that the food, while it isn't terrible, doesn't really feel like it hits the mark as a notable brunch spot. Their menu is entirely vegetarian and while that wouldn't necessarily be an issue the food still isn't as good as their coffee. However, since I wouldn't really categorize this place to be a brunch restaurant I'm more willing to overlook that, because as a cafe it's the best in town! read more

As a place to study, The Coffeehouse And Deli is doing all the right things. As a location to eat, this place left me a bit disappointed. Sounds like a typical college spot to me! A colleague and I stopped into the Coffeehouse And Deli to try and get some work done and grab a bite to eat as we were trekking across the county on business. We walked in and I knew this was the place to be to get work done. The work area/dining room is extremely spacious, there are long tables that allow for collaboration and there were a ton of students inside. There's plenty of space to sprawl out, the noise levels aren't ridiculously high and there's free Wi-Fi! The food on the other hand left a lot to be desired. This restaurant focuses on building a vegetarian based breakfast and lunch menu. The first thing I noticed was that the food was super inexpensive. It prompted me to order a veggie burger with fries and a bowl of bean chili. For the price you pay, the portions are massive! I liked that for sure. The veggie burger was the best thing I ordered. Their Guajillo burger comes with avocado and the guajillo oil. It tasted decent, but certainly wasn't anything overly special. The spiced fries were confusing, the fries were overdone and the seasoning was a blend of a little salt and a lot of sugar. They were definitely too sweet, with a bad texture. The bowl of chili lacked flavor and was cold. The good thing about the chili was that it was served in a large and deep bowl. However with it being cold, it wasn't enjoyable at all. With large spaces, mediocre food and cheap prices, you can say that The Coffeehouse And Deli is the perfect university restaurant, and I would have to agree. Is this THE coffeehouse of all coffeehouses? The big 600. Yep, I have now visited over 600 places and what better way to celebrate that than with a visit to one of my favorite places.... a coffeehouse. But sadly, it's not THE coffeehouse of all coffeehouses but it doesn't leave you disappointed. Emily and I dropped in on a dreary Saturday afternoon. What's a dreary day call for? Coffee. We found a somewhat close spot on the street and booked it to the caffeine dispensary. As we walked in, I was surprised that the place was so... spacious. True, if you look at the place from the outside, it does indeed stretch pretty wide if you look at it from across the street. But stepping in really hammers that home. The place feels like it was a giant restaurant in a previous life. We approached the counter and ordered our usual; Emily got her a cold brew and I grabbed myself a standard drip coffee (the Guatemalan). It was under $10 for my large coffee and her medium cold brew. That's a steal, in my book. There were plenty of delicious looking baked goods in the display counters but knowing we were going to Destihl Brewery next, I saved my appetite for that. They weren't too busy so our drinks were ready right after I paid the tab. We grabbed our drinks and made our way to a black leather couch to chill on while my coffee cooled off (they warned me it was steaming and they weren't lying) and Emily's disappeared sip after sip. Going back to the spaciousness of this place, this is one of the few coffeehouses I've been that seating wouldn't be a problem, even if it was during rush hour. This place could easily sit 30 people with room to spare. If I lived in the area and so did my friends, we could use this place for board game days, no problem. As my coffee slowly stopped being the temperature of the sun, I was able to sip on it. The Guatemalan was, for the lack of a better explanation, needing sugar. It was a light roast and it definitely woke me up but it was lacking something that I couldn't quite put my finger on. I looked around but didn't see a cream/sugar station that most coffeehouses have. But the place being relatively large and only looking around from my spot on the couch.... I may have overlooked it. Even without the sugar, it was a serviceable coffee and was good down to the last sip. While I sat and sipped, Emily and I discussed the artwork on the wall. There were some cool pieces and its probably safe to assume they are from local artists/students since Blo-No is a college town. Speaking of that, we noticed about half the people we saw come in were dressed up super nice. Turns out, it was graduation day and people were out celebrating that. Since it got busier the longer we sat there, we got to see the baristas bring out food to various tables. I had already mentioned we had late lunch plans but I'd be lying if I said some of the stuff they brought out didn't look super appetizing. If I ever come back, it'll be with an empty stomach. As we finished off our drinks, we wandered around the place and discovered they sell coffee and tea in an unusual way. While most places have it bagged up and ready to go, at The Coffeehouse, you can use those old-style dispensers to measure out your own bags and get as much or as little as you want. As for the tea, it seems like they had dispensers for those but they switched over to having them in giant glass tubs instead. You can see these below in the slideshow. I haven't seen these kinds of coffee dispensers since I was a kid and it brought back memories of walking down the coffee aisle at Kroger or Wal-mart, basking in the overwhelming scents of coffee beans, even if I didn't like the actual taste of coffee until I was in my 20's. Any who, kind of a ramble of a blog but this was a pretty neat coffeehouse to visit. I had seen it many times before as I've been to D.P. Dough, Insomnia Cookies, Windy City Wieners, La Bamba, and various other places in this popular strip of eateries... but back then, I wasn't such a coffee hound and from across the street, the place didn't seem too inviting and lacked signage. The more things change, the more they remain the same. I visited the coffeehouse recently on a return trip to Normal, not having been there for 2 years. The ambiance is better than in past years. The place has gotten a facelift with the rehab of "uptown Normal." The counter service is basically the same: Place your order, take a number, grab a seat, and they'll bring your order. The food is the same high quality "healthy" food: vegan and vegetarian options, gluten-free items, too. I just had a piece of coffee cake and coffee, which was good overall. My wife told my son, "It's better when you have a hangover from the night before." I couldn't disagree. It's good to see The Coffeehouse hasn't changed too much since my ISU days. read more

