We were in So. Carolina visiting friends and they took us to Bluffton for lunch. I like to think that I can judge an eatery by its looks out side. I liked the look of the cottage at first glance. After going inside, I liked it more. After looking at the menu, I liked it even more. I ordered the Blue Crab, Corn and Bacon Pot Pie. What is not to like there? The dish exceeded my expectations. It was all I hoped it would be. I don't normally have desert at lunch but I've never said no to a slice of Southern Pecan Pie. I'm in love. The wedding will be in August and we're registered at Nieman-Marcus. My other half had Shrimp and Grits. Neither one of us has not stopped raving about the place since we left. Had lunch here today with our dog Rufus on the porch. Everything I put in my mouth there was delicious! I had the most divine crab cakes on greens, with fresh tender corn, Lima beans, tomatoes & radishes dressed with their addicting balsamic dressing. The iced tea was brewed with fresh mint & so very refreshing Nicole was our server & couldn't have been nicer. They even have a dog menu & ours enjoyed every bite of his chicken, egg & cheese dish. He usually only eats 2xs per day but man did he devour it! For dessert I had a pecan cookie which came out on a plate decorated with chocolate sauce & fresh whipped cream. My husband had their pistachio macaroons dipped in chocolate. What a delightful flavor they both had. This will now be in our rotation when in the area. read more

This place did put a smile on my face, just like how they put pimento cheese smiley face on my burger (see photo I posted). Visiting Bluffton, seeing old friends has afforded me the opportunity to get some good food. The Cottage is a good choice for both breakfast and lunch, brunch on Sundays, and on Friday and Saturday nights, some lite dinner options. Our friend took us around 10:30, just enough time to get breakfast, if we wanted, before the 11:00 am cut off. It was a tough choice. The breakfast choices were mouth watering. The specials were equally tempting. However, we settled on coffee and tea and waiting for the lunch menu. I was not disappointed. I looked long and hard at salads, sandwiches, and seafood entrees. We started with fried green tomatoes topped with shrimp and what seemed to be a tomato basil soup. I chose the pimento cheese bacon burger. I did not like the choice of bun. I found it to be too tough for burger. I had a hard time cutting it in half. Before you mock, I am a pretty strong person. Also, I asked for medium cooked patty and got medium well. Aside from that the burger was 95% out of 100% enjoyable. The warm pimento cheese and the taste of the beef were amazing. Another positive about the place is they "like to feed you", words from our waiter. All of our plates were over stuffed with sides like chips or fries and CHUNKS of fruit. I thought the prices were a little high but you get a ton of food. All in all, it was legit. If you have a chance to go here, do so, you won't be disappointed. Later. P.S. Very cozy little spot for breakfast or lunch. Had a good selection of food to choose from. Only issue was one of the people with us had a sensitivity to carrots so was not able to have a salad. She had called the day before and was told everything was made fresh so they could skip carrots. Not a huge deal just something to beware of. I usually get the Green Goddess, tried the Southern Lady today and it was also great. Love the Grand Ceasar and also the Salmon salad. All great options with generous portions. I stopped in for lunch at The Cottage, in Bluffton. Most importantly, the food was excellent. I had the power salad, which included; shrimp; salmon; oysters, and strawberries, in addition to edamame and the salad greens, etc. Terrific food! Also, a comment on the staff; each of whom were more than friendly to me. Everyone made a point to say hello and when the wait staff past my table well working for other customers, each asked if they could do anything in passing. Yes, there is tea here -- something like 100 different varieties -- but that's not what brought me here and nor did I have one. Yes, it is dog friendly which is actually kind of cool, but I did not have a dog and nor did I see one there. What I did come for is a good lunch on the way out of Hilton Head Island and I found that. For me it was the Jambalaya and a sweet tea and both were quite excellent and a bit of a surprise considering this place is listed as a "Cafes, Bakeries, Tea Rooms" on Yelp. Service was a little slow getting the check, a little confused getting the order correct, and the line to the bathroom was long enough where I did not even try. However, with the overall vibe going on, the quality of the food I had, and the choices on the menu I still give the place 4 stars. Parking was not bad either -- the street it was on seemed to be full but one street away where parking was noted on a sign there were plenty of spots available. read more

