I will always love and want to come here to get a workout sesh in! It really depends what kind of gym you're more comfortable working out in or what kind of exercises your program has. For me, this gym accompanies the workouts I do. It's just something about "warehouse" setting gyms that make me feel at home. I found this gym online. My sister was in town and is on a rigorous workout regimen. (Me not so much). This gym had the specialized equipment that she needed and several ellipticals for me. I saw this gym on groupon and decided to check it out after having horrible experiences elsewhere (Planet Fitness and Gold's Gym).When I arrived at the Colosseum, the owner (huge sweetheart), walked me around and gave me the rundown on personal training, which I signed up for in addition to the monthly groupon pass I purchased. I have belonged to a few gyms and this by far is the best one! Loved it =) This gym has some of the most talented and reputable trainers. My trainer was Adam Foote. Another trainer, Dave Shutler, was always super helpful too. The gym was never really crowded and if it was everyone is super nice and will share machines. The parking lot is a total different story but they make it work. Also, this is a huge bodybuilder gym and most people who look like me walk in and can be completely intimidated. But the staff and people who go here are awesome and truly want everyone to get their best workout in. read more

I stumbled upon The Colosseum by accident after my gym of two years suddenly closed down and I was forced to look elsewhere for my weight lifting needs. I can't say enough how happy I am to have found this place. This is the perfect gym for the power lifter/Olympic lifter. It has everything you ever need- equipment from basic free weights and plate loading machines to heavy stones and monster truck tires and weighted sleds.... Literally everything!!! There's a separate component of the gym that has a specific area for Olympic lifts, and a good amount of specific Olympic or powerlifting bars. The environment itself is what I like the most about the gym. The inside looks like a warehouse, and has a nitty-gritty atmosphere that motivates you workout more intensely. I had a chance to meet the owner, and he seems like a very friendly person. I would recommend this gym to anyone interested in stepping up their gym environment. There's a special rate for military/students/law enforcement. At least try it out! read more

After 5 months here I feel comfortable enough to leave an honest review. Pros: -Serious training environment. Plenty of power racks, tractor tires, powerlifting equipment, dumbells. You name it, it's here. When you see tacky material that looks like honey next to a pile of powerlifting atlas balls, you know the place is legit. -Never too crowded. I can come here to workout at 5pm and still use equipment with zero wait time. This is unheard of in most commercial gyms. -You can grunt and scream. In fact, one of the employees said "I'd by worried if you're lifting heavy and don't grunt." This theory has been tested by me, excessively. Trust me, nobody cares if you make noise. -Free full size towels in the bathroom. -The owner is awesome! You don't meet many people that are as genuinely happy as he is. -Everyone is really nice. In 5 months working out here I've had only 1 person be even kind of rude, and I'm pretty sure it was just his personality. I can be a bit crass sometimes too, so it's totally understandable. I'm here 5-days a week and everybody is always smiling and willing to work together. Gym etiquette is at its best here. Cons: -The clientele can be very intimidating. There are some women here that are bigger than most men. Plenty of bodybuilders and powerlifters. Personally I feel being around strong, successful lifters is motivating. But for many new gym goers it can take some getting used to. -"The Arena" is where all the power racks and Olympic platforms are. It's fantastic back there. But it's so dirty. That room maybe gets swept every 4 weeks or so. Seriously, clean that place up once in a while. Overall this gym gets a solid 5-stars. If you're serious about getting stronger, it's worth the paid membership. read more

