The owner (and book author), Mrs. Colleen Williams, was warm and welcoming to her B&B. The rooms were eloquently adorned to the times of the civil war. She bought and rebuilt the place after a fire completely destroyed the building. Breakfast was hearty and delicious, but the best thing was her presence and the conversation with her and her wealth of information with a keen sense of humor woven in her stories. She is petite in stature but a giant in encyclopedic facts and story telling. The only flaw was that we arrived close to 11:00 pm, and it was very dark and the house number had been painted over with white paint and it was indistinguishable from the rest of the door frame so we had to ask the front desk of a neighboring hotel that were able to show me a road view of the building that we recognized after driving by it. Okay, anyone that gave this place above 3 stars clearly has not stayed at a nice or even decent Bed and Breakfast. The whole time my fiancé and I were at The Confederate House we felt uncomfortable... 1. There is no cable. She makes it seem like there is but she doesn't pay for 90% of channels so you're stuck watching infomercials & CSPAN before bed. 2. I kept finding hairs in the shower and on the bed sheets that did not belong to us. 3. The house itself is pretty rundown. She tries to blame it on the hurricane. Some of the damage is clearly from that but many other elements of the house are just diy repairs that look patchy. 4. The food was absolutely disgusting. HUGE chunks of fat left on the ham, canned pineapple, sunny D versus orange juice, etc. 5. Colleen (the innkeeper) talks about her political beliefs. I hate to give her a bad review but it just wasn't an experience I would suggest others visiting Savannah pay $100 a night for. We stayed at the Best Western Central Inn for 2 nights prior to coming to The Confederate and let's just say I would have rather stayed at The Best Western and it was only $60/night!! read more

First time visiting Savannah and my husband booked this lovely B&B. The house was beautiful on the inside. The rooms were very spacious and comfortable. Great price. Perfect location right across from beautiful Forsyth Park and just right next door to one of the trolly stops (very convenient). One of the days we just decided to walk instead of taking the trolly and it was a beautiful walk. Now, back to the B&B... The breakfast was fabulous I couldn't believe how delicious it was. I had never had biscuits and gravy and I was very pleasantly surprised. Ms. Williams wasn't only a great host but a great cook as well! My favorite part (and my husbands) of our stay at this B&B were our conversations with Ms. Williams. She is a feisty, wonderful, smart woman.. She is a lovely and very welcoming host. For anyone who wants something more than a standard hotel experience, you've found the place! Disregard those "other" reviews! Yes, the building is old (1884 old)...you take what comes with that kind of history. The tv selections are limited (shouldn't you be spending more time enjoying Savannah anyway). But Ms. Colleen is a true Southern lady (even if she wasn't born in the South)! She got here as fast as she could. Raised by a Southern momma and approved by the FBI to host international dignitaries, she has so many interesting stories to tell! She is an icon in this home, which was her family's home before she opened it to the public. I could sit and hear her stories for days! From the moment she met me at the door, I knew this was a true experience. She gave me the basics on where my room was, how to lock the doors upon my departure, and then told me a full Southern breakfast would be served at 9...and if we wouldn't be joining her to just turn our plates over on the large dining room table. When I got upstairs, I was greeted by a table full of fresh home baked oatmeal cookies and a warm chocolate cake, as well as decaf and regular coffee and even wine glasses and a corkscrew, in case we had brought something to enjoy later. The next morning, we went for a walk around Forsyth Park and then met two other couples downstairs for breakfast, where we shared stories of our hometowns (all of us happened to be from Florida!) and all the reasons we came to Savannah. Ms. Colleen asked how we would like our breakfast (biscuits, gravy, grits, watermelon, orange juice, and coffee), served us from a rolling cart, and personally placed our meals in front of us. Then she sat down with us to share more stories. Before I departed, she told me that my daughter (who had just moved into a house two blocks from the Confederate House) was welcome anytime in her home if she needed anything at all. This kind of service, history, hospitality, and experience you will not get from the commercial hotels down the street! Take the risk and stay here, across from the beautiful Forsyth Park. The Confederate House - Bed & Breakfast Near Me - Savannah, Georgia

