Update: It's been 3 months since I moved out and still have not received my security deposit back. I have to email them multiple times a week and they keep deflecting making up excuses for why I haven't received it yet. They're so incompetent here, you almost have to laugh. -- Living here was the worst experience I've had at an apartment complex in 15 years. The people who run The James are unorganized and dishonest. The building is old - which would be charming, but it's so poorly managed and maintained that it's mostly just sad. They had people sign long leases without telling anyone there would be construction next door and everyone would lose their parking. They continue to charge astronomical rates for parking, despite the parking being miles away in an unsafe area. They also are so incompetent that they openly cc you on emails to other residents - and keep doing it after you ask them to remove you from a very private conversation they're having w another resident. One of many privacy mishaps while I was there. The people who work have trouble with even the smallest things. A simple ask like "can I have the key to my unit's mailbox?" will take weeks and 20x emails before you get a coherent response. Because the building is poorly maintained, it means there is mold / mildew everywhere - open the window in your bathroom at your own risk, as it leads to an interior chute filled with mold. You'll hear all your neighbors - both in their apartments and anytime they walk the hallways. The bathrooms are tiny with poor ventilation. The AC / heat unit in your room will also have mold on all the filters. It's impossible to get mail, packages, or deliveries here. None of the windows in your room will open because nothing is maintained. They pretend to have amenities and functioning wifi, but I spent every day on the phone with their ISP trying to get it working. This place is a disaster and severely overpriced. Live there at your own risk.

The building also has a really nice gym, which has been a huge plus for me. It's convenient, clean, and well-maintained. The neighbors are friendly, and the overall community feels welcoming. One of the biggest reasons I've enjoyed living here so much is because of Danny and Stephanie. They're always helpful, responsive, and truly care about the people who live here. They don't make you feel like just another tenant -- they treat you like family. Anytime something needs attention or an issue comes up, they handle it very quickly and efficiently. It's reassuring knowing management actually cares and takes action right away. I'm really grateful to call this place home and would definitely recommend it to anyone looking to live in the area.

If you have two spaces and don't have two cars, you can always get them into your other space to avoid street parking. With meters and lots all over the area, what else would expect from the city life? It's safe here and frequently monitored by SouthPark officers as well. What I'll sorely miss about this place were the relationships that I built. I knew the entire staff and would wave, talk, and truly lean in with them all. Whether it was before/after work, going out for the night, or chatting, they were more than friendly. They became my community of friends. They felt like family. If you want a place that does not feel pretentious, has a community of others that say "hi" to you, and is close to the core of DTLA, come live here. It will be hard to find a staff that manages the building and secures it, then you will find it at ELLEVEN.