I love this gym! Some pros that I appreciate: *Privacy- I hate when gym bathrooms are just big empty locker rooms where you have to bare it all in front of the other patrons. Not here. Changing rooms and showers have spacious private stalls. The changing rooms have full doors, mirrors, a seat, hooks for your clothes etc. Showers have a private curtained-in changing area in front of the shower so you don't have to change in the actual shower stall to maintain privacy. The showers also have nice shampoo in them. *Woman friendly- Sometimes the weight lifting areas feel a lot like "dude" zones in gyms, which is unfortunate since weight lifting has so many health benefits for all genders. (Side note: No, you will not "bulk up" like a dude-- unless you are taking steroids-- by lifting weights. You will tone up, increase your metabolism, increase your bone density and decrease your risk for osteoporosis.) At the Collosseum, there are a lot more women (of all shapes, sizes and strengths) who use the weights. So its less intimidating to join them. I think this is in part because the Collosseum has a lot of clients who work with trainers, and so more people know how to get a good strength workout whether they are with their trainer or on their own. Definitely worth hiring a trainer a couple of times to teach you strength training basics since this is such an important part of fitness that so many women miss out on. *Spacious- The gym is pretty much a big open floor plan. High ceilings keep you from feeling boxed in. They don't try to pack in machines like sardines in a can the way some gyms do, so you have a comfortable distance between you and anyone else working out. *Not overcrowded- I've never had to wait in a line to use a treadmill or elliptical, something that was common practice at my old gym. What a waste of time! Here I can get my workout in, and get out. *Little details done right- clean, plenty of towels, big magazine collection if you like to read while doing cardio, nice soaps, shampoos and even mouthwash in the bathroom. *Smart, friendly, professional staff who are truly knowledgeable about health and fitness. I've been to a lot of gyms in the area and this is by far the best gym I've been to. It has the best blend of machines, free weights, dead lift stations and squat racks. I've been looking to get a little more serious with my workout and incorporate more compound power exercises. This is the perfect gym to take your workouts to the next level if that's something you're interested in. Don't get me wrong, this is a perfectly fine gym for the less serious gym goer as well. They have a good bit of cardio equipment as well as various machines but the highlight for me is the "Arena". The Arena is another area of the gym that houses the power lifting. There are plenty of squat racks, dead lift stations, more dumb bells, benches and much more. This is what makes the difference for me, the Colosseum gives you the chance to really mold your body. They have sleds, plyo boxes etc...I love it all. The gym is clean and pretty well organized. You'll see some chalk here and there but the members keep things where they are supposed to be. Some of the equipment is newer but it all helps you move weight. The arena is a little more grungy, a little more chalk but still things are generally where they are supposed to be. The customer service is good and I've never had a bad experience over the past month of membership. The membership dues are month to month. I've yet to find the busy hour and am able to move through my workouts with no issue. Overall this was a great find. It's not the sparkly, brand new gym but you don't have to worry about intimidating someone with a water bottle, a gym bag or a belt. If you're looking for a "no judgement zone" this isn't you're gym (they always judge btw). Friendly staff and everyone in the gym is serious and motivated. No one just standing around on their phone, no curling in the squat rack, chalk is everywhere, and slam your weights around like a boss! Gym is good for serious lifting but is dirty and they let dogs into the gym. Owner is also kinda rude in general. My friends still workout there but most just walk in without a membership (they don't check most of the time). I think people should try it out but don't have high expectations if you aren't into strongman sports or specifically bodybuilding (lots of competitors that workout there). Also the bathrooms in the back are pretty much unusable, dirty clogged and the lights don't work. read more

Really great "nuts and bolts" facility. I had planned on being a part of their fitness community for a few months, but I had to relocate out of the state of MD so I was only there for a week. I really like coming to this gym. There's tons of equipment to go around and lots of different areas to specialize in (boxing, weights, strongman, CrossFit). The only thing they're missing is tanning beds. Other than that it's pretty damn great. read more

The Colosseum is awesome. Everyone who trains here is pretty hardcore. All the personal trainers are very qualified and very accomplished in their respective completions/fields (Caesar is especially great, get if you want to get jacked!!!). Also, because everyone is so serious here and are focused on their personal goals, as a female this is the only gym in my experience where I haven't felt harassed or bothered--so it's for sure a great environment for anyone of any gender or age to train at. Do not attend Colosseum Gym if you are looking for tanning booths, pools, saunas, or a smoothie stand. This gym is focused on the training aspect of fitness with cardio machines, lifting machines, powerlifting equipment, Olympic lifting equipment, and Strongman equipment. If any of those training styles are your passion or in your fitness program, then this location is a gem! Coaches are available and the owner of the gym is almost always present to meet potential members, frequent members, and answer questions. Colosseum Gym also hosts multiple strength based competitions if you are looking to challenge yourself. Everyone handles fitness differently but Colosseum Gym provides a supportive community for lifters and fitness friends which encourages me to be a frequent customer! read more

