Corolla is a unique destination in the Outer Banks. Unlike Kitty Hawk, Kill Devil Hills, Southern Shores, etc. Corolla is home of the sprawling shopping centers rather than unique stand alone businesses. The Shack is an exception. Tucked away behind a wild horse tour company this little spot did us just right on our second to last day staying in the area. As soon as we took a seat we knew were in capable hands and I took it all in. Sprawling grounds under a beautiful tree with unique seating (brought back from Indonesia) along with the bar top itself. How do I know this? Because I was sitting next to the woman who runs the coffee shop upstairs and her cute as hell boyfriend runs the beer garden. How cool is that? 2 businesses in one, closed from October to February. Man what a life. The beer was served in plastic cups, which I did not love but I did love everything else about this adorable beer garden. We met my brother, wife and 3 boys, it was early around dinner time. My sister and husband joined us as well and we had our own little happy hour. If you find yourself in Corolla and you like beer this is the spot folks. Enjoy. read more

Read about this place while I was scouting out local joints prior to our week vacation. I was drawn to the many remarks of the friendly, comfortable atmosphere. It was a perfect mile from where we were staying, so it presented itself as a perfect spot for a morning walk and coffee grab. Well everything that was mentioned about the comfortable atmosphere was dead on. Do yourself a favor and hang out and pick Kelly's brain for local suggestions. They've been here for four years, and I hope they'll be here every year that we come back. We even made it over to the Beer Garden at night for some music and relaxation. The patio that we saw on our morning coffee run was way to inviting, and the nights that we stopped for a beer or two with other people who enjoy these kind of places was well worth it. Very cool. Very Outer Banks! If you like chain coffee shops, don't bother, but you're at the Outer Banks, and this is exactly what you were looking for. read more

This place seems to be known for the Beer Garden, but I found out that their coffee shop is A1. They had excellent service in the morning and great coffee and bagels. The atmosphere is very relaxing while sitting in the Garden. This is hands down the best coffee shop in Corolla! read more

I love this place! It's a go to must if you're visiting Corolla in the Outer Banks during the warmer months. Beware, it's a completely outdoor bar so keep you're cool if you see a spider crawling down from an overhead tree limb. The beer selection is plentiful at this place. They even have a mobile beer truck that travels around to surrounding areas. The bartenders are nice enough and really laid back (it is a beach atmosphere after all). Great beach spot with a good mix of local and hard to find craft beer. This place has a great vibe, the beer is cold, they will fill growlers to take home, and there are food places you can hit while your there. The owner seems involved in all aspects of the business. A really great spot to refuel your caffeine engine just before the 4x4 beach. All sorts of coffee drinks (they could give Starbucks a run for their money), smoothies, and bowls, plus baked goods. They offer almond, soy and coconut milk for those who might be interested. The owner was there when we visited--super friendly, laid back and happy to talk to us. They take cash only, so be prepared. The beer garden next door is adorable and we can't wait to try it out tonight, when they have live music starting at dark (around 8:30/9:00). Tonight is reggae, tomorrow bluesy/bluegrass and then Friday is a singer/songwriter who plays a lot of covers as well as some originals. Sounds like a great mix with something for everyone! The outdoor seats are rustic, and the owner told us they do not allow smoking in the main seating area of the beer garden, but do offer a spot around smokers the back. read more

Wow. So you pay a handsome fee to rent a large house for the week, you bring all the provisions to save a dollar and what is the first you do when you arrive in OBX? Recon. You have to pay attention to find this place. It is a shack set off the street, with bar stools, outside seating, corn hole, Simone the bartender, walking distance to the house in Ocean Hill. And it was incredible. Multitude of beers and an atmosphere for engaging conversation. One TV, background music, and the buzz of a good time. Beers are not cheap, you will get a 16 ounce plastic cup for your draft. Pricing is 5 to 7 dollars. Drink fast on hot days. I visited several times because it was that damn good. Maybe not an all nighter, but 3 hours did sweep by on one visit. Great place for a quick beer or two. Definitely would visit again. read more

I stopped in for some " me time" one morning and it had such a nice and refreshing genuine vibe. The coffee was excellent and the bagels were very fresh and delish ( I think I read on their website they are from lighthouse bagels) Me and my husband went to their beer garden one night and that too was great. It was like hanging out at in you friends backyard. Cute set -up. Very fun!! mix crowd all ages and everyone meshed well. Made a series of visits here this month, and I think there is a lot worth noting. First of the brewed coffee (both light and dark roasts) is hands down the best in Corolla. So if you are a coffee snob who truely knows your stuff (not just a Starbucks addict) then you won't want to miss this stop on your vacation. Second, this place has the feel of Corolla about it. A little further off the beaten path, not yet completely over run with beach commercialism. Its cool, as are the staff. Third, its a split personality kind joint. By morning and day it is as described. By night it is a beer garden, under the protection of a giant live oak! Definitely would be a five star with some indoor seating improvements, but overall we loved this place and hope to be back soon. read more