I'm completely obsessed with this place. Every time I'm in the area I have to stop in. The food is always excellent, coffee is wonderful, and I've never had a bad pastry at this place. They serve breakfast and lunch all day and the food is vegetarian diner style. Tons of vegan options as well. Also, the food is so so cheap for how tasty it is. My BLT, pancake, and coffee was $13 with a 20% tip (insane). The cafe itself has so much seating also, and the playlist is always lovely. The staff are always friendly and service is quick. My only qualm with this place is that they don't have a location near my hometown because I really do love this place so so much. read more

At breakfast it's always busy. It's especially busy when college is in session. This is the hip place to go for coffee, pancakes, and whatever. For sure breakfast is the best. They have lunch and there's good things on that menu too. Coffee is cheap. It's about $1.50 a cup. This isn't special but it's okay. Food is better. I got the Vegan Pancakes. It's 3 for $6. Best value is to get a few. These are made with cinnamon, soy milk, and vanilla. Fluffy and not hard. She had the Vegan Scramble. This was made with seasoned tofu and vegetables. At lunch there's even more vegan choices. The cases are filled with cookies and treats. Breakfast for vegans can be hard. It has quite a few things here however and also some for lunch. I was in BN for a conference and we told everyone about our experience when we went back to the conference. I always try to shop in the local community and try small shops when I travel vs big box places but this young persons attitude was so bad that we didn't even stay to have lunch after getting our drinks. We decided to go somewhere else with better service which wasn't hard to find since the service there was so bad. She was also overly aggressive with a soft spoken young man who came in, yelling at him to speak up or she wouldn't take his order. read more

