The Thunderbird Inn in is located in a 15min walking distance to the main attractions in Savanna. Everything is a little old, but that's not the problem. The problem was that certain areas not clean, especially the bathroom and floors. Walking inside with white socks was big problem. The breakfast is a coffee/ tea bar and a donut shelf. It's ok, but not my type of breakfast. The staff was very nice and they offer free popcorn in the afternoon. If the place would have been more clean and parking would not have been $25 per night, I probably would have given 3 to 4 stars. read more

If you're visiting Savannah and need to do so on a budget, the Thunderbird Inn is a great and affordable option! This restored motel is full of color and charm, from the large neon sign out front to the colorful panels lining the exterior. It's a classic motel setup with large windows facing busy Oglethorpe Avenue. Inside the rooms are large and clean with some RC Cola and Moonpies to greet you. There's a retro, Formica bathroom vanity and small bathroom to the side with shower and toilet. Wifi is free and the shower was fast and hot, I was a happy boy. At the front office you can grab a coffee and fancy donut every morning before you start your day. Downtown Savannah is easily walkable from the Inn. The only drawback is the road noise out front along with the occasional siren from an emergency vehicle. Not a big deal for me but what can you do with a budget hotel offering? Overall I was really happy with my stay at the Thunderbird Inn but YMMV. If you're an easy-going, no-frills hotel room type person, you'll be perfectly happy with the accommodations here. read more

I've stayed at the Thunderbird Inn probably 10 or 12 times in my life and it is my absolute go-to place to stay when I go to Savannah. So I do have some things to say about some of these comments, especially the "hidden fees". Everything is perfectly clear when you go to book what fees will be. They have always charged for parking, and they have always charged for pets. You can't expect your pet to stay for free when they're going to have to additionally clean the room up from pet hair and etc. And most hotels will charge for parking. So this is nothing new. Sorry, I just don't like reviews that are rated poorly based off of the customers negligence and not the establishment's. All of that being said, this is still one of the most affordable, clean, and friendly places to stay when you visit Savannah. I've never had a bad experience, and they are extremely accommodating. One time staying there they had me in a certain room and I was hoping for something different, so they very quickly switched me to what my preference was. Kindness goes a long way, and the staff there has always been fantastic. And top it all off? There's complimentary Krispy Kreme's every morning in the check-in office as well as coffee and juices. The theming is also a big reason why it's such a great stay. They really do a great job of executing the mid-century modern design. It's been a little bit since I've stayed there, but they also used to put a complementary moon pie and Coca-Cola in your room. They may still do that, no sure. So yes, all in all, if you couldn't tell from the review, I absolutely love staying here and will continue to stay here anytime I visit. read more

I made a horrible mistake booking this place. Online it looked charming, but the reality is rather different. My room is quite clean and presentable, but outside the door is plain ugly. And, worst of all, as I returned a few minutes ago from taking my dog for her last walk of the night, some fellow staying in another room tried to sell me weed. Traveling with your pup? You must stay here. Thunderbird Inn is located within walking distance ( although a long walk) from the River district in Savannah. You can park your car & leave it here for various transportation as well. But, First let me tell you about my check- in experience at this kitschy 50's style motel. I was greeted by a super friendly front desk clerk who promptly handed me 2 packages, 1 for each dog containing a large biscuit with the name of the Inn carved into it & a red shaped heart tag. How adorable! I was told there are donuts ( yummy) and coffee, tea available 24/7 and there is also a fresh popcorn machine there in the office. The nice size pet relief station ( complete with poop bags) is around the side and fenced in. The parking lot is tight but it was great for us because it made our 1 st floor stay ( all dogs on 1st floor) easy to bring the bags & dogs without stairs. Next to the red 50's style phone were 2 cans of RC Cola & 2 Moon Pies for us humans. The room while small is very comfortable and super clean. The sink is outside the bathroom which is super small but big enough to do the basics. If you're a very large person you may find the bathroom uncomfortable. The bed was really comfortable ( as you can see in my pics) They charge a 1 x pet fee no matter how long you stay and no matter how many pets. There is also a $15 parking fee for your stay, reasonable. The only warning is if you are a light sleeper you might be disturbed by the road noise at night as the motel is close to a busy road. It did not bother us & we had a great stay at a super reasonable price. read more