I was looking online for a charming place to have afternoon tea while visiting Hilton Head, and based on the website this place was the perfect opportunity to check out a charming little downtown and catch tea. However, it ended up being the WORST "afternoon tea" I have experienced by far. Reservations were easy even though we didn't reach out until late the evening before. The day ended up being rainy and we finished shopping faster than anticipated, so we arrived early. We were happy just to wait on the dry porch until our time, but they were anxious to get us seated inside - and to also put in our orders so the chef could prep (in hindsight I cannot fathom what needed prepping...) We got ushered to a table just inside the door - which was like a busy deli at lunch time - so I asked to move into the "tea room" once something was available. That room was small and simple but quaint, so we were back on track. The staff couldn't answer some of our questions about finger sandwich and sweets varieties for the tea, and it was disconcerting that they defaulted to "it varies day to day depending on the chef." We requested they asked the chef what today's choices were and were told turkey/ham, pimento cheese, & tomato/cream cheese sandwiches - but the chef still couldn't determine what the sweets would be (translation: you're getting whatever is leftover in the bakery case.) We had a person with a fresh fruit and nut allergy at our table, so we ordered the full tea set-ups without those items. The tea arrived. My "Coronation" was brewed too strong and tasted bitter as a result (though in my last cup I realized despite not being given a strainer they had left the loose leaf in the pot!) The other 3 pots were fine. Our tiers came out and looked like a generous but disorganized set up. The sandwiches were on crustless white bread but pressed in a panini maker to make them look fancy I guess. The pimento cheese sandwiches were full size triangle halves, the turkey/ham was your standard cold cuts, and there were no tomato/cream cheese sandwiches - much to my husband's disappointment. The top and middle tiers were a jumbled mess of baked goods and cake slices with no apparent organization. I hunted for my scone and devonshire cream - thinking it must be buried below some of the sweets - to no avail. When the waitress returned I asked if they forgot the scones and was told they substituted more sweets for thr scones because today's scone was orange and cranberry; she could bring them out but it would now be an additional fee (what?!) First, our person could have eaten the scone without a problem because it wasn't FRESH fruit. Second, it would have been great for the waitress to mention the substitution BEFORE it happened - especially if there wasn't a non fruit substitute scone - as we could have chosen to either include it or order something different. Finally, lets talk about the mess of sweets on the top and middle tiers. The table had two "with a friend" tiers for $40each to feed 4 people. Mine and my husband's contained the following: 1 slice if red velvet cake, 2 slices of soggy oreo cake, 6 squares of chocolate fudge, one half of a coconut macaroon and the following items pre-cut in halves -- chocolate chip cookies, a round of cheesecake, a round of fudge cake, and a mini chocolate bundt cake. I will admit the tiers looked abundant, but despite my love for sweets (and especially chocolate) I was grossed out by it all. Besides that there was absolutely no rhyme or reason to the offerings piled on there, so my assumption about "leftovers" seems pretty spot on. To sum it up, I spent almost $50 for my husband and I to have mediocre paninis, old desserts, and tea. The volume of stuff was egregious (we felt inclined to box up the leftovers, though no one will eat them), but this was not afternoon tea by any stretch of the imagination. One special side note: avoid the bathroom here. The bathroom isn't bad per se, but you have to travel through the smelly prep kitchen and around the staff to access it. read more