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at The Confederate House Inn Bed & Breakfast. We went to Savannah in mid-September, so the weather was perfect. Owner/operator Colleen Williams was genuinely warm, charming and quirky in the best possible way. We loved her! Colleen's breakfasts were delicious, and the always available pastries and coffee were a welcome treat too, especially after a long day of shopping and sightseeing in beautiful Savannah. The inn is located on Drayton Street overlooking Savannah's largest and, arguably, most beautiful park - Forsythe Square. So it's near center city shopping and the historic district while being far enough away from their hustle & bustle, albeit Drayton is a little busy on weekday mornings. The front porch columns are immense; the interior pictures & other appointments are reflections of the Civil War history here; and the chunky 8' tall solid mahogany interior doors, with their intricately carved fleur de lis motif, were absolutely stunning. All wonderful reminders that we were bunking in a genuine 19th century historic Southern mansion. Our room, with its high ceilings and tall windows, was huge and tastefully appointed. The king bed was very comfy; the large private bathroom had 2 sinks, plus both a shower stall and bathtub. You won't see this in any hotel or most B&Bs! The best part was the price. We've stayed in Savannah several times at varying B&Bs but The Confederate House was, hands down, the most economical and biggest bang for our buck. Just a fair warning: if you have any reason for not wanting to climb stairs then I'd opt to stay somewhere else, as the CH has a flight of outside steps leading to it's immense porch, and a flight of interior stairs leading to the 2nd floor bedrooms. There is no elevator and no one to assist with your baggage (take 1 star off). That being said, the Confederate House is a terrific bargain. I'd stay there again in a heartbeat! The house is large and spacious. It is a welcoming environment. The price was; $100.00 a night plus tax. The rooms, as with the rest of the house, were occupied by antique furniture. The beds were comfortable. The house is about 1-1.5 miles from downtown Savannah, and it is right across the street from the beautiful Forsyth park. The owner/operator, Ms. Coleen is a very friendly woman who is blessed with perspective on life and like to socialize. She made a good breakfast each morning we were there. The southern style biscuits and gravy were really good! I'd recommend this place if you aren't looking for ritzy or glam instead cozy and relaxing. read more

We knew immediately that we wanted to stay in a bed and breakfast one of those nights (who wants to stay in a chain hotel while visiting one of the most charming cities in America?). After much research, I stumbled upon the Confederate House. The pictures were beautiful and the good reviews far outweighed the bad. We decided to give it a try - and we are so glad we did! As we pulled up, I was amazed at the grandeur of the mansion - it was older, but had not lost any of its beauty or charm. As we approached the door, we were met by Ms. Colleen Williams - the owner. She was very friendly and informative - she sat us down to review the rules and would often go off on tangents about her life in Savannah. Truly a fascinating woman. As we brought our luggage into our room, we once again were amazed. The bedroom & private bathroom were HUGE. The room was clean, the furnishings charming, and the bed comfortable. We were thrilled. After spending the rest of the day walking and exploring Savannah, we came back exhausted and fell right into bed. The next morning we went down to the breakfast table to find 6 plates of food. Two couples were already seated at the table. My boyfriend and I joined the other couples for an enjoyable breakfast of French toast, sausage, and watermelon (I didn't eat the sausage - vegetarian - but the French toast was delicious!). Ms. Williams joined us at the end of breakfast for a bit of conversation before everyone departed. Overall, the Confederate House far exceeded my expectations. Originally I had worried that this B&B wouldn't be a good match for a young couple, but I was completely wrong. Ms. Williams opened her beautiful home to us and showed us true Southern hospitality. I will be telling all of my friends and family to stay here if they are ever in Savannah. To address other concerns I have seen on YELP!, Bed and Breakfast, and Trip Advisor: Stairs: Yes, there are plenty of stairs. This shouldn't be a problem unless you have someone with a disability. When calling to make a reservation, ask Ms. Williams if there are any disability accomadations. Old/dirty/smelly: This is a beautiful, but old Georgian structure. It is not going to look nor smell like a modern hotel. And anyone coming here expecting it to look/smell like a 5 star hotel needs to have their head examined. You're staying in a beautiful, historical building. When I stayed there, it was neither dirty nor smelly. It was exactly what I expected of an older structure. Breakfast: Breakfast is served at 9am. My boyfriend and I were several minutes late but quickly excused ourselves and sat down to join the others at the table. Breakfast is not buffet-style; you cannot come whenever you drag yourself out of bed. It is much like a family breakfast - your plate is already set, you join everyone on time, and you enjoy a leisurely breakfast with small talk. read more

