I'm renting an apartment here and I'm one year into my two year lease (probably will renew for longer while I'm still saving for a down payment on a house). Really pleased with my stay so far. You can definitely find less expensive apartment buildings in the area but I think the Continental is worth the extra money. Neighbors are polite and respectful and no complaints where management is concerned.
Pros:
THICK walls. The only time I heard my neighbors was when they were hammering something directly into the wall for five minutes.
Lots of building amenities. Some of them are probably overkill but the building has a business center, public bathrooms in the lobby (important for emergencies), rooftop pool, rooftop gym, theater room, and community room with kitchen.
Clean facilities. The pool, library, gym, foyer, etc. were all very well kept. My boyfriend used to live in the Meridian in Courthouse and every weekend you would see beer cans in the hallways or too much trash cluttering the trash room. Not here!
24 hour concierge. Really helpful when if you need to let in guests at any hour. Also helpful to have them keep track of packages for you - they have a great system.
Extra amenities. This is more of a luxury add-on but every Wednesday they have the AutoSpa come to the garage. You can register your car and drop off the keys at the front desk to have your car fully washed, detailed, or both without lifting a finger. The service is not cheap but its VERY good. They got rid of all the dog hair from inside my car. The building also sells stamps and movie tickets at a discount.
Dog friendly. Its true that the area itself is kind of tough on dogs - the office next to us that shares the parking lot in the back has actually turned very unfriendly towards dogs. I've had their office manager literally follow me around the block to make sure my dog wouldn't venture onto the grass when I was just walking my dog on the sidewalk. And the condo building makes you take your dog out through the back entrance. But I appreciate that the people in the building understand dogs and are okay with my dog being curious about other people in the elevator. And if you just cross Fairfax, theres lots of grass and residential areas on the other side.
Location. It is within short walking distance to lots of restaurants, bars, the metro, Harris Teeter, tennis courts, the local library, the Ballston mall, additional gyms (if that's your thing), etc. Also the building is located right off 66 and close to 50.
Great insulation. I'm high up in the building so obviously heat rises. But starting in October and ending in May, I turn off the air and open the windows and the apartment is still cozy. Saves a ton on utilities.
Cons:
Rotating staff at the concierge. I have yet to see a single staff member at the front desk make it for more than a few months so its tough to constantly have people who are still learning how the system works in the building.
Not a lot of storage. It definitely depends on your unit but for a one bedroom, my apartment only has one clothes closet, one small bathroom closet, and a small hall closet for coats. In the event that you need to store large items or boxes of clothes, you'll need to rent a storage unit elsewhere. Even getting my vacuum cleaner in the hall closet was a struggle.
Not a lot of guest parking. There are a couple spots out front but guests are only given 2 hour permits which makes it tough if you're hosting people for more than 2 hours. read more