O Great FSM! I'm glad we took the suggestion to visit this place. Just north of Hilton Head (in Bluffton), and tucked in among a small "art-gallery-row," The Cottage serves up some culinary masterpieces. Our meal started with some Brie: almond crusted, strawberry-balsamic glaze. Served with what I think must be referred to as "toast points." Very tasty. The specials sounded great, but the Barbecue Pulled Pork & Cornbread Waffle caught my eye. Yes, a cornbread waffle piled high with some excellent pulled pork, and a smattering of scallions and corn. This may be among the best things I've ever eaten. It was so good, I almost wanted to lie down in it and give it a hug. And there was so much of it that I could not finish it. The Flounder was mild. Generously crusted with almonds. Also a plentiful portion. It did not last long. We sat next to the dessert counter, and that was an exercise in self-control. The desserts looked delicious, but even though I was tempted to go all Cookie-Monster in the moment, we did not try any of them. Everything is made in-house. Even the chocolate cream pie. Even the tarts. Even the muffins. Even the bread served with dinner. Service was also very fast, and very personal. We were seated immediately. Staff made excellent suggestions. We got there just as they opened for dinner. Ten minutes later, they were busy. Even during the off season. I hear that you really should have reservations during the tourist season. This place is too cute. Very homey and warm. Service was wonderful. And they serve you huge portions!! For brunch we ordered a vegetarian dish called mamasita which was delish! And one of their specials - a Benedict made with French toast, hollandaise sauce, chorizo!!!!! This dish was the bomb!! They are also known for tea as they have a really large selection. Quaint and quirky and...really busy, even on a cold day! The inside is a little tight (though, again, very quaint and quirky) in the way that you'd expect for a neighborhood breakfast / lunch (and dinner on limited days!) carved out of an old house. A significant amount of their seating is on the generous (covered) front porch and the patio, so on rainy or cold days, it can take a little longer to get a table. Probably not the best place for large groups or folks with significant mobility issues. Creative menu items along with some standards for breakfast traditionalists looking for a good crispy waffle, eggs and toast, or similar. The menu has varied influences / flavors, much of which has been given a southern twist, if not a traditional rural southern comfort food like tomato pie. The whole vibe is very informal and offbeat, sometimes they run out of menu items or a significant ingredient and you need to order something else, NBD. When I've been there with small groups, the food we've received has all been delicious and well prepared, both for breakfast and lunch, with what seemed to be pretty quality ingredients. Service was informal, quick and friendly. I've only visited on weekdays during the off season, but between counter staff, servers, and folks I saw who must have been BOH staff, there have always been a lot of people keeping customers in coffee refills and turning over tables. Nice tea selection. Unpredictable housemade dessert menu. The one day I was able to save room for dessert, nothing on offer tickled my fancy (I was really looking forward to trying their Pistachio Cream Cake). Everything in the case looked impressive, though. Learn from my mistake: ask about dessert before settling on what to order. ;-) All of that goes to say: if you're really rigid (in any sense), the Cottage is probably not your best choice. But if you aren't really on a plan and just kicking around the shops and galleries in the area, it's a great place to grab an informal meal or a cup of tea and dessert. Very nice place to just sit and have a nice quite lunch. Seating is in or outside. The food is plentiful and very good. Staff is also customer oriented. If you don't see it on the menu, they will try and work with you to make what you want. The only issue I had is that you had to walk through a portion of the kitchen area to get to the restrooms. Just ate lunch their and while the food was decent there were definitely a few things I noticed that I was quite appalled by. 1. The staff was using gaiters as mask coverings which are not CDC approved. Also the hand sanitizer they were using was a recalled brand. 2. All the plates and cutlery were plastic which is super wasteful and bad for the environment. 3. The food comes with a side salad or chips - both of which were straight store bought bagged. If you plan on using bagged chips as a side at least ask the customers if they have preference for the chips. read more

I love the cute vibe of this place, but the food we picked is terrible. We ordered the breakfast burrito, and it was like a bland and sour chicken soup that poured out of the poorly plated thing. Our server handled it great when we sent the food back, though. I got the corned beef, and I had to add lots of salt to mine as it tasted like they used sugar and vinegar to flavor the corner beef. I was more hungry than my husband and dealt with it. It was, unfortunately, my least favorite corned beef I ever had. Options are slim, and so we'll return because the vibe is cute and the service was lovely. I am just leaving a review for the chef to read. I heard someone at the next table order French toast.