My wife and I stayed here for 2 nights over the thanksgiving weekend and were quite pleased with our stay. Some of our afternoon plans were cancelled unexpectedly so we showed up a few hours before 3 on our first day; understandably our room was not ready, but the innkeeper was nice enough to give us our keys and parking permit so we could leave our car at the Inn and avoid the meters in town while she finished our room. She asked if we had any food allergies, but even went so far as to ask if there were any breakfast foods we just didn't care for as well. There are only a few small negatives that keep me from giving 5 stars: 1) the TVs only get about 10 channels. My wife and I like relaxing in bed with some tv before going to sleep and had very limited options on what we could watch. 2) the water to the bath tub in our room would not get hot, even after letting it run for several minutes. We walked quite a bit and wanted to soak our feet some before heading out again. Only a minor inconvenience, as the water in the shower did not have the same issue. If you don't mind walking an extra couple of blocks to the get to downtown, you'll easily save $100 per night by staying at the Confederate house instead of the B&Bs in the center of town. read more

We came here for a weekend and had a nice stay. The woman who owns the bed and breakfast was lovely and a true southern women who loves to tell stories. The place is beautiful and keeps the historic feel of the town. As with all places with high ceilings comes lots of stairs so be prepared. Wonderful location and in walking distance to everything. There are parking spots in back we parked our car and had no need to move it for the weekend. In the evening she'll place out desserts and the cakes are incredible and a must try! Our one disappointment was breakfast, while she does ask for dietary restrictions, is it only offered once per day at 9 am so take it or leave and it honestly I would leave it (the grits and biscuit are very hard to stomach and I pretty much just played with my food). read more

The owner, Colleen Williams, stole my money. I booked a reservation with the Confederate House in November of 2014 for a stay in February 2015. I called in December 2014 and cancelled the reservation. In February, the owner of the bed and breakfast, Colleen Williams, charged my credit card. She said that since I did not cancel through email I still owed for the charge. Had she told me when I called on the phone that I should have emailed her, then I would have gladly emailed her. After speaking with her on the phone for an hour, she still refused to refund the money. She told me to call several days later. She is now not returning my calls. I feel that she is manipulating this situation in order to take my money. read more

The Confederate House exceeded our expectations. Colleen is very pleasant greeting us at door and sitting us down in huge room we entered from front door. Explained all the rules of the house and explained breakfast which all was perfectly fine with us. The room was very large and the shower was bigger than most bathrooms. The bed was extremely comfortable and the nights were quiet in the house. The breakfast was a delicious home cooked southern meal. The house is a southern looking home that looked as if it was built by a wealthy family. It was in a convenient and safe location and with a very affordable price. This hotel has an 11pm deadline for checking in for some reason. We got there between 11 & 12, they didn't allow us to check in and they didn't give us a refund. There was no mention of this policy when I made the reservation. It was mentioned somewhere in the body of the confirmation e-mail. If you are the type that reads all the fine print, you'll catch it. This was our first trip to Savannah. We wanted a true Southern experience, we choose the Confederate House to start off our trip. It was the best decision we made. The house was amazing. Yes, it was old and a bit worn but those things also come with character, history, and stories. You truly got the feeling that it was a grand place back in the day. Colleen was a great host and a fabulous cook. The Confederate house is also on the bus line which takes you directly into the heart of Savannah. Be advised that your reservation at this inn can be cancelled at any time by the innkeeper. I made my reservation two months in advance. I just received a generic email confirming cancellation of my reservation. When I called thinking this was a mistake, the innkeeper, Colleen Williams, was neither sympathetic nor apologetic. She said because the economy was bad she had just signed a contract with a company that required her to bump reservations if they needed a room. When I said I would never do business with her again, her reply was "Promise?" Bless her heart, she thinks her business is down because of the economy, not because she has the shady business practices of a Yankee carpet bagger. In truth, the economy has rebounded and travel season is booming. And now my dilemma of having to find another place to stay on short notice... A true Southerner in the hospitality industry knows that if you treat your customers well you will be rewarded with their loyalty. You, madam, are no southerner. read more