Went for the live music last Wednesday night. Great selection of beer. But, I opted for the refreshing Hard Cider. The place was beautiful, lots of lightening, unique tables and seating. It quickly filled up. Live Music began at sunset. I highly suggest going early if you'd like a good table. Loved the ambiance. Very chill. It was a relaxing experience and I thoroughly enjoyed it here. Bartenders were nice and did a great job slinging beers. If we stay in Corolla again, next year, I will definitely go back. Probably will stop by during the day for some corn-hole too! The only downfall was the overwhelming amount of bugs. They had a bug zapper and offer complimentary bug spray at the bar. Which is really cool and thoughtful! But it was still really bad! Members of my group still were getting attacked and had a ton of bug bites. Which ultimately made us leave a whole lot earlier than I would have preferred. I'd probably bring my own Citronella candle and bug spray next time... as lame as that sounds. read more

Lots of choices for craft\local beer on tap and in the bottle. Bar tenders are friendly and fun to talk to. The best part is this place is walking distance to surrounding houses. The down side is they don't have any food or snacks. The saving grace is that Corolla pizza is a parking lot a way. The Corolla Beer Garden was a cool little spot to sit and have a beverage on a sunny summer day. Unfortunately the Shack was closed for the season, so we couldn't try them out. I loved all of the different driftwood tables and chairs outside, and the location was great - right near the 4WD beach, Whalehead and the Currituck Lighthouse. Our main problem with the place was the flies. The place was swarming with them. We had to cover our drink cups with our wallets to keep the rims fly-free. I saw they had a bug zapper but it wasn't on. On a separate note, I would've liked a hard cider option, but I understand they were out of cider at the time. I do still recommend this place, because it was still a cool place to hang out and perhaps there are times when the flies are not such a problem. So check it out, maybe when the Shack is open again next season! read more

Stopped here around 10 am on our way out of Corolla. My girlfriend and I ordered berry smoothies, but were told that they "couldn't do that" with the ingredients they had. So, we ordered the banana breeze smoothie instead. They then proceeded to give us the wrong smoothie entirely and said they couldn't replace it because of their lack of ingredients. No refund and the smoothies were virtually tasteless. read more

This is my kind of date night spot. An amazing selection of beers, friendly bar tender willing to make recommendations and taste something on tap to help you make a decision. More importantly for me, I love the ambiance. Under a big tree lit with beautiful string lights are hand crafted natural wood tables and chairs and to the side corn hole and additional seating. Live music and all nestled in a quiet little area away from the big shopping centers. Hopefully we'll get a chance to try the coffee before we leave! read more

Very chill and laid back atmosphere here at the Corolla Beer Garden. Not much seating space so come early if you'd like to sit down. The bar itself has about 7 or so bar stools and there were about 6 or 7 little tables with chairs. We got their around 7 and saw families drinking with their small children around. I am not sure if this is allowed all night or if children are kicked out at a certain time? We were told there is live music on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday nights, but the music had not started before we left (around 8:30 PM). They ONLY serve beer and wine and have a nice selection. I also saw a few corn hole games that you could play. Overall a nice place to check out while vacationing in OBX. It's open until 2:00 AM. read more

My friends and I stopped by on a whim and were rewarded. Though it was actually closed when we arrived, the guy who worked there saw us turning around and offered to open up early just for us. Super friendly and accommodating! We sat outside to enjoy a beer. The selection was great, and we were impressed that they make their own custom blend of beer and lemonade for their shandy. If you're up north to see the beaches or the Currituck beach lighthouse do yourself a favor and stop in. The Shack served hands-down the best coffee and also some great advice on some things to do in OBX that we couldn't have found looking in a guide book. Inside it was relaxing -- conducive to reading or possibly getting a little laptop-time in -- and outdoors were some benches for relaxing with an ice cold coffee or beer. For me, finding small business like this that are somewhat off of the beaten path is an obsession. Go find out what the locals know already. read more

Stopped by for some coffee after going down the corova Beach area to see some wild horses. Super cute place and delicious drinks! I ended up not going the coffee route but got an iced spiced chai with half almond milk and coconut milk cause I'm high maintenance (lol, jk, they were running out of almond milk and asked if I wanted to mix the two or choose a different option). My boyfriend got an iced matcha latte and it was really good as well! His parents got an iced caramel macchiato and a smoothie- there are tons of drinks options! (There are also multiple milk options, which are always a plus.) Someone in front of us got what looked like a pitaya bowl and it looked amazing. Definitely will have to stop in again! read more

I have so far only been here for coffee but I can't complain at all. They do not take credit cards and I didn't know that until I got to the register. However, despite not having cash with me the barista made me a coffee and told me not to worry about it. That was awesome service. I can speak for The Shack Coffee Shop, but not for the Beer Garden (sorry, underage still). The Shack Coffee Shop was a wonderful experience. This is coming from a guy who doesn't drink a whole lot of coffee! They offer many different drinks in addition to the regular coffee fare, such as frappes (which are my absolute favorite), smoothies, and even mimosas. The Shack Coffee Shop also has coffee cake, muffins, and bagels to compliment your morning beverage. With a comfortable & cozy vibe inside and VERY friendly service, I would recommend this place for anyone to try while they vacation in the Corolla area. read more