I have been a member here for about two years now. I have been lifting for about 15 years, and powerlifting for about 5 years so I am not a newbie. This is a great gym but it has a few quirks. It really is the best gym in the area though if you are into powerlifting and other strength sports. The owner Tim is great. He is always friendly and greets you. A couple of the people that work here are also friendly. But then the trainers, that is where this place gets weird. Some of the trainers are very rude and pushy. These trainers will pile up their stuff on equipment that they aren't using, in effect making it unusable by anyone else. I have never been to any other gym where this is acceptable behavior. And don't even attempt to move any of their stuff to use equipment that they are blocking. If you attempt to use any equipment that a trainer wants to use next, even if they are currently clear on the other side of the gym using something else, they will run over and tell you that you can't use it. And the trainers stand around and make fun of people in the gym that aren't their own clients. So totally unprofessional. This is one particular group of trainers that are responsible for all of this behavior. I won't say their company name here but it isn't hard to figure out who they are. I will add that there are a couple of other trainers at the gym that aren't associated with this group that are nice and professional. But this one group really spoils the whole place. I have never encountered behavior like this at any other gym. Locker rooms are small and can get really crowded. Don't expect to wait until the last minute to take your shower before leaving for work because there are only two showers (for men). Lockers room and bathrooms are always clean and there are towels provided. Overall, the best gym inn the area and they have the best equipment. The owner is awesome and friendly. They do their best to keep the place clean and the equipment in good order. Really the best gym in the area. Just be prepared to deal with unprofessional behavior from many of the trainers. read more

This is a gym for serious lifters. It's easily the best gym in Maryland. If you're looking for the latest fad equipment, towel service, or a day spa, you are in the wrong gym. If you are looking to chat more than train, you're in the wrong place (in fact, just go to a bar already). But if you're looking to lift heavy in a friendly environment, you've found heaven. best gym in Howard County period! i do strictly Olympic lifting (clean and jerk/snatch) and this is the only gym in the area that accommodates that. gym culture is very good. people rerack their weights (with exception with one of trainers who all members despise...) no one is on sitting on a machine with the cellphones, people are friendly and competitive. ample parking and not too congested even during peak hours. there seems to be people who sneak in with no membership and take advantage of the relax atmosphere...all i can say to that is, shame on you! this is an honest small business! they offer GroupOn discounts and daily/weekly memberships. Nobody is there look at themselves in the mirror or showoff their newest workout gear. you come, you lift, you bleed, you leave. only gym you're gonna find with chains. if you really like lifting at Merritt or Golds then you should stay there, this place is not for you. this is a real blood and guts gym that is for people serious about lifting and not about coming to the gym to use it as their match.com. so grab a handful of chalk and get in the cage and bend the bars. read more

Simple gym, no big class rooms, or over the top stuff. Just plan and simple, free weights, machines, cardio eq. Plus the best part is, even between 5-6pm, they are not that busy! Good simple gym. I tried this place out using a Groupon. I didn't sign up but the only reason was because I am not a big time person into working out and didn't feel that the monthly cost was worth it for me. All I would do is use some of the cardio equipment and some weight machines. I'm not much of a trainer. It just has cardio machines, weight machines and free weights, kettle bells available. I noticed a lot of people who were really into training there a lot of times and I think that's exactly what the gym is aiming at. The facilities were nice and the staff was friendly. read more

Its an old-school gym for serious trainers. I realized at Colosseum the most important aspect of a gym is who trains there, and Colosseum Gym has good folks in there, the kind that make you want to be there, work harder and be part of it. Its not the modern, pristine fitness center where yuppies from Gattaca walk around with their earbuds in, texting on their cellphones in isolation. Colosseum is welcoming, and has energy of serious trainers you can interact with and benefit from. That and they're just plain good folks. I absolutely love this gym; where do I even begin. What this gym has: - Tons of equipment that you will not find outside of a highly specialized gym (e.g. olympic bumper plates, strongman equipment, rowing machine, climbing rope) - Many cardio machines - Trainers and staff that cater to just about all interests - Friendliest staff (they hold customer appreciation bbqs and dinners) and Tim (the owner) is one of the nicest guys I have ever met. - Excellent monthly rates and all memberships are MONTH TO MONTH. Thats right, no 2 year contracts or ridiculous cancelation fees. The thing I love most about this place is how there are people who have very diverse goals when it comes to what they want out of a membership. This is NOT just a place that justs caters to one group (e.g. bodybuilders or powerlifters). While there are plenty of people here that are interested in what an average-joe might consider to be hardcore fitness stuff (like competitive bodybuilding, powerlifting, or strongman), these same people have always been very cool talking to other people in the gym about what they are doing. There is NO upper class of members; we are all members. There is no where else that I have been that houses state record holder powerlifters, competitive bodybuilders, triathaletes, and average joes all under one roof.