The Coffeehouse & Deli is a magical place for breakfast, especially if you're vegan. It absolutely made our stay in Normal Illinois 100% better. We had breakfast here every day of our stay. Each time it was fantastic. They have vegan pancakes!!!!! That's the holy grail of vegan breakfast items and they were perfectly made each time I had them. Vegan butter of course too and pure maple syrup. We also tried their vegan scramble which was savory and delicious. The portion was generous which you rarely experience when ordering a vegan item like this. It's as if you're vegan so don't bother to make a normal size portion. Not here, the scramble was a great meal in itself. I guess they're also known for the coffee here. I would personally rank it way above a Starbucks or Peets. Nice and strong, full flavor with plenty of zip. We also ordered their cupcakes for an afternoon snack. Also outstanding I must say. Everything we ordered was outrageously good. I highly recommend dining here if you're vegan as they have more dining options than anyone else in the Bloomington Normal area. Even if you're not vegan, these pancakes will blow your socks off. This plan still has the best Chai in normal. But the "avocado toast" gets 0 stars. It took 30 minutes to get to me and it was not even toasted. They gave me avocado white bread. It's such a sad miss because they used real avocado which not everyone does. On Tuesdays, I love sprinting up and down Beaufort to get my daily sweat in. How have I never encountered this WONDERFUL coffee shop! After my sprint sesh I was looking to cool off with a nice treat and the line at theos turned me off and turned me around and carried me into the wonderful ambiance that is COffee HOUse! A kind young woman assited me through the varies drink selections (coffee, tea, ect.) and helped me decide on a ice cold bottle of apple juce. Yumo! I sat and chugged that thing, but not before I took in the AMBIANCE! Art, charm, and local "hooligans" galore. Oh, and that old timey pub charm of the bathrooms lol. Reminded me of college. I went back up for a delish pastry and decided on a powerball. That thing was powerful,,, powerfully tasty! I WILL be back! Soon. Great service read more

What a great place located in Normal! This fun place is SUPER vegetarian friendly with an amazing menu and tasty drinks! I ordered a chai and the veggie Mac and Cheese and the vegan chilli with cornbread and my friend ordered the falafel salad! It was so yummy and such a comfortable space for a casual stop to chat and drink or study! They had a variety of table sizes for small intimate dates and two people or large study groups and family's. I lived in B-N from 2003-2005, and fell in love with this place after attending an open mic night (I was a university student, what do you want?). I go back to B-N to see friends once or twice a year and this is ALWAYS my go-to spot. Friends know that if they want to meet me for breakfast or lunch, this is where I'll be. This has been one of my favorite places since the Fall 2006 semester I spent at ISU. Every time I was in town I made it a point to stop in after I was no longer here. Now that I have moved back to town I am so looking forward to the hours I will be spending here editing my novel, admiring the art, and sipping my much adored mexican mochas or hot tea. I tend to always order the spicy tofu sandwich and rice to eat, but everything i have ever tried off of friends plates was delicious as well. It's very possible that I will become a regular here again and be there nearly every day for breakfast or lunch. I've always enjoyed the atmosphere of the place as well. My wife and I stopped for coffee and breakfast. She had an Irish cream latte, I had a house drip Mexican, both were excellent. The house coffee is a great deal at $1 if you bring your own cup. Atmosphere and decor is basic coffee shop, love the working roaster in the back. We had the eggs, home fries, and toast, and a variety of bread choices all baked in house. Disappointed. The place only had 4 other diners in it when I visited on a Friday night at 5:30. There was no one at the counter when I entered and it was at least 3 or so minutes until someone showed up from the back. I ordered the daily special mac & cheese which had grilled onions, mushrooms and zucchini. It came with garlic bread which was chewy and barely warm. This place looks like a little normal coffeehouse (no pun intended), I even KNEW it was vegetarian before going there and I still thought I was in the wrong place when we arrived. Marvelous! I've been here many times before. The seating area is so relaxed and spread out--definitely an excellent place to unwind or to get the creative juices flowing. Had to post a five star review because I received very pleasant and accommodating service. Ordered a honey-vanilla hot chamomile tea ($1.38) (delicious) and asked for honey and milk. The person at the counter got me a tiny pitcher and a bottle of honey, no charge, and offered to carry some of it to the table (pot, cup, honey, milk). Excellent; I left impressed. I would have left impressed, however, had I not upset the tiny milk pitcher and spilled it all over the table. The cashier generously, graciously cleaned up my mess. I'm so happy. read more