We had a comfy stay at the Thunderbird. I loved how supportive without being too firm your back hurts bed and the substantial pillows. After a long day seeing the sights all over the historic district and other areas, having to come home to the luxury of a comfortable bed is such a blessing. The front office desk staff is always cordial and reminds us there are donuts, coffee and/or tea available. For some reason, the donuts tasted really good! Sweet without being saccharine, and chewy in every bite. The coffee is just good old strong coffee, a welcome break from the froufrou coffees (no offense, Starbucks. You know I love you, too). Don't fall for the charm. Stop and take photos from outside, and find someplace else to stay. I'm giving this place 2 stars. It's a motel. And it's exterior charm and authentic-throwback is what makes this place swoon-worthy. And that's it. I can't speak for the rest of the rooms, but our room needs some major updating and cleaning. Since waking and seeing our room in day light, on check-out day, I've modified my original posting. This room cost us $200- and we aren't too happy with the our overall experience. As we rushed to pack to catch a flight, I noticed some things I didn't originally notice. When we checked in, we were running behind to get ready for dinner reservations for a special occasion. When we first entered the room, we were met with an incredibly humid room. Despite messing with the thermostat during our stay, we never could figure out the humidity situation. Which was odd because outside wasn't as nearly as humid as the room. I noticed a small gap at the bottom of the door, where the door wasn't aligning well with the frame. Next day/check out day, I noticed the gap was larger than I had originally noticed, and the top of the door also had a gap where the elements and light were freely pouring in. (Shown in photos). The bathroom was okay, until I pulled back the shower curtain (ofc before checkout) and there was build up and grime on the exterior of shower. Yucky. Grime and filth by the door (shown in photos). Next day I also noticed the scent of mold in the bathroom was a lot stronger than it was the previous day (check-in day). Not sure if deodorized by staff before check in or what? Checkout day, with better natural lighting I saw dust coated on the blinds, and some sort of speckling. Same on the lampshades (shown in photos). The chairs, again, didn't see till checkout day, I saw all sorts of dots on the chairs. I'm quite positive it was mold spores, but I cannot be for certain. But I do know it is in-fact not apart of the material/patterning because the identical chair next to it did not have the same markings. Overall, this was a poor stay. Thankfully we spent most of our time away, than in- and it was only for one evening. The room needs a deep clean, a new air unit. Maintenance on the door, new chairs, new blinds (or deep cleaned). A bonus would be if they could add better sound barriers or something. Being across from the bus station, and right off the highway, the traffic, and foot traffic was very noisy. read more

Watch out for the hidden fees! We were charged an extra $50 for our dogs to stay and $25 to park! "Dog friendly means fur babies stay free. Pay to park? Ridiculous. And believe me they can't mess up the rooms which were fine for the night but the exhaust fan in the bathroom doesn't shut off along with the light switch and keeps you awake during the night. The one plus was the cute fenced in dog area. And we walked for 20 minutes to restaurants and the water front. read more

I was solo traveling Savannah and it was my first time visiting the city. I chose The Thunderbird Inn for the aesthetic and it was so cute!! I loved every second I stayed here. Every staff member I encountered were so friendly and always had a smile on their face which was awesome! It made me feel welcomed at their establishment. My favorite part was by far the donuts, which I will not be dreaming of until I come to Savannah again. Like I stated earlier , I was solo traveling and I'm a 20 year old girl and I felt safe the whole time, it's in a good area. The positive: theme nice, retro music, moon pies, RC, doughnuts, staff is really great and popcorn The negative: room 212 has a BIG dip in the bed, my husband couldn't sleep ended up at the foot of the bed miserable night for him, when we complained the staff did move us to room 216 after telling us that the housekeeper mention it to her...Our thoughts we're you rented it out anyway! moving on .... We moved our stuff to 216. The bed was so much better room smaller, but we will deal with it. Then we notice the AC didn't work properly so that was an issue then Thunderbird does not have cable, and you have to stream your own TV which we knew and agreed to. We go to watch TV and it keep popping up James F code to stream in room 234 he was trying to stream and its interfering with ours. So we called staff (Angel) who was very helpful solved that problem by moving James F ... ok then the next day Amy in room 234 tried to stream and her code keep popping in on ours. I got frustrated and said forget it!!! My point was if you knew 234 interfered with 216 and you already had to move someone the night before why book that room???? Now Amy couldn't watch any TV because we had her code. And we just went to bed and checked out next morning. When asked how was stay I explain to her what I am writing the review on she said Well sorry here is your receipt have a nice day.. really then why ask (she was the lady that moved us from 212 to 216) read more