If I could give this place negative stars I would. Worst experience ever!!! The website clearly states that check in is at 2:00pm and we arrived at 2:05. No one answered the door so we obeyed the friendly note on the door that instructed us to go around to the side door. No one answered. After an hour of waiting on the front step and repeatedly ringing the doorbell and side door, numerous phone calls, emails and voicemails we left for another hotel. After 9:00pm Colleen finally called us back and informed us that we should have been there at 3 (which we were but she claims she did not see human bodies sitting on her front step and 4 bags on luggage). After a very rude conversation and her stating my boyfriend is "full of hate" and a "bad person" along with numerous other very negative comments after he explained we had to go to another hotel due to the fact we had no where else to go, she advised us that we would not receive a refund and a collector would be in contact with us. I made a reservation through their own website, and received a confirmation email for my stay. After managing to escape the flooding in Charleston I made it for my schedule check in time. I had emailed a few days before my trip to find out about parking no response, I should have taken it as a sign. Instead I arrived, the exterior is a little crumbling and unkempt, but it's a neat looking home. A note on the door said to call for check in, so I called, Coleen answered the phone and said she would come let me in. She never came. I called back 15 minutes later and she kept me on the phone while she struggled to look up whether I had a reservation or not. 10 minutes later, me still standing on her porch, she inside the house, she decided I didn't and it was my own fault. She never came to the door, didn't offer any apologies, just recommended I go to the expensive hotel next door. I don't recommend doing business with her, you may be left stranded, it's not worth the savings to risk it. read more

Colleen, the innkeeper is the most rude, unprofessional and dishonest people I have ever had the displeasure of speaking with. We booked our accommodations well in advance of our trip, 2.5 months in advance to be exact. The first sign of a poorly run business was Colleen not using a computer to send the confirmation. Against my better judgement I let that slide and thought there was no way Colleen would screw us - especially after specifically confirming the price with her. 1 month before our trip (flights have been booked, coordinating with 4 different people flying from all over the country), I received a call from Colleen telling me she did not realize the dates I had booked were during a marathon that Savannah hosts and so she would be raising the room rate $75. When I questioned this and didn't understand why our originally quoted and booked price wouldn't be honored, Colleen grew agitated, raised her voice and told me we were no longer welcome to stay at her inn. She has now left 4 people with no hotel accommodations, on one of the busiest weekends in Savannah (not a single other inn or hotel has availability). In desperation, my husband got on the phone trying to calm Colleen down and reason with her to let us stay to which Colleen replied "you people from New York.... You're not welcome to stay here." Besides being wildly inappropriate, is this some vendetta she has against the "north?" "Crazy New Yorkers?" (Her Inn is called The Confederate House after all...) I'm not sure but what I AM sure of Is the experience with Colleen was nothing short of insane. When one of our friends called to try and reason with Colleen, she grew agitated again, yelled and told the friend she raised the price because the price of her electricity went up. No one has any clue at this point what the actual reason is. I would never even entertain the idea of giving This woman business of any kind. She is rude and unprofessional in every sense of the word. That is certainly not the "southern hospitality" we had in mind.... Shame on you Colleen. read more

From the first steep step of many up the mildewed front, neglect hits you - the rotting bannister, cracked and crumbling plaster and dirt covered door. The faded sign on the peeling front door instructing you to call for entry should send you running. Then the harridan owner, Colleen, opens the door quite a bit later and "checks" you in with non stop talking. I tried to get away numerous times but she just keeps going, spewing instructions you will not be able to remember. She sends you up another set of steep steps to the real nightmare. Initially the room looks nice with antique like furniture. Upon closer inspection, the shades can't be pulled up or they will fall on you, the furniture is marked and nicked, the walls filthy and the bedding tired and covering sheets with black "dirt" specks despite smelling of bleach. Then the bathroom. Dirty coffee mugs for glasses, a faucet falling into the sink literally, no hot water in the shower and a hair glob hanging off the soap bottle. The upstairs "lounge" had store bought cake, stale cookies and cold, weak coffee and filthy coffee cups with dirt in the bottom that was anything but inviting. When I brought the bags upstairs for me and my friend with a broken foot Colleen just looked at me. At breakfast, which was on a par with Denny's but with a candle, Colleen butted into the conversation and basically dominated the table. She is a sad, bitter, unhappy woman bringing forth the ways to navigate the legal system, which she knows VERY well, at the breakfast table. She, and Confederate House, are the antithesis of charming Southern hospitality. Run, don't walk, away from this Nightmare on Drayton Street. read more

I loved staying at the Confederate house! I stayed with my boyfriend, and the bed was a king and our room was spacious and comfy. The house is beautiful and restored to reflect original character. Coleen made breakfast from scratch, and had freshly baked cookies that my boyfriend said were perfect lol. The location was great, we walked everywhere, and all recommendations for food and drinks were exactly what we wanted. We enjoyed talking with Coleen very much, and having the park across the street was good for jogging in the morning. Our only near fail was that our reservation was not recognized in their books even though we paid in advance after booking online. We called prior to arriving and got in with no trouble, but even if we had gotten there and nobody was there, we would have left our luggage in the car and enjoyed the park until someone let us in.