I have absolutely NO idea why people aren't giving this place 5 stars!!?? We had a terrible experience at a legitimately horrible and unsafe place "Inn on 17" so if all of y'all that are complaining truly want to know what BAD is, then go there!! We were so relieved when we arrived at Thunderbird Inn! Leslie & Sean we're at the front desk and both greeted us with a smile and we're extremely welcoming! The staff is very nice and will go above and beyond to make sure you have a great stay! The Inn is super cute, safe, extremely clean, and when you open the door to your room you're welcomed with moon pies & RC Cola! Thunderbird is within walking distance to many shops, restaurants, and activities. The only thing is we did here traffic, sirens, and people some throughout the night, but that's no fault of the Inn. If I could give zero stars I would. I normally wouldn't choose this these accommodations however I thought it would be fun for a night for my kids, but I was sooooo wrong. Our first room smelled so strongly of bleach it made me and one of my daughters ill. I wondered why the bleach smell was so strong and looked around, and in the ac unit there was black mold - yes it was mold and it wiped off when I used a towel to check. I reported it to the office and Leslie showed me two other rooms - one smelled like a dirty bathroom and the other didn't smell so bad. I thought we could make it through one night. We went down to river street and came back a few hours later with pizza. We were eating and watching tv and I realized my daughter's socks were black. I had her get a wet washcloth and wipe the floor to see how bad the floor was and when she lifted it up, it was disgusting - I took a video to prove it in case they didn't give me a refund. I started looking around the room and the bathroom vent was gross, the corners of the room were dirty, there was mold in the ac unit in that room too, and the water was brown (this was explained as a rusty water heater which is still unacceptable). I informed Leslie I was checking out and would find another place to stay - this was 10:30pm. She was very apologetic, offered another room which I declined, and gave me a full refund. read more

For anyone writing a bad review, remember - you get what you pay for. This is a very affordable place so don't expect 5 star quality. Don't get me wrong, it isn't bad or anything but it is not an upscale place. The hotel is easy to find and get in and out of and you can walk to pretty much anywhere easily. The retro furniture and decor in the lobby and rooms further take you back in time. ROOM: Clean, spacious, and equipped with complimentary RC colas and moonpies. Comfy bed, nice toiletries, mini fridge, and a giant LCD TV. LOCATION: Not quite walking distance and not quite taxi/uber distance to downtown and historic Savannah. Though you might as well walk, since parking can be complicated. Or an Uber ride will cost you $5-10. SERVICE: Staff was all friendly. Complimentary Krispy Kreme donuts, coffee, and juice are available every morning. 4.5 Stars though due to cost. The kitsch factor is over the top with the neon sign, retro furniture, free moon pies and RC cola, and free popcorn and coffee, juice and donuts in the morning. The price is amazing for the location, anything else in the neighborhood will be double the price and more. The SCAD art museum is one block away and tons of food, drink and attractions are within 4 blocks. The beds are comfy and the place is kept clean, all the staff were amazingly helpful. As mentioned by others, if you are a light sleeper, be prepared with noise blocking devices because it is on a major thoroughfare. read more

I stayed here sept of 2020, and i could not have enjoyed my stay even more. The check in process was smooth and quick. the lobby is so nice too! free popcorn and sweet tea while you wait or hang out in the lobby. the room is decked to the 9's in americana affair. its a nice size room also. the king bed i had was very comfy. there were free RC cola & moon pies waiting for me when i checked in. the fridge is small, but works well. AC was strong. TV & wifi worked great. small table and chairs to sit at. also, there was plenty of space and area to hang my items. stand up shower. only complaint - the toilet overflowed. i didnt even bother calling maintaince because i had a tight schedule. i hope they got that fixed ...oops. there is a parking lot, but i think they charged for parking? if my memory serves me correctly, i ended up parking on the side of the building for free. i came during the week, so i lucked out, so you might need to pay for parking if youre not a cheap ass like me. in regards to stores and bars and stuff, its a decent 10 min walk into town but the walk in beautiful. there are some stores near by, in fact i think within 5 min walk or less you can find stuff. im just very pariculular about what i like to eat and drink so it was a nice 10 min walk for me. i always felt safe and at ease at this hotel. side bar, walk outside and take a pic on the side of the building - they have amazing artwork for instagram or selfies. ps they blast oldies music during the day time onthe speakers outside of the parking lot and the decks. so if you sleep late you might hear it. i personally didnt but it might bother you. read more

Though an older motel that has been refurbished it has been done very well! You can tell quality in bathroom remodels and the grout lines were even perfect; small bathroom but had the essentials- no tub but nice shower stall. King size bed was comfortable and had moon pies on it waiting for us (2 RC colas on dresser too) so you can guess the theme... retro 50's-60's! Even had music piped in on the outside of rooms. Breakfast was all kinds of donuts with good coffee, juices if you wanted it (I passed way to much sugar for my taste) but for price and location a nice place for a couple days! read more
